The secretive world of Minecraft snapshots, the semi-official weekly updates that Mojang puts out to test the updates, delivered a doozy of an update last week. It supports animated textures. The theory goes that people will use the textures to animate small blocks. So you could have fizzing fire crawling along a Redstone circuit, or maybe a you could use it to animate a powered circuit, like the frightening magic picture above. Cool, huh? Of course, some people have to take it too far.
You could just use it to animate every texture in the game, turning the world into a sliding, vomit-inducing puke hole of horror. This reminds me the carpet my old bank used to have. You’d stand in there, in the long line of robbers and old ladies, and the pattern would slurp and shift around in your peripheral vision. I honestly had to stand there and hold onto the counter, to fight the feeling of falling it would churn up. You have been warned.
Welcome to Pukecraft! The system is hugely flexible, and is only really constrained by PC power. Do you know what that means? That’s right! Behold!
Obviously the music is added for effect. I actually downloaded it to make sure I wasn’t being trolled. While it makes the game a bit unstable, and I had to allocate more RAM to it using Magic Launcher (which also let me run the new snapshot without replacing my main Minecraft install), but it worked. I even walked up to the wall and punched a hole in the video.
It was fun having a porn free Minecraft while it lasted.

Yeah, I had a stint in texturing months ago where I added a glint to diamonds, and a sheen to refined metals. It was pretty cool.

I think it would be more interesting to have a shader or something that make the vertext of leaf block “wave” in X,Y,Z. Or something to make the nature in minecraft look like afected by wind. This feature looks like the type of “explotable” thing that modders will make really shine.
14/01/2013 at 15:42 Gap Gen says:
Someone modded shaders to do this kind of thing a while back, iirc.

15/01/2013 at 06:31 zbeeblebrox says:
It’s an option in the mod. It’s set to off by default, since for actual gameplay it’s kind of annoying (what with the leaves swaying but their hit boxes staying in place). But it does look awesome in motion.

Certainly on par with some of Doom 2′s more egregious animated textures transgressions. Rotating flesh pillars, I’m looking at you. And vomiting.
15/01/2013 at 18:45 Rawrian says:
If I remember correctly, it was more like a case of a special effect – you could make any texture on a wall scroll, it’s just that it was used only for those flesh pillars.

Since the 1.8 beta the engine has had some serious issues with large parts of the landscape becoming invisible, even on my desktop with 8gb ram and 64bit W7, plus it crashes on 32 bit systems if you have the draw distance on full. The game also runs worse and worse every update.
Not that it matters, I’ve played hundreds of hours and seen everything/done everything.
14/01/2013 at 20:30 FionaSarah says:
This feature comes as a side effect of rewriting the rendering engine AFAIK.
14/01/2013 at 21:03 spectone says:
I thought it had something to do with the way multiplayer and single player code bases were unified. Originally single player did everything in the one process. Now there are two separate processes, the single player game runs a server as one process and client as the other. I think that somehow the server process is not gaining enough processing power and has trouble loading in parts of the map when needed.

I don’t know, I visit my hometown like twice a year and try running Minecraft on an old pc every time. Last week fps was considerably higher. There’s this bug with invisible blocks, though, but I suspect it might have something to do with integrated video – never saw it on my main PC.

There’s nothing really special about this…
Any client that supported textures better than x16 already supported animated textures (At least I assume the HD patcher is what supports animated textures, I just use optifine since that bundles a bunch of stuff.)
It is good however, after Notch announcing that nothing better than x16 would be supported, to know that they actually came to the realization that HD textures are actually good to support.
