Mario Is Better With Ninjas: Megamash

By Andrew Smee on October 11th, 2011.

From Bomberman to Ninja: Change your career easily by attending our affordable night classes!

Here, do you remember Rom Check Fail? It was a little IP-defying mashup that allowed you to goomba-stomp Asteroids as Mario and stab Space Invaders with Link’s sword. Kieron was hugely excited about it at the time. Today I’m excited about Megamash, which takes the concept and rebrands it for the modern flash gaming masses.

Hands On Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning

By Alec Meer on October 11th, 2011.

Coo, the Diablo III people won't like this.

I’m writing this about Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning while sat on the train on the way to go play a few hours of Skyrim, which means I’m suffering more than the usual degree of mental discombobulation. Which open world is which? Which was the one with the Red Legion? Which was the one where I was battling rock trolls atop wobbly rope bridges? Which was the one where I was compared to a god? (Oh yeah, that one’s both of ‘em.) That’s the thing with vast, free-form RPGs: there’s only so much room in your head. Usually we only have one at a time to contend with, but 38 Studios’ surprisingly sandbox roleplayer is due to arrive at about the time we’ll have finished climbing Skyrim’s icy mountains and be ready for something else. If all goes to plan, we’re going to be spoilt for choice.

Little Big Adventure Revived On GOG

By John Walker on October 11th, 2011.

The French do love their cartoon pigs.

In games-that-I-never-got news, everyone else in the whole world will be delighted to learn that both Little Big Adventures have been secured by Good Old Games. The French adventure platform things have always been adored, but I remember bouncing right off them on repeated attempts to join the cheerful crowds. Perhaps I’ll give them yet another go, now they’re all set up to play on modern machines. GOG have the first game up now, for a very steep $6 (I really think it’s time GOG considered bringing in a lower price point for games this old, bearing in mind they’ve been resold on budget labels at much lower prices for years). The sequel, they say, is coming soon.

Interview: Reto-Moto On Heroes & Generals

By John Walker on October 11th, 2011.

Why spoil a lovely evening with war?

Here, before your eyes, is the world’s first interview (if you ignore a Danish one from a few years ago) with the Hitman creators’ re-formed Reto-Moto, in which they discuss their recently re-announced game, Heroes & Generals. I’ll admit that seeing the in-game alpha footage yesterday, I sighed at what looked like yet another WW2 FPS. But I’ve since learned that the game is a lot more than that. It’s a persistent, massively multiplayed game, combining traditional on-ground soldier FPS battles with strategic resource and equipment management from the tents. To find out just how that works, I spoke to Jacob Andersen, game director for Reto (and original artist on all the previous Hitman games). He talks about the game’s persistent world, how the strategic elements of the General roles work, and what lessons have been learned from their days at IO.

Sheparding: Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Detailed

By Andrew Smee on October 11th, 2011.

Garrus do u like me pls tick one: Y/N <3

Mako Races! Krogan mud wrestling! Co-op mining! Garrus threesome co-op! None of which is going to be in Mass Effect 3′s multiplayer. Give it up BioWare, Shepard on Shepard action is what we want to see, none of this “Success in multi-player will have a direct impact on the outcome of the single player campaign” tomfoolery. But yes, that’s the headline. I’ve just got DeviantArt open in another window.

Cock A Hoot: Leisure Suit Larry HD

By John Walker on October 11th, 2011.

I miss the square face.

As Andrew mentions below, HD remakes serve to make games look like your rose-tinted, 1920×1080 memories of them. Trying to play through the original MDK2 now is a tough feat, so having it remade for modern, hi-def eyes is a splendid thing. But the original Leisure Suit Larry? That looks like a pile of pixels even in my most optimistic memory. EGM are reporting that Replay Games and Larry creator Al Lowe have the rights to the games and plan to give them new life. As well as start on some new adventures.

The goldfish bowl spacesuit helmet joke was the best puzzle ever

By John Walker on October 11th, 2011.

The pointiest of all the beards.

Do you want to know what happens in the second half of the Deus Ex DLC, The Missing Link? No, nor me. Botanicula: Team Samorost & Chums’ Latest

By Alec Meer on October 10th, 2011.

World of ooh

Aw, basically. This is the first teaser for a ‘point and click exploration game’ due from Amanita Design (they of Samorost and Machinarium) in conjunction with animator and sometime collaborator Jára Plachý, and it’s really quite adorable. Also visually and sonically nuts, as is the Amanita modus operandi.

IndieCade Awards And Alternatives

By Adam Smith on October 10th, 2011.

This is an actual photo from the festival - it was so much fun, I bet

I spent the weekend in a haunted watermill, which was pleasant and all, but I would rather have been at the Indiecade festival, battling inanely with invisible weaponry and rearranging boxes with strangers. The whole thing is done with now and that means it’s time for me to take a look at the winners, some of which I’ll cast no more than a sidelong glance at because they aren’t coming to PC. Last time I spoke about IndieCade I named my pick of the entrants as Proteus. Read on to see if the judges paid attention to my words and for a PC-centric awards ceremony of our very own.
