Handy: Poker Smash Hits Greenlight

By Adam Smith on January 22nd, 2013 at 4:00 pm.

Much-loved XBLA/iOS column puzzler, Poker Smash, recently appeared on Steam Greenlight and the creator confirmed that he is working on a PC port, albeit one that will be lacking multiplayer at launch. Multiplayer modes will be added as soon as they can be ported without any quality loss. My memories of the XBLA version are of a fast-paced, combo/hand-building game, which shares some of its genetic makeup with Tetris Attack. There’s no word on a release date yet but you can vote for the game on Greenlight, or perhaps watch the video below to see if tumbling, exploding playing cards appeal to you.

Poker, eh? As a wise man once told me, you don’t need a war to have a face.

You’re cutting your nose off to spite your warface here, Adam. There is no such thing as an appealing game without explosions. All real gamers know that.

Music sounds good, game looks very generic. War or face or not.

If only we had a series of games like this for the PC that involved jewels. You hear me, Poker Smash? Just be jeweled already.

Loved Poker Smash on XBLA. It looks like a typical match-3 but the addition of Poker hands added just enough to spice it up and the presentation and clever touches made it shine.

Got to play it early on PartnerNet, and got a few weeks practice before it launched. Then bought it on day of release. Only game I ever got to number 1 in the global leaderboards. :) Managed to keep top spot for – ooh – hours, before it was comprehensively trashed and I never got another look-in.

Game might look generic but there is an awful lot of strategy that goes into it. The poker rules alone make you think about it a good many different ways. Not just looking for 3 numbers of the same value. Have to look for flushes, straights, royal flushes. Game is pretty much like Tetris attack. The bombs and being able to slow it down also make for some sweet chains.

Hell I’m going to vote to greenlight it. It’s a badass game, and you shouldn’t be fooled by how simple it looks on the surface.
