Heroes & Generals: Re-Announced, Trailered

By John Walker on October 10th, 2011 at 1:59 pm.

MEN IN TANKS.

Having been away on my honeymoon for nearly two weeks, and thus not paying much attention to videogames, I’m feeling out of touch. But I’m not sure that can account for my not having realised that a group of ex-IO Interactive founders left the company in 2004 to restart their old development team, Reto-Moto. The company was officially re-announced in 2008, and only now, forty-seven years later, have they offered footage of their first game. It’s called Heroes & Generals, and I’m having some trouble working out exactly when it was announced. Eurogamer are calling it as today. Wikipedia suggests (without proof) that it was September 2010. But then the game’s forum seems to have been alive as early as May 2010. Oh, and there were in-game shots in April 2010. But what’s important today is there’s now footage. Well, there has been since the 7th October, apparently. But I was on holiday.

Perhaps with that title the game’s content won’t be too big of a surprise. It’s a shooter wot has tanks and soldiers in it.

It, um, sure looks like a WWII shooter then. But it’s set in a persistent online world. We’re getting more info as I type.

I never realised being able to see your shoulder in an FPS would look so wrong.

    • Enzo says:

You should check out Arma 2 then. You can independently spin your head around and check out your clavicle, shoulders etc.

But yeah, the camera in this game has weird positioning.

    • Dozer says:

The ArmA series is great. Your body, gun and head can all be aimed independently!

    • Enzo says:

Yeah, Arma 2 + Operation Arrowhead is pretty fantastic. One of my favourite games, I can’t stop playing it.

FINALLY a first person shooter taking place in World War II.

    • inertia says:

I know, right? It’s such an obvious setting to use, as well!

    • pepper says:

Not that much in the WWII setting coming out anymore these days, especially not if you like the theme/setting. Nowadays im mostly playing Forgotten Hope 2(BF2 mod) and RO2(when it works). Add a bit of Company of Heroes and Men of War to that, and you can see that it doesnt hurt to have some extra competition.

This game reminds me of a WWII game with a ongoing online campaign, I think it was called WWIIonline.

Note that when you sign up you might receive a Alpha key for those interested. It also appears these guys are sharing each development aspect with the players. They have my interest.

Not sure if yous aid that beign sarcastic..as over the last few years all we’ve had is modern war shooters and it’s now getting boring…long live the return of WW2.

    • Boarnoah says:

      @pepper

Yeah its WW2 Online . Great game although lags when more than 10 people participate in a single battle though

Edit: the best thing its compared to is planetside

  3. Kollega says:

Can you even sell a WW2 shooter these days? Especially if it’s not Red Orchestra?

Seriously though, i don’t think many people are going to buy it unless it has some interesting hook. To paraprhase one of my favourite games, “i think WW2 craze has been over in this market for years. Everyone buys modern war shooters these days.”

    • Enzo says:

Maybe it’s a new beginning for WW2 games? Red Orchestra 2, Ruse, Heroes & Generals…

That would be horrible, I think I saw every corner of Normandy and Stalingrad by now.

  4. Kaira- says:

For a moment I thought of Hidden & Dangerous. I spent way too much time with that game, and I ragequitted more than would be healthy amount. And always came crawling back.

    • Sorth_31 says:

      As a reply to Kaira:

I would have LOVED it to be a Hidden and Dangerous style game, the name even summons some similar emotional themes. H&D was one of those few utterly despised (by anyone and everyone I knew, gamer or otherwise) games that I thought got the short end of the stick. Commandos and its ilk never quite felt the same to me, I always saw them as the inferior games. That’s just me though, and my tastes have never been what I’d call a “good barometer of gaming successes”.

  5. mickygor says:

Looks like it could be quite good.

  6. Lazaruso says:

How dare you take a holiday, John Walker!

  7. battles_atlas says:

Considering its only alpha, they’ve already done a sterling job of modelling the run-around-in-a-circle-firing-wildly infantry tactics of the period.

    • PleasingFungus says:

That and the plane strafing 10 feet above the ground kind of got to me.

    • wootles says:

Reminds me of a great game that came out about a decade ago called Battlefield 1942. I would not be unhappy to see another game take its multiplayer and put in some arcadish accents to the action. I’ve been getting quite tired of games that try to force reality.

  8. feda says:

So it’s basically RO2: Online? Could be good.

  12. Dances to Podcasts says:

(disclaimer, I’m at work so don’t have any sound, please excuse anything obvious)

I recognise that bridge: it’s the bridge at Grave*. This probably means the game will feature operation Market Garden. Do I get Tim Stone points now?

*Great name for English speaking soldiers:
    - So where are we going, captain?
    - We’re going to Grave!
    - That sounds serious, captain!

  13. Joshua says:

Someone needs to make an 1985 shooter.

  14. wasabi2k says:

so it’s battlefield 1942 – only more brown and less fun looking?

Calling a honeymoon a holiday might be a bit like calling your wedding a party.
