There’s a new live action trailer for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. However, first of all, I’ve had enough of live action trailers for games. Secondly, it’s embarrassingly rubbish. So instead, below, you can watch Oliver Sacks giving a lecture on hallucinations.

Facepalm.
report
double facepalm
report
I found it difficult to watch.
report
You know what? I laughed. I mean, we’ve been banging on about how seriously all these manshooters take themselves; isn’t this a refreshing change from the oh-so-serious only-you-can-save-the-world crap we normally get served?
Sorry. I liked it!
report
I liked it too. :(
I won’t ever buy another Call of Duty game, but I do find Jonah Hill very charming!
report
But the trailer isn’t the game. The game still takes itself seriously.
report
Got to agree, I found it kind of charming.
report
I found it somewhat amusing. It wasn’t as good as the live-action trailer for Black Ops, though…
report
I liked it. I won’t be buying it until it goes on a Steam Sale in 3 year’s time, but I liked this ad.
report
Thanks for saving us from the horror of live action trailers! Much better vid.
report
The trailer is brilliant purely because it ends with a serious man saying “Rated M for mature”.
report
Ugh. Too early, I should be banned from typing.
report
“Embarrassingly rubbish”?
I didn’t think it was too bad. Although I won’t be buying the game (fool me once shame on you (MW2), fool me twice shame on me); this advert was fun in its own completely unrelated to the game way.
Edit: I love TED talks, never (rarely?) are they uninteresting.
report
I seem to recall one about the wonders of privately funded education and how private companies do everything better that was pretty yawn. Though perhaps I’m confusing things.
report
Private education usually does do a lot better.
report
I’m tempted to go to a MW3 midnight launch event to purchase Battlefield 3.
report
Do so! Do it for us!
report
That would be raaaad, duuuude.
report
I approve!
report
No no, you should go to the launch and ask for Minecraft.
P.
report
Stick it to the man! The “man” being one multi-billion dollar corporation and the “sticking it to” being giving money to *another* multi-billion dollar corporation.
report
I found it slightly amusing, and far from rubbish.
report
I approve of RPS’s standards.
report
Likewise!
What a rubbish trailer. Hey look, we have cheesy lines, kack jokes and overpaid film stars on board both of which can only ever act that one role well enough and not much else besides.
I generally have no trouble respecting the opinion of others, but how anybody can find this trash good (never mind brilliant) is beyond my ability to comprehend shit.
report
^ Welcome to America. Why do you think Hollywood still exists? People love this kind of soulless bullshit.
report
well, the buk said it first, but bad taste will ALWAYS make more millionaires than good taste. I think he said it without the caps, though.
(that was a good tedtalk, by the way. Anyone up for some acid?)
report
Black Ops “soldier in all of us” trailer was miles better than this. They went from Black Ops’ highly inclusive video to… a bunch of white soldier guys looking slightly tough. Sigh.
report
Wow, nice video, thanks a lot!
Really interesting.
Perhaps this can explain why so many people like cod?
They probably see something else!

report
Damn that’s a good lecture on hallucinations. Tonight let’s all have hallucinations.
report
Well, the trailer was much more entertaining than this news, Sir.
report
What news? Or were you talking about the TED talk? I really hope you weren’t.
report
You must be seeing things. Maybe it’s Charles Bonnet Syndrome.
report
Well, if it’s entertaining there’s likely to be an emotional connection, therefore it’s probably not Charles Bonnet Syndrome.
report
I love thinking that CTF_Face or CS_Office share cell clusters with real world landmarks.
I’d really like to have played that paintball game at CoD:XP that they modeled after a game map. I know the digital map back to front and it would be interesting to see if I could navigate the real arena with the same speed and unconscious thought as the virtual.
report
I miss Facing Worlds. Need to reinstall one of the UTs pretty soon.
report
So the RPS hivemind seems convinced that MW3 is more rubbish thatn BF3? is that just talking about the Multiplayer or a general consensus?
report
No, we’re just saying that’s a rubbish trailer.
report
The talk did provide some background but it didn’t really engage in the subject in depth. It was really just an introductory piece to the visual cortex and wetware image processing.
report
One of the rules of TED is that you only get 18 minutes – Not enough time for in=depth wetware analysis, I fear…
report
Wow, what an overreaction. Was it really that bad?
I have no interest in MW, but I found it quite amusing.
report
Yup. Wasn’t genius, that’s for sure, but it was way better than the other usual live action trailers out there. And way better than their other marketing stuff. Well, I still won’t buy it but I do think that RPS’s reaction is a bit overkill here.
report
I have no interest in MW, but that’s a brilliant trailer. Because at this point, the only people they need to make trailers for are the folks who say, “Those games look pretty neat, but I’d get online and everyone whose played the first two would be so much better than I am that I’d never catch up.”
The fans are gonna buy it. People like me are never gonna buy it. “The Noob” is their target audience and they are shamelessly pandering to them. Well done. (Slow golf clap.)
report
I really liked that trailer. RPS YOU ARE WRONG AND NYAAAH!!
report
That is tho thongue in thcheek I cantht thype. Rather amusing and spot on pisstake.
report
Wait, was that Dwight Howard at the end?
report
I liked it, but I do agree that Sam Worthington is an emotional black hole.
report
Isn’t this just a rehash of that little short youtube movie with Andy Whitfield in? I’m assuming the same team behind it and the other gaming in real life vids made this.
This ad just highlights the elements that I really dislike about online gaming. For me, multiplayer should be about enjoying a gaming experience with a friend, not an excuse to be a boastful arsehole.
report
It’s pretty weird to listen to the beginning of that Sacks ted talk after having heard the Ode to the Brain:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JB7jSFeVz1U
report
Are you kidding me? That was hilarious. Thoroughly tongue-in-cheek self-deprecating humour.
I think someone has a case of the Mondays….
report
I don’t think you understand what ‘self-deprecating’ or ‘tongue-in-cheek’ mean.
report
After watching the MW3 live action trailer I have to say the greatest irony was “Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. Rated M for Mature” part at the very end. It was ok, well made anyway.
Seriously though, live action trailers for games are pointless, you won’t see a live action trailer for the next Pixar movie: show the product you’re advertising.
report
I think this is the first video I’ve watched on RPS for about a year. I would probably watch a lot more of them if they weren’t shitty trailers for boring games.
report
I don’t know about your live-action fatigue, but that trailer was actually kinda well-made. It certainly had a lot less cynicism than this news post. :/
I do thank you for that TED-video, though. Fascinating topic.
report
It was ‘meh’ compared to the BlOps trailer, but I didn’t find anything too offensive.
I can understand the live action fatigue, though.
report
I kept thinking it was the same guy from the Fallout Nuka Break internet serials.
report
Oliver Sacks is great.
report
+1
report
The live action trailer was embarrassing, but it was good as a piece of comedy.
report
mumblemumble felicia day mumble
report
I’m definitely passing on this iteration, but I was laughing my ass off at this trailer. The difference in players is all too true.
report
It started out ok. I was wondering what RPS was complaining about, but after twenty seconds of minor funny it did get embarrassingly rubbish, good call John.
I am l33t h4x0r, u r rubbish n00b. But I train yous and you be l33t h4x0r 2. Then we b real manly mans and we all train udder rubbish n00bs to be l33t h4x0r 2.
Also we r not fat neckbeards playing at army manshoots.
report
Hallucinations talk was impressive. I have learnt a lot today.
Trailer….where?
report
The trailer was ok – certainly more entertaining than the usual shouty-explodey Michael Bay style gameplay trailers.
But never mind that, thank you so much for posting the Oliver Sacks talk – best thing I’ve seen on the internet for ages, absolutely fascinating.
Now if only someone would make a game out of that.
report
I like to imagine the joke is that 1:30 is how long it takes before you think you’re awesome at MW multiplayer.
report
Even Activision thinks tubers are noobs.
report
And yet they do nothing to solve the problem.
report
I’m going to go out on a limb here and say I enjoyed it quite a lot and know many others did too. Big budget visuals, strong concept, some amusing touches.
The phrase”lighten up and stop automatically attaching dismissive cynicism to everything-CoD” comes to mind, and I’m not even a big CoD player.
report
Yeah BlOps LA trailer was better…reflecting who we are as modern society that play these manshoot games. This trailer…well its ok. Its not inspired and felt like its run through focus group like Microaoft ads. They have the money to burn on licensing AC/DC music, c list actors, special effects, might as well use it on something other than making the game better. The video illustrates their goal of making MW3 deep for the vets, yet noob friendly which was outlined at the XP event.
report
Jonah Hill lost weight.
report
I don’t know I really enjoyed it. Particularly when he tried to rpg someone right in front of him; saw that a lot in MW.
Of course I’m still not going to buy the game or consider it as anything other than a souless cash cow, but it was fun to watch. And that TED video was great so I get two enjoyable videos from one article. Hooray!
report
I think that your comment was simply to vent your anger torwards CoD, which I understand, since I was let down many times, specially since the Ad is very good. But I can’t get angry at you, the video you posted was incredibly interesting.
report
And THIS is why I don’t check other gaming websites any more….T.E.D lecture was awesome.
report
I don’t understand what problem you people have with the video. i found the old guys lecture very interesting and informative.
