Unlock Your Inner Brony In Skyrim

By Craig Pearson on January 19th, 2012 at 5:05 pm.

I'll get my coat. And several other changes of clothes.
Every game has at least one mod that will push their fans to the brink of uninstallling and having a shower. This is Skyrim’s, I fear. We should have known it was out there, we should have protected ourselves. But it’s too late. I’m sorry.

Welp, time to remove RPS from my bookmarks.

I was about to rage, claiming nothing was sacred anymore. The Victoria 2 pony mod was already too much for me.

But then I realized I would be slaying them.

    • Gasmask Hero says:

What? There’s a pony mod for Vicky 2? Well. I have difficulty believing that there’s any sort of crossover point whatsoever between the demographics for My Little Pony fans and those of 19th C based socio-economic simulators, but if such a thing does exist then I may as well have a look. For rubbernecking purposes only, you understand.

    • Bhazor says:

After the latest episode mentioned recessive traits theres been a surprising surge in brony geneticists. I’ve seen at least three essays on how earth ponies can give birth to pegasus ponies.

The biggest cross over though is TF2.

The whole “we’re being ironic about this…..but not really” subculture is the worst

    • lorddon says:

Perhaps next to your sense of humor?

    • bit_crusherrr says:

Sense of humour? Really? This whole Bronies thing is ridiculous. The sooner its gone the better.

    • Dominic White says:

I’m sorry, but if you don’t think the idea of a surly viking jumping atop the head of a giant magical pony and driving his enchanted blade into it’s skull, absorbing it’s soul, and ferociously bellowing ‘Yay ^_^’ to the heavens is funny, then I don’t think I want to know you.

    • Lars says:

It seems like some people got some sand in their girly parts? Watch some ‘My Little Pony’ to girl up a tad!

    • stahlwerk says:

@OP: Are you really certain about that?

    • sinister agent says:

Who says it’s ironic? I’ve never even watched the programme, but I watch all kinds of things that aren’t aimed at me. There’s no need to put some twattish ‘irony’ shades on. It’s possible to sincerely enjoy something silly without having to be a wanker about it.

It’s at least more imaginative than the usual experience with moddable games, which is “oh, I wonder if there are any mods for this… let’s see. Oh yes, lots! Oh. Star wars mod, lord of the rings mod, star trek mod, battlestar galactica mod… sigh. Never mind, then.”

    • Walter Heisenberg says:

      @stahlwerk
After seeing how this stuff played out on the Something Awful forums I’m certain they aren’t being ironic about it.

    • Walter Heisenberg says:

      @sinister agent
A huge chuck of the fanbase act like they are being hip and internet ironic about liking about it and feel the need to proclaim their love of the show into everything.

    • Kaira- says:

I never really undestood why MLP is such a big thing. Adventure Time is so much better.

    • stahlwerk says:

@W.H. What I meant was, are you certain that this can’t that be said about every thing having “a following” nowadays? There are always those who on principle act like they’re too cool to actually enjoy anything. Why should I care about the insecurities of others? I’ll measure my enjoyment in my own laughs.

    • sinister agent says:

      @Walter Heisenberg

Ahh, I see. I’ll take your word for that; it certainly sounds plausible. But I see no major difference between that and the obnoxious fans of anything else.

    • LazyLemming says:

      @Dominic White

You god damn bastard. Now I have that image stuck in my head and all my coworkers think my random unexpected chuckles make me insane.

    • Rankith says:

      Walter,

Every fandom has annoying/pushy fans, this one is no different. There are also plenty of people that actually just 100% enjoy the show, they aren’t being ironic or anything.

    • ecat says:

This shit is actually a work of genius.

No, not the show – which is okay but I’ve only watched up to episode eight of the first season. The genius comes from Hasbro’s attitude.

You may have noticed a whole lot of fuss and bother recently over SOPA and PIPA which are, superficially at least, about IP and copyright protection and the penalties which are to be endured by any who so much as hint at using the merest smidgen of Big Media content without prior authorisation (and payment). Contrast this with the attitude of Hasbro who basically said “Here are our characters. Here are our stories. Now go and do anything you fucking well want.”

The result of this open and free attitude is quite astounding. Viewing figures for the show must be up by a factor of 100. Awareness of the product must now be off the scale. Genius. And a perfect example of how embracing the internet ethos can be much more productive and cost effective than trying to fight against it.

Anyway, back to my Skyrim Fluttershy mod. Any suggestions as to the size of the strap-on?

    • crizzyeyes says:

I never understood, as a brony myself, people who get offended when there’s random MLP crossovers of completely unrelated media. I usually find it amusing, because there’s some parallel drawn from character X to pony character Y from the show that I didn’t notice before, and is thus funny to me. Or it’s just absurdism.

But this isn’t 4chan. It’s not like it is somehow being shoved down your throat just by existing on the internet, like a disgusting shock image being bumped to the top of /b/ just because somebody posted in the thread. Stuff like this is meant as a sort of in-joke for those in the community. I don’t know any brony who is obnoxious enough to spew in-jokes that nobody aside from them and their friends would get. If you meet these people, fine. They’re assholes and they would have been assholes even if they’d never even heard of MLP; they would be obnoxious through some other medium. Also, they’re probably in high-school; surprisingly, most bronies are actually high school students, not college students. And yeah, teenagers tend to be obnoxious.

If you should be blaming anyone for you having beared witness to this spectacle which offends you so, it’s RPS for posting this article, which admittedly has no real purpose aside from the fact that obviously Pearson here found it humorous. It’s a mediocre model with atrocious scaling (the rider would never be able to see past their giant heads) and unchanged animation, which makes it terrible animation. The modder didn’t even make a new model for Fluttershy; it’s just his Rainbow Dash model reskinned (which is probably a reference to the fact that certain figurines Hasbro put out alongside the show had this same hilarious flaw). If you can’t at least laugh at the flaws of this silly mod, if you can’t do anything but stew in your horrible, lethal hate for an entire group of people you’ll never associate with, then my best suggestion would be to go listen to some of your favorite music until you cool off. It’s what I normally do.

EDIT: Oh, sorry. This isn’t -quite- the mod I thought it was; I thought this was the one that uses these exact same models, but it replaces the horses for you to ride them. Hopefully that makes it clearer.

    • Bhazor says:

      @ Kaira

My Little Pony is a beautifully made cartoon with well rounded characters whose triumphs and shortcomings drive the vast majority of the plots as well the humour.

Adventure is a frankly hideous Spongebob rip-off relying almost entirely on “lol random!!!” humour.

    • Woden says:

@ Walter Heisenberg: I have not yet met or encountered an ironic brony. I’m well aware that irony has been the only accepted form of expression for a couple decades now, but bronies are one of the leading edges of a new wave of sincerity.

I know this is going to be kind of a radical concept for you, but have you considered the possibility that those people who “feel the need to proclaim their love of the show into everything” just really like the show?

    • thegooseking says:

The process with me was something like:-

Internet: This show is really good! No, really! We’re not joking!
Me: Ha! Yeah, right! I’ll believe that when I see it!
      /me watches show
Me: Hey, I suppose this is really good after all. Who knew?
Internet: Um… we did? We… told you?
      Me: Shut up.

Irony never entered the equation, nor did the idea of being ‘hip’ or whatever. I rarely ever even talk about the show. I just like it. And although I don’t make a big deal of sharing my love for the show (beyond, obviously, my choice of avatar), I appreciate when other people do. Well, apart from the more… extreme fanfic.

But you know, people having a problem with other people actually liking stuff is hardly limited to My Little Pony on this site, so I shouldn’t be surprised.

    • Fox89 says:

@thegooseking: We’ve all been through the five stages of grief bronyhood. ;)

    • Dozer says:

@Fox89: do they go like this:

      1) Denial
      2) Denial
      3) Denial
      4) Denial
      5) Stop thinking about MLP

      ?

    • Fox89 says:

@Dozer: Something like that. There are one or two subtle differences. Well… four subtle differences to be precise. #1 was spot on though :D

    • Grover says:

I’m afraid the cancer has metastasized. It used to be contained to 4chan’s /co/ and /b/ (and yes, it was ironic at one point) but now it’s infecting everything. MLP fans are worse than Sonic fans at this point, making porn of crossover gender-swapped underage author-insert characters and wishing they could die in real life and go to Ponytown. Yes, every fan hood has cancer but with MLP it’s more like the cancer has a couple normal fans tacked on (spouting pony tripe everywhere, no matter how unrelated). They’re very similar to furries/weeaboos in that when they simply can’t keep it to themselves. Be more like fans of things like Batman the Animated Series, they don’t avatar up and spew memes from it in every thread.

    • Zelius says:

While we’re on the subject of liking/disliking this show; can anyone explain to me what the draw is? I mean, I’ve seen grown men who actually like this show, which seems directed at little kids of the female variant. Something I can’t imagine. What gives? I’m genuinely curious.

    • The Magic says:

@Zelius, Watch the show. My personal favourite episode is Party of One.

People like it for the reasons one would like any show. it looks good, the characters are fun and interesting, the music’s good, the ‘lore’ is relatively interesting, it’s relatively clever, it treats girls like human beings rather than giggly sugar doll things. you might like it, you might not, i suggest just watching it and forming your own opinion (that said, the first two episodes are not good indicators of the rest of the show, but it is introductory at least.)

    • lurkalisk says:

      @Bhazor

Let me just flip that for you…

Adventure Time is a beautifully made cartoon with well rounded characters whose triumphs and shortcomings drive the vast majority of the plots as well the seemingly random humour.
MLP is a frankly hideous… Uh, Space Battleship Yamato… rip-off relying almost entirely on “YAY!!!” humour.

Both out statements hold about the same amount of truth (which is to say, none).

    • MajorManiac says:

…And why are people attacking irony? Its one of the great foundations of British culture.

    • Kaira- says:

      @Bhazor

Adventure is a frankly hideous Spongebob rip-off relying almost entirely on “lol random!!!” humour.

You will die in your sleep for this. That is all.

    • apocraphyn says:

@Bhazor: I have never watched any of the new fangled MLP series. But to disrespect Adventure Time to such an extent… I do believe I have lost any and all respect for you – and simultaneously, that of the Broletariat movement. Good day, sir.

…on that note, is there an Adventure Time mod for Skyrim?

    • Bhazor says:

Maybe I am being harsh about Adventure Time. I’ve seen three episodes and I just don’t like it. I also can’t stand Spongebob or Family Guy for using the same “sealion joke” style. As a result I don’t know enough about the show to dismiss it like that. The difference is, now it’s a subtle one so pay attention, I’m not calling people who do like Adventure Time a peadophile or gay. So instead of attacking a show I don’t particulary know I’ll defend what I said about MLP.

The best reference guide for judging character quality I’ve heard is what I think of as the Plinkett method. “Describe a character without reference to job, physical appearence or plot. Imagine you were describing them as if you knew them in real life”. To this I’ll add “Plots in which these character traits or ambitions act as a driving force to a story rather than the character simply being a reactive force”

Han Solo: Brash, sarcastic, occasionally cruel and an allround asshole who is just about charming enough to get away with it. Despite claiming to be removed from morality he is still willing to do the right thing at great risk.
Plots driven by this character: Bounty hunter side story, arguably the whole second half of Empire Strikes Back

McNulty: Driven not by justice but the sheer hunt he is ultimately a wreck who relies entirely on his job to give his world meaning. Unable to bond with women he still strives to face grown up responsibilities. Often surprisingly petty he is willing to work hard just to prove his point.
Plots driven by this character: The whole season 2 of The Wire

Rainbow Dash: All around athlete who prides herself on her accomplishments and spends most of her free time working on them or boasting about them. Still prone to self doubt despite her achievements and will take and hold a grudge when beaten. Still has a passionate adoration for her childhood heroes which is remains her main drive. Occasionally outright rude to her friends she is still willing to swallow her pride to protect her friendships.
Plots driven by this character: Fall Weather Friends (in which a rivalry with a fellow athelete spirals out of control), Sonic Rainboom (in which she finds herself having to live up to her own hype after entering a competition)

Rarity: Mature for her age, she often acts more as a big sister to her friends despite being the same age. Values perfection and strives to beautify everything she sees. Though shallow she is willing to work hard to please her friends. Values status and strives to rise through the social ranks but is unwilling to leave behind those she cares about. Would gladly abandon high society to be with her real friends.
Plots driven by this character: Sweet and Elite (in which Rarity has to choose between her friends or high society), Suited for Success (in which Rarity wants her friends to have the greatest dresses for their upcoming grand party, but when they are unhappy with those dresses her inner perfectionist drives her to make the exact dress they want even when the resultant dresses are abhorent to her and will see her ridiculed by high fashion society), Sonic Rainboom (in which finding herself adored for her new look causes her to egnore her friends distress and worsens her stage fright, ultimately learns not to be a dick)

      Fluttershy: A whore

In terms of artwork the show is filled to the brim with bright pastel colours but great art direction means that it never feels garish In fact characters complement each other well with backgrounds both fitting with the style but never overwhelming the characters. The backgrounds themselves are often gorgeous hitting the sweet spot between recogniseably realistic and abstract. Despite being made in flash the animation is butter smooth and despite the main cast sharing the exact same body type every character is recognisable from the way they move and their often surprisingly subtle mannerisms. With very few exceptions it does not need to rely on super deformed animation to convey emotion instead using often subtle facial animation, musical cues and sterling voice work to convey a wide range of emotions. It was actually the character animation that got me into the show when I saw it in My Little Wu Tang. Wide emotional range without compromising the style of the show or having to super distort the characters and never being any less than super cute? Sounds like good animation to me.

All that’s missing is a fire-to-rainbows mod. Also an international team of assassins to bludgeon to death anyone who adds music to a youtube video.

    • Blackcompany says:

If the Dark Brotherhood existed…I would perform the ritual every time – EVERY SINGLE TIME – I encountered a “gameplay” video with added music. Every. Time. I would even make sure the assassins carried letters from Astrid and ear plugs. The former so that, just in case the video maker won, he would know we are coming again. And the latter so the assassin is protected from the same screaming metal people seem to love adding to their videos.
      .
      Every single time, I say.

    • ffordesoon says:

That, I think, is something upon which we can all agree.

    • Jae Armstrong says:

But if we persecuted people who add music to youtube videos I never would have discovered this corker of a song, or the album it’s on. :(

    • Bhazor says:

      @ Jae Armstrong
Christ, the hipster 60s revival is still going on? Thought that died years ago.

I swear at this point theres more revivalist music than there was actually music in the 60′s.

  12. MellowKrogoth says:

“The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.

We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.

The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.”

    ;)

  13. Ba5 says:

    Seriously, what.

It’s a fucking cartoon aimed at little girls. No, I will not try to see your idiotic point of view by watching it. It’s a fucking cartoon aimed at little girls.

    • stahlwerk says:

…Says the guy with a batman gravatar.

    • Text_Fish says:

It probably wouldn’t be as amusing if it weren’t a cartoon aimed at little girls.

Are we offending your delicate sensibilities perhaps mister batman.

      Anyway yay for that mod!

    • Donkeyfumbler says:

The camp Adam West version of Batman no less.

    • mlaskus says:

It is funny and it has some brilliant voice acting, the animations are cool too. It doesn’t matter who was the intended audience for it, it is still a fun show. My university is full of people watching it, including the lecturers.

Some days I wonder how people can get angry about the most harmless of things…

    • MrMud says:

Many good animated shows/movies are aimed at children.
MLP:FIM happens to be a really well made series made for little girls, a series that is well made in a way that it is also accessible to other age groups.

      Also, – Yay!

    • Icarus says:

I should probably point out that yes, it is a show aimed at kids, but the makers are fully aware that those kids are going to have parents, and some of those parents are going to be in their 20s and be more appreciative of Blazing Saddles and Dr McNinja references.

    • ffordesoon says:

Yes, how dare some people like a show that is not an acceptable one for those of their sex and/or age group to enjoy! Didn’t we men all agree to the terms outlined in the contract that we definitely all signed before we were born that we would only like Man Things and not Girl Things!? I say, it sure is sickening, the way these people who I do not ever have to talk to or acknowledge in any way enjoy something that I do not enjoy! God forbid they learn lessons about friendship and/or tolerance! I certainly don’t need any lessons in friendship and/or tolerance! I’m completely perfect and in no way unpleasant to be around at any time! Let us real men now perform squat thrusts and bench presses in order to attract women, as we all agreed to do in that contract we all definitely signed!

    • psyk says:

“…Says the guy with a batman gravatar. ”

Batman was made and markerted for little girls?

      @ffordesoon

Why the FUCK are children learning how to live life from a tv show in the first place? even more intresting is why young adults are still learning stuff from a childrens tv show.

    • Skabooga says:

@Icarus: I’ve never had a problem with the show’s existence (and appreciate some the previous work the creators have done), but if it is making Dr. McNinja and Blazing Saddles references, I might need to start looking into MLP.

    • Chris D says:

      @Psyk

“Why the [crikey] are children learning how to live life from a tv show in the first place?”

I see you’ve chosen to take issue with about 95% of fiction ever created. Some would consider that a bold line of argument.

    • Dhatz says:

wuhat? seriously theres no worse sort of show than the old crap batman, how can you even begin to think you got a perspective. Either life or I will teach you to start judging after you try, the difference is time wasted living not knowing that.

I smiled (a little; my face might break you know!) at the FUS-RO-yay mod.
      This is just too much.

-I wasn’t so much talking about the mod, though, as about RPS (and every other site I frequent, it seems) presenting it as the mod everyone should know.

Not that I give a shit about the raging Gildas of the net, mind. I guess I just don’t like seeing Ponies become that go-to thing when you need to stir up some shit.

  19. DogKiller says:

Is it just me or is the sight of those more scary than the dragons they replaced?

  20. :ghiacciato says:

    Seriously, what’s with the pony-unfriendly attitude? :(

  21. Meneth says:

Some of the comments in this thread so far are rather sad.

So what if someone watches a show not targeted at their demographic?
A lot of adults seem to like Spongebob for example, but no one seems to be hating on that.

  22. Diogo Ribeiro says:

Can this be used with the pre 1.4 version? I want to see infinite My Little Ponies flying backwards.

  23. Lord Custard Smingleigh says:

Well, that’s Seal 5, and there are only 7 more Seals to be broken until the End of Days.

  24. zeroskill says:

    No.

  25. Buttless Boy says:

There’s a really interesting article on Forbes about this mod.

    No, really, there is.

EDIT: Just noticed the writer quotes our very own John Walker. Serendipity!

  26. Xaromir says:

When did it become cool for grown men to follow a cartoon series for LITTLE GIRLS in a cult like way? I really don’t get it.

    • LTK says:

When cartoons for little girls started becoming enjoyable to watch. It just happened only once so far.

    • Mad Hamish says:

It’s nothing to do with cool. No one is trying to fit in by watching a cartoon. Is it that hard to fathom that people may watch it because they like it? Look at all the total bollocks that adults are supposed to watch, yer NCSI bollocks, yer whatever wars/truckers/miners bollocks, yer poe faced military spoogefest bollocks, yer wanky comedy populated my idiot man children and female stereotypes bollocks. Most cartoons are probably more mature than the shows aimed at adults.

For the record I’ve never seen MLP.

      edit:I accidentally a bollocks

    • Durkonkell says:

People in “liking different things and being individuals” shocker…

    • Koozer says:

I’m afraid it IS about being cool for a lot of people. Normal people just watch it and don’t feel the need to tell everyone on the internet about it.

    • Nick says:

Its happened before, just no one felt the need to make a song and dance out of it (Powerpuff Girls anyone?)

    • Mad Hamish says:

      @Koozer

Oh it is? I hadn’t realised. Thanks for sorting that out.

    • Chris D says:

Pretty much every awesome thing you’ve seen on the internet is because someone watched it and thought “This is great! I need to tell people about this!”

    • Koozer says:

Following my own logic to it’s natural conclusion I think I can safely conclude that every single person who has had input in the internet is a weirdo.

Try to understan my motto: I DO what I WANT, it doesn’t imply I MUST, CARE or SHOULD, but that I CAN.

  27. Joshua says:

Atleast it is better then the nude mods. All of them only adjusting females to have gigantic boobies whilst letting the men stay clothed. Bwuagh. Atleast be consistent. Be like that better bodies mod for Morrowind or something, but “Type3″ or whatever the hell it is called…

    This atleast has humour.

(Yes, I have an axe to grind. I was pleasently suprised that a nude mod was only at place #16 in the new vegas nexus, as opposed to #2 in the FO3 nexus…)

    • sassy says:

Male nude mods exist and plenty of the female ones have realistic sizes. I chuckle every time I enter Windhelm, crossing a snowy, drab bridge only to be greeted by two proud looking guards, wang hanging out.

  28. Blackcompany says:

Here’s an idea, seriously. Someone take this talent for retexture work, and turn the Dragons – or some of them – into giant Sphinxes or Griffons. This would:
    …..
    A. Be a lot cooler than Ponies
    …..
    B. Be an excellent resource for modders wishing to make mods based on new invading evils
    …..
    C. Be much cooler than Ponies
    ……
    Three very good reasons.

  29. Dubyahash says:

Brb, gonna set fire to my computer

  36. sassy says:

Must say the models are well done, too bad they turn back into dragons when they go too far away. They reminded me of Jade Cocoon 2 quite a bit which certainly warmed me to it much more.

Other than that have nothing to say, not going to install it but I was glad to see it.

  37. Maldomel says:

I have no hatred towards ponies, but this is a bit creepy (note to self: must play it).

Also, it is really amusing to see the reactions, and how many people can be trolled so easily over and over (not just here, but everywhere ponies are showing in fact).

  38. Fox89 says:

    Yay!

Important fact: The hair used on the Dragonshy (as I have dubbed it, probably not uniquely. That’s also the name of an episode so its twice as clever) model is actually that of Rainbow Dash. I hope this mod continues to be supported for the more comprehensive deadly fire-breathing Fluttershy experience!

I doubt I’ll install this on it’s own though. I might have to pick up the Zoidberg Mudcrab mod at the same time.

  39. John Walker says:

Oh good grief, some of you are such priggish whingers.

If you don’t find Skyrim’s dragons replaced with My Little Ponies both hideous and hilarious, then you’re very welcome to read any of the other fifteen excellent articles we’ve posted today.

This received disgust for a meme is by far the most offensive thing to have sprung from Brony daftness.

    • Fox89 says:

On that note John, excellent work today! My lust for news articles not tempered by a sense of mild betrayal against those sites who didn’t black out yesterday was becoming unbearable!

    • Mad Hamish says:

    • Chris D says:

    • Blackseraph says:

      Chris D

You really don’t have to I am sure. This post for example no one forced you to click on it.

Edit. you were actually wrong person I called out on here. This was actually meant for LuciusAxelrod. Sorry about that.

    • Chris D says:

      @Blackseraph

I find myself confused as to what your point is. I have neither complained about the topic in general nor anyone’s right to post their opinion. I have expressed my view of someone else’s opinion but as you have also just done this with me I’m not sure why that would be grounds for complaint.

Edit: For clarification I am in favour of posting about Ponies or whatever anyone feels is interesting or enjoyable.

Edited again. Ah, fair enough then, no harm done.

    • Stupoider says:

Since when did not enjoying what 3 year old girls do make you a humourless whinger? After the Randy Savage dragons I thought it was painfully obvious that nothing would ever amount to half the hilarity of that reskin. Maybe this might have been funny if it had beaten Randy to the end of the production line, but right now it seems like a joke that’s steadily being wrung dry. You could say it’s heading straight for the knackers.

But then again, it was just a reskin/mod. This is ANOTHER reskin/mod, except solely aimed at the brony division. Why would RPS throw out this useless article? I know you’re not ignorant to the feuds that break out between both sides of the My Little Pony debate, so why fuel the fire? Can we expect to see an article about every Skyrim dragon reskin or what?

    • Fox89 says:

“Since when did not enjoying what 3 year old girls do make you a humourless whinger?”

I don’t think it’s the not enjoying it that makes people whingers. It’s the whinging about how they don’t enjoy it. I, for example, don’t like World of Warcraft. So when I see a WoW article on RPS, I can either say “Ah, I’m not going to enjoy this so I’ll not read/comment here.” Or I can go into the comments and post how lame WoW it is and why people would be so much better off playing something I like.

Which do you think would be bad?

    • Thrasymachus says:

      Oopsie Daisy.

    • Diogo Ribeiro says:

Don’t worry, John. I’m sure they’ll leave when they realize RPS doesn’t mean Random Pony Slander.

    • Gira says:

The disgust is warranted and rational: manchildren should provoke innate revulsion, because they represent the dilution of the gene pool. Humanity is doomed if these mewling, giggling, well-upholstered homunculi are allowed to breed in large numbers. That these toothless creatures can attempt to defend their spiritual impotence by claiming the show is “well-written” speaks only to the fact that they’re all idiots and philistines.

Remember P.G. Wodehouse, guys? Remember Wilde? Remember Mark Twain?

      What happened?

    • Black Rook says:

I’m wondering why it’s the white knights that get all the attention. What’s so great or bad about a white knight anyway that it merits all this discussion?

They move in a bloody stupid pattern anyway, poncing around with all this two forward and one to the side malarkey! I just can’t be doing with that. Give me a sturdy striaightforward vertical or horizontal move with variable length anyday of the week. Not to mention that white is the losers side. Losers to you hear me, I’ll be checking your mate soon, so I will.

Suppose they’re better than bishops though, bloody arrogant bastards those guys.

    • The Magic says:

@Gira… that sure is an opinion you got there, though you should probably keep the selective breeding talk to a minimum

@BlackRook, how dare you insult the integrity of the church.

    • Black Rook says:

      @ White Magic

Oh our church is fine, it’s cuddly and friendly, it’s the other church that’s bad. And don’t get me started on the monarchy . . . either of them in fact. Just the other day my poor brother was sacrificed to save Black King.

    • Grover says:

Pretty much this. I’m just so, so tired of this. At least with Sonic fans they keep it in their little enclaves on deviantart. Some people reading this comment might not even know about the creepy diaper fetishists and the like that make up the Sonic fandom. Know why? Because they know when to shut the hell up about their weird obsessions.

    • Dys Does Dakka says:

  47. Buttless Boy says:

All right, I’ve never watched this show, but now I’m going to start just because all the moaning here is so ridiculous. That’s right, I’m going to force myself to be one of these “brony” things, purely because everyone who hates it is so annoying and I want to bother them.

That’s probably the worst reason I could have for liking something, but I’m very stubborn.

    • ffordesoon says:

      Cool!

    • Buttless Boy says:

8 minutes into the first episode: this show is bad, yo.

    • The Magic says:

Yeah the first two episodes aren’t great… They’re super cheesy and super girly. It gets better at 3/4

    • Woden says:

Oh god, don’t start at the beginning if you’re a skeptic. The first two episodes are not very representative of the show’s normal style. I recommend starting with episode 7 (IIRC), titled Dragonshy. Go back and watch from the first episode once you’ve decided you like the show and want to watch more.

    • pipman3000 says:

true fans start at the generation 1 series and work there way up from there

    • Buttless Boy says:

Well, I nearly made it to the end of episode 7. It was really, really bad. Sorry, guys; maybe people hate the brony thing because the show is awful.

    • The Magic says:

Well it’s not for everyone. Bravo for giving it a chance.

    • Fox89 says:

Well, you gave it a fair shot if you watched that far, can’t say fairer than that right? Was there something specific you didn’t enjoy or was it just generally not your cup of tea?

    • Buttless Boy says:

The writing, I guess. Lots of predictable, dull lines relating to the cliched kid’s show archetypes the characters all fit into. Most of the jokes were things I’d seen in cartoons when I was a kid (probably Powerpuff Girls). The characters, excepting the pink GIR-wannabe, were annoying as all hell. The plots were predictable and bland, at least the bits that I got through. The voice acting was sometimes pretty bad – mostly the characters with accents – but that’s forgiveable since it’s a pretty universal sin in kid’s cartoons.

It’s a gorgeous thing to look at though, if I ran it on mute it’d make an amazing screensaver.

Anyway, thanks for humoring me. Glad y’all like it, but clearly it’s not for me.

    • ffordesoon says:

Eh. You hate it, you hate it. Thanks for giving it a chance, though.

    • Dhatz says:

So this means people who consciously force themselves to analyzing things instead of enjoying actually exist? Not like I didnt expect it, but I just hadn’t met any of that kind. You get tolerated anyway.

  48. Olivaw says:

Come on, guys. I don’t watch the stupid pony show either, but you can’t possibly be insisting that this mod is creepier than the “Clean dirt off Caucasian females” mod.

One says someone is a manchild with a weird sense of humor, the other says VERY BAD THINGS about them as a human being.

    • Dhatz says:

Walt Disney already knew that people grow up but never stop being children. Besides it is safe to say it’s a show made to entertain all kinds of people, aka a childs show that doesn’t turn off the parents by being dumb.

  49. Beelzebud says:

Tonight I’m going to listen to Bill Hicks, George Carlin, Louis CK, and Eddie Pepitone, and remind myself what real comedy is.

  50. Danorz says:

mods for every elder scrolls game that usually involve putting dicks on things, and dicks on the dicks and then making the thing with the dick on its dick also have HH boobs with 10″ long nipples and also be some sort of fox that is 11 years old, and THIS, THIS is what you balk at, harden the fuck up

  51. The Magic says:

So i just want to ask people… If this was a transformers mod made by a grown woman would it garner the same hatred as a my little pony mod made by (I’m totally assuming for the sake of this argument) a grown man?

I know full well that plenty of women LOVE transformers, but it’s a show aimed at little boys to sell them toys. Surely that is truly perverse… right?

    • faelnor says:

The problem is not with custom content based on a fetish or a cartoon show.

The problem is the troubling communitarianism and emulation of back-patting, seemingly immature men, and their growing overabundance in the popular youth-on-the-internet-centric media we use to share. “Bronies” have managed to form a consistent blob of viral and utterly confounding fanboyism, choosing openly to throw in everyone’s faces their belonging to a fictional cartoon caste the likes of which are usually reserved to little girls.

As much as fratty communitarianism is annoying with 4channers, it is annoying with fans of MLP, but beyond that, their limitless naivety and almost uniform open lack of tact, restraint and, dare I say, self-confidence is what makes them, to many, disgusting.

    • The Magic says:

Firstly it’s a fallacy to equate bronies with 4channers since atleast half of them dont go to that site but other than that, I dont see how this is any different to other fanboyistic groups.
Skyrim itself has an absurdly immature back-patting fanbase of viral intent that make an alarming amount of content based on the game or memes extrapolated from the game. How many arrows to the knee have been loosed since Skyrim was released, with nary a care as to what website it hits. Surely that would be considered “throwing it in people’s faces” and if so is the Elder Scrolls community disgusting?

I also dont see how posting pictures or videos on youtube show a lack of self-confidence. Perhaps some show a lack or respect or tact by deliberately going to a part of the internet that has clearly rejected any pony related media and essentially trolling people with it, but to paint all bronies as such is using rather gargantuan brush strokes.

As for naivete, I’m pretty sure “bronies” are well aware that people get all het up about it, but simply don’t care that people like you find them “disgusting.”

Now I’m sure there are bronies who have done some “disgusting” things posting ponies where it’s innapropriate, but the vast majority (pretty much all) of pony related media that i’ve seen is in people’s avatars, or in forum threads specifically made for ponies, or on DeviantArt and Youtube. Perhaps some people will make a quick little one liner reference on this website, but that is incredibly rare and i would hardly call a single harmless in-joke “disgusting”.

EDIT: Oh you edited your post noting that posting ponies are calling oneself as a brony would be to throw it in another person’s face. I guess it all matters in the fashion that it is done. I mean if you told someone that you played PC games and were a big fan of RockPaperShotgun, would that be throwing it in their face?
You also made a rather odd addition about the show being aimed at little girls and having an expectant audience of the show being little girls. Surely my original post addresses that. Why is My Little Pony singled out for this single demographic ghettoism or “communautarism” as you put it? If we apply that to My Little Pony then why dont we apply that to everything?

    • faelnor says:

I’m not equating bronies with 4channers. I’d take a “disgusting” fetishist with good intentions any day over a mindless drone spewing shit.

How many arrows to the knee have been loosed since Skyrim was released, with nary a care as to what website it hits. Surely that would be considered “throwing it in people’s faces” and if so is the Elder Scrolls community disgusting?

Most of it is, yes. Tiring, mindless, naive.

As for the rest of your post, and besides you picking on the subjective part (“lack of self-confidence”) which I shouldn’t have used anyway, I can only talk about what I’ve seen and felt, ie. too many ponies brandished like an icon… for what?

    • ffordesoon says:

Well, I mean, the pony meme started on 4chan, as did the whole brony subculture, so it’s hardly surprising that bronies behave like 4chan people.

But, I mean, I kind of hate all the memes and brony obnoxiousness too, and I quite like the show. Not ironically, and not to be cool. I just like it. You actually do have a point about the internet creating a culture that coddles juvenile behavior, but that’s hardly unique to MLP.

    • The Magic says:

I can certainly see why it would be tiresome seeing it all over the internet if you dont watch or enjoy the show, and as long as you dole out negative opinions equally over all fandom then I see no problem in the opinion being said.

I disagree with your opinion but then that’s opinion for you.

    • faelnor says:

I watched the first two episodes, and it wasn’t bad. Well-paced, nicely animated, likeable characters, good message. I would definitely love to see my kids watching that show and I could see myself watching over their shoulder (well – if I had kids).

It’s really the whole memetic attitude* coupled to soapy naivety that gets to me.

      * which can be said of many things as ffordesoon said. Still, I don’t personally go to 4chan or other sites with high emulation or memetic content, so those usually get past me. In this case though, three of the forums where I regularly post had a “brony affair”. What touched me most was that posters I thought I knew started to come in a completely different light after changing their avatars and posting image macros of ponies whenever they could.

    • Dhatz says:

have you seen the image that says multiple women chasing one guy = acceptable, but multiple men chasing one woman = gang rape? World is THAT dumb.

  53. MegaPigeon says:

    poni should poni poni

but seriously, if you haven’t watched the show yet you should. the animation, writing, music and acting are all sublime, and it’s the product of Lauren Faust, so it’s awesome by default (and makes for hilarious irony when people profess their love of PPG and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends and have an unbridled hatred of all things pony).

also, people raging about cartoon horses is far more cringeworthy than people liking a cartoon better than most things on tv that has cartoon horses in it.

  55. Jahkaivah says:

Incidentally, does RPS have any plans to do an article on Fighting is Magic when anything playable is released to the public?

Not that I would blame you for being reluctant to do so given the nonsense that we sadly seem to not be above having.

    • The Magic says:

I think to not give them coverage because of raging readers would be quite a terrible state of affairs, and something RPS is not known to do. The game certainly looks fun enough to talk about

  56. T. J. McCormak - Parent says:

I don’t get it. This is just boring. It’s just a pony flying through the air. A pony! It isn’t even a horse. Or a polat bear. What happens if little Timmy plays this? He’ll go around thinking that pony’s have wings and can fly spreading peace all over the world and being environmentally friendly and making friends with people and sharing cuddles and wont learn that the only right way to do things is a good old fashioned bombing like they used to do back in the day. Honestly, what kind of example do we want to set our children. Apparantly even people the age of my eldest Jimmy, Jr, like this sort of thing. We can’t let out older children be at threat from this pony agenda either. This stuff must be stopped, even if it just boring.

  58. FunkyBadger3 says:

I had to look up what a brony was. I think that means I win.

  59. ffordesoon says:

I do think it’s funny that pretty much every comment from the bronies in this thread has been totally polite and well-mannered.

“Hello! I enjoy a television show!”

“I HOPE YOU DIE IN A FIRE YOU HORRIBLE HUMAN BEING AAAAAAAAAAA”

“Well, sir, I may disagree with what you say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it! Have a lovely day! Cheerio!”

    You know?

    • Fox89 says:

Sadly mere moments after you said that… it was all ruined :(

    • ffordesoon says:

Uh, really? I don’t see anything particularly ruinous…

    • Woden says:

That touches on the primary source of my fascination with the fandom. I find it endlessly fascinating that an internet subculture can lead its members to become well-mannered and polite. I don’t think that’s ever happened before; certainly never in a subculture as large as the brony culture. It’s the diametric opposite of standard accepted internet behavior (see: John Gabriel’s Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory). Widespread politeness on the internet is an astounding cultural change, and, I think, will wind up being seen as the lasting legacy of the brony culture.

TL;DR: Being a brony makes you a better person, for statistically significant values of “you.”

Okay okay, so reading all these comments made me really face/palm about the internet. This is a bunch of flamers here, who turn the entire comment page into a huge fucking flame war. Seriously. If you don’t like MLP why are you even here? Why does seeing MLP related stuff on your RSS make you feel agressive? You DON’T HAVE TO download that content if you don’t like it. Also why do you hate on bronies? I’m a girl and I like the show and as a girl I can say: I DON’T THINK MEN LIKING IT ARE GAY OR ANYTHING. And it DOES NOT make you more manry when you don’t like it. Girls who think that way are probably sluts. Sorry to say that ,but yeah… I just feel really insulted with all the hate about ponies. I’m a normal fan and I don’t spamm anyone with it, I just like it and occassionaly draw Fanart for it. And why am I being hated for this now? I didn’t do anything to you, and lot’s of bronies didn’t do anything to you either. There are some bad ones, but not all of them. There are ALWAYS bad ones in any fandom.
And by the way. I find the “ARROW TO THE KNEE” meme more annoying BY FAR. And do we dislike skyrim because of this? NO.
Okay so now I became part of the Flame War, but I just had to write that because it makes me sick how immature people are. :x
I think the mod is funny. NOT BECAUSE OF MY MLP FANDOM, but because its just redicioulous to mix something as FiM with Skyrim. It does SO NOT fit together, that it makes it funny to me.

Wrong song. It should be “By Sword and Shield”, because of “Gearshift found some Vodka” by ZombieZephyr

  62. LincolnSmash says:

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that the people bitching about MLP make just as big a deal about the show and shit up as many forums and comment sections on websites as the bronies themselves?

    • ffordesoon says:

      Far more, in my experience.

Then again, my experience is limited. I’m sure the show has its hideously annoying and/or downright creepy fans. I mean, I’m also a fan of Joss Whedon and Bioware, and I hate probably ninety percent of both fandoms. Because fandoms are kind of horrible.

    • NathanH says:

I have a rough method for determining how much I dislike a fandom. I take the number of people who like the original thing, divide it by the amount of fan fiction. The smaller the number, the more loathsome. Dragon Age leads by a long distance, it turns out.

  63. The_Great_Skratsby says:

    Not like this RPS.

    Not like this.

  64. Dances to Podcasts says:

Now how do we tell which comments are real and which are RPS censored?

  65. MegaPigeon says:

Hey anyone seen that Adventure Time show?

GOD WHAT SORT OF FAGS LIKE THAT SHOW

DAMN PEDO FURFUG FAGS LIKING SOMETHING

You’ll never catch me doing anything even vaguely related to that show for 5 year old girls.

I’ll be to busy bench pressing cars and arm wrestling grizzly bears.

  66. Adriaan says:

So now there is but one thing left to ask… Is Craig Pearson indeed a brony?

  67. AMonkey says:

I thought the horribly immature fad that is my little pony would be done by now, how sad I am that I was wrong.

    • Dhatz says:

the thing is fads die out, nonfads dont. it’s as permanent as any other comic/animated show fandom. Massivity is the exception, what other fansite has 100 000 000 unique views in one year of existence?

  68. jezcentral says:

    I like “Chuck”.

  69. dudeglove says:

This brony shit needs to die. There’s nothing wrong with the cartoon in the slightest, it’s the retarded Internet subculture whose bafflingly aggressive determination to carve their niche in society would make the organizers of a gay pride parade blush.

  70. Muzman says:

    Six Pages of Comments!

  71. Jackablade says:

Excellent work. You’ve flushed out all the Bronies and a significant number of the Arrow in the Knee memetics. Now it’s just a matter of chaining up the doors and razing the thread to the ground. We may lose some good posters caught in the trap, but I think you’ll agree that the casualties will be worthwhile to rid the site of this scourge once and for all.

  72. SparkCloud says:

Now I have a reason to buy a $700 laptop and Skyrim. Screw PS3! (still love you PS3)
