Paradox are currently running a closed beta for Crusader Kings II, their medieval dynasty-builder, but if you’re not blue-blooded you probably didn’t get an invite. The next best thing to the beta is this not-live recording of yesterday’s live demonstration with executive producer Johann Andersson. It’s a proper play session rather than a glossily edited together showcase, which makes it more instructive, particularly as Johann fields some decent questions from the internet audience. It’s split into five parts, in the first of which nothing occurs for ten minutes and fourteen seconds. So, skip forward probably.

Well here’s a special thing – seven new Star Wars: The Old Republic screenshots that are a) mostly not rubbish, and b) not ruined by a giant and pointless BioWare logo! What better way to start the day? (Um, cuddles and pie, maybe?)

VG247 has word that Avalanche are (reportedly) working on Just Cause 3. Which is both pleasing and disappointing at the same time. Pleasing because, hey, the last Standing Not Looking At Explosions Simulator was pretty ace, and disappointing because I had sort of hoped that the awesome Avalanche team might try and do something else open-worldy, rather than revisiting the island-busting stunt-murderer.

keycards under corpses

After many long months, Valve has finally seen sense and granted one of the most atmospheric indie adventures ever a spot on the mighty Steam store. But if you missed taking a look at it earlier this year… cough… is now the time to head into its dark streets?

Game continents: noticeably smaller than the real thing. Anyway, more details are emerging about what to expect from Planetside 2: “We have enormous, enormous gameplay space,” lead dev Matt Higby told PCG. “One of our largest development efforts on this project has been hand crafting every single area of those eight-by-eight kilometre continents.” Artillery will have a range of up to a kilometre. The official site is also starting to post regular updates, with some details about the factions.
The PCG article talks about 200-man battles. I can’t wait for this to arrive.

The indie scene is full of what a corporate sort might call Price-Costing Thought-Thinks. There’s an increasing trend wherein developers are offering early versions for sale to fund development, as well as offering ‘pay what you want’ initiatives and joining collections like The Humble Indie Bundle.
Now, the indie aficionados behind Indiegames.com and the fine fellows at digital distribution service Desura have launched Indie Royale, a new site with a new type of indie bundle. Containing four games, with new ones every fortnight, the bundles have an original take on pricing and, if the first one is anything to go by, they’ve got some excellent games lined up.

Hardly gripping
By Adam Smith on October 26th, 2011.

Castles are amazing. Even their ruins are mightier than the tallest and most robust of modern buildings, and they have dungeons, which are like cellars but with skeletons instead of a toolbox that I never get around to actually using. Yes, castles are amazing, but that doesn’t mean running one in Stronghold 3 is the best job in the world. Sadly, it’s far from that. Here’s wot I think.

"When unarmed, try to avoid confrontation"

I’ll get to that multiplayer stuff soon enough (although not until I have Europeans to play with), so for now let’s have a bit of a think about Battlefield 3′s single-player campaign. (No significant spoilers.)

Hairdryer-to-face

My proud home city of Manchester still trembles from the result of the weekend’s derby, with legions of red-shirted, red-faced men weeping openly in the streets and doubting all that they previously held true. There are far more seisimic events in the world of foot-to-ball though. I’ve been attempting to overturn the order by means of Football Manager 2012 and here’s Wot I Think.

Clues about a new XIII game were recently discovered on the internet. I know! Imagine that. They have led to this Facebook page. Not a shooter this time – developers Anuman Interactive are making an “interactive story”, XIII: Lost Identity, that will help players get “close to the books”. A bit disappointing for fans of the shooter, I suppose, but maybe fans of the comics will get a kick out of it. Uh, That’s it for now. I guess the game will come out at some point, and all will be well.
