Do you guys think $45 for the Max Payne 3 pre-order plus the first two games (I played the first back in the day, but don't own them currently) + a bunch of DLC is a good deal?
edit: I was planning on getting Alan Wake beacuse I don't have time to wait for sales because when they come I probably won't have time to play the game (hope that made sense), so I was willing to pay full price for one game to enjoy over a couple of weeks. So it's either Max or Alan.
Not a massive bargain - but the newly released Legend of Grimrock is selling well on Steam DESPITE being rather expensive there (at least in GBP)
It's £10.67 (discounted from £11.99) on Steam
$13.49 on GoG (taxes included - that's about £8.70)
$13.49 from the developer who offers both DRM free (ala GoG) and a Steam Key!!!!
So do the last one then and save over £2 on the Steam price!!
Squid in a Box has posted a 20% discount coupon code for Waves. Code is "TWITTER".
Also possible to get the deal through this link: https://t.co/AF1EoITW
Waves is polished twin stick geometric shooter with a variety of game modes and what I've found to be a fine sense of humour.

What game would you recommend?
Revenge of the Titans if you don't have it. Otherwise I'd say take a look at the previews, they're on pretty different ends of the spectrum so hard to judge what you might like
Only considerations I'd say is Revenge and Titans Attack are both on Steam, which probably means massive sale discounts come summer sale time, while the other two games are not.

The individual titles are also on sale for 5.00 (Warband), 3.74 (base game) and 2.50 (Fire and Sword) if you already own some of the titles. They are listed as "Other DRM" so not sure if that means Steamworks or not.
The 1c collection also appears to NOT be a price mistake as it is still up. 20 bucks for like 80 games is pretty swell, even if some of them appear to be total stinkers.
Thanks for this.... grabbing Mount & Blade Collection +rep!

Revenge of the Titans is a fun but tough tower defense game and you pretty much have to read the wiki to figure out the game mechanics.

I played it on the 360, so take of that what you will. I found the game play to be largely repetitive and with no real deviation in difficulty; you're introduced to increasingly difficult monsters as the game progresses, but you get increasingly powerful weapons too, along with copious amounts of ammo. There's minor exploration for 'secret' collectables, but it's so obvious where the path is that you'd have to make a conscious decision to not turn left to look for them when you reach that fork and the way you need to go is obviously right.
That said, if you enjoy the scenario and are interested in it, there are certainly worse games to play. I wouldn't ever really say it was bad, just a bit bland really.

It's fun. It's overall not very scary. I liken it more to reading a Stephen King book more than being in the company of other horror games. Gameplay wise it is indeed linear and a bit short, but overall fun I'd say. Mechanics are simple and do get a bit repetitive at times, but they are easy to get ahold of (there's a reason the spinoff is a weird Horde mode game). Main draw for me was the atmosphere (more weird and campy than scary). Worth a look.
Though I did play it on console toybox, so I can't say much of its' port, though I think the port got largely positive reactions.

I bought the 1c pack on Gamersgate to own the recognisable [to me] games. King's Bounty, Men of War, UFO, Theatre of War, Death to Spies, Necrovision, Space Rangers, Star Wolves & Faces of War. I now own Pathologic twice on the same account. Was worth buying for these alone. The question is are there any hidden gems or other games worth playing in this pack that you know of? I'm checking footage on youtube of lesser known/overlooked games. Some appear to be the definition of bad. Very bad. AIM 2 looks like its worth a shot. Fantasy Wars? Off-Road Drive? Real Warfare? XIII century? Reign: Conflict of Nations? Half the fun is finding hidden-gems but thought it worth putting the question out there...
p.s. Men of War: Vietnam didn't require registering on Steam. Just an input on launch of serial code....

Well, it's not an enhanced edition of G3, it's an enhanced edition of G3: Forsaken Gods, which was an expandalone. Basically, they took G3, removed 2/3 of the map, removed most of the NPC's, gave horrible writing and voice acting to the remaining NPC's (there are a few orcs who speak in two entirely different voices, depending on if it's a new line or recycled from G3), and made the balancing very un-Gothic.
G3 with the community patch is essentially the enhanced edition of that game.

Get the Gothic Universe bundle, definitely worth the price of $5. I got about 250 hours out of those 3 games in their respective first playthroughs. Gothic 4 is a completely different game by a different developer, and is pretty worthless.

I'd buy that pack if risen was in it instead of G4, but I think i mght go for the gothic universe for a fiver. even in euros :S
I picked-up a Gothic Bundle last year and my experience was a bit 'meh'.
First-up - Arcania is shit and not worth anyone's money - ignore it completely.
Gothic 1 and 2 are a BITCH to get to work on Vista/W7 (esp 64bit) - people seem to have varying levels of success but I just found myself going in circles trying to make them work without crashing.
I reverted to an XP (32bit) PC and even then they were a bit shaky - I played enough of those 2 games to see their appeal but the prospect of crashes tends to deter you.
I then moved to Gothic 3 which is pretty poor out of the box, but the fan patches change it almost out of all recognition - I got a tonne of fun out of the fully fan-patched vanilla G3, I'd recommend it to anyone who likes that sort of RPG.
So the basic pack is a good buy - I'd skip the full pack tho because Arcania is a turd...

Keep in mind the original Gothic games can be a bit annoying to get working right. Well, the first game mostly. Did a bunch of tweaking to fix one issue then when I finally got playing I ran into a semi-common bug where my inventory was invisible, which kind of made playing the game a chore.
Probably still worth getting the original three for a few bucks though.

Throwing in a recommendation for Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes. It's a clever blend of puzzling and tactics that's a joy to play. The campaign is long and meaty, although it does have too much exposition for its own good. The sprite work is great if you don't mind a slightly anime-ish look. And it has hot seat action, which I rather enjoyed with Ms. Miker.

Note: There is a pretty good chance this is a pricing error and that it'll be fixed by the time you read this:
Gamersgate has the 1C complete pack for 20.00 USD, which is a rather insane deal even though 1c is kind of a iffy company. Notable franchises are King's Bounty, Men of War, and Space Rangers, with a few cult following types like Pathologic, and those games alone are probably worth the price.

Be aware that the region locking restrictions are kind of fuzzy at this stage, as far as I can tell you will be able to choose any server to play on but you MUST purchase a copy from your region in order to access your account.

The textures are still quite low up close, but they've fixed all of the launch issues really. If you're on the fence, I'd say get it, at the core of RAGE is some incredibly fun shooting, it's very satisfying, just a little inflated with slightly unneeded gamey bits.

Sorry to burst your bargain bubble, but you can download Faerie Solitaire for free on Linux, Mac, or Windows at the bottom of the developer's Infinity Bundle (http://www.infinitybundle.com/) page. I played an embarrassing amount of it a few nights ago when I should have been playing something more hardcore. Has kind of a mahjong tile matching feel to it. It's Steamworks with optional Uplay functionality (all within the game itself).
Just for the record, Uplay seems to be mandatory in R.U.S.E. One has to create or use an existing ubi.com/Uplay account to even see the main menu. However, is does work completely offline once set up.

I can confirm that is exactly what I had to do to even see the main menu after I bought it at the recent sale. Of course, I didn't remember my ubisoft account details and had a mini-fit that I couldn't skip past that part.

Oh. Well, it's been like two years or something since I got R.U.S.E. so my memory is a bit rusty.
Has kind of a mahjong tile matching feel to it.
It's a nicely re-rigged version of Tri-Peaks/Hi Lo/Golf/Spit Solitaire - empty the stacks by taking cards 1 above or below the waste card (suit irrelevant) - they've added a scoring system and some detritus to collect which unlocks pets etc.
I've had it a while and I like it BUT I think their obsession with Faeries etc. is a bit 90s and a bit girly for most gamers (pirates, monkeys or zombies is more like it but each to their own perhaps)??

PWYW has always been something of a strange model relying almost entirely on goodwill. HIB keeps that going with their charity thing, but other bundles might do better to move to a more explicit Kickstartery pricing structure, where $5 is the minimum, $10 gets you extras, etc.

That's pretty much what Indie Gala has done these last couple of rounds, and I'm not a huge fan of it. Now, I'd love a flexible bundle. Give me a selection. Here are 8 games in the bundle. Get any 5 for $5 or all eight for $7.50. Something like that would be fantastic.

Devs have said they will give Steam keys to those that want them provided Valve allows them too, which they expect (I imagine given Arcen's participation in Valve's promotions that they are on good enough terms that this will happen), though they can't 100 percent promise it. Today's Steam daily is Warhammer 40K: Space Marine, 60% off. Whilst the single player is slightly derivative, it's satisfying and fun enough to play through. Do so on the harder difficulty, I recommend, because it's a bit more strategic and requires a bit more thinking. That being said, if you want to go ballistic and chopz doze orkz, then by all means go on a lower level. The multiplayer also consists of two competitive modes, 4vs4, with a TDM and capture and hold (think Conquest from Battlefield). There is also a horde mode for up to 4 players up against bots. Fair warning; whilst the MP is pretty well balanced and has some cool things, such as being able to mimic the person who just killed set-up on revive, it uses peer to peer and it, unfortunately, shows.
It's a very good package at the price it is. DLC is not included, however.

Dead Space 1 and 2 are on sale again on Steam for $5 a piece, are they worth playing on PC? I already have the first one on 360 but I never finished it, I'd prefer to play it on PC if it isn't a shoddy port and if it plays well with mouse+keyboard.

24-04-2012, 06:26 PM
The ports are rather excellent bar the weird v-sync glitch (turn off vsync in-game, force through drivers or d3doverrider). They run smooth as butter, have ridiculously short load times, and are all around solid, if sometimes painfully lacking a (working) anti-aliasing solution. I found DS1 pretty repetitive and gave up halfway through, though I hear DS2 is better and has more setpieces to keep things varied.
The JG Man
24-04-2012, 06:33 PM
I'd say they're about the same in quality content, but have different flaws that make neither superior on the whole. That being said, 2 has a lot more polish and plays a little better at any rate. I played DS1 on 360 then DS2 on PC and enjoyed them both. The PC version has instantaneous switch, if I remember correctly, between 360 pad and KB+M if you want to play with a pad. The higher resolution and general clarity means the interface is a lot better on the PC, although that's something of a given.
Worth the prices of admission for both titles.

The most popular mouse mod just fell off the face of the earth, I think it fired off too many virus scanners and got dropped from its hosting as malware or something. I keep meaning to get it on Wii, the Wii Splinter Cell game was fine to me (as a splinter cell fan) and that got heavily slagged off in reviews, so the glowing reviews Resident evil 4 gets must mean its excellent right?

If a game does distribute the load to all cores equally then yes, your 1.5 dual would have a slight advantage. Though a lot of games (not only older ones, Shogun 2 comes to mind) tend to use all of the first core and only a fraction of the second (third/fourth). So a 1.5 dual core would then handle way worse than a 2.4 Single Core.

A further related question after those two helpful responses:
Would increasing the system RAM make much difference then? The integrated graphics share the system memory, so I'm wondering if doubling that would actually effect performance in 3D games.
I'm not expecting miracles, I'm just wondering if it's worth the money.

RAM will help with things like Football Manager (though the resolution makes it pretty much unplayable anyway) but not much else. I bumped my netbook from 1gb to 2gb but really it had no impact on gaming. RAM will just let you have more tabs in firefox etc. The general rule with netbooks (unless they're one of the fancy ones with nvidia graphics) is forget anything 3d, stick to popcap, old games, etc. Hell even snes/megadrive emulators can be a bit of a struggle on the bloody things. Really rather glad I ditched mine and spent a fairly tiny £700 on a laptop (nice core i7 8GB RAM NVIDIA 550M [2GB]), not a huge amount for some proper gaming goodness, runs skyrim on maximum settings quite comfortably. If you've got the cash, upgrade from the netbook.
The problem with netbooks is not the processor, but rather the graphics. Intel graphics and gaming do not go together, especially the shit they put in netbooks.
Depends on the Netbook - early models with 1.6ghz single core processor and GMA950 chips are useless - but later models with dual-cores and better chipsets will play most 'non AAA' stuff just fine.

Gamersgate appears to be having a Sega week, though like usual, they have a mishmash of stuff up on Sunday while they take things down and put the new stuff up. Few things not on sale at all yet that I expect will be added in a bit.
Highlights:
Football Manager 2012: 9.00 USD
Total War Shogun 2 DLC in a variety of discounts
Sonic Generations 15.00 USD
Condemned Criminal Origins 8.00 USD (mentioned mainly because it doesn't go on sale much)
Most of the Total War base games on sale for the usual prices
Sonic CD 2.50 USD

A lot of Sega's stuff from the past few years is Steamworks so registers on there (Shogun 2, Sonic Generations, Renegade Ops, Football Manager).
There's also another sale on Magicka and it's dozen DLC going on right now.

Seriously? It's showing 15 euros for me :(
I've been thinking of getting it for a while now because I loved the old manager (http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/656/Manager,+The.html) game. But the nice thing about the old game was that you only ever had to watch a few stats, and the new ones seem more like spreadsheet manager (coming from a former EVE trader and manufacturer :) ). Can I get by with just paying attention to a few important numbers and hope for the best or I do really have to control every aspect of every player?

Gamersgate (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-SONICCD/sonic-cd) has Sonic CD for £2, 50% off. It registers on Steam.
Sonic CD is a 'classic' 2D Sonic title, but with more emphasis on exploration in the levels than speed running, although that's certainly possible. This latest remake really sets the bar on how to do remakes properly, with a variety of features that enhance the game from its original creation 20 years ago. For a lot of Sonic fans, it's their favourite 2D Sonic, for fewer it's not as good as the traditional trilogy and disinteresting, but not necessarily bad. It also has 360 controller support off-the-bat. Feel free to share any thoughts/ask for further impressions in the RPS Sonic thread (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/forums/showthread.php?2731-Rock-Paper-Sonic)!

That's right, its a Roguelike with cooperative play. Optionally procedurally generated worlds(a default exists too), with items with hidden consequences until tried for the first time and cooperative play which is not just "support fire", you can help your team mate in combat, share items and health with them (using a high five) and draw enemy attention.
The game also has dynamic split screen which would merge your screens while you are close together.
Literally ahead of its time.

Given that it's a Netbook - I was generally impressed with what would work on a newish Samsung Netbook (dual core integrated graphics wotsit). Certainly it ironed out the black-hole that was the single-core/GMA950 'will barely run retro titles' models.
We're talking Torchlight and other indies titles tho - not Batman AA/AC or MW3...

Playing it again right now and honestly I could happily restart it as soon as I'm finished. It's just so fascinating to see what events your choices set off, what little differences there are between each playthrough. My only issue with alpha protocol was being forwarded forced to kill a certain sniper rifle user near the end after literally killing no-one the whole game. It wasn't as annoying as DXHR because my pistol and stealth powers still "worked" but in narrative terms making me kill someone I liked was a massive betrayal.

I have a feeling there will be a way to not kill Sniper Person, tranquilizer rounds maybe? And the fact there wasn't a section where all my powers were taken away was nice. Fuck that game mechanic. And doing it for a boss fight? Oh Human Revolutions why are you so bipolar at times.
I think the thing with AP for me is that I can't think of a part of the game I dread playing - even the boss fights are short enough or simple enough or have a cheese-method that they become trivial. But so many other games, games I love, have a thing or two that I loathe having to do. Planet scanning in Mass Effect; Spellhold, beholders & illithids in BG2; every swamp area in The Witcher 1, that sort of thing. I've replayed several AP levels on this playthrough (accidently shot US marines, SIEs people etc) and keep on enjoying it.

Used M+KB all the way with the only difficulty being 1/2 the hacking minigame, and with practice that is no longer a problem. As is usual for Unreal engine stuff it may be worth checking ini files for Mouse Smoothing/Acceleration rubbish going on, in case you suspect that's being an issue.

I tried it with both. I can't shoot straight with thumbsticks, though, so that was a no-go. The M&KB controls were better, but it still felt like I was fighting them the entire time. Perhaps there's a setting somewhere I didn't track down, I don't know, but it was frustrating enough to put me off the game despite being fascinated with espionage RPG's (used to P&P Top Secret SI and Millenium's End) so clearly it wasn't a minor issue for me.

That's a pity. I'd really urge you keep going until you're out of the Middle East as that's when things really open up. And maybe by then the controls will feel more natural. Incidentally, how do you find Mass Effect?

It does assume you went Pistols + Stealth + Technical Aptitude for your main skills, or at least put a load of points into each one. My first game was with Pistols + Stealth + Martial Arts, so it just took longer. Current Mike is going with Assault Rifles + Sabotage + Tech. Apt. with some Toughness thrown in, so it'll be interesting to see how that works out.

The hard mode in Shank frustrated me to no end. I beat it in single-player and again in co-op but "mastering" the game involves beating every level with the checkpoints cut out and the enemies all doubly resilient. Thankfully, the boss fights are considered separate levels, so it's not exactly Ninja Gaiden.

They're fucking amazing - very intelligent writing, great action, great characters.

Green Man Gaming (http://www.greenmangaming.com/?gmgr=rinasawe) has a 75% off Paradox sale. They also have 30% off a fair number of other games including Tropico 4, Dungeon Siege 3, Men of War Assault Squad, Disciples 3: Resurrection, and Tome Raider Anniversary.
UFO Afterlight is also 20% off.
Using the link above will get you some store-credit when you make your first purchase.

Apparently it's going to be 75% off Shogun 2 on Gamersgate on Friday. £7.50 by my reckoning, cheapest it's been so far? A jolly good deal regardless, particularly if you have the IGN discount too.
Renegade Ops is £3.40 today (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-ROPS/renegade-ops), which is a nice impulse buy price.

It was 75% off on Gamersgate for xmas as well, which is when I picked it up (though I haven't actually played it in any substantial way). I don't think I've ever seen it lower, though.
How does Renegade Ops online co-op work? The description makes some vague statement about "competitive co-op" but doesn't clarify. Also, does it scale? I'd likely be playing it with only one other person.

You join a p2p lobby and then try and get the highest score. The more players there are, the more health (and damage?) the enemies have, but I don't think there are more of them.

Funny thing is that the latest patch, which supposedly fixed DX11, made the game unplayable for me - I can't get it running over 20FPS, no matter how much I fiddle with the options (this on an i5-2500k, Geforce 560ti). Lots of people reported improvement, though.

There's no difference between DX11 and 9 in Arkham City.
Drop it to DX9, turn PhysX and 3D on and enjoy the ride.

That's the thing, I did all of that. Turned all settings to low, turned PhysX on and off, DX9, DX11, nothing works - framerate always hovering around 20FPS.

I believe all non-Gamersgate CK2 copies are Steamworks (which is becoming something of a worrying trend with Paradox, lately).
Edit: Oops, misread that, disregard. To my knowledge no copies of CK Complete are attached to Steam.

Surprised no-one's mentioned this yet: Bastion at 60% off (http://store.steampowered.com/app/107100), but get in quick because it's only for 3 more hours. If you haven't got it yet you owe it to yourself to play the most charming game of last year.

Batman: Arkham City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_Arkham_City) and all DLC are 50% off this weekend on Steam, making it €14 for the base game. It looks like Batman: Arkham Asylum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_Arkham_Asylum) is also on sale, 66% off, for €6,80.
Sanctum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanctum_%282011_video_game%29), the FPS/Tower Defense in a Sci-Fi setting, is free to play this weekend, and the game and all DLC are 75% off, making it €2,50.

Sanctum is by far my favorite action/tower defense hybrid, to the degree that I find it hard to play any of the other ones now. It's truly outstanding, with some genuinely deep strategic/geometric optimization that needs to be done (along with some solid, frantic shooting) to beat the higher difficulties. Definitely worth a try if you're into that kind of thing.

Orcs must Die pips sanctum for me because if the creative freedom the levels offer. Sanctum is very clearly great, I just tire of having to snipe a jiggling enemy from the start of the round to the end to achieve optimisation. Where in OMD optimisation is more about generating farcically complicated deaths.

I had good fun with Orcs Must Die! earlier this year, so I picked up the game+DLC collection for €5,-. Can't be too bad, and the setting looks fun.
Batman: Arkham City seems like a good deal too, as it is constantly named in Top 10 games of 2011 lists and so on. However, after watching a few YouTube videos of actual gameplay I'm not sure if it's something I'd like. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of choice in how you approach the levels and fights, and there's a seemingly constant prompt to do things like "Press F to take down enemy behind curtain".

Firstly, if you've not played Batman: Arkham Asylum - GET THAT FIRST. It's an absolute rock-solid near-perfect Batman experience and a bloody great game.
Batman: Arkham City is the same game given the sandbox treatment (tho AA isn't 100% linear as there's other stuff to do besides the story) and (IMO) dumbed down a touch made a bit less special in the process. If you like AA, you'll still like AC but it's by no means essential if you felt AA gave you as much Batman as you could cope with.
Also, AC relies on GFWL and many people have had nightmarish experiences with GFWL deleting their saves - certainly I'll be giving the PC release a total miss on that basis alone - that and the fact I find AC just a diluted and stretched-thin version of AA anyway - sandbox for the sake of it and nothing really new added outside of that.

For those that don't mind the hassle of getting around the US only Amazon restriction (which is rather easy) great deal coming starting Sunday. Psychonauts will be 2 bucks Sunday only, 4 bucks for the rest of the week, Costume Quest is 2.99 USD, and Stacking is 7.50 USD. There's also a collection pack for 9.99. All games are the Steam versions.
Deal starts on the 6th.

Thanks for the heads up, i'll almost certainly be picking up psychonauts for $2, whilst simultaneously feeling guilty for picking up such a great game for so little money. I'm not sure when i began to feel this kind of inverse buyer's remorse, it's something that's usually quite alien to me.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I'll pick that up instead. I've never had much interest in the Batman scene, but the seemingly endless amounts of positive reviews and user feedback about these games have made me curious.

I've handily omitted the crap ones...or perhaps you would disagree. The promo page can be found here, anyhow: http://www.gog.com/promo/rebellion_bullseye

"Just found this note, slid under our office door! Looks like someone is very upset."
Then a picture of a ransom-type note saying "Gamersgate. This is a warning. Stop what you're doing or else..."
Not all that exciting really, though it's nice to see alternate distribution models (particularly for games without a demo)
