RymdResa Is A Procedural “Space Poetry Adventure”

By Graham Smith on January 13th, 2014 at 7:00 pm.

Not to scale, I hope.

Finally! A space game whose title doesn’t start with the word “Star”. RymdResa is a “procedurally generated poetic space odyssey” made by two-person Swedish indie team Morgondag. It’s a space exploration game without combat, where “solitude of space” is listed as one of the features. It’s up on Steam Greenlight and there’s an initially-ponderous-but-eventually-interesting trailer below.

So you fly around a generated galaxy, finding loot with which to upgrade your ship, playing through “over a hundred text-based quests” to learn about the fate of the galaxy, and occasionally encountering poetic voice acting by (the jazz musician or some guy called) Eric Reed. And all the artwork looks like it’s being displayed on an old, fuzzy CRT monitor. In fact, it’s possible I’m just a sucker for cohesive art design. Look at this lovely animated logo:

Coo. Check out the game’s Greenlight page for more videos and info.

“where “solitude of space” is listed as one of the features.”

But I already have Space Engine.

  2. Sleepymatt says:

To be fair, “Space Voyage” is hardly the most original of names, whether it begins with ‘Star’ or not!

    • Gap Gen says:

Yes, calling your game “space” in another language is cheating!

    • Fanbuoy says:

Shh! The code must not be cracked! That will totally ruin the mystical appeal of my upcoming game Rälsskjutare!

    • Subject 706 says:

At least it isn’t a generisk förstapersonsskjutare!

  3. CookPassBabtridge says:

But .. will there be Ero Content?

  4. Kefren says:

Lovely music. The ship upgrade bit made me think of Megatraveller (Amiga – I’m amazed that it is one of the games I eventually completed).

  5. Syra says:

Is it the same guys who made rymdcapsl?

    • VelvetFistIronGlove says:

No. Just like Space Giraffe is not made by the same people as Space Station 13, but just shares the word “Space”.

      • dE says:

One could be forgiven for thinking that though. If you don’t know it’s a word in a foreign language, it might just be a general brand name.

        • VelvetFistIronGlove says:

          Oh, for sure.

I only knew that it wasn’t the same team—and so I plugged Rymdresa and Rymdkapsel into google translate to find out why they were similar, so I could make a not very good joke :)

      • Syra says:

Alright then, it just fit the same description, small swedish indie team with rymd going on…. does that mean space or star then?

Yes-voted, followed, favorited and all that.

  8. Cooper says:

    *Coherent art design

    • SuddenSight says:

They mean the same thing. Cohesive, when applied to art designs, means unified, sticking together. Coherent means working towards the same goal.

  9. The Random One says:

Hm. I was expecting some sort of infinite Lucid, so contemplative Asteroids ended up not meeting my expectations.

Damn, maybe I should buckle up and make an infinite Lucid.

  10. stoner says:

Procedural space game? Nah. I’ll pass.

I’m waiting for Limit Theory, a true procedural space sim.

  11. Duke Flipside says:

I was sold on this the second I saw “+200 spacepoints” as a quest reward.

  12. Monkeh says:

The art-style looks great, but IMO they should always have a bunch of ‘stars’ in the background (like they do in the logo), instead of having it look completely empty a lot of the time.

  13. Stardreamer says:

Ok. It has a certain artsy-fartsy charm but MAN I get frustrated by the claustrophobic viewpoint of these 2D space games.
