I’m running a little late today, sorry about that. My brain is still gradually untwisting itself after the mammoth task of chronicalling all the many discounted video games there are, over at SavyGamer.co.uk, during the week. Things are starting to get busy, as everyone across the industry is discounting to help bump up those end of year financials. The bargain bucket has you covered for all the best value PC downloads on this fine weekend, so delve in to see what’s on offer: Read the rest of this entry »

Not Cardboard Children: But Something Else
By Jim Rossignol on November 26th, 2011.

Rab has to look after his nipper today, so no Cardboard Children until next week. In its place, why not watch the latest Shut Up & Sit Down video, which I’ve posted below? Eh?

Introversion Drop “Treasure Hunt” Clue
By Jim Rossignol on November 25th, 2011.

Hmm! Introversion are up to something. They’ve sent us a mysterious image, which you can see below. They tell us it is part of some kind of treasure hunt thing. PCG have the first image. The email from Introversion reads: “The clues are all from Introversion’s next game Prison Architect, and showcase Ryan Sumo’s amazing art. Some of the clues are buried in the Humble Introversion Bundle.”

Mods And Ends: Skyrim
By Adam Smith on November 25th, 2011.

I’m not a wizened grumblepuss who only enjoys the oldest of RPGs, honest I’m not! I’ve even finally managed to play some Skyrim this week and that’s probably the newest RPG in the world. Unlike most people, I haven’t actually done very much yet; instead I’ve been tinkering around to see how far I can push it before my computer starts weeping tears of molten graphics card. Mostly visual tweaks but there’s some lovely stuff here. To round things off, my favourite new Mount and Blade mod, which I mentioned before its release and now urge you all to download. Urge, you hear?
Everything Ever: Terraria 1.1
By Alec Meer on November 25th, 2011.

Wow, that is a busy-looking little videogame all of a sudden. Terraria receives its version 1.1 update on December 1st, and it’s one whose contents the devs have been careful not to spill all of until very recently. There will be 222 new items, 39 monsters, female characters, new ores and resultant armours, all sorts of new combinations, wiring and resultant mechanisms, a new lighting system and, naturally, a boss called Wall of Flesh.
The devs reckons this update will completely change the game; I can’t speak for that, but I can say v.1.1 looks off the hook bonkers, as you’ll see below. The new lighting really pumps up the colour, too.

The Lights Fantastic: Trine 2 Preview
By Alec Meer on November 25th, 2011.

FrozenByte’s ethereally-lit follow-up to their Lost Vikings-esque puzzle-platformer has been sitting temptingly on my hard drive for several weeks now, but my Skyrim habit has kept me from until today. I was still feeling a little raw after the freneticism of Serious Sam 3 and an unfortunate chilli-burn incident that temporarily cost me the use of my hands, but Trine 2‘s main menu alone is a balm for the soul if ever there was one. I’ve put a little time into the beta version – not enough for some sort of cast-iron verdict, but enough to go ‘d’awwwwwwwwwww’ and offer a few early observations.

Numbers Game: Pre-Build Your WoW Panda
By Andrew Smee on November 25th, 2011.

The forthcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion for World of Warcraft will be bringing along a revamped talent tree as well as fluffykins up there. Not happy with how players built identically specced characters at their most statistically efficient, Blizzard are hoping their new system will make it more tempting for players to forge their own path through the levels.
Three specilisations will be available for every class with specific spells assigned to each one. Meanwhile, talents are available for every spec in that class, and will be awarded every 15 levels. These talents will be interchangeable as you play, further tempting players to rebuild and experiment with the numbers. Sounds a lot like Diablo 3, come to think of it.
The Insurance Will Cover It: KarBOOM
By Andrew Smee on November 25th, 2011.

KarBOOM is a bitesize freeware treat about some lovely little cars indulging in a spot of sumo wrestling on a high plateau above a bottomless drop. It supports internet and local multiplayer, the latter a ridiculous attempt in trying to fit four desperate hands on one keyboard, each sweating to control the adorable wind up bumper cars as they fight their way through a bevvy of game mutators that work much in the same way as Unreal Tournament handles things.
Occult Dealings: Cabals – The Card Game
By Adam Smith on November 25th, 2011.

It’s been a long time since I played a collectible card game of any sort. I’ve always meant to play Mythos or the Cthulhu CCG because I enjoy being driven mad by unimaginable and blasphemous horrors, but I’ve never quite found the time. I have spent a little while playing Cabals though, which is free and has an occult theme. You can spend actual money to improve your deck but it’s also possible to earn better cards by playing. Fantastically earnest trailer below.
Unquiet Spirits: Ghost Recon Online Preview
By Alec Meer on November 25th, 2011.

Oh dear. The context in which I find myself writing about Ghost Recon Online is very different to the context in which I played it. It was all sunshine and daisies and shotgun shells then, but now it’s blood and mud and he said she said and everyone knows best and everyone else knows nothing. What I’m not going to do, though, is discuss the controversial comments made about completely different Ghost Recon game and one man’s troubling take on the state of PC gaming, so I’d be grateful if you could keep arguments about Future Soldier to the thread about Future Soldier. I’m talking about Ghost Recon Online, a game specifically made for PC and PC only (at least for now – apparently there’s a WeeeeOooooo version due after Nintendo’s bizarre console/tablet thing launches), and one mercifully sidesteps piracy and DRM arguments due to being an inherently online game with persistent player ranks and whatnot.
Here’s the thing about GRO: it’s a free to play, mulitplayer-only shooter. And it’s pretty good. That doesn’t have to be an oxymoron after all.

The Flare Path: Campaigns Pain Me
By Tim Stone on November 25th, 2011.

The Flare Path’s primary recon tool, a Staghound armoured car named ‘Galloping Gertie’, has been off the road most of this week after a high-speed collision with a Charolais bull. As a result I’ve found myself with lots of spare time on my hands. The majority of that time has been frittered away on idle pursuits like scrumping pears and playing Poohstickgrenades, but I’ve also whiled away a few hours in constructive contemplation. The subject of my musing? Mostly, wargame and simulation campaigns, specifically “Why are so many of the bally things so dashed disappointing?”. Read the rest of this entry »
