i havent played TD1 but i heard enough about it to feel like this game was extremely hurt by that, not porting it to PC before release was a pretty bad idea, im sure i could care a lot more about the characters had i played it.

That said, i liked most of the non fighting scenes but they almost always went for a bit too long.

The asylum in particular was the most annoying of them, while its well presented, its done in a way that might work great with movies or visual novels but this is a game and they offered almost nothing in the way of gameplay or exploration, after the second time i just wanted to skip them and keep playing the "game" parts

the game scripting is also pretty noticeable in some parts, at one point i walked into a room, lets see, lots of bullet proof lights turned off, no generator on sight, no alternative path, here is where i get captured(thx trailer for spoiling that btw), i walk forward and boom, "haha we got you, stupid, wahahahah!"

and there was also this awesome moment at the beginning when my darkling pulled a dude out of his cover giving me a clear shot that made me think for a second the AI was awesome but sadly never repeated again leading me to think it was just a one-off scripted event

D&D spells might be wonderful, but you are sure right that many D&D games don't make the system transparent to the player. Obscure names and descriptions don't help... you need to keep the manual on your desk at all times to look up exactly what "colorful hands" or whatever it is actually does, and who it affects, and is it ranged or not? and who is immune? etc.. Which doesn't work with digital downloads where the manual is a PDF.

The main reason i stopped playing BG2 was that it starts you with a load of high level characters, each with 6 levels of spells and priest spells, and then throws you into combat expecting you to know which to choose and how these will all interact. So i decided to go back and start with BG1 mainly to learn the spells... but even there the names and references are hardly clear, and it's mostly blind luck or repeating the same spells.

(well, actually, I've mostly given up on spells and it's just hitting things while pincushioning them with arrows... even the lots of potions don't seem particularly clear or useful, so i only really use the health ones. But then again, I'm only fighting hobgoblins at this point. )

It's really hard to make an FPS that isn't fun. Even basic crappy FPS games are usually pretty fun at times, especially if played with others. The problem is that there's lots of FPS... so being "not un-fun" doesn't help you get ahead.

You don't have to have steam running if you bought GCI there.
I tried and it runs without Steam.
And it doesn't need Origin either (unless you bought it there i guess)
I'm enjoying GCI, but the matchmaking really needs fixing.
