Hold Onto Your Hats, Bats: Winter Walk

By Adam Smith on December 20th, 2011 at 12:51 pm.

It sure did

Phew. I was just about to scribble some rot about the release of free challenge maps for Arkham City, which are only downloadable through Games For Windows Live. As I was staring at the error message that greeted my attempt to install them, a tweet landed ‘pon my shoulder and whispered in my ear: “Why all this effort to clobber villains at the Jokers Carnival, and in the Iceberg VIP Lounge and Batcave? Even if you were doing it using the free Batman Incorporated skin it’d just be fisticuffs. Better to take a top-hatted stroll in the snow.”

By jove, what a grand idea that was. You can watch a slightly interactive documentary of my turn around the environs thanks to Winter Walk, which is as pleasant a way to while away a few minutes as you’ll find today. Thanks to Dan Marshall (@danthat).

Why exactly do I have to download free stuff using GFWL? Why can’t they just set up a ftp server, put them out on steam etc, even torrent. Just run setup_batman_dlc.exe and the right files are updated and new maps put into right folders. Arkham asylum apparently also had free dlc that I never managed to get.

Hm. I don’t think the software developers are guilty this time.

Edit: 165 steps then my hat flew off and the good man reminded me of my own copy deadline.

…. I want the Arkham City challenge maps. I love festive fisticuffs. But I am deadly afraid that everytime I touch GFWL in anything it may think of inappropriate, other things break and corrupt like my innocent little mind. :(

    194 steps :p

I am really getting a Prof Layton and Luke vibe from those characters. Also, I can only get about 50 steps because I am bad at games.

Very nice little thing. And I just realised I was entertained by that more than by some far more interactive games. Like, say, City of Heroes.

Way off topic but the RPS forum is being blocked by my avast :-/ Anyone else having trouble?

    • Snargelfargen says:

It appears that forum is compromised. My ESET antivirus blocked a foreign ip when I opened the forums. I would stay away just to be safe.

Watch for the hat to vibrate. A little concentration and you will run run run.

I followed up my 107 step with a meagre 54 and upset a strret urchin. I’m now left wracked with horrible feelings of guilt. Thanks very much RPS.

    Barely a game… I think I’ve had more interactivity with most cut-scenes.

    God bless you, hat-retrieving urchins.

Dear sir, I say, have you considered the method of walking, and holding your hat, at the same time!?

    • Skabooga says:

Blasphemy! No gentlemen would ever consider such a crass stance.

  15. Skusey says:

That is lovely. Although if the wind were frightful enough to blow one backwards, I’d rather stay indoors, with the fire, and the servants.

  16. Burning Man says:

Microsoft allows free stuff? I thought that went against all their spidey business senses!

  17. Aja says:

This is my new favourite thing.

Also, you can get it on cell phones, which are the perfect place for it!

    • TheBigBookOfTerror says:

For free too, that pleased me immensely. It’s better quality than a lot of the games you have to pay for.

  18. HeavyStorm says:

Is there an ending to this thing? Already at 220 steps…

427 steps. I’m sure there’s some ridiculous fellow out there with 2000+.

I was rather disappointed when the dialogue started looping. I was hoping the gentleman would eventually find himself home again, but now.
