Just some questions, concerns, and etc. that can all probably be answered with a yes or no, or "the forum is still being set up."
Will avatars be allowed? DONE
Quoting doesn't work right now, I assume that'll be fixed in the near future, though? DONE
Will there eventually be more forums?
Posts aren't being counted towards postcounts?
Second and third categories don't have titles, yet.
URLs don't turn into links automatically, no tags. DONE
I just realized, I complain a lot.
I'm new to these forums, reading the post being the first recognition that they even exist, so forgive me if this thread is in bad taste or anything of the like.
This is incredibly sexy, thanks to RPS for doing this. Proper forums ho!

Yeah, looking back at the old ones, this is definitely a step in the right direction.
Be cool to see double posts from one person automerge, though. Seems like they weren't finished with this when they put it up, though, so we'll see what else gets added.

Damn, my beloved vBulletin?! I love this engine so there's nothing I could possibly complain about here. Maybe this whole reputation system could be a nice add-on, but it's not really anything important.
Nice forum now. :) I do not need any post counts. Just hide them completely and all will be fine. :)

Can we have something where you vote a post with + or - 1? I saw that on the Word of Tanks forum and i love it. You can easily ignore stupid posts and you can see the popular ideas.
I don't mean the user reputation, that's something else. I mean each individual post to be voted up or down.

I second the RSS feeds for individual threads (especially our blood bowl league ;-)). The forum can move pretty fast when everyone posts at once and made the RSS feed a pretty essential feature for me in the old forum. Maybe its hidden somewhere? If not, it will be very useful if it can be added!

I think all the spammers will be "Obscure Node", that may help some people detect a spammer early. So it helps, at least having 2 or 3 ranks. Anyway, the ones we have get seems created based on nerd humours, so if you are a nerd, you may get some enjoyement from then (I do).

Why no more RSS feeds of individual threads? Only mail subscriptions? Is this a vBulletin "feature"?
Other people have asked for sub-forums, but I'd like to ask specifically for a dev forum for those looking for feedback on their games, etc. Maybe move that TBS strategy design thread in there as well, keep it easier to find rather than having it a mess in the bigger boards.

I have an issue with the search function. It appears that when I search for a word (like "Terraria"), the results tell me which thread the word is in, but don't allow me to go directly to the first post in which it appears. With threads potentially being long and variable in their topic-stickiness, this would be useful.
While tinkering I've found that displaying 40 posts per page, firefox's in-page search and each individual thread's "search thread" function have helped.
It's also quite possible that I'm Doing It Wrong. Happy to be guided.

Well I tried to search for "rss" to see if it was mentioned in this seven page thread, but apparently that term was excluded because it's too short. I know RSS feeds can be enabled in vBulletin but for the life of me I can't find one on this forum. It would be really helpful for threads like the Blood Bowl leagues, which sometimes get 40 posts a day. If the feature is already in and I'm an idiot, feel free to tell me so AFTER you point me in the right direction.

I can't hear it anymore. Okay, you guys don't like consoles, I get it, but please stop throwing words like "consolization" or "dumbed down" around like it they actually mean something. The sheer amount of this makes the forums almost unreadable to me. I guess some anti-console bias is to be expected from a PC-gaming community but the amount of smug patronization has become intolerable. Just because I have a couple of consoles and enjoy playing with them doesn't mean I'm mentally retarded or some form of subhuman, thank you very much. Bah.

To sum it up:
- Enable post count or remove it completely.

- The button that takes us to our last read post in a thread.
The 'What's New' button up top will take you to the last post since you last visited the forum, regardless of whether or not you read that post.
Alternatively, go to a thread, click 'Thread Tools' at the top and select 'Subscribe to Thread'. You'll then be able to go to 'Quick Links' (at the very top) -> 'Subscribed Threads'. Clicking the small blue icon next to a thread title SEEMS to take me to the last post I read in the thread, but I haven't tried it very much. I need to test further!

Also, the date is American style, very illogical and annoying for a british site.

I'd like to see maybe the last 5 posted in threads on the forum front page. Than its just a refresh away to keep track. it can be a little tedious perusing the forums as is. I thought every one having a 0 post count was a great statement for the forums to make, correct me if I'm wrong but post counts seem to be incentive for some people to post garble.

Yeah definitely lose the post counts again (in fact lost the whole 'Posts 0'). It just encourages user spam as people equate post count to meaningfulness.
Also yes the spam is epidemic at times. Registered accounts need to be email verified (if they aren't already), and I'd recommend appointing some people to deal with the spam, though I suggest refraining from giving them titles that might lead to delusions of grandeur as to what their role is.

We could use bigger avatar pictures, there is so much unused space. Seriously, they could be much bigger.
The only unused space I see on your post is the white space under the one line you wrote, which needs to leave enough room for your avatar on the left. Not saying you're wrong to want bigger ones, just not seeing where this unused space is.
Also I'm assuming post-counts are being turned on for a random period of time, before they go off again, so we can all have random post-counts like in the old forum.

"Tech Help" -> "Tech Help & Discussion"

Here's something that's been bugging me for a while - often when I visit these fine forums, loads of threads will have bold titles. "Great!", I think, "Lots of lovely people talking about lovely PC games, or the correct usage of the word rape." But then I click the link and the most recent post is one I've already read. Sometimes it'll even be one of mine (which I've definitely read).
So, yeah. It doesn't seem to be correctly tracking which posts are new and which are not. I do go through the entire forum and open anything I want to read in a new tab, then read through them one by one - could that have something to do with it?

From a google search:
1. In AdminCP, go to Custom BB Codes and click Add New BB Code
2. Enter the following info in the appropriate fields:
Title: Strikethrough
Tag: Strike
Replacement: <strike>{param}</strike>
Complete the rest of the fields as you like (to be honest, I believe the only field that you "must" set up as I've described is the "Replacement" one, as that's the one that tells vBulletin what html code you want to use for this bb code)

It seems though genuine argument and conversation which are RPS mainstays are being steered unintentionally by the few who post the most/loudest. Its not uncommon to see little known voices with great points brushed aside in favor of a few fleshing out there own points to no end. I only mention this cause it seems more people have been getting on the whats wrong with rps bandwagon and i don't think its hard to see how the community can shelf some of that blame. RPS really used to be one of the most welcoming communities out there in the interwebs, i don't think it would hurt to remember that.

The King Arthur II ad doesn't really work well with the site, imo.
The "Search" and "Read our Finest Words" boxes block the logo of the game, making it difficult to tell what game it is unless you are already a fan (and thus, don't really need the ad.)

Found a little problem - Those little icons which mention tags/attachments? They can cover up the page numbers for moderate to longer topics in search results, meaning it's very hard to go straight to the last page or even see what the last page number is:
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/4043/rpsproblem.jpg

I wasn't sure where to put this, but I think here's as good a place as any.
I think the forums could possibly benefit from a front-line, visible moderating team. I think it'd be great for many reasons - Firstly, if members have a problem they'll know who to go to. Secondly, if they tell people to stop being dicks, it'll be more visible and (arguably) carry more weight. Thirdly, it looks a little "better".
There's been a number of arguments, hostile discussions and so forth lately (and no, I'm not going to state I had no part in it), and I'd say a more prominent and larger mod team would hopefully help reduce the frequency of such events as well as their length(s).
Since the update to to forum, I am unable to post from my moby (HTC Desire). I can read fine, and the textboxes highlight nicely, but it simply won't allow me to enter text...

We just had a daylight savings time switch over here in the States, but the forum didn't update automatically, which is the option I had it on. Changing it to "Always use DST" displayed the correct time, and then changing it back to "Detect DST automatically" also displayed the correct time. So the latter option is able to tell when DST is in effect, it just didn't display the changes without a 'reminder'.

It's a problem, but it's a case of where do we draw the line?
If there is a facility to randomly force a Captcha, we might escape some of them, but not all.
The other option I can think of is account verification, but that seems very, very inefficient.

Well, there is the nagging problem that if someone showed up out of the blue, it doesn't matter if they're affiliated with whatever product they're hawking - everybody assumes that already, and then attacks them for being shills.
Saying "you need X number of posts before you can talk about the game you really, really like in a new thread," however, will just limit the number of new members to the forum, and effectively turn it into the same two dozen grognards dominating every discussion.
Personally, I'd err on the side of inclusion and let folks shill, because ignoring one thread a day is far less destructive than scaring off potential new posters.

Just have a look at existing threads, people do this often, an i5 2500(k), compatible memory and motherboard, power supply to match, an argument over which graphics card is the better value and then endorsements over buying an SSD and how much better it makes your like, iirc :) Seriously, you'll find several recent threads, just add to one of those and sooner or later you'll end up with the required post count anyway.

I do not check PMs on here. The last time I looked they were about people complaining that I had curtailed their freedom of speech. There is no freedom of speech here. This is my forum, and threads will be closed and users banned as I see fit.
Re Guild Wars, I will redo the subfolders later today. I have a couple of ideas for other sections we need.

No idea if this has been discussed in the past, but could we get user profiles to not be indexed by search engines? I.E., RPS forum profiles wouldn't show up in search results. This may be a major change for some users (ideally vbulletin would allow it as a per-user configurable setting, but oh well), but I for one would greatly prefer it. Linked below, a quick discussion of doing this with vbulletin.

You need to make a certain number of posts (10, I think) before you'll be allowed to start a new thread. Nothing personal, but there have been some problems- to put it lightly- with spammers in the past.

Hi, I'm new and joined to talk about a specific game but I can't start the thread to do it and I didn't notice anything telling me that there was a post limit, I just assumed. Hoping this will count towards my total and I can one day add something new.

So to combat spam you encourage people to spam first before they can talk about what they want to talk about. Interesting.

I guessed as much but there could be something up in the Main Rules fora that would say something to this effect, maybe? Otherwise it is just a bit confusing, because nothing indicates what actually needs to be done. :)

Also, quite possibly there could be a generic sticky topic in the Tech Area for small questions that are not meant to develop into a full discussion but rather should have a short answer? Seems like it could stop a number of "small" topics coming up probably every now and then (say is A better than B if I have £x to spend).

I've been wondering, are the old RPS forums still accessible? The first time I came here I could still view the contents, in the other Feedback thread someone mentioned http://rockpapershotgun.com/rpsforum/, but this generates a 404 error now... Are they gone for good? Or viewable somewhere else?
I'm not really looking for something specific, it's just the "Internet history, must be archived... cannot be lost!" kind of feel... ;-)

Would it be possible to update either the Rules or add in some sort of FAQ thread to highlight the minimum number of posts people need in order to make a thread?
Although it's been mentioned here several times over, new users are still going into other threads, even necro'ing long silent threads in order to ask why they can't make a thread yet and why they can't find anything about it.
I've no problem with the current implementation or restrictions, but it's almost as tiresome answering these questions as seeing the spambots.

Rule #1: Nobody ever reads the FAQ.
Rule #2: Nobody ever reads the Rules (including these two rules, when they are mentioned).
Rule #3: There is NO rule #3.

Just a random question that I am not sure where to post: when does one get the marvellous ability to make their own threads? I couldn't find that in the forum rules and I was going to put up my XCOM-retelling literary effort for some well-deserved public criticism. :) (Apologies if the answer is blindingly obvious, I apparently have not been blinded yet.)
[EDIT: Nevermind, it seems like I failed to read the posts just above mine. Consider it obsolete. :D)

You'll have to be patient at the moment, it being a) the holiday period and b) the weekend, sorry, this forum is powered by good will and scotch eggs, not by a fanatical devotion to the pope. I'm not sure about feedback, but you could certainly ask for it if your thread does not get approved.

Here is the message that has just been posted:

The most success I've had with poached eggs was using Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's method. They came out perfectly.
"Crack the eggs into a saucer. Get a pan of water boiling, add a few drops of white wine vinegar and stir the water to create a whirlpool. Tip the eggs into the eddy, lower the heat and poach for three minutes, until the whites are set. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper."
Bonus points for any recipe that involves an eddy.
This restaurant technique (http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2010/10/how-to-poach-an-egg-perfectly-nick-anderer-maialino-new-york-technique.html) sounds like it would work. It isn't really practical for less than 25 covers but might be worth a try if there's someone you really want to impress with an egg.

Don't panic -- I just blitzed the moderation queue on the forum. I didn't realise some of the posts were so old!
No panic :P just thought I'd bring it up since there was no mention of it yet. The post I received notifications about, however, weren't seemingly being hold up in the moderation queue, in fact I remember reading a few of them at the time.

Hey guys, quick question. In the welcome email I received, it says, "In an effort to prevent spam, you will not be able to create topics until you have created ten posts in other topics. This restriction does not apply to topics in the "For The Promotion Of PC Game-Making Projects And Things Like That" subforum."
I am not ready to promote my game yet, but I did want to comment on other people's games and give feedback. I don't seem to have posting permissions in that section at all though. I can't even reply to posts. At the bottom of the page it says,
"You may not post new threads
You may not post replies
You may not post attachments"
Is there a requirement I am missing? Thanks!

Sometimes when people post to game-specific forums it isn't always clear that it's a game-specific thread on the What's New page. I mean, it does tell you right there on the page which subforum the thread came from, but it's all the way over there on the right of the screen, and I never look at that. You could say that's my fault, but the design of the page implies that it's less important than the number of views/replies and who posted last and when, since it puts it after them. Neither of these are important: we can estimate the number of replies from the number of pages the thread has, and if we're looking at the What's New page, we can assume the last post was recent. So we have these important and associated pieces of information separated by unimportant stuff, when good usability practice would be to put them together.
So... Any possibility of having that subforum indication somewhere at the left, next to the thread title, rather than relegated to the end of the line after the unimportant stuff?

This is a thread for forum feedback, not for having another word in a topic when the topic is closed. However, a quick look at the first page of the John Walker index shows the following:
Two neutral (or purely informational) articles
Two negative articles
Six positive articles
I think that meets the "majority of the posts I write are positive" condition, though I acknowledge my sample size is small.
