My AG 6 dark elf blitzer levelled in my game against P. Weasel last night. He's got block, dodge and 2 +AGs. ... He's pretty much become a thrower, since he long bombs on a 2+ ...


Bit late, but I just stumbled upon this after clicking view all posts rather than PM with my ham-fisted mouse skills. As it is a pretty huge error and no one else has picked up on it I guess it must be a common knowledge gap in our community. AG6 has no value on a thrower. AG5 is as good as it gets. With no other passing skills an AG6 player will fumble a long bomb 50% of the time, needing 4+ rather than 2+

Here is the rule you are forgetting: unlike other agility rolls when passing a modified one is treated the same as a natural one. As a dedicated bomber an AG4 runner with accurate will already be as good and can add pass to mitigate all those rerolls you’ll be using :)

So bottom line Snoozer after taking the second AG making him a thrower is a waste. If you want him involved in a passing game he’d do better as a receiver, especially with that speed. With a two skill runner already being a better bomber that change would vastly improve the efficiency of your passing game; AG6 is great on a receiver in heavy traffic basically being a slightly watered down all-in-one version of stunty, nerves of steel and big hand.

To bomb with any reliability you need to invest in throwing skills. Accurate and strong arm will be required to get him down to 2+

Thanks for this bit of wisdom, Zor. I think on that basis his next non-doubles skill will probably be sure hands, since he is often in the position of picking up balls in multiple tacklezones.

I take the point about him being a receiver. Problem is, I doubt he would last long, exposed in the oppositions half. He has "Please blitz me" written in big neon letters above his head.

It's really just for the new folks. If we see someone we recognise from the forums or the Divisions, then we already know they're an RPS person and not a random (although, to be fair, some of us RPS people are pretty random).

Since you are trying to level up your guys for the RPS Open I can understand why you'd prefer them. Hey sketchseven, glad to see you around. There is no race limit in the Challenge League, apart from that just have a look at the first post to see the guidelines.

If you'd like to join the RPS Open (the RPS league with a set amount of scheduled matches) or the RPS Divisions of Death (the other RPS league with shorter cycles - check the link in my signature) there will be some restrictions on races though. All of the rules and specifics of each league are usually explained in the first post of the corresponding threat.

In case anything remains unclear, just go ahead and ask.

I'd suggest porting your challenge league team over to the open when you enter.

Unlike the Divisions the open is not segmented into different brackets, so you'll be facing TV1700+ teams right away. Doing this with a fresh team is going to be difficult, so if you can skill a team in the challenge league a bit first you will be more competitive in the Open.

You can still enter the open with a new team, but you'll need to make good use of inducements (and some sacrifices to Nuffle couldn't hurt).

The challenge league is pretty free form. You can have as many teams and whatever kind of teams you like. You can play whenever you like.

The Divs and Open are a more structured regular tourny format with team requirements and a play schedule.

That's some nice elfball! How was your starting roster composed? I'm always curious about elf roster setups.

I usually focus on players first, so I went with the full load on everything apart from catchers, where I only had two instead of the max four, and I think I had one sub lineman (plus three cheerleaders, because they're h0t). The downside means that I couldn't afford any re-rolls or an apothecary/euthanaist, but I got one of the latter with my winnings.

I think each of the TDs involved a pass, if I remember rightly, so the throwers and catchers are vital (I also levelled up both catchers: +str on one and +ma on the other). The treeman was also vital for tying up the centre. The wardancers didn't do as much in this match, but you can't say no to blodge out of the box on a player that first (and, again, h0t).

Anyway, this is the first time I've played WElfs since I started out with BB with the SP story mode, and it feels great to be back in the saddle. I'm enjoying playing gobbos too, but they're hard work in comparison!

Well, with pass, catch and dodge for the key players, you've got a lot of the re-rolls covered anyway.

With Elves, your linemen are also key-players. Agi 4 means a lone lineelf uncovered (or even covered by 1 TZ) means they're a veritable risk for the opponent. They will eat up your TRRs though.

Starting with 0 TRRs seems brave, but I usually focus a lot on my linepeople unless playing Gobos.

Also another difference between the elf teams I guess. Dark Elf teams lack Pass and Catch, while High and Pro lack Dodge completely. Meanwhile the Wood Elf side has all those skills and a lot more Dodge than anyone else too. I suspect zero TRRs probably wouldn't work out so well for any other elf side.

I generally agree with VV though - TRRs will turn any elf on the squad into a goal scorer.

Well, yes, the downside to all those skills is that the players are expensive, and putting together a full roster from the get go leaves no funds for anything else. However, having the full roster means you can punish your opponent for even the smallest mistake, which is what gave me that scoreline against PresterJohn. To be fair, Nuffle was more on my side than his, but it would have been a victory anyway I think.

My experience playing gobbos so far, at least whilst they're unskilled, is that luck plays a massive part, and then it's a lot of scrabbling around trying to pick up the pieces. With WElfs, you've got your playbook sorted pretty much from the start.

Two matches it was, and quite fun matches too.

The first one was a Woodelf on Woodelf massacre that ended victorious for me in touchdowns and casualties despite having 130k inducements. The sanguine Crimson Carnival was continuing my Woodelf-team-tradition of badly hurting whatever was in the way.

The second match was supposed to be a rematch, but I blame Cyanide for messing it up and sending my brawly Amazons against the slightly battered but levelled woodelves. It was a tight match with plenty of KOs and a death on either side, ending with a turn 16 draw that did require a reroll for picking up the ball with one of my blitzers.

Tight matches and very fun.

Cheers to Prester John and VV for the games yesterday. I had a great time using orcs for the first time in freaking ages. It is so nice to have a team that can afford players of all positions at the start (unlike my Dark Elves) and has positional players at all (unlike my Goblins).

My starting orc line-up was 3 black orcs, 2 blitzers, 2 throwers, 2 gobbos, 3 linemen and the troll, less punchy than orcs can be but still with enough ST in their ranks and the versatility on offer is fab. Looking forward to using them again in the near future! (And yes, this is going to be my Pro-focussed team - already got a Pro blitzer!)

Also cheers to Jiim for a saturday night game that saw my rookie Chaos thoroughly outskilled by his scary Dark Elf side. It showed me just how far I've yet to go with them... Chaos is so slow to level :(

In their third confrontation, my Orcwurkz and Prester John's human team, Daisy's Dominators, finally achieved a meaningful result! After two stubborn draws, their third game ended with a 2-0 victory to the orcs!

Just like Joe vs Punk.

It was a surprisingly bloodless game with no casualties on either side.

The decisive moment came after the orcs kicked to the humans, following up their kick by punching a hole in the LoS and running upfield to harass the thrower. All seemed lost when the thrower broke free and chucked a long pass to a marked catcher within walking distance of the orc end zone.

By a stroke of purest nuffle, the catcher flubbed his only required dodge roll. Then on the next turn, the orc thrower recovered the stray ball and passed it back up the pitch into the unmarked arms of my second TD scorer, who shortly went on to do exactly that.

My Chaos played Snoozer's highly advanced Ogres last night, and I had nearly 500k of inducements to play with. So I hired Lord Borak and a merc Beastman with Dirty Player, as well as an extra Apothecary.

Snoozer scored early in the first half, giving me 5 turns to respond. Unfortunately despite having some awesome block rolls I couldn't score - on turn 7 I broke out of the scrum with a ball carrier and two beastdudes in support and that was still not enough to stop an ogre blitzer knocking the ball out of my grasp.

In the second half I set up to receive but my blocking zen had left me, a few turns of pushing snots around and a couple of failed Wild Animal rolls slowed me down and the swarm of snots and ogres were upon me, bogging down my drive. It took the rest of the game to try and extricate myself from that scrum and it was only a lucky frenzied blitz (the unintended follow-up was 2D against but rolled double Pow) that cleared the ball and some TZ for me to take a shot. I had one beast unmarked and within walking distance of the line. I only had to pick up the ball and hand it off to him with my now unmarked warrior. But the hand off failed, with the warrior himself catching the rebound.

So the game ended 1-0 to Snoozer's ogres.

On the bright side, my minotaur hit level 3! Unfortunately, it was another non-double roll so my Daisy will be replaced by a rookie mino just as soon as I can afford one.

Also not having access to developed players (well, Icepelt counts I guess) and lots of Frenzy is a tricky thing to deal with against so much muscle. The Block helped though.

Cheers to squirrelfanatic for a game last night. Our connection issues made it drag a little but it was a close, hard-fought game as my half-skilled chaos dudes tried to beat his 4 Guarding human blitzers and his Blocking ogre. In the end the Chaos beat the Human side 2-1, but it came right down to the final turn.

Well, I suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat at the hands of potatoedoughnut last night, despite a ~400 TV advantage. It was still a fun match, if a bit frustrating at times. (Apologies to both squirrelfanatic and Indefatigible Snoozer who popped up for games whilst I was away... I'm not playing those ogres again unless it's with my dwarves though!)

Anyway, this latest defeat is merely the last in a long losing streak. I think I've lost something like 12 games in a row with different teams. I think I've finally figured out the problem though. Unfortunately I'm not around for a match this evening, but I'll find out if I'm right or wrong soon enough, I'm sure!

You had quite a few double 1s it seemed, which didn't help. I would also try and play less bashy with welfs. It worked well our first game (because my delfs never wear armour), but I think the second is more typical of elfs that bash.

Just to be clear, I wasn't complaining about that game itself! I think I was relatively unlucky and would have been happier to limit it to 3-1 rather than 4-1, but it was a fair result and game overall (and I still had fun). I do have a tendency to be bashy with my welfs, which I think comes from a drop in confidence in the agility game (also, being down one catcher early in the game limited my offensive options). However, I've spent a bit of time recently working on probabilities so I'm more confident about that again. I've also done some probability work around passing, which has been interesting.

My losing streak has been with all my teams though, not just welfs. I think the real root of my problems recently has been with defensive set-ups. I've been using a deep defence all the time, for no real reason... I think it was used against me once very successfully and I thought, "aha!" and adopted it without really thinking. Time for a change.
