Mod A Mod: Dota 2 Mod Tools Released

Even without official mod tools, Dota 2 players have been making all sorts of Warcraft 3-y custom modes and games for Valve’s game (which is, of course, the sequel to a WC3 mod). Some recreate old classics like Pudge Wars, Enfo’s Survival, or Element Tower Defense, while others are new short weird things. But they’re a pain in the rump to make and to play, unofficial hacky things. Good-o, then, that Valve have now released mod tools.

They tools are very early right now, but the idea is that people will be able to simply download custom modes from the Steam Workshop.

Valve dropped the alpha release of Dota 2’s Workshop Tools last night. They say:

“This is a developer focused release and currently has high system requirements, but soon everyone will be able to play. While this is still an early release with some instability, we believe it is important to give the community access to these tools as soon as possible …

“These tools are for you and we’re looking forward to seeing where the community takes us in developing content for the expanding Dota universe.”

Right now they require a zippy PC with a 64-bit version of Windows and a Direct3D 11 GPU, but they’ll mellow with age and become less demanding. The Dota 2 dev wiki has more info.

I would be delighted to see a bit of the weird and wonderful WC3 mod community spirit come over to Dota 2, especially as being free-to-play means everyone will get to play these creations.

    Are there any map mods for Dota 2? Sure, the game has been balanced with 3 lanes in mind, but none’s going to convince me that replanting a few bushes here and there, placing some creeps in different spots or things like changing the boring “forsest” tilest to, say, a “desert” one (with cacti instead of trees) would *break* the balance (riiiiiight). Some variety, even solely in terms of visuals is needed. This game absolutely CAN be played on new maps instead of the default one.

      Considering that these map tools were just released today, not sure why you’re expecting new maps much less mods to be done at this moment. Chill son.

      Despite what the other guy said Dota 2 already has custom maps and mods. Pudge Wars, Hero Line Wars, a thing called “Fight of Flight” and other mods are already available and were built without Valve’s tools.

    Word on the street is that this was actually Valve sneakily putting the actual Source 2 engine out under the cover of daylight. Hence the high minimum specs. A pretty, pretty big deal.

    So for once, this is some Dota 2 news that even Dota 2 grumps can get hyped about.

    Right when HoN is holding it’s $10k mapping contest.

    What’s gonna matter the most though is which platform is gonna make it the easiest for the players to host and play their custom maps and the visibility there-off.

    The Prophets map (war3 warlocks) for example, was made part of the matchmaking. So good visibility there.

    But there’s no official means of hosting a dedicated server for the development phase.

    Of the TD maps my favorite was TTW (Tropical Tower Wars). Tons of different teams to pick from and an emphasis on teamwork.

    So for TD maps, I assume creators would need to make all the towers from scratch?

      If I were to make a TD, I’d probably call it Ward Defense.
      If one could use the user workshop items, then there’s more than enough resources available.

      That’s like Inception levels of ridiculous complexity. A game makes a mod. The mod makes a game. The mod-game makes a mod of the game that spawned the mod. Infinite recursion occurs. The universe may end.

      Although, Warcraft in Source 2 would be the dream, I admit :)

      There is a lot of recreation mods in Starcraft 2 Arcade that you can play right now for free.

      There is a complete Starcraft 1 campaign remake. There is also a Warcraft RTS mod.

      It will just look silly in Dota 2 since they use completely different models and creatures for all the heroes. I guess you could use the Dota 2 model and put in the War3 hero skills. I doubt Blizzard will play nice if a bunch of Hellscream, Illidan, Arthas models start popping up.
