User-generated tracks and cars fighting or something: Ridge Racer Unbounded! I didn’t realise this about the new Ridge Racer game, but fortunately Namco’s press release guy was standing right here in the internet: “With the new sophisticated City Creator, fans can easily create an unlimited number of tracks and share them with their friends for limitless replay value,” he says. Thanks, Namco guy! Anything else? “Domination Race encourages players to destroy everything in sight including rival cars, the environment and other traffic on the road.” Cars destroying the environment, eh? A lesson there for us all. Mm.

Team Rainbow’s been quiet awhile. It was 2008 when Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 was released, and while Ubi hinted last month that new games would appear in running franchises, it’s not until now that iwe knew it was this one. We were expecting Spinter Cell. But it’s Rainbow Six: Patriots.
It’s coming from Ubisoft’s Montreal department, and being made alongside Ubisoft Toronto and Ubisoft Red Storm. Which I hope is their solution to multiformat, rather than a return to the fragmented design days of the last decade, that saw their titles get a little confused. Although despite three teams on the project, they’re in no rush – the game is set for 2013. And of course it’s not really being made by them, but by Tom Clancy himself. And promises “a bold new direction”.

More adventure gaming news now, following John’s tearful account of the beautiful To The Moon. Sunday sees the release of the fourth episode of Pheonix Online’s unofficial King’s Quest game, The Silver Lining. As with the others, it’s absolutely free but they are after money for something else. While working away on The Silver Lining, they’ve announced a new project, Cognition, in collaboration with Gabriel Knight designer Jane Jensen. It looks like a darker affair than King’s Quest, which admittedly isn’t a stretch, and there’s a short promotional video for that as well. Two videos in one post – it’s like a multiplex down there!

Jim told you all about the beginning of the signup period for the Tribes Ascend beta back when the news was fresh, but now that it’s stale I’m here with a friendly reminder that you only have one day left to apply/pay if you want in. One piece of potentially pertinent information is that no beta wipes will be performed between now and the game’s launch, so you can progress straight through the closed and open betas racking up unlockables. Jetpack antics await. Sign up here and leave fate to decide, or purchase the Tribes: Ascend VIP Starter Bundle for guaranteed access and a heap of in-game currency.

As the internet boils over into an Ouroboros of speculation over the GTAV trailer, the full statement from Rockstar is brief and to the point:
Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created. A bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer, Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present day Southern California.
Other important notes: 1) We will now be calling this game “Gee Tav”. 2) PCG’s explanation of the multiple protagonists theory seems solid to me.

What are you expecting from Saints Row: The Third? From the promotional material so far, it’s probably an awful lot. They’re promising the moon. I’ve had a good long play of the early stages of what’s obviously a huge game, so I’m beginning to get an idea of quite how it’s balancing it all.

Wondering whether to buy Lord of the Rings: War in the North? Depending on where you are in the world, you may have that option right now (US), on the 9th of November (EU) or in the distant future of the 25th of November (UK). All sorts of things can aid a purchasing decision, primary among them being our wise words, but few would argue against the use of a demo in addition. There is a demo for War in the North but it’s exclusive to the Onlive service, allowing a 30 minute trial starting from the beginning of the game. It should be available in the US and the UK right now.

The latest trailer for Saints Row: The Third once again impresses upon us quite how outlandish the game is aiming to be. A game I’ve been playing all this week, and will bring you some thoughts on in an hour. But in the meantime, take a look at the barrage of nonsense that’s being crammed in there. Including, oddly, one scene that breaks the rules for what Volition don’t want revealed about the game ahead of launch. Go figure.

Over the past few days I have, along with tens (perhaps hundreds) of thousands of other people, been blasting my way through the initial hours of Battlefield 3‘s post-launch multiplayer. The game has certainly benefited from the time spent in beta, but it still has some way to go before it reaches the kind of polish and balance we’re going to enjoy in the coming years. Nevertheless it’s been predictably thrilling, and getting to grips with this new Battlefield has been one of the highlights of my year so far. That said, it’s also provoked some other, bleaker thoughts…

Kan Gao’s To The Moon first came to our attention thanks to Laura “Plants Vs. Zombies theme” Shigihara. (I do hope for her sake she can lose the moniker soon.) Her involvement with the game’s music got us to take a look at early footage, and then it became something I desperately wanted to play. I was right to. No surprises here – this is an incredible game, and I’m going to tell you Wot I Think it is that makes it so.

New shots of Max Payne 3 are always a welcome sight. Not due until March next year, we’re obviously still a way off from actually seeing anything useful, so clearly dripping out the odd picture here an there is the usual tedious PR game we all have to put up with for some reason. Still, by February we’ll be sick of the sight of it, so let’s make the most of still feeling that frisson of early excitement? I don’t know. I’m confused about what to be cross about. I’ll just be cross about everything.
