LoLoLoL: Gag Mode Comes To League Of Legends

If you think a joke’s funny, commit to it. Run straight into that wall, tell every excruciating detail of that embarrassing story, and laugh uproariously in that child’s face. Every year on April 1, officially the most hilarious of days, disappointingly few April Fools’ jokes go beyond a little work in Photoshop and a press release of top bants. League of Legends has committed to the joke.

Riot Games today actually properly released a new ‘Ultra Rapid Fire’ mode, supposedly as a preview of an upcoming balance patch. Playable for the next week, it cuts ability costs and cooldowns to turn LoL into a ridiculous mess of silliness.

URF mode (its name a callback to LoL’s long-running April Fools’ gag) removes all ability costs, cuts cooldowns by 80%, doubles attack speed bonuses for ranged heroes and boosts their critical damage, makes everyone move faster, and fills everyone’s pockets with plenty of gold, the patch notes explain. Broadly speaking, it makes everyone extremely murderous.

“These changes focus on punching up what we believe are the best experiences in League of Legends,” Riot joke in a trailer, saying they’ll roll them out permanently for the next season. But URF is really real for now, and you’ll be able to play the mode for the next week. That’s commitment.

    rito pls

  2. LionsPhil says:

Didn’t one of the FP2 WW2-ish combat flight sims do a whole pony faction last year? That was seriously putting a ton of effort in; new assets and everything.

    • Natti says:

That was Gaijin Entertainment’s War Thunder. They were MLP ponies with jets, cannons, rockets and bombs strapped on. It was pretty entertaining.

      • 0positivo says:

And this year there’s a Giant Enemy Snail gamemode called Gaijira (a joke on the dev name and symbol, being a snail)

  3. Lord Custard Smingleigh says:

    I predict Garen spinning constantly.

    • RedViv says:

My first experience was approaching the shrubbery top to ward it, and finding Nidalee and Garen sat in there instead. Spear cannon and constant twirl of death are not nice. Not. Nice.

    • Iliya Moroumetz says:

He, Katarina, Darius, and Wu-Kong are all going to be throwing up with how much they’re gonna spin. That’s for sure.

  4. Awesumo says:

    Lol Tryndamere – can’t die temporarily… 80% cooldown reduction… trololol

  5. Fenix says:

Um, this is basically the old wtf mod from Warcraft III DotA..

    • Nevard says:

It exists in dota 2 too, but not as a gamemode you can queue for.
They did run a gag tournament of it once though! If I remember correctly strategy mostly revolved around using Sniper to spam shrapnel and kill towers in four seconds.

    • Zankmam says:

Exactly? It’s what the playerbase has wanted for years now.

  6. Frank says:

Wow: “We tweaked some numbers… to the extreme! Funny, right? Get it? The game isn’t balanced well now, see. We even removed a playable character from the roster. WHOA, right?” Kudos for commitment and implementation, but this sounds like the gag the lamest accountant in the office would come up with.

    • Philomelle says:

I laughed out loud at the “we removed Kassadin” part. With him having gone from being a 97% ban rate in ranked play to a joke character in one patch, removing him from the game completely would do wonders to his dignity.

  7. Rao Dao Zao says:

I remember when Blizzard put so much effort into their April Fools gags that they ended up just adding them to the game.

    • RedViv says:

Yeah, fairly certain the current “oh look how funny non-conventional not-sexy female character designs are, hahaha!” one for WoW will very certainly not be something they put in the game.

      • Philomelle says:

Between that article and the “look how this female character is just a worthless footnote in a male character’s backstory who exists only to die violently” joke repeated thrice in a row over at the Outcasts page, Blizzard exhausted an extraordinary number of good points in a single day for me.

        • Stupoider says:

Are you talking about Mankrik’s wife? Mankrik’s been a running joke for years. Bore off.

          • Philomelle says:

Okay, so let’s not count Olgra. That still leaves us with two characters who are treated like their entire worth was dying to provide a male character with a motivator, seated right next to each other. How is that supposed to make me comfortable, again?

  8. Iliya Moroumetz says:

STUNLOCK POPPY! WOOOO! Let’s see you get away now, Ezreal!!!

    • Jockie says:

Ezreal is basically invincible in this mode due to his e (arcane Shift) having a 2 second cooldown (unless you’re hecarim, who is now an unstoppable monster)

      • Xocrates says:

Yeah, I’ve laned against ezreal and morgana. Fun fact: morgana’s black shield duration is actually longer that it’s cooldown. Suffice to say, that lane went poorly.
(I was with leona btw, which is kind of amazing as well)

  9. witzkawumme (wkw) says:

shouldn’t that video be fun to watch?

  10. Faxmachinen says:

Oh FFS, don’t spoil it! I didn’t even realize it was April 1st today :(

  11. zbeeblebrox says:

I guess even joking about adding more than just the single level is too much effort, eh? Must be nice to work for Riot. Every other developer struggles to make dozens of unique levels and environments for their game, Riot just builds new character models and tweaks numbers :p

    • DatonKallandor says:

“Every” other developer? I’ll go tell Valve that. League has 4 times the amount of maps DotA 2 has by the way.

  12. TechnicalBen says:

Funny is not as funny as it could have been. 800% cooldown would have had effects even non-players could see as funny. This just looks slightly faster gameplay to someone watching from the outside.
