Rift: Storm Legion Trailer Stars A Colossus, His Shadow

By Nathan Grayson on June 22nd, 2012 at 3:00 pm.

And yet, he still managed to miss the tiny archer man.
Rift may have its shortcomings, but goodness, it can do the big beasties well, can’t it? Unsurprisingly, then, the first gameplay trailer of the upcoming Storm Legion expansion follows a typical day in the life of a colossus stomping around on somebody else’s stomping grounds. And that’s pretty much all it shows. It’s kind of eerie, actually. There’s no music or fancy film editing razzmatazz – just a colossus shrugging off spark-sized fireballs, doing his best Godzilla impression, and awkwardly bellyflop-leaping onto a bridge. He’s pretty clearly destroying the city, though, so this ought to make for quite the world event.

Sadly, Mr Cole Ossus here won’t be coming to/destroying a city near you until this fall – though, on the upside, it’ll apparently ship with a free copy of vanilla Rift. However, the equally free three-faction open world PVP update‘s dropping next week, and that looks to shake up things up a fair bit. Apparently, even crafters will “play a vital role” in battle, which sounds quite atypical of the kill-collect-kill-some-more MMO formula. Now if we could only get some other game to replicate Star Wars Galaxies’ cantina dancers. Or really, just pre-NGE SWG in general. Urgh, I’m gonna go be sad now.

    Oh hey it’s a Digimon

    • JD Ogre says:

Hmm. You’re right. Looks like a Zudomon without his shell or hammer. Crossed with another, though – those pillars on his back look very familiar…

Rift seems to be one of the better of the typical MMO’s to come out in the past few years. They seem to be adding content faster than any MMO out right now.

The only problem is after 2 years in Wow, and a brief stint in LOTRO I don’t really want typical MMO’s anymore. It is best explained by penny arcade http://penny-arcade.com/comic/2012/05/02

For those too lazy to look at the comic the first panel is:

“Why Don’t Star Wars and Tera make quests a living thing like Guild Wars?

Why Can’t Guild Wars and Tera make me part of a great story?

Why aren’t Guild wars and Star Wars fun to play?”

    • Valvarexart says:

You should try Mortal Online, especially with an expansion that really pushes their vision into daylight just around the corner…. It’s a sandbox MMO all about giving the players control over the game. Be warned, though; it’s quite hardcore and it might turn inexperienced players off.

        Sounds unfun.

I don’t want serious from games. I want involvement and mild challenge. And I don’t want low-quality social interactions.

MMOs are surprisingly not all that far from this typically. They just need to allow the player to adjust the solo challenge upward as desired. And they need better tools to support and encourage quality social interaction. The combat can use mild sprucing up but it’s not that bad as is.

The problem with the games I’ve played is they encourage you to play until everything is long since overused. Encourage people to tune in and out as content is released, and pay for content. Don’t put in lots of carrots for grinding.

        Be creative.

Tell stories well that come to completions.

Support playing with arbitrary friends without barriers.

There’s no amazing breakthrough required, just getting the pieces right.

    A Colossus, His Shadow

I see what you did there.

    • phelix says:

At first I thought it was a reference to His Divine Shadow, y’know, from LEXX.

    • db1331 says:

Makes you Wander what he was thinking with that title.

      • NonCavemanDan says:

Certainly going to draw some Agro when you attack that thing.

        • gummibanane says:

If you make a pun, make sure you do it right. The horse is called ARGO not Agro…

Edit: Sorry NonCavemanDan I didn’t want to sound aggressive or nitpicking with that comment, lol.

You are of course right, it is called Agro. I should refresh my memory once in a while ;D

          • PopeJamal says:

Once you see a pun thread, you can be pretty sure that all interesting conversation in a given RPS thread has already occurred. It’s a sign to move on.

          • NonCavemanDan says:

Sorry, gummi, but the game disagrees with you (although what Wander calls out does sound a bit like Argo so you’re not the first to make that not really important mistake).

  4. Jesse L says:

Not a terrible entrance for a god-monster. But I’ve seen better.

  5. Tei says:

Its a weird video. Completely random. Make it look like theres a game somewhere where you play as a giant high fantasy robot killing punny heroes. Maybe the devs of Rift have developed the technology to shrink players and make then look like silly RTS units.

  6. Billzor says:

    What? No wub?

  7. byteCrunch says:

Anyone else hear the windows error noise at around 1:46-1:47 or is that just me?

  8. Bonnie82 says:

I don’t really want typical MMO’s anymore. It is best explained by penny arcade.

  9. Trent Hawkins says:

I like how at 1:16 people are just standing around going “oh, this guy again? BORING!”

  10. Jayson82 says:

I am predicting that Soon after the rift devs will announced that for an exclusive daily fee a single player will get to pilot that colossus when it goes on its rampage.

  11. Redsplinter says:

Seeing this just a few days after reading this comic seems frighteningly appropriate.

  12. dandy-pandy says:

Did anyone hear the windows sound in the background ?

he might be getting mail :D

  13. aircool says:

The new PvP should keep me reasonably interested until GW2.

  14. paddymaxson says:

Wow….this trailer looks atrocious, the animation is so stilted, it looks like bad machinima.
