This Isn’t Call Of Duty’s Live Action Trailer

By John Walker on November 7th, 2011.

Oh piss off.

There’s a new live action trailer for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. However, first of all, I’ve had enough of live action trailers for games. Secondly, it’s embarrassingly rubbish. So instead, below, you can watch Oliver Sacks giving a lecture on hallucinations.

Nifflas+2: 6 Shots of Whiskey / The Big Sea

By Alec Meer on November 7th, 2011.

I tried another one where I named the characters after my current and former cats. That was a really bad, heartbreaking idea

One of the many things about indie gaming that makes me feel warm and fuzzy, and like maybe the world isn’t about to end in war and poverty and climate change and giant ant invasion after all, is that even established names in the field can’t resist getting involved in gamejams. Take Knytt Stories creator Nifflas, for instance, who’s co-developed a rather impressive, Unity-powered Marble Madness-esque game in just 48 hours for the recent Exile Game Jam. True, it’s hardly busting that micro-genre wide-open, but it’s pretty, it’s tight and it’s the kind of thing someone would charge £2 for on iPhone – a deft example of rapid development talent, and yours for no-pennies. Take a look at it below, or play it in your browser here.

Oh, and there’s a second new Nifflas game, concerning the embroidered cowboys you can see above, which you should really take a look at…

Dismantled: Lego Universe Closing

By Adam Smith on November 7th, 2011.

My parents got rid of my Lego when I was a teenager - perhaps I was expected to pay a monthly fee

An increasing number of massively multiplayer games are offering free entry into their worlds but it stands to reason that, more often or not, gangs of salesman will be roaming inside, or at the very least there will be equivalent of concession stands littered about the place, stocked with pricey but powerful socks and the like. Lego Universe began offering a free trial back in June and these short months later, the announcement reaches us that the game is shutting down.

The Wager Is Complete, The Archive Revealed

By John Walker on November 7th, 2011.

It's a game about... an archive?

Remember the completely splendid Pirates-like The Wager? Well, it’s getting bigger again, and developers Surprised Man are calling it complete. Which means they’re ready to announce their next game, The Archive. You can find out more about both below.

The Sunday Papers

By Jim Rossignol on November 6th, 2011.

Sundays are for repair. The battles of the days and nights before can be forgotten with a cup of tea and some time with a friendly, glowing screen. Let’s see where that takes us.

  • “Things I Ate In Skyrim”: “I found myself at a crossroads. I could follow the stony trail toward Riverwood, the game’s first village, or I could take the road less traveled. That’s when I noticed the lovely insect floating above my head. The butterfly lit upon a large rock, then took to the air. I looked up, plucked the creature out of the air, and checked my inventory. I’d already plucked its wings from its body—presumably to be mixed into a potion. Rather than waiting to find a use for this strange reagent, I ate the wings.”

Cardboard Children: Fleet Captains

By Robert Florence on November 6th, 2011.

Hello youse.

Do you remember a couple of weeks ago I said “I played an amazing game. I can’t tell you about it right now. Heeheeeheeeeeeee!” And some of you speculated about what it might be – “Perhaps it’s a new Knizia game?” Fucking UNLIKELY. “Perhaps it’s something about trading corn in 16th Century Humbergurgenstein?” Fucking UNLIKELY, mate.

Today is when I can tell you about it.

As Captain James T.J. Kirk would say: “ENGAGE!”

Mods And Ends: The Sims 3

By Adam Smith on November 5th, 2011.

Does anyone remember Sim Town?

Oh no! It’s for girls! And not even the good type of girls. The bad ones. The ones who like Hollyoaks and reality TV, and feast on swirling and scurrilous rumours about Brangelina.

Except that’s a load of old rubbish, like claiming that games with guns only appeal to violent sociopaths or wargames only appeal to retired colonels. I have it on good authority that many current ranking members of the Armed Forces also like to play wargames. The Sims has long been a fascinating piece of software, in many ways experimental and exploratory, and supporting a type of creative play that is rare to find. Let’s mod it. Let’s really open it up.

The MMOnitor: Fallen Earth

By Dan Griliopoulos on November 5th, 2011.

This week we turn our gaze to Fallen Earth, the widely underrated post-apocalyptic MMO which was recently acquired by free-to-play network, GamersFirst. We spoke to Marie Croall, Lead Designer, about the evolution of the game, the challenges of making those changes work, and the basic challenges of running an MMO at the smaller end of things.

The Flare Path: Tomorrow’s Chip Wrappers

By Tim Stone on November 4th, 2011.

The seven aluminium and three plexiglass FP points up for grabs this week, were made from pieces of 'Emancipated Emily', a flak-ravaged B-17 that clipped Big Ben on November 4, 1943.
In pre-RPS days The Flare Path came in leaflet form and was distributed by a fleet of low-flying Whitley bombers. It was a horribly wasteful and expensive business. It could be dangerous too. Several planes were lost in accidents and on one dreadful occasion in 1939 a Cornish district nurse went over a cliff edge on her bike after being blinded by a sheet of windblown sim and wargame news. Spare a thought for the unfortunate Miss Ivy Tregowan as you sit safe and sound perusing this week’s selection of winged and warry stories. Beyond the jump: Black Shark 2 disquiet, a new simulation periodical, and a quick shufti at one of the finest free tactics titles around. Read the rest of this entry »

Man Down: COD Elite PC Delayed

By Alec Meer on November 4th, 2011.

No sir, wearing a wetsuit does not classify you as 'elite.'

Elite, the social network/video-making/DLC-flogging wrapper for Call of Duty due to launch with Contemporary Fighting Techniques 3 next week, won’t be turning up on PC at the same time as the game itself. Why? It’s because you’re so insecure. And so you should be, with that nose. Oh, sorry, I’ve got it wrong – it’s because the devs think the PC’s insecure. That’s not an insult, calm down. They’re just worried about cheaters hacking the system: the precious statistics must be protected!
