Pussy Galore: A Mew Genics Trailer

By Craig Pearson on September 2nd, 2013 at 12:00 pm.

The biggest tragedy of my life is that I had to move into a building with a ‘no pets’ policy, which is an odd policy given that the landlord has let out flats to obvious criminals and a scary family with about seven angry people squashed into each room. But a purring furball? How dare I even contemplate such a thing! So I had to breed an invisible cat, which wasn’t too much trouble in the beginning. But I’ve not seen him for weeks and the house is starting to smell, so I’m beginning to worry. I got the idea of breeding cats, mutating them into genetic super cats, from Team Meat’s next game Mew Genics. A Crazy Cat Lady sim that allows you to breed ridiculous kitties, finding attributes you want to enhance and trying to balance out other problems. There’s a remarkable trailer below.

The trailer describes the breeding process: you take a cat and rub it on a cat and the cat gets all fat and then another cat comes out of its butt. That’s what I tried to do with Lucy and Dexter, but instead of creating a bounding furball that looked like Dex and had the energy of Lucy, all I got was scratched. Where did I go wrong?

I’m still wandering around and staring at the game from odd angles, attempting to figure out what it is you do with the cats. There’s talk of pageants, and this blog post about kittens turning into cats mentions HP, but there’s nothing conclusive. I can’t wait to find out, though.

What…? How…? Why? I’m at a loss of words. That trailer.

I could be wrong about this – and believe me when I say that I’d like to be wrong about this – but has McMillen simply made the game his cat-crazy girlfriend wanted him to make here?

Cos if we’re starting a cats vs dogs argument – he’s lost already…

What do you mean what do you do with the cats? It’s clear from the trailer!

    Rub dem cats together.

It worries me how excited I am to play this game.

    I don’t even like cats.

I like to think that RPS chose the right man for the job in writing about a game with a pun title.

Love the music. Very Tom Waits.

The 2014 at the end of that trailer makes me a little sad.

Ah, the swan song by the wonderful, late Captain Beefheart.

Also, not enough puppy based posts on RPS. It’s time to rise up.

Finally the truth about feline reproduction!

That ending looked like a cat-astrophe!

Where is the dog mod for this game?

    2014 :(
Oh, wait!, that’s pretty close already!

Could have been worse. You could have created a monster that viciously breaks into podcasts AND reviews the leaf falls in Badger simulations.

An entirely accurate depiction of animal husbandry from Team Meat. I applaud this new edutainment software.

Is this game really in black and white? I’m usually all for devs doing whatever they want, but it seems like an odd choice for a game about breeding. Kind of like making a rhythm game with no music.

I figure it will make the game much easier to keep a consistent aesthetic, as opposed to if you let the cats be coming out in all manner of colours in addition to the myriad other genetic variations.

I had a cat pet once. I probably sould write that with lots of quotes, “had” and “pet”. It was a animal living in the same house at me, but at no moment I had the feel It was a ped, much less that we “had” it. It was more like the animal was trapped inside the house. So I don’t get pets :(
Internet Cats are a different things, cats are photogenic and crazy, and do all sorts of things that make them great for the Internet.

Maybe this game will help me enter the psyche of cats.

    Dexter is very Lenin.
