View Full Version : Games that need an HD remake

Seeing the news about MDK2, what other games would you really like to see an HD remake of?

I'd vote for Heretic 2.

I'm also hoping the Open Outcast project can actually finish (Black Mesa's probably dead, right?)

I don't usually have much problem with old graphics but I'd like a HD thief. I never got to play it and I tried it a few years but it was the only time I was put off by the graphics.

I'd say NOLF (lesser extent NOLF2). Brilliant titles, but sadly the ol' LithTech engine just ain't what she used to be. However, I always worry with HD releases that part of the magic of the original gets lost along the way. It's like when they released Final Fantasy VI for the umpteenth time, they "fixed" the Vanish/Doom exploit from when it was called FF3 on my SNES.

In the same vein as Heretic 2, I'd love to see a HD remake of Hexen. PART ONE. Part two never existed.

Ooooh, and "Blood" + "Blood 2". Such brilliant games.

Another Mod team should get together, make a HD remake/reimagining of Half Life 1, in the Source Engine, and release it. I would probably laugh my socks off if that were to happen.

Oh yes, would love to see them remade. Also Return To Castle Wolfenstein. It's the first FPS I played.

Dare I suggest Dues Ex: Invisible War aswell? Would be good to have the areas joined together without any loading.

(Black Mesa's probably dead, right?)

I keep hoping that Valve will announce that they've taken the Mod team in-house and that it will come as part of HL2:Episode 3.

Outcast and the original Unreal are my picks. The Open Outcast project isn't actually a remake of the first game, it's a fan-made sequel, so a HD version of the original would still be needed/desired.

Regarding Heretic 2, even if they didn't HD it up I'd love for it to actually get a digital release in the first place.

It's still in the early stages, but that's the most promising we've seen so far.
(And I doubt that LucasArts will pay to make an HD version of this title which performed quite poorly, commercially. Unfortunately :/)

But I agree, it would be really great to have a HD remake of this game.

I'd pay good money for a loose Deus Ex remake using the Human Revolution tech, and even more if they'd butcher Invisible War into something worthy one day in the future.

Apart from that, "Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri" would tickle me pink, and the PC Battlezone remake would be "Teh Awesum". (A remake of a remake?)

Killing Cloud. Terminator: Future Shock. Hired Guns. Midwinter. and maybe, just maybe, a remake of Quarantine.

What about improved musical arrangements? Plenty of games (and not just really old titles, either) have great music that would be even better if fully orchestrated. Some examples: Legend of Mana, Master of Orion 2, Rise of Nations, Disciples: Sacred Lands, Sid Meier's Pirates!

I would also like to see a Grim Fandango remake, and in either a cel-shaded or Borderlands sketchy kind of art style. Also, if Windows 8 is going touch-screen oriented and there are so many touch screen PCs available cheaply nowadays, point 'n click adventures could do well with such an interface.

This is a hard one. I've seen some remakes (or even a similar sequel) of older games that I loved at the time just ruin my memories of those games. I can't really think of an example right now, but I do have that memory of being disapointed and a memory dying.
That said, I'd really love a remake of Populous, and also maybe the one with wizards on flying carpets (hmm, wasn't that even named Magic Carpet?). also maybe Ultima Underworld..but I guess they'll screw that up anyway and that might be a game not fitting into this time anymore anyway..

[...] Sid Meier's Pirates!

There was a remake (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/sidpirates/index.html), although I didn't play it and honestly don't want to somehow.

But maybe we need a remake of the remake on this one..as I just loved the original.

I'd say NOLF (lesser extent NOLF2). Brilliant titles, but sadly the ol' LithTech engine just ain't what she used to be.

I replayed it not too long ago and I think the cartoon-y style has helped it hold up a little better than most shooters from that era. It's not lick the screen, super-beautiful, but definitely better than it should for its age.

I'd throw my vote in for a Deux Ex update as well, because that game was ugly even when it came out. Blech!

Also, do UI updates count as HD remakes? Outdated graphics I can deal with, but there are some old RPGs I'd love to get into but I can't handle the old, clunky interfaces.

As fantastic as it was at the time, I'm not sure a straight re-make of Ultima Underworld would be that great today, compared with more modern RPGs like the Gothic series.

Magic Carpet, however, could be fantastic with a modern engine. I WANT IT.

Not really a straight remake as such, but there's a rather nice looking Doom 3 mod based on Hexen (hexen-edge of chaos (http://www.desura.com/mods/hexen-edge-of-chaos)), its still a work-in-progress though, currently only a demo I think.

Also on the theme of Doom 3 mods, for those hankering after some Theif but put off by the old engine there is of course The Dark Mod (http://www.thedarkmod.com/).

And its worth keeping an eye on Open Outcast (http://www.moddb.com/mods/open-outcast), although I can't image we'll be seeing it released any time soon.

It doesn't even have to be all that fancy, just port the game to a version of the Source Engine that isn't quite as prone to crashing and tweak some of the more annoying aspects of the gameplay.

Come to think of it, considering how devoted some fans of the game are, I'm actually suprised that no one has done something similar to this yet.

The original NOLF needs to be remade simply because the sound doesn't work right anymore. Last time I tried to play it the only part of the music that worked was the drums. Imagine the opeinging intro with nothing but "boom bap boom bap boom bap" for 5 minutes.

There's a high-res patch out. There's also a mod manager that helps to get it all running smoothly.
I started playing with it, kinda pooped myself a bit, haven't been back yet. Has more to do with busy-ness and other games in the backlog than the pants-pooping though. Seeing as I've never played it I was thinking I could do a Diary of my experience.

Dark Reign

Yes! I loved that game (in part 'cause the developer was Australian and I felt they were doing an awesome job of representing in my favourite genre). Loved the story, setting, graphics were great, smartest AI of the time... Too bad they ruined DR2 by thinking that 3D graphics could replace innovation in any other area. I also think it was developed at a different studio (Pandemic instead of Auran if I remember correctly).

I'm amazed I didn't post this before: Jedi Knight would be awesome with new graphics and Jedi Outcast's gameplay.

Realms of Arkania 2: Star Trail

I'd kill to get a high res version of that game with a decent UI.

Oh hell yes. All three of them, please.

Severence: Blade of Darkness because it's Dark Souls. Only better.

And Deus Ex. Revamp the graphics (and the awfully stupid AI) but keep the gameplay and it'll be perfect.

Graphics updates, man. I want it to look smooth not blocky with high-res textures

Oh, yeah. Bug-fix, pl0x

Hey they can just bring Twins Snakes to PC, scale the graphics up, save so much effort.

But hey if they remake it, please add a section in which you can pilot that Rex and Hind-D and M1 tank.

BTW, Konami's PC titles is a pain in the ass to get them really run. There are always in conflict with graphic drivers.

I replayed Severance three years ago when it was the only thing my laptop could run and I was in the middle of the move. Those animations and textures were still pretty sweet.

But it wouldn't hurt for it to improve on that, right?

That Blade Runner game as well, and fix it up a bit while you're at it.

The protagonist needed to be done properly on release. He looked like absolute arse compared to the gorgeous backgrounds. NPCs were slightly better because they didn't move around too much.

Severence looks just fine. I'd much rather see a full-fledged sequel.

I'm so glad this will never happen.
