Assuming THQ lives that long…
If you want to help keep them alive, drop a penny or two at the Humble THQ Bundle
29/11/2012 at 22:42 TNG says:
I was only missing Saints Row 3 out of that bundle but those are all quality titles and now everyone has a great chance to buy and try them.
And if anyone wants to scratch an eastern front itch while waiting for CoH2, they can try the CoH Eastern Front mod, it’s actually quite nice with an awesome soviet playable faction.
30/11/2012 at 00:06 caddyB says:
that’s a very good bundle. can’t miss it unless you already own everything in it, any game there is more than worth the average price.
30/11/2012 at 08:23 Rhuhuhuhu says:
Be careful for the false advertising there!
They tell you that you can buy all those games for a cheap price, but there is a trick. If you own any of those games already, you won’t get the extra copy that they advertise! Bloody scumbags.
30/11/2012 at 09:38 El_Emmental says:
It’s written on the bloody site, right under the Steam key with all the games.
They’re not advertising “already own the game ? gift the extra copy” anywhere, I think you misread something somewhere, here this is the Humble THQ Bundle, not a regular Steam bundle.
(maybe when they wrote “Steam keys” you were misleaded and thought it meant “individual Steam key for each game”)
And well, since you’ve got a separate key for Saint Row 3, you’re free to get a $1 copy if you want to gift the rest.
THQ is dying, this is not the time to ask for your nickel back.
01/12/2012 at 11:29 Sc0r says:
Anyone asking for a Nickelback should be ignored anyway.
29/11/2012 at 22:39 Soulstrider says:
Honestly after Men of War, I don’t know if I will ever be able to play CH. The first game became so bland after I got MoW.
29/11/2012 at 22:54 subedii says:
For me it was the opposite.
To me MoW felt so finicky and micromanagement heavy that I felt as if I was trying to be concerned with the minutiae of individual soldier control across far too large areas of conflict and a far too constrained rendition of FoV that meant your troops were basically unaware of their surroundings to an extent that wasn’t just tunnel vision, but something I’d consider outright negligence in any combat scenario.
Granted that the new CoH is also going to be featuring constrained FoV now, but I suspect that it’ll be limited by terrain, and not nearly to the extent that it was in MoW.
I could deal with the rough and unpolished nature of the game (I play a tonne of games like that), but the gameplay dynamics themselves didn’t really feel like they were thought out too thoroughly. I’ve been told it works far better in multiplayer, but I never tried that.
29/11/2012 at 23:23 Synesthesia says:
yeah, i’m on your side of the ballpark with that one too. I’m the general, i’ve got a tactical view, i cannot bother to be the central nervous system of every soldier in the battlefield. I tried multiplayer once, it was a waste of a map. Players just held a certain point of the map forever, reinforced it and died until the other one was out of reinforcements or viceversa. Any flanking maneuvering would be outmatched by a single emplacement, or other cheap stuff.
30/11/2012 at 00:36 Doth Messar says:
By both of your comments it’s very obvious you only gave it one try.
30/11/2012 at 06:35 Ateius says:
I have played MoW extensively, both single- and multi-player, and I agree with them. It’s very micromanagement heavy. Sometimes this can be awesomely rewarding, when you pull off an incredible tactical maneuver with just a handful of men, using the incredible granularity of the game engine to do enact stunts that CoH’s much more streamlined approach would never consider, but most of the time it’s just really finicky and annoying to deal with.
I still play MoW on occasion, because it’s really got a feel all of its own. However, I prefer CoH for having fun. I can enjoy the spectacular sights of a battle while concerning myself with the larger movements of forces, rather than stare at an infantryman’s inventory screen while trying to drag-and-drop ammo into it before he gets sniped from half a mile away.
30/11/2012 at 08:12 Rich says:
I really need to have another try at MoW. I took a horribly long time to do the first mission, then took one look at the number of men I had to control in the second mission and ran away screaming.
Telling your sergeants to take their men around and flank a position, I can handle. Ensuring every man in a battalion has the right hat is just too much for little old me.
30/11/2012 at 10:48 ShowMeTheMonkey says:
I’m with Soul. After I played all of the MoW games I just can’t go back to CoH. Strangely I find it too much like an arcade game now. Almost diet MoW. I like that MoW is so complicated and crazy. Some of the stuff you can pull off in multiplayer is crazy.
I once made a guy rage quit after I killed his tiger tank with one of those Russian armoured cars from point blank range. Ahhh bliss. Anyone want a game of MoW now?

Darksiders, Red Faction: Armageddon, Metro 2033, Company of Heroes, Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, and Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor all for whatever you want. ALSO, Saints Row the Third if you pay over minimum $5.45
Been going like crazy. I saw 80,000 units sold, and couple hours later it’s at 187000 and counting. Just over a $Million so far. Hope it helps THQ out :)
29/11/2012 at 22:51 Steven Hutton says:
I already own all of those games. And they’re all good strong showings. How are THQ struggling so badly?
Did they publish some huge turkeys about which I just don’t know?
29/11/2012 at 22:55 Dominic White says:
THQ are practically bankrupt at the moment. They just got some legal protection that stops people they owe from suing until early next year, but the company is in big trouble.
A lot of their better games recently completely flopped. Darksiders 2, despite better reviews than the (decently-selling) original, was a commercial failure. Their uDraw tablet was the biggest killer, though. There’s apparently 1.4 million of them unshipped, unsold, gathering dust in warehouses. Nobody bought it. Nobody.

Which was perfect in my case because I had all bar SR3 and Darksiders, which I didn’t really want. The other key went to my nephew :)
29/11/2012 at 23:31 JD Ogre says:
Ah. So this explains why there are three Company of Heroes games in the Bundle instead of giving room to two other properties.
30/11/2012 at 04:59 tmargul says:
Well, really one and it’s expansions. But yeah, they are definitely featuring games that will help promote upcoming (or in the case of Darksiders, recently released) sequels. Metro and Saints Row also have stuff in the works, and I imagine Red Faction will be, if they get their situation stable.
Besides, are you really all that upset that you didn’t get a Homefront game? I guess a 40K game would have been cool, but otherwise it’s a pretty good representation of their work.

He also deals with so called “Logical Insanities” in a later cast, analysing the mentality the Dresden bombers and other chaps had in order to allow them to perpetrate war crimes.

Have you ever played Company of Heroes ?
It’s in the title itself: “Heroes”. It’s an entertainment software, not a history-teaching software, nor a ww2 estern front simulation. Even Men of War, who is a little bit (but not that much) “serious”, is far from the reality.
Hell, look at the character design, it’s a little bit cartoony and stuff (I get a comics vibe from it, personally), which is the bloody point of the Company of Heroes series: spectacular WW2 squad-management game, like when you played with action figurines when you were a kid.
CoH does that perfectly, expecting simulation-like experience, when tank-sims are all over the place since the early 00s, is just wrong.
30/11/2012 at 10:00 El_Emmental says:
@Sarissofoi
I think your sources are too biased to be reliable.
Germans pow were much better treated by the US (despite the soviet propaganda trumpeted to rally the eastern germans during the Cold War).
Also, war crimes do not justify genocide (or any other war crimes): are you seriously saying soviets should have killed the remaining 30-to-50 millions of german civilians ? You’re a freaking monster.
30/11/2012 at 10:43 shaytan says:
Russians are better people that, despite all the bitterness and despair caused by the German invasion – most were sympatetic to the German civilians, which were caught in the middle of the fighting.
This memorial in Berlin capture the essense of the general feeling:

30/11/2012 at 13:17 El_Emmental says:
Of course the soviets treated the populations of conquered territories better than armies and empires did during the 19th century, they fully learned that gaining the population support and reducing post-battle civilian casualties is very likely to help you for the intelligence gathering, reducing partisan/infiltration activities, and making logistics easier to set up.
(something the americans somehow completely forgot in their two current middle-east wars, despite learning it the hard way during the Vietnam War).
But it is baloney to say the Red Army, after all the suffering, the casualties, the wounded, the sickness, the malnutrition, the sieges (bloody Leningrad Siege lasted for more than 2 years ! 2 freaking years !), didn’t raped and killed in their final push toward Berlin, and shook hands with the men unlucky to not die in the ruins and the ditches.
With all the war crimes commited by the SS units and some units of the Wehrmacht (mostly made of eastern europe totalitarian enthusiasts), the torture and the extermination camps, the Red Army had “reasons” to act like that and they did.
On the other hand I’m not glorifying the US, they were *too* friendly with germans PoW, you know, von Braum & pals. Not to mention South America during the Cold War. But it is a known fact that german prisoners, when not used in the few labor camp/units to genuinely rebuild road/cities (and not just die moving rocks out of the roads), were subject to terrible living conditions.
30/11/2012 at 18:13 shaytan says:

While such cases had been recorded, they were crushed by the commanders in form of field tribunals, to avoid exactly the loss of the support from local population. Most soldiers that were involved in raping and outright slaughter – were punished by death on the spot, it was being closely controlled by commissars.
> With all the war crimes commited by the SS units and some units of the Wehrmacht (mostly made of eastern europe totalitarian enthusiasts), the torture and the extermination camps, the Red Army had “reasons” to act like that and they did.
Care to back this up with some fact? Red Army had better things to do than rape and slaughter their way into Berlin, separate cases hardly constitute as a regular practice. Red Army was in a bitter fight with wounded yet still strong enemy.
30/11/2012 at 18:08 Werthead says:
German POWs definitely were not treated well by the Russians. 90,000 surrendered at Stalingrad and only 5,000 lived to see home again. The remainder were kept in poor conditions in prison camps and when typhoid broke out, the Soviets seemed distinctly unsympathetic in helping deal with it.
There is a reason why, during the closing weeks of the war, German soldiers right up to the rank of generals (and even Himmler, until he thought better of it and killed himself) abandoned the eastern front in their thousands to flee west and surrender to the Americans, French and British. They knew they’d have a much higher chance of survival and not being mistreated.
And yes, elements in the Red Army did indeed rape, murder and slaughter their way across eastern Germany on their way to Berlin. Just because the Germans did it to them first in 1941 does not justify that response.

‘Average’ German soldiers in Russia basically believed Hitler’s BS and followed the orders of their commanding officers. General von Reichenau of the 6th Army, a noted anti-Semite, ordered his troops to hunt down and kill Russian Jews with enthusiasm as they rolled eastwards through Russia, even slowing the military advance to do so. When von Reichenau died and Von Paulus took over, Von Paulus ordered a halt to these massacres, not out of any moral reason but because he believed it was the sort of thing the SS alone should be doing and that it was distracting the troops from purely military objectives (such as their impending attack on Stalingrad).
I’m sure some individual German soldiers did avoid carrying out any crimes towards Jews or civilians in Russia, Poland and elsewhere, but the majority did indeed ‘just follow orders’.

Not sure what you are trying to get at, your own link seems to support his point of view.
30/11/2012 at 10:24 El_Emmental says:
People seem to forget that most of the massacres on the eastern front were done by “wehrmacht”/SS units made of eastern europe recruits, hastily formed to cover the rear (especially to fight partisans behind the front line), but unable to properly fight military battles against soviet forces. It was clearly visible when the soviets counter-attacked and the germans lines broke.
They were acting like very mobile militia, going from villages to villages to “cleanse” the place, and were often made out of pro-nazism young men of these eastern europe countries, taking advantage of the momentary german occupation to do these massacres.
Actual military-able units in the wehrmacht didn’t had the time to spend days in villages to shoot civilians and pile their bodies. Killings of civilians did happened though, mostly because the upper commandment didn’t forbid killing of civilians, letting soldiers shoot civilians, some out of revenge for the partisans harassing/sabotaging, some of pure sadism and cruelty.
Saying the wehrmacht didn’t commit war crimes on the eastern front is 100% wrong, saying the wehrmacht itself (and not the upper commandment through SS/”wehrmacht” units) systemically organized killings of civilians (jews and not-jews alike), is not accurate.

Pretty grim because the USSR was in tough conditions, they were taken care of as much as possible – not your summer camp experience by any means, but far away from concentration camps that Russian POWs were thrown into by nazi regime.
