Additional Arma 3: Episode 2 Is Out In January

For a while, I was a proponent of Bohemia releasing an Arma game that was just a platform for the fans to build upon, and it almost happened with Arma 3: they released the game with a few showcases and Steam Workshop integration, but held the campaign back to work on it post-release. Except doing that made me realise that it does feel incomplete without something official to ease into. Survive, the first episode of the campaign, turned out to be a cracking few hours of island-based action. It reminded me that Arma’s sandbox could easily be used to create a tightly controlled story, as opposed to the sandboxy mods usually install. I’m excited to hear that the second part, dubbed Adapt, will be arriving on January 21st.

It’s a bit later than I’d hoped: it’s my birthday one week before and it would have been a lovely present. Adapt will apparently be more of a sandbox than Survive’s surprisingly linear trudge, and will be the midpoint of the story of the player escaping the overrun island of Stratis.

Before that update lands, Bohemia will be seeding the game with the the episode’s assets, enabling players to mess about with new vehicles and weapons in the sandbox. On December 11th, you’ll have a Wy-55 Hellcat helicopter, a tracked Infantry Fighting Vehicle, and a MBT-52 tank, a well as few more weapons and skins. If it’s the tank in the screenshots, it has some sexy camo.

And just today they released Arma 1 and 2 (with DLCs) MLODs for modders to put their teeth on. And thats not even the big annoucment promissed for this week!

    On other news:
PlayWithSix ingame mission uploading is closing in, similar to Steam Workshop. Mods will follow later.

JSRS 2.0 (soundmod; if you run the game without soundmos you are not playing right) will be released on Dec 15th.

Tactical Battlefield mod\gamode will be released tomorrow as the "main thing" for PvP, at least for now. If you played Project Reality for A2, this is it, Check it out, it is awesome!

Another very promising sound mod is the "Advanced Combat Sound Environment" from the ACE guys. Just watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKwTEDj4jh8

    Awe… I was hoping it’d be in December….

Oh well, KSP 0.23 is coming in December, I hope.

Hopefully, part 2 of the campaign will not involve mortars in any way, as the first part proved that Bohemia’s implementation of them is terrible.

    • Dominic White says:

Apparently the mortar problems stemmed from them switching the type of launcher used just as the first campaign section was rolling out, meaning that it was far less accurate than what they actually tested the mission with.

They apparently patched the old computer-targeted mortars back into that mission, so you can be relatively sure your guys are firing in the right direction.

        Gap Gen says:

Either way, it barely mattered for that mission as storming the base isn’t too hard. Defending the chopper in the woods with zero standoff distance, on the other hand…

True, it wasn’t too hard to just storm the place, but I wanted to blow up guard towers with mortars, dammit!

What IS the point of mosaic camouflage? Is is so they can disguise themselves from satellites with low-resolution cameras?

“the design technique actually has three purposes: (1) to add high spatial frequency texture components that add concealment at closer ranges, (2) to modify visual processing of edges, and (3) to produce intermediate colours by a dithering effect.

“Digitizing” a pattern does not of itself improve performance; the design process is actually more complex, and involves color and contrast as well as overall disruptive effect of specific pattern geometry. A failure to consider all elements of pattern design tends to result in poor results. ”

      SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER:

It’s the attack on the radar base, which I think *might* be an optional mission.

        lol ..just read above too.

I did play it after all …….was as wonky as firing a 2″ mortar in TA back in 80s :D

I guess a little ranging fire never hurt anyone. Well, unless you got lucky first time, I suppose.

      Big announcement revealed: http://makearmanotwar.com/

Half a million Euros in prizes!

      • L3TUC3 says:

This is one of the most baffling things BIS has come up with yet. It’s also missing the category of “New Island” excluding the map makers from entering. Not surprising considering the mod tools don’t include the map making stuff yet, but it must be grating for the skilled map makers in the community.

I also dislike the contest turning into a public vote in the final round. FOTM game mode will just win it by popularity alone or a good internet ballot stuffing. I’d prefer a jury examination of all mods to the end.

Don’t expect anyone to release anything WIP that’s interesting for at least a year now, nor that anyone will share their creations for other mods.

I truly wish bis put that money towards improving the base game so more modders would be more interested in applying their efforts towards Arma in the first place. A lot of community members are still waiting for BIS to bring their game to the original planned release state.

    • dwpenney says:

Check out the ALiVE module as well: http://alivemod.com/

  7. Artist says:

I start to believe that BIS actually did a pretty clever move by keeping the campaign back. Now they have a handful of option to get covered by the press over and over again with each tiny bit of their campaign released. Pretty much what Mojang is currently doing with Minecraft: Instead of patching releasing updates with questionable content quality, but every media outlet reports about them again and again.
    Clever?!

    • L3TUC3 says:

They know how to market it right. The downside is that the team is still working on pretty much every aspect of the campaign while not really making much progress with ironing out technical flaws within the aging engine.

Really, they’re just continuing regular development of the game after release. Everybody forgets that this content was supposed to be included in the first place.

  8. Silent_Thunder says:

So is that the launch date for the “real” branch or the beta branch? Hoping the first one, so I can access it that much sooner. Last time was around a week or two earlier on the dev branch.

  9. lucasdigital says:

I held back playing part one of the campaign with the plan of playing through the whole thing as a Christmas treat – they did say it would all be over by Christmas, right? I might as well dip in and play through the first part.

So, Wy U NO MAKE NEW MEME?
