I simply based my post on the fact that many of my gamer friends and quite a few in the gaming communities i hang around hadn’t even heard of the kickstarter at all. (Even though I had linked to it a few times). Though I guess most if it is simply kickstarter fatigue.

I was talking to someone about this and they convinced me that Kickstarters that are in Euros never do as well and rarely get funded compared to the Dollar ones.
For one; the ones in Euro are ultimately more costly to both Americans AND Europeans. For Americans to support them, they not only have to deal with monetary conversions but often there are bank fees associated with them as well. Sometimes up to $5; so at the end of the day the thing might be $20 to back the game but what you end up paying is $25 to $30.
Furthermore, lack of culture and education combined with a little xenophobia makes anything not in U.S. dollars scary and puts off a lot of Americans. I’m not saying all, I’m saying a lot. I think it’s pretty much established that Americans tend to spend more money in movies and video games than Europeans (Movies gross almost as much domestically in the U.S. than worldwide grosses combined); mix all that and it explains why something with such a huge community and following didn’t get funded within the first week.

I think part of the problem is the value of the euro compared to the dollar. It might not be so bad if Americans knew 20 euros was going to actually be less than 20 dollars, but it’s the other way around and that could contribute to the scariness.

As a Canadian, who has backed way , way more projects than I should have, I can personally confirm that I haven’t backed it for the £ reason.
The first time I went to back a project in pounds I was surprised that I needed to do it through Kickstarter itself, and initially shied away. A week or two later after making sure something strange wasn’t going and Kickstarter truly did work that way for projects in pounds I tried again. It refused to take my visa card. After double checking I hadn’t filled in the info wrong, it just didn’t like my card for some reason.
So I just don’t bother now.
I might try again if it was for the best game ever made that I absolutely have. However, this is a project that’s “pricey” by Kickstarter standards, I am not sure I like the genre anymore, and I have middling memories of from when I was young. Those memories being that it seemed really cool, but it was way too hard. I probably didn’t understand what I was doing and just ran my agents in to their deaths over and over or something.

Kickstarters work better in dollars.
If you’re doing a Kickstarter in Sterling, backers must provide credit card details to Kickstarter. In dollars, they can just use their Amazon account that they’ve already set up previously.
It’s an added step that will put some off.

As a US-ian, my perspective has just been that the games I’ve wanted to back that have been in British currency have asked more than I felt I wanted to part with for a preorder- the exchange rate just makes it more difficult on my budget. I’ve considered You Sir, Prison Architect, and this… but $25-30 bucks each for a speculative pre-order is a bit much. I think the only ‘international’ game I’ve backed was Maia- and that was because it was so close to not reaching the fundraising goal. These other projects have been strong enough that I’ve felt confident I’ll be able to get my hands on them later for a price that my budget is better prepared to handle.

Precisely. On the Steam sale I could buy Bioshock Infinite for very close to that price right now. A game that has been released, reviewed, and discussed. It exists and I have a pretty good idea what’s going on with it. But paying that much to fund a game that will hopefully exist in the future? A pre-order on an unknown property combined with a bit of charity in bringing something about that I’d quite like to own? Well… maybe some people have that sort of money, but I do not.
Kickstarters are more successful when you make the “get the game” tier rather low. You’re not selling out the future of your game, you’re encouraging people to give you money to fund the game and in return for taking a risk on it you’re giving them a very low price. Not just a pre-order for $5-10 dollars off.
Steam sales have shown well that when you go for lower prices the volume increases enough to vastly make up the difference. When you have something on Kickstarter this is even more important. Otherwise you’re just going after the die-hard fans and people with money to burn.

This constant coercion to fund Satellite Reign is beginning to feel like high school peer pressure all over again. Well, I’m wearing my purple nail polish and eyeliner and there’s nothing I say, nothing you can do about it.

The team is in Australia though, and 350,000 pounds converts to about 580,000 aussie dollars. Plus also the Australian government likes to help fund independent game studios in the country, so maybe some help there too

Hmmm…….While they do have a nice kickstarter page with good updates, I do think this kind of game could have really benefited from some early prototype/pre-alpha video of actual gameplay. This in engine stuff that might as well be a cut scene, doesn’t really cut it. Especially for someone like me, who only played Syndicate as a child and thus doesn’t really have the nostalgia factor to go back to.
Right now, I recognize that there is potential for a good game, but not enough to make me part with my money. Especially without seeing how the “Real Time” tactical combat is going to play out (is it pauseable by any chance?). And no, going back to videos of a game from the mid-nineties is not going to give me a good idea of what to expect.
Having said that, I do believe that this game stands a good chance of being funded. I only think it could have done much better.

They make the point that they don’t have any gameplay yet because they first need the money this kickstarter is supposed to give them. If they already had gameplay, there’d be little need for the kickstarter. See the Kickstarter update about this video for more information.

Agreed, it does look very good.. it’s strange how some games should absolutely be runaway successes, but for some reason fail abysmally.
This is the kind of thing I would have backed, but I don’t use kickstarter anymore, I’m thoroughly sick of all the crap involved now..the double dipping, the poor scheduling, and then it usually just goes to a publisher anyway. Kickstarter was supposed to enable us to remove the publisher from the picture, but it’s being abused by the devs now and I refuse to fund just so a publisher can get a free game to sell.

I agree that it looks really good. I am also painfully aware (the pain of spending regret) that looking good is in no way sufficient to make a good game. It is also not particularly necessary to make a good game (though it helps in getting people’s attention).
I’m especially wary in this case because of the term “gameplay visualisation”, which sounds weasely to me. From what I can see, the video isn’t even suggestive of any gameplay besides having units that can move around.
There may be more to this project, but neither the post nor the video gives any evidence of it.

They kinda pitched it in exactly the wrong spot. Not close enough to Syndicate to be Syndicate and not far enough away to be its own thing.
It’ll still limp over the line, because once you get that close why wouldn’t you just find the rest of the money yourself. I know you aren’t supposed to, but how hard can that be to get around.

For me personally, as much as I enjoyed the original Syndicate and Syndicate Wars at the time, there’s not enough about this project that convinces me the people behind it will actually make a good game in 2013/14. I really hope they do, and if they do I’ll be happy to buy it when it’s released, but until then I don’t feel like backing the project. I backed the Torment and Project Eternity kickstarters because as well as loving the idea and the previous work of the people involved, I’m confident that they’re able to make them into great modern games.

It’s weird because we are thinking the same thing, but we’ve both come to different conclusions. I liked the original syndicate games, but I’m not so rigidly married to them that I can’t see room for differences. I really like how they’ve used Syndicate as a jumping off point for something different. It sounds deeper than Syndicate ever was.

This looks extremely awesome! Syndicate is one of my favorite old-school (non RPG) games out there so I’ll be sure to fund this baby once I get paid. Here’s hoping that the ‘oldschool RPG’ hype on Kickstarter will turn into a isometric tactical hype instead. Moar X-Com, Syndicate, Jagged Alliance, Silent Storm!
