I AM PLAYING WITH MY TANK.
A few people have been asking about rebuilding PCs for Battlefield 3, so I’ve posted an incredibly basic guide below.

The Sunday Papers

By Jim Rossignol on October 23rd, 2011.

Sundays! Sundays are for wondering what the week ahead may hold, but also for looking back at the previous week’s scribblings of the internet’s mad scribes, and plucking them apart for clues. IS there anything useful in there? What have they been saying? Read on for elucidation.

  • Not really a PC-gaming link winning the Sunday Papers this week, but Ben Goldacre’s request that Susan Greenfield publish her claims about videogames destroying kids’ brains in a scientific paper is reasonable and important: “This week Baroness Susan Greenfield, professor of pharmacology at Oxford reportedly announced that computer games could cause dementia in children. This would be very concerning scientific information. But this comes from the opening of a new wing of an expensive boarding school, not an academic conference. Then a spokesperson told a gaming site that’s not what she means. Though they didn’t say what she does mean.”

Sorry I’m running late this weekend, I’ve been busy partying, of all things. This edition of the bargain bucket has been scribed haunched over a borrowed laptop in a corner of a weekend long house party (Bogdan Raczynski is on in the background). I’ve got a cider waiting for me as soon as I get this posted, so I will see you on the other side. Please lend your patronage to SavyGamer.co.uk. Read the rest of this entry »

Cardboard Children: A Quick Hello

By Robert Florence on October 22nd, 2011.

Hello youse,

This week’s column will just be a quick hello and a little update about some boardgame news. I’m busy, very busy, preparing next week’s very special Halloween edition of the column. It will feature a very special video comparing some of the zombie-themed games that are on the market, and telling you which of them is the best. But that’s next week. For now, let’s see what’s happening out there.

The MMOnitor: City Of Heroes

By Dan Griliopoulos on October 22nd, 2011.

Man, I should have worn something more practical.
The MMOnitor is a new series in which we ask the developers of various MMOs to explain what is going on with their game, and what that means within the wider context of the MMO. We’re kicking off with an interview with City of Heroes‘ Brian Clayton, Studio Director and Executive Producer. City of Heroes went free recently in the Freedom update.

World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria Trailer

By Jim Rossignol on October 22nd, 2011.

Pandamen having a chat.
I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that WoW’s pandas look quite good in motion, but, well, they do. You can see them frolicking in their Asia-themed themepark world below in the Mists of Pandaria trailer. Cute hot air balloons, too.

These Panda types will apparently be a neutral race, with players deciding between alliance and horde once they get past the starting stuff. The pandaren starting area is, also, on the back of a giant turtle. Hmm.

WoW Expand(a)s Into “Mists of Pandaria”

By Jim Rossignol on October 21st, 2011.

A Panda monk, earlier today.
(Seriously? Pandaria?) Ok: A new race, the Pandaren, a new class, the monk. All that within a new Chinese-styled continent, Pandaria. There will also be a new level cap of 90, new PVE scenarios, a new pet system, and a new talent system. That’s a lot of new! They’re also going to renew the Horde Vs Alliance war somehow, and that will take place on this new continent.

That’s it for now.

Diablo III Free To WoW “Pass” Subscribers

By Jim Rossignol on October 21st, 2011.

The big news from Blizzcon is starting to pour out of the holes in the internet, and the biggest news is that Diablo III is going to be free to annual World Of Warcraft subscribers. Signing up for the annual pass gets you Diablo III for nowt and new in-game mount for WoW, Tyrael’s Charger. And there we were thinking WoW subs were going to decline. Clever boys.

Modern Warfare 3: Steamworks, LAN, VAC, Etc

By Jim Rossignol on October 21st, 2011.

Try to look cool!
Infinity Ward have posted a heap of information regarding the PC version of Modern Warfare 3 over here. Highlights include some details on how the dedicated servers will work – “Dedicated Servers, allowing players to find and filter via an in-game server browser or set-up their own Dedicated Server for complete control, without being restricted by any 3rd party hosting requirements. If looking for a Dedicated Server to join, if you choose not to set up your own, you can filter and favorite by Ping, Map, Gametype, Hardcore Variants, Voice, Password, and many other options” (such as RCON) – and also graphics: “including enablingand disabling of new rendering features such as SSAO, you’ll also be able to modify DOF, Shadows, Anti-Aliasing, Texture Resolution and more.” It will have Steamworks integration, with VAC as the anti-cheat system, and will also support LAN play.

That is a lot of stuff!

Mods And Ends: Pick ‘N’ Mix

By Adam Smith on October 21st, 2011.

hats give off no heat - SCIENCE FACT

This week, a few mods that I’ve been monitoring but haven’t had a chance to have a proper go at yet. In some cases, that’s because they haven’t been released yet, in others it’s because the hours in every day are sadly limited, and as well as playing games and writing about them, I very occasionally sleep. I even venture outside from time to time, although admittedly not in the current political and meteorological climate. Too chilly. Too bitter. All too real. Onward to fantasy. Preferably with decent central heating.
