Rage: Surprises And Miseries

this wouldn't have happened in the Voodoo 2 days. Actually, it probably would. And you wouldn't have had much internet to help.

Question to the floor: how’s everyone doing with Rage at the moment? There seem to be mixed reports as to the efficacy of the recent patch – for some it did the trick, for others (especially on ATI cards – our own John Walker claims the game is still more or less unplayable on his 5850) it didn’t help the glitching and texture pop-in, and others still have claimed it made things even worse. Carmack claimed on Twitter yesterday that id are still monitoring forum reports, and suggested those experiencing difficulties browse said forum for help. They’re worth a check, even though it’s massively tiresome to have to do so for a game you paid good money for, as there are a raft of fixes and tweaks doing the rounds – most of which at least involve only the relatively simple act of downloading a replacement config file.

Colours Of Magic: Trine 2

when you get blue and you've lost all your dreams there's nothin' like a campfire and a can of beans

No matter how many words are rattling around in my head like angry wasps, footage of Trine 2 tends to soothe me to the extent that only synonyms for ‘pretty’ exist, along with the bare essentials to string those synonyms into sentences. It’s a bonny game, which makes something as simple as a box falling apart seem like the culmination of a particularly gentle and picturesque fairy tale. The footage below highlights the Unlimited game mode, which allows co-operative play with characters of the same class, allowing three thieves to swing through resplendent forests, or three wizards to calmly rearrange the delicate and comely features of the world.

The New World: Salem Explained

Salem is an intriguing little idea, a cutesy co-operative crafting MMO reminiscent of Wurm Online. Like many of Paradox’s GamesCom announcements, it seemed to be at a very early stage of development, so we caught up with the Creative Director Bjorn Johannessen to find out more about it.

Confirmed: Battlefield 3 Features Destruction

Not long now until the great beast of Origin stumbles into our gaming crosshairs, but if you can’t satiate your Battle-need, then there’s a useful trailer out. It’s one minute of the game’s environmental destruction features. Few dudes get shot, no-one gets kicked, but a lot of stuff ‘splodes. BELOW.

Sonic Generations Steams On To PC

There's a hedgehog in my garden, but if I catch him wearing red trainers, he's dead.
SEGA Blog trumpets the news that Sonic Generations will arrive on PC in November. SEGA explain: “Sonic Generations for PC digital includes Steamworks features such as Steam Cloud, which allows save files to be stored on Steam’s servers so you can resume your game progress from any PC. As with the other console platforms, Sonic Generations will be available to play in full stereoscopic 3D and will contain Achievements and online leaderboards. The PC version will also support resolutions up to 1080p.”

It will be out November 1st in North America and November 4th in Europe. And that’s a staggered release that can’t have anything to do with retail, because it claims that the boxed versions will out later in the month. Hmm.

My email inbox and To Do list are not going to be happy, because out goes any sense of doing any work today in favour of upgrading and recharging and next wave and circle placement and what’s this? It’s got an RPG-based levelling up your party metagame? That’s it. I’m done for.

Racy: Ex-Stig And The Crowd-Sourcing Portal

Racing! Made by you. Possibly.
The chaps from Slightly Mad Studios (Need For Speed Shift, Shift 2) got in touch to let us know about their latest project, which is ambitious and then ambitious again. They’re making a new racing game called “Community Assisted Racing Simulation” or C.A.R.S. for short, and they’re doing it with a full-on crowd-sourcing and crowd-funding portal, World Of Mass Development. Their plan is to prove that the concept of getting the wider gaming community to help out actually developing games is workable by doing it with their next racing game, and they’ll be opening it up to other projects at the same time. Yours, maybe. They’ve even got the man who was Stig on Top Gear, Ben Collins, to help out for some reason.

I spoke to Slight Mad’s Ian Bell about the project in more detail below, and he explains where they idea came from and where he hopes it is going to. You can also check out the site here.

Crafty: WoW Sneaks In Real/Fake Cash Trades

My real-life pet cost £25 and does a whole lot more than this. Bet I couldn't sell her for $10 though :(

World of Warcraft now allows you, in a roundabout sort of way, to officially swap real money for in-game gold. RUN FOR THE HILLS.

Jetpackasaurus: Orion Prelude Footage

Oh no, it's a sixer! They don't love families nearly enough! (I do my in-jokes for a very small crowd.)

There are a number of games wise enough to be including dinosaurs of late, but few have had the sense to also put in jetpacks. (Never forgetting Jetpack Brontosaurus of course.) That’s why Orion: Prelude keeps catching our eye. The team say they’re just through a big internal deadline, and to celebrate they’ve put together some footage of their latest accomplishments. Which are mostly dinosaurs and jetpacks in a very pretty world pre-alpha multiplayer. Take a look below.

Beta Path To Crusader Kings II

As of now you can sign up to be on the closed beta for Paradox’s Crusader Kings II. Do you want to do that? I can’t help you answer the question. But if you do, make your way over here, and put in all your most private details such that the publisher can clone your identity and sell you to Russia. This one’s by the people behind Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron and Victoria, and we’ve written tons about it. So go research, then perhaps sign up for the map-based combat. The full game should be out early next year.
