CD Projekt Red’s New RPG: Cyberpunk

By Jim Rossignol on May 30th, 2012 at 6:00 pm.

EXCITING UPDATE: It’s a AAA RPG of Cyberpunk, the pen and paper RPG. It is being made by Witcher and Witcher 2 veterans. They’re saying stuff like “Advanced RPG mechanics” and “mature content”. Customisable characters, different classes. Lots of weapons. Non-linear. “Cutting edge looking game”. And also “not a game for everybody, for mature audiences.”

Cyberpunk RPG’s creator Mike Pondsmith is there, talking about it: “I love Bladerunner, I love that kind of future.” Yeah. That’s the stuff.

ORIGINAL STORY: The mystery sci-fi game from The Witcher devs CD Projekt Red is about to be announced over here. I’ll get more details up here as they arrive. All we have so far is the teaser image of a punk with techno-glasses and a gun (above) and the knowledge that it will be some kind of cyberpunkian thing.

CD Projekt does cyberpunk!??? This has GOT to be good. Excited!

    • alabastersteel says:

Lol broadcast went to hell literally as soon as Pondsmith took the stage.

      • Morte66 says:

Pondsmith is a definite worry, he’s been a waste of space since the millenium. Still feeling pretty eager here, though.

    • catmorbid says:

This is fucking beyond amazing and has to be the best fucking news this year holy shit i’m too psyched to even bother with punctuation and shit holy fucking fuck this is beyond fucking beyond amazing fuck me!

Sorry bout the language (not really), but I love both Witcher games and the whole cyberpunk genre and pnp, so fuck me this is batshit crazy awesome and sounds really awesome! They better not screw it up though. But I doubt they will, based on the two excellent games they’ve already made.

    • Wreckdum says:

When I fist saw that drawing I immediately thought of Shadowrun. I got a partial boner.

      • Aedrill says:

Shadowrun is taken. CP is awesome anyway, so you can keep your boner.

        • lurkalisk says:

I’ve never been so ashamed to laugh…

          • westyfield says:

Hmm, so it turns out that CP means something other than ‘cyberpunk’ to me…

          • Aedrill says:

            Oh shit. That was… unexpected.

          • Valvarexart says:

Sir, you have been browsing the wrong type of internet forums. I know you have, don’t argue about it.

          • Jackablade says:

Exactly how much am I going to regret Googling this?

          • westyfield says:

            @ Jackablade

Depends. How much do you like your door/windows/lack of police in your home?

          • lurkalisk says:

            @Valvarexart

Yep, as I said, ashamed… Granted, it’s strictly lurking*, no participation.

*In regard to the forum in general. I don’t even lurk in most areas therein, let alone -those- kinds…

          • roryok says:

oh god. I don’t even want to know.

          • theleif says:

Oh, no no, it’s cool, he’s taking it back.

      • Quarex says:

You do know that a Shadowrun game from the original creator is already being made after a successful Kickstarter, right?

Anyway, count me in as excited. I preferred Cyberpunk to Shadowrun, so I am glad I got to back the latter before I knew about the former.

    • lurkalisk says:

I was hoping, no matter how unlikely, it was based on the Sprawl universe… Oh well, this is still excellent news.

      • Jesse L says:

You might like this – streamlined tabletop PnP Shadowrun hack posted online yesterday. Not mine but I love it so much. If you love regular Shadowrun but find it too complicated (like me), you may find this useful. Still in development: http://www.networkpipeline.com/_sgi/Shadowhack.pdf

      • stiffkittin says:

Cyberpunk 2020 is just about the best interactive interpretation of Gibson’s work ever published though. It lifts everything from Neuromancer et al. FNFF was an interesting and brutal combat system too even if it had it’s problems. Should help the designers a lot having an existing framework.

    • apa says:

THIS is what I’ve been waiting from the computer rpgs since the 90′s!

    • skoll says:

This is probaly the best studio for the best possible IP. I have dreamed of this.. I’ll go sit in a corner and drool for a while now.

    • Casimir's Blake says:

If they don’t make it first-person, it won’t be the immersive experience it deserves to be. I don’t expect this to happen, since this wasn’t an issue CDP seemed to care about in The Witcher.

      • Werthead says:

Something that’s interesting about this is that THE WITCHER had a fixed protagonist with a distinctive look, so it made sense to have him on screen at all times (plus it was based on the NEVERWINTER NIGHTS engine, which required it). CYBERPUNK, presumably, should allow you to create your own characters and it won’t be necessary to adopt a 3rd-person viewpoint. It would be better if they gave you a choice, a la SKYRIM/FALLOUT though.

        • DestructibleEnvironments says:

No no, ala VTMB. Pick a good RPG instead of those casual games! Gaaarrgh I’m a forum troll feed me your earth chow!

  2. Nick says:

    yay cyberpunk RPG!

  3. Chaz says:

    It’s a little bit late 80′s early 90′s style.

  4. Emeraude says:

Color me interested. Preferably with subdued colors though.

  5. Mistabashi says:

This game might be good or bad. Perhaps average.

  6. MistyMike says:

It will be called Hard Deus Syndicate.

  7. Hoaxfish says:

The conference is up on ustream right now:
    http://www.ustream.tv/CDProjekt

thewitcher.com appears to be overwhelmed for me atm

  8. Smashbox says:

Their servers seem to have melted.

  9. Rattlepiece says:

    Servers went boom!

  10. subshell001 says:

    The Switcher

    • Zenicetus says:

Sounds good, although I worry about adding “different classes.” One reason The Witcher was such a great game was that you could inhabit a pre-defined character who could be strongly written.

That could succeed again in a cyberpunk world with a character like Case from Neuromancer, written with a compelling back story and defined personality and skills. If they go open-ended on player creation, they could be entering the Bioware RPG zone here, and I’m not sure that’s their strong suit.

      • FunkyBadger3 says:

Case isn’t a great example, as he has very little agency*.

But yeah, go ‘punk. Who doesn’t want to kill Johnny Silverhand, right in the face.

*Hmmm, just forget the last 10 years worth of AAA games there…

  11. MythArcana says:

Retina scan, DNA test, Social Security #, and home address required for purchase! lol

  12. Trent Hawkins says:

    yay cyber boobs!

  13. Jackablade says:

It’s Cyberpunk. Capital letter Cyberpunk. Eeee.

  14. Lobotomist says:

Its based on Cyberpunk PnP RPG !!!!

    Amazing !!!!

  15. Shortwave says:

I’m VERY into cyber punk.. Sort of consider myself one, heh.
Witcher is probably the most I’ve enjoyed RPG, ever..
So this is awesome news and I seriously don’t look forward to a year of updates as I eagerly wait for what will likely be this kick ass game changing title.

They’ve already put DA in it’s place if you ask me.
NEXT UP. Show MA what scifi really is? : P Boo-yea.

  16. Iskariot says:

I have watched part of the conference.
    They make hard promises.
And they promise everything I always wanted in a Cyberpunk shooter,
I will build an altar to CDProject in my living room now.

  17. Alexander Norris says:

Holy shit, Cyberpunk 2020 CRPG made by RED.

    In other words, yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss.

  18. muskieratboi says:

    HOLY SH.. CP2020?!?!?

    *Cybergasm*

    Must.. have.. Rockerboy.. class…

  19. ran93r says:

Having played the pen and paper for years, I wee’d, and not just a little bit.
    Colour me excited.

  20. jakonovski says:

    There better be Johnny Silverhand.

  21. Yehat says:

80s aesthetics and remembering the “punk” in “cyberpunk” would be a welcome approach, although it remains to be seen if CDProjekt has the sense of style and understanding of the genre to pull it off. Still, this looks genuinely good.

  22. Tyrone Slothrop. says:

As a massive fan of William Gibson, Deus Ex, Human Revolution, Blade Runner and System Shock… I’m fucking tumescent right now.

  23. NotSoSmilingJack says:

And here I hoped that CDP Red will come up with it’s own IP…

  24. fitzroy_doll says:

Such good news. Really looking forward to this.

  25. gunny1993 says:

Ughhh bladerunner …. grey on black on brown dystopian future

  26. foda500 says:

I need this straight into my veins.

  27. Muzman says:

Cool your heels folks! There was a translation error. The game isn’t actually based on the Pen n Paper Cyberpunk game, but the Billy Idol album ‘Cyberpunk’.
You can still expect bad eighties hair at least.

  28. Skabooga says:

Exciting! There is always room for more cyberpunk, especially done by a studio with such a good reputation.

  29. Emeraude says:

Damn, Mike Pondsmith is on board ?

    • FunkyBadger3 says:

Hmmmm, not necessarily a good thing. I say that as someone who played Cyberpunk 3 (or was it called 3.0?)

      • Emeraude says:

Agreed, but still I have huge respect for the man, if anything.

        • FunkyBadger3 says:

Absolutely. Aaah, Rough Guide to the uK, now there ws a sourcebook. Umm, one that Pondsmith wasn’t involved in at all I believe, but anyway…

Hope its set during the Stormfront campaign.

      • Hoaxfish says:

Hopefully there’s some balance between faith to “book rules”, computer game “playability”, with everything laced through with cyberpunk atmosphere and intelligent story.

    • Gasmask Hero says:

Since nobody has mentioned prying it from his cold, dead fingers then yes.

If I remember, he has the reputation of being…stubborn. Difficult, if you like.

  30. foda500 says:

    Mike Pondsmith’s voice is amazing.

  31. AlwaysRight says:

    SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!

  32. suibhne says:

    Fantastic.

  33. Xardas Kane says:

I adore Blade Runner. I adore CD Project and have been following them closely for more than six years now. In other words, I’m in video-game heaven right now.

  34. serioussgtstu says:

They mentioned that there are two teams at CDP working on triple A RPG titles. That could be confirmation that the Witcher 3 is already in development along with Cyberpunk.

  35. Hug_dealer says:

Its CDPR. They already proved they can hang with the big dogs, and even outdue them at their own game.

If there is any dev out there that can pull off a great story, interesting characters, some of the best visuals out there(graphics quality wise, and atmosphere wise), along with non-linear story telling, well only 1 dev can pull that off, its CDPR. No one else has delivered a game like The witcher 2.

Seriously the witcher 2 took every other RPG ever made, and made them it’s bitch. The sheer quality, the magnitude of the world, and the stories, with more consequences for your actions than any game ever made, and graphics whether Xbox 360 or PC pushed the genre forward. From an pretty much unknown dev with a small budget compared to AAA studios. The game just pretty much puts all genres to shame when it comes to what they accomplished. Look at the budget of COD and compare what that game actually delivers. Or compare the Mass effects, or Dragon ages.

TBH the bar might be set to high for CDPR now, but i feel like they can deliver. It is plainly obvious they love what they do, and when developers love what they do, it shows in their games. DA2 was made with no love, just money, and it shows.

  39. Enzo says:

    Holy fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

  40. Archonsod says:

Dammit, there goes my money and social life.

  41. Walter Heisenberg says:

It’s time a studio to name themselves “AAA Games” to hopefully kill this very overused marketing buzzword that the press are all too happy to parrot.

  42. Iskariot says:

Finally, Finally we will get a true cyberpunk RPG/shooter.
    This is a wonderful day.

  43. Reefpirate says:

I’m troubled by the AAA moniker… because as we ALL know, triple A games will from now on be online-only DRM ridden pieces of shit thanks to the uber-success of Diablo. Our cyberpunk dystopia has already arrived.

  44. Dances to Podcasts says:

They should get Rutger Hauer to do some voice work for this. Just because.

  45. Seafort says:

Is this PC exclusive? Xbox exclusive? or a bit of both :P

Damn excited about it though. Hope it has all the hallmarks of a great CDP game :)

  46. kael13 says:

Was just thinking i had a giant Deus Ex-shaped hole in my heart the other day.

I am going to play the shit out of this. Super pumped!

  47. StiLt3D says:

I put my credit card in the disc drive but nothing is downloading… sonofabitch..

they should change it’s working title to Blue Balls -.-

  48. seniorgato says:

    Oh hell yes!

  49. SirKicksalot says:

I’m monitoring for Wizardry’s input on this.

  50. wodin says:

At last a RPG to look forward to.

  51. Shagy says:

    TRIPLE SHWING!!!!!!!!

  52. Lowfyr says:

First Shadowrun Returns under development by the Shadowrun inventor and now CD Project RED with Cyberpunk 2020? Did I die and go to heaven?

  53. Guhndahb says:

Oh yeah! I’m super excited about this!

  54. ShootyFace says:

Best news I’ve read all day!

  55. Tom OBedlam says:

Holy shit storm. It’s not just a cyperpunk game, it’s a game based on Cyberpunk 2020 AND Pondsmith is helping with writing! Oh my fuck, I’ve wanted this game since I was 13. Seriously, that was the first pnp rpg I ever played. Fuck, this is the best news possible. If you’d asked me who I’d want to do Cyberpunk 2020, I’d have said CPR. Fucking yes!

  56. Wizlah says:

This news can only be considered great. Worth it for the nostalgia hit in my brain – the minute I saw Cyberpunk RPG I totally flashed back to some black and White rpg box art from the late 80s.

Glad to see they’re going to try out different classes. Hope the system doesn’t lean too heavily on combat and has skill checks and the like. Presume it might if they’re working with an rpg as their source material.

  57. Stevostin says:

Somehow I always failed to keep interest in any CDProjekt RPG (I bought both, but…) which is pretty rare – I finish most of the thing I buy. That being said I admit they have some serious potential. I hope this one will be the one for me. Getting out of the commitment to books may help. I also pray for first person view, especially if there’s shooting. TPV for shooting is nearly allways a “no go” for me.

    • Emeraude says:

Same for me. Their games are always promising, they do so many things right… yet in the end I find they miss the mark and end up unsatisfying overall.

So here’s to hoping this game will be their masterpiece.

      • Hug_dealer says:

I’m curious what you guys dislike about their previous games?

They have created some of the best stories and characters out there, and have weaved a deep involved plot that evolves based on your actions, and lacks the plotholes of other stories. The witcher 2 requires atleast 2 playthroughs in order to get the full story. Things that were left unanswered in one playthrough, are answered if you go down the other route. Honestly there is no other game out there that rivals the depth of story of the witcher 2, and the NPCs you meet, and the actions you take. I challenge anyone to find a game that does as much.

Graphics wise, the game is a masterpiece also. From the high resolution of them, to the small details used to build a convincing world for you to explore. It is all done with a level of quality not seen in most games.

Combat. That is the low point of the game, but at the same time, it is also better than most other action games available. The sheer amount of combat animations that are all beautifully animated and keep in a realistic fashion help to achieve a symphony of death as you lash out at your foes. I prefer turn based and things like that, but the beauty of the animations of characters swordplay was amazing. They didnt need big special effects or over the top animations to hide anything. All attacks blend smoothly with each other, the amazing smooth animation of when you target an enemy behind you and he does a stab backward rather than turning and doing the usual swing is a step beyond.

Just watch some of the excellent animations.

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy1fH1axTy0

I truly am curious of the complaints against W2. Just because i love it doesnt mean everyone does. My only dislike is the combat, but the animations more than make up for it for me, along with everything else.

        • LionsPhil says:

Same old same old fantasy blah, for my part. Yes, I know, based on a book, not actually 100% Tolkien rip-off, but that doesn’t really change that I don’t find the setting interesting.

So doing something with cyberpunk is quite promising.

(Also that whole woo-ing and trading card thing was pure social pariah awfulness, but hopefully won’t be reappearing. And from what I remember the combat was a bit uninteresting but we can presumably expect a shake-up there wth the addition of GUNS.)

          • Hug_dealer says:

Actually the world is totally not the typical fantasy world. It is much more brutal and dark. More Conan than Lotro.

The other things you mentioned are from The witcher 1, part 2 is entirely different. Everything about 2 is different.

          • wodin says:

Hmmm..if you think the books The Witcher is base don are anywhere near Tolkien then it’s bloody obvious you haven’t read them. Dark, grim, Polish folk tales more like. As close to Tolkien as Moorcock books.

          • LionsPhil says:

I said “not”, guys. Not Tolkien rip-off.

Swords and mud-farmers just isn’t my preference of setting, no matter the colour of your orcs.

          • Hug_dealer says:

thats not what you had written first.

Also. No such things as orcs in the witcher world.

  58. Sparkasaurusmex says:

I was ready to be upset that it wasn’t Witcher 3, but honestly I’d rather have this.

  59. Maldomel says:

Holy cyberdoozles! This is good news!

  60. Petethegoat says:

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

  61. Mungrul says:

Oh wow, the Cyberpunk RPG was one of the mainstays in my group of friends. We started with original Redbox D&D, tried a little GURPS, mixed the universes of Runequest and the similarly ruled Stormbringer, played a shedload of Living Steel and Warhammer FRP and graduated to Shadowrun and Cyberpunk. While I have a hard time remembering my Shadowrun characters, I have loving memories of my full-on psychotic clown from Cyberpunk, Brian The Fractured. Our GM would attempt to make ever more complicated Brian-proof adventures, only for him to do something completely unexpected and completely break the thread of the adventure every time, and we had such fun with it.
Hell, Chris, our Cyberpunk GM, was probably my favourite GM I ever had.
He even experimented with P&P RPG PvP in a very inventive way, where one of our players became the leader of a corporation, and without the knowledge of another friend, implanted him with a cortex bomb and forced him to do loads of shit :D
That ended as I recall with the guy with the cortex bomb getting close enough to the other guy and killing them both at the same time.

Don’t get the wrong impression mind you, I absolutely adored Shadowrun, and being a massive Queensryche fan, reading the original rulebook gave me a big kick, as a lot of their artists would decorate graffiti’d walls with the Queensryche logo.

But yeah, Cyberpunk holds a very special place in my heart.

  62. JohnnyMaverik says:

    Cyberpunk <3 ^_^

  63. Apolloin says:

Oh wow! Surely this is too good for them not to fuck it up egregiously in some way or another.

Don’t care, though, 0 Day purchase.

  69. PopeJamal says:

I’m actually pretty excited to see this. Between the general awesomeness that is CD Projekt and GOG.com, I think someone is trying to woo me away from Valve as being my favorite Developer/Digital Distributor combo.

  70. Gasmask Hero says:

Now someone needs to come up with an effective Paranoia CRPG. Not even that, just make it a ‘shooter with benefits’, which may suit Paranoia way more, and my teenaged dreams will be complete.

    • LionsPhil says:

Much as I love Paranoia, I’m not sure how well a game that’s largely about getting away with weasely bastardry while everyone tries to do the same to you would translate to having the GM (and other troubleshooters?) replaced with an actual boring old real-world computer.

    • theleif says:

I was just about to post this. I would be a very happy puppy if, let’s say Double Fine decided to make a game based on it. It does not even have to be an RPG.
I think Shiny Entertainment of old (Giants, Sacrifice) should have done it. Why didn’t they? Look, now you made me all upset.
      You cyberpunks.

  71. Noodlefighter says:

    Shit just got real :DDDDD

  72. E_FD says:

Those are sure some silly-looking glasses we’ll be wearing eight years from now.

    Well, daymn

This has been a fantastic year.
Shadowrun Returns Kickstarter, and a Cyberpunk RPG by CDPRed.

the awesome…. it’s just way too much.,

  74. Supahewok says:

Looking over the comments, the love and enthusiasm people are showing for CD Projeckt seems remarkably similar to what people had for Bioware pre-2009.

    Alas, how times change…

Hopefully this is not indicative of the future.

    • pilouuuu says:

That’s really sad… Bioware is a company that I want to love so much, but they’ve been constantly letting us down lately…

  75. brkl says:

Jesus that sounds good. Even the original RPG system is really good.

  76. wodin says:

I would prefer it Isometric with turn based combat though…

  77. LostViking says:

YES!!! Cyberpunk and CD Project Red is a match made in heaven!

This is an insta-preorder if ever there was one :)

  78. orient says:

CD Projekt Red + Neuromancer = my dream game. And it’s going to happen. Wow.

  79. Sardukar says:

Bring me my smart-chipped Sternmeyer. And low-imp Interface plugs. And skinweave. Pain Editors! Skullplate, tech-hair, Mr. Studd and Big-Rip equipped cyber-arm with built-in micro-missile launcher!

  80. Kadayi says:

Interested, but I’d like to see some working footage soon. Also I’m hoping in the looks department the game will be innovative rather than derivative. The whole mirrorshades/mohawk look got real tired a long time back. A cyberpunk future where everyone doesn’t look like Sigue Sigue Sputnik rejects would be nice.

  81. reishid says:

From sorceress, elven, succubus, and tavern wench sex to sexbot 9000 loving.

  82. Bweahns says:

The dude in the picture looks like the violinist from Eurovisoin a couple of years ago. The dude who performed alongside Epic Sax Guy.

  83. rustybroomhandle says:

CD Projekt are like the HBO of gaming. They put out good stuff, but think that boobies is mature content.

    • roryok says:

I prefer the swearing. Can’t watch non-swearing cop shows after The Wire. They just seem so fake.

    • Hug_dealer says:

Really, cause the boobies arent what made the witcher 2 so interesting. It was the involved plot. The death and deceit coming from every corner. Racism, rape, and other subjects that arent for the family.

I honestly think that alot of people have never even played the witcher 2, don’t know what mature content means, and simply heard that it had boobies and immediately think hurdurrrr thats really mature.

  84. MadTinkerer says:

Man, between the kajillion D&D spinoffs, the kajillion Warhammer & WH40k spinoffs, Magic: The Gathering on Steam, Shadowrun, Champions, Traveler, the White Wolf MMO that might eventually be completed, and now Cyberpunk, it’s a crying shame that Deadlands hasn’t got a proper video game spinoff yet.

No GURPS game I understand, because GURPS isn’t a setting in itself. But Deadlands is!

  85. Urfin says:

Yeah baby, more wires in ze skull! Genuine good news.

  86. Atrak says:

brilliant, of course multiple classes might be difficult to implement depending on which ones they allow.. i’d be interested to see if they let you play as a media, or rockerboy etc. Still hopes are high and staying there for now.
