View Full Version : If you had to be like Wizardry, what game would you name yourself?

Berzee

Continuing the time-honored RPS practice of obsessing over the individual known as Wizardry, I thought of a good question. If you had to choose a game from the past with which to name yourself and introduce into many discussions as a good example of Things Done Properly, what game would you pick?

I would probably pick Asheron's Call and bring it up during any MMO-related conversations! I would talk about how lovely it was that it introduce a world where combat was possible and items with unique properties existing, and didn't really worry about setting too many "rules" beyond that. Everything was really freeform and you felt like you really had to learn about the world (especially if you avoided knowledgebase sites), and that you might scratch out a living almost anywhere instead of being confined to one or two level-appropriate zones. Also, portal storms! Best lag-handling measure ever.

Howzabout you? What will your new name-that-is-a-game be?

Prince of Persia. Mainly because then I could feel all self important and lord it over all you other common peasant games :P

Deus Ex would be a terrible user name and Homeworld too, so I'd probably pick Morrowind.

For the "one game to rule them all" it would have to be :
Slaves to Armok: God of Blood Chapter II: Dwarf Fortress
but that would be a terrible name.

The best forum name from a game I could come up with so far was either Foot-to-ball Manager or Supreme Commander.

I think that if I can bend the rules slightly it would be Torin the Chosen: Master of Magic. That works on all counts: he's the most powerful hero from a great game; it has the obligatory subtitle; and it's splendidly grandiose.

Ah, many's the night I spent in my youth incarnating Torin the Chosen; and no, that's not a wanking euphemism.

Quake 3, and I'd bring it up any time discussion turned to multiplayer FPS games. Also, I'd find a way of arguing that games without rocket-launchers and adjustable FOV and flawless mouse control were actually not FPSs at all.

The secondary unit should be online soon. We will monitor its progress and continue to report. But it won't be as good as the primary unit because old is good and new is bad. I don't see how you can even call it a nano-augmented super-soldier. Real nano-augmented super-soldiers don't wear sunglasses on a night operation.

Sadly no, though right now they're unveiling a new selection of EA games (Wing Commander 1+2 just went up the other day, which I've still never played) so there's a chance it could be coming shortly. Apparently EA still own the rights, so I'm hopeful.

I actually found my old Syndicate Plus CD a couple of months back and sank way too much time into the game - so it obviously still stands strong 15 years later.

Alright you can't just say random collections of words that are names of games, it has to be something that would work, surely. It has to be a name or name-like thing. So Defcon would work but anything with a subtitle wouldn't. Also: sequels can't count. You need the potential, just the potential, that if someone looked at your name they wouldn't be 100% sure if it was named after the game, and that's when you hit them multiply with the fact that yes: it is about the game. Everything is.

So I choose, uh, actually Thief would work but I never played that properly. Hm.

Hmm, that is essential. The first few times I came across Wizardry, I couldn't tell if it had something to do with the computer game or whether he was in fact the spawn of some arcane ritual.

Necroing this

I'd probably either have to go for (bad name) 'x-com: apocalypse', (bad name) 'Bloodlines' or (good name) 'dungeon keeper'. As games that just got it right there's none better.*

*I know it was a bloody mess on release and that the last hour sucks but it was _trying_ to get it right.

Heliocentric
20-11-2011, 12:21 PM
I sort of did do that when I changed my handle to helios after playing deus ex, later heliocentric after my homeworld in tdzk (it was a strategic space mud).

But if I was to name myself straight after a game? Settlers, that's probably the most honest, that game laid out many of my expectations for gaming, non scripted strategy with coop, competitive multiplayer and competent AI, beautiful art, hundreds of tiny corpses, logistics and *terrain*.

Baring that, I'd go Sam&Max. It did what it did best, among the first, and hasn't been done as good since. I'd bring it up every single time humor was mentioned in gaming forums. I'd make scripts that automatically search thousands of sites just to necro threads and interject this opinion.

SWAT 4, probably. Perfect middle ground between all-action (Rainbow Six Vegas) and way too fussy (Rainbow Six). Tense as fuck. Excellent, immersive combat. Lots of options. Replay value. Mission maker. Pepper spraying anyone who gives you any nonsense. An excellent, intuitive, and non-intrusive tactical command interface (Arma 3 please take note).

I don't really have a favourite game, but that's the first game that comes to mind when I think of "how to do it properly".
