Byte vs Brick: Week Ending Oct 7

By Alec Meer on October 10th, 2011 at 10:45 am.

Again! Again! It’s our theoretically regular comparison of Steam’s top ten best-selling games over the last week with the same at UK retail. Will Rage have stormed its way to the top despite the outrage and buck-passing surrounding its technically-troubled PC launch? Or will foot-to-ball have conclusively proven that an Englishman’s national sport is more important to him than pretending to be a time-lost survivor of a planet-wide apocalypse? And will retail be a mess of Sims games while Steam is a confusing muddle of pre-orders, deeply discounted returning titles and new entries? Take my hand. Where we’re going, there be tables.

(Number in brackets denotes last week’s placement; – = new entry).

Steam (including pre-orders):

(-)1. Rage
(-)2. Portal 2
(-)3. Fable III
(1)4. Dead Island
(5)5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III
(-)6. Crysis Maximum Edition
(-)7. Portal/Portal 2 Bundle
(2)8. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
(-)9. Orcs Must Die!
(-)10. Payday: The Heist

UK retail (via Chart-Track; includes etailers but does not include pre-orders):

(-)1. Rage
(2)2. The Sims 3
(1)3. Fifa 12
(3)4. The Sims 3: Generations
(9)5. F1 2011
(4)6. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
(7)7. The Sims: Medieval
(10)8. The Sims 3: Late Night
(8)9. Football Manager 2011
(15)10. Starcraft II: Wings Of Liberty

So, well done on a double-whammy there, Rage (especially as FIFA held it off from the topspot for the all-formats and console-toy charts). id might not have taken the PC version of their rather lovely shooty-drivey-shopping opus as seriously as perhaps we’d have wanted, but topping the Steam charts hardly means insignificant monies. Hopefully this will encourage them to give Rage plenty of post-launch love – I’d really like to see some higher-res textures put out, for instance.

Meantime, look at all those re-entries in the Steam chart – Fable 3, for instance, was discounted by 66 per cent over the weekend. Bit of a so-so game, but the temporarily-lowered price was right and it’s been a late-in-the-day success on PC as a result.

Not quite sure why StarCraft II saw a retail resurgence – it doesn’t appear to be discounted. Maybe it was a sale at one specific retailer, or growing mania for the multiplayer scene perhaps?

Oh, and I really do need to check out Orcs Must Die. It’s not out for another two days on Steam, but I’ve been hearing very good things from early reviews of the XBLA version.

Orcs Must Die? I enjoyed the demo, hopefully I’ll won’t be enjoying it in a Hard-Rest way.

Dungeon Defenders is also doing very well since the pre-order started, combined with the new trailer including Portal and TF2 items in the game: http://store.steampowered.com/app/65800/

I found Orcs Must Die very repetitive and completely lacking any kind of strategy

I cannot comment on the full game yet, but the demo was entertaining enough for me to preorder it from Steam. The leaderboard is a harsh mistress, though.

    Thats a lot of sims.

    or seriously at all..

SC2 has been showing off the new unit outlines for HOS, perhaps the hype has affected some people to break down and buy the newest version. Especially as apparently you’ll need the original to the play the latter (‘cording to their website, its going to be priced as an expansion, which is cool).

Don’t suppose theres a way to look at actual grossing figures rather than just units shifted? That’d be interesting, and arguably make the steam chart make more sense (it’d also be interesting to see quite how much revenue Steam sales generate)

Well Orcs must die is funny, i bought it.

I enjoyed the PC demo- it is an incredibly easy game though, I hope it’s not telling of the whole game.

I tried out the XBLA demo to see if I would get it on there since it was released earlier, but I found it really hard to play with a controller. Especially since it looks like this game can be very headshot driven, and with the odd viewpoint of the game the Y axis is so incredibly limited in how much you normally want to tilt, that it makes a controller quite difficult to keep so level (on the other hand, it at the same time is too easy with a controller because you can just leave the Y axis alone and shift left and right to shoot while keeping headshots basically lined up).

Anyway- it’s an amusing fast paced tower defense. If you enjoyed Sanctum but want something a little less FPS based, faster paced, and less thinking this could be a good game.

Speaking of OMD!, what kind of DRM it uses? The Gamer’s Gate site says nothing else than “requires 3rd party account and client” or something to that effect, and I’m wondering, do I have to tie it to Steam or GFWL or some other horrible thing like that?

You’ll not be yearning for those high-res textures when you see the size of them. It’ll make that TOR install look like a baby.

Can we stop with the ‘foot-to-ball’ thing? I’m a Wolves supporter and it’s very rare that the ball actually makes it to another one of our players, let alone their foot…

      Llewyn says:

But it’s coming from their foot. Foot-to-ball you can manage, it’s ball-to-foot you struggle with. Although as an Arsenal fan I think the national game should be renamed “Ah-shit-my-leg-ARGH-I-think-it’s-broken”. We also seem to be too addicted to that 16-bit era classic, Kick Off.

    • Dances to Podcasts says:

To be fair, in Arsenal’s case it usually is broken.

  12. Insanity says:

The Starcraft II sales probably had something to do withe IGN Pro League tournament which went on last week and has the grand finals yesterday. It was probably the best production quality I’ve ever seen in an eSports tournament.

    • Nallen says:

The IPL was pretty pro. Men in suits and women in cocktail dresses. This can stay.

I left the stream running, fell asleep and was then woken by the screaming following the final, so I now know the winner. D’oh.

    • DigitalSignalX says:

Kiwikaki’s mothership play in the finals stole the entire show. No matter that he lost the series, it was probably one of the best SC2 games ever. People will talk about it for years.

  13. The Tupper says:

Chewbacca’s gonna be pissed off when he finds out that woman’s stolen his toupee.

Oh and pretty please: next time you post that photo can you use my hilarious caption: “I’m an obsolete model” in the alt-text? I’m a small man and things like that make me feel big.

  14. Corrupt_Tiki says:

As much as I despise the sims, they seem to have incredible staying power in the top ten(yes I do realize there are hundreds of ‘expansion packs’ etc but still!-paying bills in a videogame is just as boring and only half as stressful as real life.)

Just thought it was interesting that Deus Ex:HR is still riding the middle of the physical stores chart while having fallen completely off the Steam sales top 10.

Also, I was one of those contributors to Portal 2 being in its number 2 spot. I probably still won’t get around to playing for another six months, but psychologically, that deal was just too good.
