Post recent metal music you've found or old favorites, regardless of the subgenre. I'm sure there's quite a few fans of heavy music on these forums - there usally is in gamer communities.

[LANGUAGE DELETED - Watch yourself, - RPS]

I'll start out with a mix of old & newish stuff:

I'm a bit of a lapsed metal fan so most of these aren't exactly new releases.

Got this thread off to a good start with some Opeth, though. Blackwater Park is a stunning album, never get tired of listening to it.

Taking advise from one of the top comments from the Jets 'n Guns Soundtrack: Don't listen to this music while playing FPS (or any action games, really), or you WILL be banned for hacking. I've tried it myself with countless Warsow-matches in the office. ;)

Agreed, they really put on a good show. I even prefer some live versions over the original recordings, 'Face of Melinda' for example.

Ghost Reveries is really underrated, the songs you posted are in my Opeth top 10 too. My favorite album would probably be Still Life tho.

My favourite stuff is brutal whilst still being catchy and technically interesting, which is an incredibly difficult mark to hit. I'm not really the biggest metal fan, but I do love Mastodon, Kylesa and Baroness, so top marks to those people who posted that.

However, this band are bloody brilliant, and you are hereby commanded to listen to them.

If you have spotify here's the album Kvelertak – Kvelertak (http://open.spotify.com/album/08d7MnYYp9OEsQ8GcnMHOn)

Holy shit.....props to the people who recommended Kvelertak. Absolutely bloody amazing stuff. Like Soundtrack of Our Lives & The Hives gone me(n)tal.

Great thread this, picked up a lot of excellent music from this that I wasn't aware of. I liked metal as a teenager, then moved off to indie, punk, hardcore & post-rock for my guitar fix and haven't listened to much metal since. Stumbled on Masotodon's Leviathan a few years ago after reading a rave review, really liked that and been meaning to investigate more of that ilk. A lot of the newer bands here turned out to be available on my emusic.com account so I've blown most of this month's downloads on a metal binge. From good recommendations here I've picked up these this week and really enjoying them:

Kvelertak - Kverertak. If he was still here, John Peel would be playing this and getting them in for a session.
Baroness - Blue Record.
Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit. This is awesome stuff.
Kylesa - Spiral Shadow

Searching for Ulver tracks I also came across this acoustic compilation Whom the Moon a Nightsong Sings (http://www.allmusic.com/album/whom-the-moon-a-nightsong-sings-r2039249) which is rather good. I'm reading Game of Thrones and playing the Witcher at the moment, this album is the perfect soundtrack.

If you look at it one way, on the cover of that Autopsy album the zombies in the background are Morbid Angel fans that are so in despair over their idol losing its head they haven't noticed that Chris and Danny have snuck in to steal it and made Autopsy the kings of the genre.

I've been steadily loosing interest in metal over the last couple of years or so (even though I still play in a death metal band) and have gone back to hardcore. So have some of that.

Rolo Tomassi - Interesting ''progressive'' hardcore I guess. From sheffield.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RXQt-iN6JA

The Dillenger Escape Plan - I know we all know who they are but many people wrote off Option Paralysis saying it wasn't true Dillinger. I think you should give it a listen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q5qvft2i-s

Iwrestledabearonce - One of the dreaded 'cores but somehow good for it and with a sense of humour (I think Pazuzu was Professor Farnsworth's dragon thing he was also a Babylonian demon or something too....Pazuzuuuuuu!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKlbsrl3yJg

Converge - Another classic. This is also off their latest album, which some criticised as ''too approachable''. I fail to see how that is a bad thing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2ac5z_xnXc

Botch - Because...Botch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZM6hl75VbI).

I've also been listening to Beecher, These Arms Are Snakes and Narrows, as well as others.

Also, LINK (http://www.myspace.com/blindspite) to my shit band.

Not only are they still going they just keep getting better. I don't think that Mark has it in him to write a bad album 'cause fourteen in and I haven't heard anything that would constitute as bad. I'm fully convinced that number fifteen will continue their flawless record which is unheard of. Even Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden eventually started making duds after six or seven albums which is better than most bands' entire careers.

You should try and get the last four (Atlantis Ascendent, Spiral Castle, Gates Of Fire and Voyager) which is where Mark reactivated the band with a new line-up and they brought the epic elements further into the spotlight. If you like you can refer to the playlist I posted back on page five (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/forums/showthread.php?195-Thread-of-Metal&p=9973&viewfull=1#post9973) to see how they progressed from the old Manilla Road to the new. From Sea Witch onwards is where the "new" Manilla Road started (in quotations because, hey, Manilla Road still sounds pretty ancient).

Hellhammer is probably to blame. Or Venom, they couldn't play either. Are you familiar with both? I've found that listening to Hellhammer demos and Welcome To Hell back-to-back for an entire week erases any concepts of musical virtuosity and stellar productions from your mind.

Orson Welles is dead! Ol Mr Lee is a suitable replacement though.

I hope I know Hellhammer considering I have the Demon Entrails 3 LP sitting in my vinyl box alongside a beat-up car boot copy of Apoc raids.
The question was kinda rhetorical though. Pick a few of the old 80s bands like Venom, Hellhammer, Sodom, Napalm Death, Possessed or whatnot and you get the old FASTER FASTER FASTER! vibe from them. Metalcore doesn't necessarily have to be a dirty term.

Its weird as during the 90s or the first half of the last decade I cant remember hearing that term at all, then suddenly if it was angry and shouty and did not fit into death metal or grind people just lumped it as Deathcore and it got spat on. Got a load of shit from people for having Today is the Day albums a couple of years back.

The first place I read the term was on the sticker on the cover of Hate, Fear and Power by Hirax that I bought back in 1998 when I didn't have a turntable to play it on and that album was originally released in 1986. "A major step-forward for Orange County's raging metal-core band. Heavy drums, grinding axes and melodic vocals all in a flash of energy." That was back before D.R.I. popularised the term "crossover" with that album of theirs. It's funny how certain things get popular at the expense of others and how such a wide-reaching term can be narrowed into describing a sub-genre of a sub-genre but people can be pretty reductionist at times.

I'd rather listen to Raging Violence and H,F&P than anything by D.R.I. because they're both boss. I probably should have used these songs to represent metalcore but Hirax don't have a vocalist who uses a saw blade as a microphone stand.

There's a Twisted Sister record but that's awful...

I suppose snow is *connected* with Christmas. Christmas is pretty grim and, depending on your location, usually frostbitten... so yeah, black metal is fairly Christmasy.

Well, there's an inlay in the archive which I hope has the proper dimensions so you can print that off and then record the whole thing onto one side of a C120 and then have your very own tape that you can listen to in your car or through your super sweet boombox. Put it on both sides so you don't have to keep rewinding it.

I just wish that I had room for Merciless but I wanted to keep it at just under an hour.

It's always weird to listen to Estonians, since it sounds quite close to Finnish but can still sometimes be completely incomprehensible.
