A developer diary for forthcoming offroad racing game WRC 3 feature Italian devs Milestone explaining why they thing this is the best rally game ever made. A good part of the reason for that belief rests with their new engine, which allows them to play with fancy lighting and particle effects, as well as employing something called “satellite modelling”, which appears to be constructing their 3D tracks based on overhead satellite shots? Something like that.
Anyway, it appears faithful to current rallying realities, so go take a look.
The game is set for an October release.

Can someone explain what these guys mean by a new high-profile particle effects system? That’s some technobabble if I ever.

It’s just random buzzwords, but I guess what they want to say is they are proud of their particles looks.

Oh, so they`re doing the same thing as HAWX` terrain modelling, except a bit better? Also, Jim has a mini?

This game looks worse than Dirt.

i’m totally in the dark about the this series – i wish there were more than Codemasters and EA investing in these types of games, and welcome anybody else doing so. I’m going to have to look into WRC2 before i have any excitement about this beyond curiosity though.
Have any of you played the WRC series? any fans?

“Reproduce the effects required for rally racing”
*proceeds to show off mud caking and visual damage effects*
So uh, what about the tire, suspension, and engine simulation?

Just forget it. This will be an arcade racer, and even for that the handling is “meh”. Check the previous article about this game on RPS. There was a video showing some (3rd person) gameplay.

Well, these are the guys who made Screamer, so if it’s an arcade racer it should be one hell of one. I’m interested to see how this turns out, though not exactly excited.

Here’s a recent video preview done by TeamVVV (not spam despite the appearance of the URL): http://youtu.be/h29X9fw_azI

That actually looks much better than I was expecting. By “looks” I mean the stage design and the handling model, not really too concerned about the graphics.

Here’s an RBR run of the same area for comparison.

Best rally game ever made? They mustn’t have ever heard of Richard Burns Rally, which doesn’t bode well for the developers’ competence in developing rally games. It does seem like it could be some arcadey fun, though.

Am I the only one who thought that looked like a car in skyrim in the screenshot?

Dunno if anyone’s seen this, but inside simracing did a quick preview. This really looks surprisingly good so far. Not Richard Burns Rally or Rally Championship 2000 quality (I doubt we’ll ever see anything like either of those again) but still pretty good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Th_OVkttH0g
It certainly looks far better than the last 2 DiRT games.
