Hey, You! Play Games With RPS Communities!

By Jim Rossignol on February 8th, 2013 at 4:00 pm.

You’ve got no excuse. There’s a DOTA 2 group, for friendly lane-thrashing heroics, there’s a group playing marines and aliens (the 21st century’s Cops & Robbers) in Natural Selection 2, and there’s even a Wurm village going up. I am not saying that you have to play Firefall with poor old nCore, but you really should. And there’s always a chance for you to get involved in organised Mechwarrior nights. Hell, organise something yourself. I know the Planetside groups are always looking for squad leaders. And that Eve corporation is still going, against all the odds…

Running an organisation in a game that could do with RPS players? Want to play something niche and looking for partners? General sociability is for you.

But I don’t like playing games with other people. They scare me :(

    • mooken says:

for a second there, I thought I had sleep-commented on this thread. or that this thread was resurrected from last year. so bizarre.

so this is what it’s like when doves cry.

  3. Bodge says:

Our Arma community Folk Arps is still here, playing arma on a regular basis.

    http://www.folkarps.com

    • Capt. Eduardo del Mango says:

Bodge, I am shamelessly piggybacking your comment to promote Rock, Paper, Shattered – it started as a place to organise sessions for the now de-populated (and awesome) Shattered Horizons but does Monday sessions for various different old MP games it’s hard to find players for. Always open for suggestions, requests and impromptu game sessions.

      • Bodge says:

You are a terrible person Mango, I have to remind you this on a regular basis and you never remember.

    • stryker777 says:

RPS introduced me to Folk ARPS in January, and I’ve been playing with them since. A great bunch of guys (and girls, sometimes) who welcome newbies like me. Folk ARPS plays on Sunday at 1:30pm (Central) and Tuesday as well. Checkout their website; very tongue-in-cheek and fun.

Folk is serious about getting the mission done and have lots of fun doing so. Dying gloriously in battle is almost as honored as victory.

On Folk ARPS, I’m known as Stoner, not by my RPS username.

      • Cuddlefish says:

Another relatively recent (Nov ’12) attendee – I’d never played multi-player ARMA prior to, but getting integrated and having fun / getting killed was quick and painless. Really cool folks, they are.

  4. SandmanXC says:

I got blood bowl recently and I’m trying to learn so I can join one of the Leagues :)

    • ChainsawHands says:

Just jump in; what’s the worst that could happen? Most of us aren’t entirely unpleasant…

      • President Weasel says:

I am. However, I hide it quite well.
Join the Divisions of Death and play blood bowl with us, you’ll be more than welcome. Matches once every slightly-more-than-a-week. Still about three weeks til the new season starts , though, so in the meantime why not join the challenge league for some ad-hoc games against human players?

        • ChainsawHands says:

Oh yeah, Pweasel’s just an absolute monster, avoid him.

    • frenz0rz says:

I can attest from my one game’s worth of experience in this league that the DoD is great fun, particularly if you’re brave enough to pop onto the RPS Mumble server for loud cries of triumph and despair.

  5. Inverselaw says:

Its Freedom Fridays tonight for all you NC players on Miller, come join and watch us flip sunderers!

    • Brun says:

Keep dreaming, smurfs! The glorious Republic will crush your laughable Freedom Friday!

      • Phantoon says:

Remember, they have to schedule it for Fridays, because their corporate leash-handlers only allow them one day of freedom.

    • CMaster says:

In the Vanu Sovereignty, every night is Disco Night!

(Although the RPS Vanu outfit only has “organised” events on monday, wedensday, thursday and some sundays)

  6. Halbarad says:

I like people to some extent but just too much time on single-player games, and the MP ones I do play nobody else here seems to!

  7. DonJefe says:

    What? No Crusader Kings?

    • Captain Joyless says:

Crusader Kings 2 multiplayer isn’t in such great shape these days. Out of sync errors are too common, and Paradox doesn’t seem to be interested in fixing them. They don’t communicate about it much either.

      • DonJefe says:

You are right, unfortunately. But when it works, it is just such a marvelous thing. Dang…

  8. The_Great_Skratsby says:

Hoo I do like the sound of MechWarrior nights, even if I’m on Australian time n’ ping.

  9. Ian says:

I remember when we had enough FUMBBLers that we didn’t just have tournaments, but a SCHEDULE of tournaments.

    Good times.

    :(

  10. BTAxis says:

I don’t usually get into games much, so I never get to a point where I can play competitively. As such I don’t typically play with others, since I’m an eternal noob.

That and I have the social skill of a badger that’s been dead for three weeks.

    • Hardlylikely says:

On the internet, no one knows you have maggots where your eyes should be.

  11. jha4ceb says:

Not to mention a super-friendly RPS Guild Wars 2 guild on Gunnar’s Hold:

  12. Rovac says:

one day I have to play Dota 2 with you guys. Been playing awhile from across the continent and still getting the hang of it
Unfortunely, I’ve no mic for proper communication

  13. Pryde says:

If I join this Dota 2 group – can I expect that during games my mom will be insulted only in the most appropriate, insightful, fun and creative ways possible?

    • Llewyn says:

“Yo momma so uncouth she’s been known to pass the port to the right.”

      • Martel says:

        haha, love it

      • Ian says:

Sir, your mother is so ignorant she recently served me red wine with white fish at a recent soirée and I have subsequently been forced to strike her from the list of people with whom I am prepared to engage socially. Good day.

      • ezekiel2517 says:

The “original” Dota 2 RPS crew moved from getting new people into the game to having CM with experienced players. I don’t know if the rest of the members contact themselves, but perhaps try the other group linked in here, just in case.

    • Synesthesia says:

I was wondering the same thing! I’m loving the depth of the game, but its general population just keeps eww-ing me out. Do you guys foam at the mouth as much?

      • HexagonalBolts says:

Rock Paper Shotgun’s Casual DOTA Chums steam group is aimed exactly at combating these kind of DOTA players, we’re just a chilled out friendly community who run pub and casual 5v5 matches every day
        http://steamcommunity.com/groups/casualdotachums

        • Lars Westergren says:

Oh that sounds exactly like what I’ve been looking for. I’m in, hope I can get some game time squeezed in this weekend.

  14. Gap Gen says:

We still very occasionally play Scourge of War – your best bet is to join the Steam group Rock Paper Secession and pester us. Weekends tend to be a good time as it tends to require a few hours to really put the wind up the enemy. A complete lack of experience is encouraged.

EDIT: Oh, and if you liked the header image, it’s certain that your avatar will have facial hair as awe-inspiring as those three gentlemen, or more so.

  15. Bodge says:

Oh I forgot, I am the current Mayor of the Wurm Village. If you would like to join us we are on Release and give “bodgemonkey” a message and i can add you.

  16. Captain Joyless says:

DOTA 2 group, here I come! Beware my carry omniknight!

    (giggle)

  17. felisc says:

Yes, come play with us NS2 folks indeed. We’re playing every sunday at 8pm gmt. Vanilla game and sessions of The Faded are on the menu lately.

    • WoundedBum says:

Yes. For once this chap has given good advice. Ignore him the rest of the time though.

      Play NS2!

    • airtekh says:

Yay, we got plugged in the post and I didn’t even have to ask!

Yes, come play with us, join the mumble server so you can hear the variety of European accents we have on offer.

  18. SuperNashwanPower says:

What larks must be had when you bump into that guy you called a shit fuck monkey in an argument thread last week.

Bravo team, fire awkward cannons now

  19. MOKKA says:

I’m still looking for people who might be interested in getting into Spy Party (or who already know how to play the game). I could ask in the lobby but I thought it might be more interesting to play with people from here.

  20. Easy says:

Thanks for the shout-out Jim! (nCore).

    (*bearhug*)

Now come out and play peeps!

  21. DrScuttles says:

Generally I frown upon multiplayer games. Frown with the frowny face of someone with no mates to play online with. And the perpetual fear of being the one guy in something like Dota 2 who lets the whole team down by being a bit shit.
However, I have been playing a lot of Space Station 13 recently. Despite a horrendously steep learning curve it seems quite fun. I’m still crap at it, but at least there’s roles with little actual responsibility to play as.

    • Kitsunin says:

Space Station 13 seems incredibly interesting, but back when I tried it I was too scared to even try to do anything useful.

      • DrScuttles says:

Yes, it seems to me that it’s main problem is the learning curve (wall?) that new players find themselves up against.
You can read about it and watch Youtube guides / introductions and then wander around as an assistant trying to pick things up, but all that means that it can take hours before you have even a basic grasp of what’s going on. That’s understandably way too long for some people.
Apparently there’s a remake being worked on which should help alleviate the horrendous lag, UI and tutorial problems. It’ll probably still need to be played with a wiki open though.

        • Kitsunin says:

There are some quite recent tutorials on youtube that are extremely useful for basic information, so I’ll probably try getting into it again. The wiki is great for specific information but in a general sense it is terrible at giving a proper introduction to the game, so I recall being bewildered with all this information, but no idea how it could possibly be useful. It has always sounded like the sort of game I would love, if I could only understand it.

          • Phantoon says:

            Easier to understand than DF.

Miner is best job. You get a free RIG suit, you have no responsibilities other than getting R&D their sampler platter, no one cares about what you’re doing, you automatically form a brotherhood with other miners, the clown and mime leave you alone because they know how it feels to be unloved, you can find both live facehuggers and deadly weaponry on the asteroid, and mining is the most relaxing and laid back activity in the game.

Some tips for the best class:
Ripleys are great for mining, and mass drilling. Never turn an offer from Robotics to make you one down, since a Ripley can be all that stands between you and changelings.
Try to get a toolbelt and insulated gloves from wherever you can. Most CEs appreciate having an extra pair of competent hands available for when their team inevitably goes missing (fuck you changelings fuck you fuck you) and this will allow you to get into any abandoned outpost/abandoned station if you fall into space
If you slip into space, you can throw things the direction opposite from where you want to go to turn around. Fire extinguishers are also emergency space jetpacks.
Don’t use your emergency air tank, you’re wearing a RIG suit. Get a large air canister from the dispenser next to the suits, and wear that on your suit.
Put your ID in your PDA for extra room, and keep your PDA on your ID space (this is for all spacers)
The outpost is space Switzerland. Don’t take sides in anything unless it threatens the station. In case of Syndicate, jumping off the station will make you immune to space nuke, as the station is on a different Z level. Same with AI malfunction. In fact, prepare for this every round by throwing a bunch of jerky into your emergency box, just in case. You can wait out the worst of anything on the derelict.
Speaking of which, the derelict is the home away from home for any enterprising miner. There’s a number of ways to get to it, and there’s almost always one area still secured with air. If you happen to be packing a lot of metal still, you can fix the place up, return to SS13 to loot motherboards/ask R&D for motherboards, and become a sovereign station with all your own stuff. You can even set some of the solars back up if you have enough wire, and really get the place running again.

Once things go to hell (they always do), nick yourself a pair of magboots, some security equipment, and become space batman. Or just jump off into space, and tell everyone that asks for metal to eat their own pants. In case of space spiders FUCKING RUN OH CHRIST FUCKING RUN FOR YOUR LIFE FUCK THOSE PEOPLE NUKE THE STATION IF POSSIBLE JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!

    • MOKKA says:

I vaguely remember a diary about this game being my first contact ever with RPS, almost got me over the edge back then, but did not had the courage to try this game out.

  22. kstress71 says:

I’d love to join in and disappoint my teammates in DOTA2. It gets boring just disappointing people in real life.

  23. Mugsbaloney says:

Can anyone point me in the direction of the RPS mumble/ mechwarrior channel within that mumble?

  24. Phantoon says:

You’re on all the wrong servers/too far away for decent ping. That is why.

So really, it’s all your faults, not mine.

    • Kitsunin says:

I really wish there was a community in the US/Oceania that is as awesome as the RPS community, for stuff were ping matters.

  25. Carbonated Dan says:

I would dearly like to join in merriment with your fine forumeers

Unfortunately my forum account (SandyDan) has been waiting in vain for an activation email these last three months

  26. darkmouse20001 says:

Anyone up for some Men of War?

    • SuperNashwanPower says:

      “Up for some men”

      Heh. Heh heh.

    • Jim Rossignol says:

I really want to play some more. I had a blast with Ass Squad.

      • SuperNashwanPower says:

Because you are a man of significant stature and accomplishment, I will not notice the 12 metric tonnes of homoeroticism contained within your words, or snigger a bit in a very very juvenile way indeed. Not even a bit.

        Tee hee. Bottoms.

      • darkmouse20001 says:

Is that a date Jim? I’ll get a warning order to my Ass…squad. Jesus, I suck at innuendo.

        • SuperNashwanPower says:

Lol you said “suck”. Thats a filthy word. Like “crevice”

  27. Radiant says:

    oi slags.

Sign ups for season 18 should be open soon.

    • Radiant says:

aka the Frozen Synapse Fastcardrivinggolfshottaflying tournament of cocksurism and tourism

    • ColOfNature says:

      Succinctly put.

Anyone wanting a heads-up when season 18 is warming up can PM me in the forum and I’ll tip you the wink.

      • Radiant says:

        Yes!
Also the Frozen Synapse Goodbabyfathertoppunnanylovah tournament of jizzem and cataclysm

        • ColOfNature says:

Your enthusiasm does you credit, sir. Your other -isms are more questionable.

  28. CMaster says:

I’m not even playing it any more, but there really should be a mention of the Rock Paper Shotgun Frozen Synapse League.

It’s in its 17th season now, and even had its own YouTube show for a while.

Also, play planetside with us. Watch my orders get you horribly killed.

  29. DestructibleEnvironments says:

If Aliens: Colonial Marines doesn’t turn out to be complete bollocks, will a nice RPS member pretty please make a group for it? I would love to play with you handsome chaps. Okay love is a strong word.

  30. Mario Figueiredo says:

Wow. I was totally taken by surprise there’s a Solium Infernum community here!
    And last post was today!!

I do remember the game being very well received at RPS. I even remember a series of articles on the writers playing it with each other (which were great fun to read, btw!). But honestly never thought of checking out for a community there. Much less one still active.

I’ll have to jump in. I must!

    • Heliocentric says:

We are active too, a few games languish with inactivity but no-one is stopping you running a few simultaneously.

So far I’ve been in 7 finished games vs 2 that stalled so that should give you a good hint of the player base.

  33. Steed says:

No doubt this will be lost in a sea of posts, but is there a War of the Roses group?

  34. Nim says:

Is there a World of Warcraft RPS guild?

  35. Vlad The Impaler says:

We should really have a Ricochet server. Seriously.

  36. sinister agent says:

All these replies, and not one mention of the special game where everyone sends me their bank account details and it’s tremendous fun for all involved?

  37. hamburger_cheesedoodle says:

I’ve really really been wanting to Mechwarrior with other people, but I don’t live in a place where the time zones make it practical to do it with the RPSRM group. :[

  38. Lazarus_Soma says:

Ah damn I’d dearly love to play some Dota with all of you fine chaps here at RPS, but alas my dear sweet version of the game just simply doesn’t want to run at all for me :( ah well back to LoL when the net gets uncapped.

  39. Ham Solo says:

Is there a World of Tanks brigade?
