Ridge Racer Unbounded’s Editor Takes On Trackmania

By Craig Pearson on March 22nd, 2012 at 12:20 pm.

Crrrrrrunnnchh
If there was a three-way pile-up of Ridge Racer, FlatOut and Trackmania, where they all hit with such force that the tangled mess of wreckage fused together and not even surgery could separate them, then when the doctor removed the bandages (you know, after he’s tried to operate on this broken metaphor) what would be revealed would be Ridge Racer Unbounded. I’ll confess, I didn’t know that Namco’s spiffing looking racing game was being made by the same developers of the FlatOut series, but all the latent excitement I’ve had about it now makes sense. But for them to take something as speedy as Ridge Racer, mix-in the physics of FlatOut and then go and toss in an editor that’s inspired by Trackmania, my interest is no longer just latent. Video is below-low-lo.

It’s Riiiiiidge Racer! The basic editor is for wimps. Give me advanced and the chance to put down loads of smashables.

Ooh, March 30th. That’s clooose.

I wasn’t excited for this game to come out at all…and now I really can’t wait for it because I love Trackmania and this looks like it’s a wannabe Trackamania.

I wasn’t excited for this game to come out at all…and now I’m quite interested because I love Flatout and this looks like it’s by the same developers as Flatout and might bear some relation to it.

Forgive me for quoting a Youtube commenter, but:

So it’s Ridge Racer meets TrackMania as designed by the FlatOut developers.

        … Yeah, I’ll buy one.

  2. pitak89 says:

I just want another burnout game, but this looks like it will take its place just fine.

  3. Chizu says:

I am now a whole lot more interested since its gone a bit trackmania-ish.
Looks like it could actually be kind fun.
I already enjoyed Flatout 1 and 2 (the less said about 3 the better), so TM style level creator with physics and destruction? yesh please.

  4. AmateurScience says:

Every time I read the word ‘unbounded’ my back brain screams ‘UNBOUND!’. But it’s a word, so I shall attempt to surpress my inner word dick.

  5. UnravThreads says:

    It’s Ridge Racer!

    Riiiiiiiiiidge Racer!

  6. Astrosaur says:

If this has off-grid placement like it appears, this will be even better than Trackmania! Cannot wait.

  7. Montanha says:

Wow! This is like a modern day STUNTS! A must buy for me!

  8. Jim9137 says:

    its beautiful

    like stunts reborn

  9. rocketman71 says:

    Doesn’t look bad.

We’ll see, if it has proper LAN supports, I might buy it. If it comes with obligatory DriversWithCarsNetShitLogOnBookWhatever, like every single shitty driver game lately, I’ll pass.

    • djbriandamage says:

Yeah, no more obligatory webcam Burnout licenses with shlongs, please, driving game devs.

  10. Godwhacker says:

Bear in mind that all this is possible in Trackmania 2, and that’s only £20.

Still… Ridge Racer handling vs. the Trackmania 2 approximation of Ridge Racer handling does very much appeal.

  11. JonClaw says:

March 30 for the EU. The US won’t get it until “later in 2012″… unless that changed.

  12. RagingLion says:

I generally phase out at the point where ‘Ridge racer’ is mentioned as a name but that footage actually looked genuinely cool.

  13. Keymonk says:

Holy crap on a cracker. That looks quite nice.

  14. Synesthesia says:

As long as it has the pacman secret car, im in.

  15. rockman29 says:

Wow… even after being invested in hating this game… that just flipped my world upside down.

  16. El_Emmental says:

I really hope Bugbear entertainment did a great job on this one, the Flatouts were just plain awesome, they really deserve success

    to me it looks like RidgeRacer’s high-speed-handling meets Flatout’s tons-of-props-&-extra-side-missions-crazyness meets Trackmania’s Z-axis-crazy-ramps/loops-&-super-easy-editor.

it’s gonna be hard to explain to myself why I shouldn’t be self-grounded from buying new games until I finish my vegetables never-ending backlog

  17. Radiant says:

    I JUST BURST.
LIKE A STEPPED ON CARTON OF MILK.

    Please be good.

    • Radiant says:

      Also “Unbounded”?

What kind of fucked up abusive relationship are you asking of me?
      It’s UNBOUND you dirty bitch.

  18. clockwerkgoblin says:

Looks fancy, but what’s with those loops everywhere?! The love for cars going upside down has been a myth for me ever since i first met a hot wheels track 20 years ago.

  19. Tritagonist says:

Interesting, very interesting. Will keep an eye out for this one. Track editors are just way too much fun.

  20. MD says:

Oh gosh, this could be wonderful. If they nail the handling and sense of speed, and don’t stuff up anything else too badly, it’ll be great fun.

  21. Wedge says:

Wonder how easily sharable custom maps are? I don’t think I’d have the time to make much myself, but if the game had people making a bunch of awesome maps…

    • MD says:

Looks like it’s just a matter of arranging pre-made tiles, so it’d be disappointing if they weren’t very easy to share!

  22. Rik-the-Viking says:

Shut up and take my money already!
