Borderlands is £2.99 on Greenman Gaming. (http://www.greenmangaming.com/games/shooter/borderlands/) They also have a Paradox sale on (http://www.greenmangaming.com/promo/paradox/). Includes Magicka and its DLC, Hearts of Iron, Europa Universalis, Mount and Blade, Penumbra, Victoria and other stuff. Which of the Magicka DLCs are most worthwhile?
Vietnam's the most substantial by a wide margin.

Gamersgate having their summer sale, it's... not really that good. Most of the Paradox catalogue is at least 50% off though. I'm gonna get me some Pride Of Nations. I missed it last week as I didn't really want a Paradox-published game on Steam, since patches have usually been a bit slow I hear.
Daily deal there is pretty neat: Victoria complete pack for £7.20 (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DDB-VICCP/victoria-collection-pack-bundle). That includes the original game + expansion, and Vicky 2 + the few bits of fluff DLC. Not shabby!
Darkest Hour (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-DHHOIG/darkest-hour-a-hearts-of-iron-game) for £1.99 (or insert your local price here) looks like the best deal of the newer Paradox stuff here. From what I read from the fans this one seems to be the best HoI experience of the series? I've dabbled a bit in HoI 2 Complete and can see the appeal but never got far enough up the learning curve before other games pulled me away, and could see the need for a better map at higher res which you get in Darkest Hour. For that price, what the hell...
If you don't have EUIII then worth grabbing Chronicles at that price or wait to see if goes on daily deal.
The rest of it, yeah nothing to get excited about, it all seems to be on sale discount somewhere or other, most weeks.

Are the Commander: Conquest of the Americas DLC's worth having? I have a retail copy of the base game which registered on Steam, will the DLC's from Gamersgate work with either the base retail install or the Steam version?
Shattered Horizon, £3.75 on Steam. Worth it? Is there anyone out there still playing?

The Colonial Navy pack is just odds & ends you can comfortably play without. The extra resources are welcome, bread being mildly interesting since it's for inter-colony trade, but otherwise it's a light add-on. I'd toss it in the cart if I had blue coins and was half-drunk. The Pirate one I've yet to play with, but it seems more substantial.
Best approach with Steam is to always assume outside expansions are incompatible. However, you may be able to register the retail key on GamersGate.

This might be a moot point given the hella love for Paradox on these forums, but is it worth picking up Crusader Kings Complete on GamersGate for $9.98?
I'm a fan of the whole grand strategy thing, but this would be my first Paradox title. For $10 it's not going to be a huge gamble, but I'd love some input.

Yes, definately! First Paradox strategy I played and I've heard many say it's the best entry point for the rest. Just do yourself a favour and find a decent series of tutorial videos on youtube because the game itself lacks a tutorial :P

If you're already into Grand Strategy (??) then I guess you know you like this sort of thing, but both Paradox games I've played (Crusader Kings and Victoria 2) have bounced off me completely. Not the kind of "oh, this is complex! I better learn some stuff!" bouncing, but just more like "Fuck off. Don't play this. Go away." I was surprised at how little there was to actually do.
YMMV!
Also, Brink is $20 physical on Amazon, in the US at least. Today only!

I am very fond of CK. Definitely worth a punt but it might be worth waiting until the end of the week to see if it comes up in a daily deal.
Then you won't make sadfaces like I did, having bought Pride of Nations for £7.50 yesterday and it now being bundled with some DLC for £6. Gah.
I was surprised at how little there was to actually do.
It always seems that way in the beginning. You have to keep at it, for it takes a while to realize you're actually monitoring any number of things going on silently (or not) in the background.
Well, except with Victoria 2.

Yeah, get Batman, a very entertaining game.
Also the Humbre Indie Bundle (http://www.humblebundle.com/) might be considered a bargain. Too bad I own almost all the games (minus Cogs and Hammerfight). I know I should not speculate with charity, but didn't they give away the previous bundles too to people who payed above average in last year's sale?

With HIB2, I think they gave away all HIB1 games to those who had purchased at any price prior to a certain point, and once that was announced, to anyone who paid above the average price. So there could be advantage to buying early, though there was nothing like that in the Frozenbyte pack.

There is a tutorial if I remember correctly in the game, but it barely scratches the surface of the game's complexity, more like a controls tutorial and basic menus.
The 148 page manual is definitely worth browsing through while you wait for the game to download.
A much better vault of information can be found on the paradox EU3 Forum
http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?323-Europa-Universalis-III
Also I have learned to be a better EU3 player by watching some let's play...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vioSrK2uRo

Has anybody played this enough to recommend it? It's hard to go wrong at that price point, but I played King Arthur and the tactical game play just wasn't tight enough for me to get hooked. I'll probably get it anyways, if anybody is up for some multiplayer matches.

Lugaru
Vizati
and Crystal Towers 2
the bundle is 33$, normally 97$ with 10$ going to charity, they also say there is a money back guarantee and the deal ends in two days. there is a little link at the top of the page which says that you can earn 10$ credit for referring friends to the site, so I guess you might be able to get the bundle for 22$, but I don't really know if that would work.

X-Com hasn't really aged, mostly because nothing else has really taken it on. If you have any experience with tactics games, the battles will be fairly intuitive. The global strategy will be harder, but I'm sure an hour of play with a couple throwaway games will set you up. Basically you want to keep the world governments happy and funding you, research the alien stuff you find, and manufacture the stuff your research discovers. Here's a decent wiki (http://www.ufopaedia.org/index.php?title=Main_Page).
Also, the original 2 are
HARD.
MOTHER.
FUCKERS.
You WILL go against an alien force that will mind control your dudes, have them fire rockets into a crowd of your own soldiers, and then lie down on their own grenades. You WILL have soldiers turned into zombies. You WILL die.

I hate to disappoint anyone but Precursors has just gone back up in price to £9.97 / 50% discount. It most definitely was £2.50, 20 minutes ago! I can only think that some screw ups must have been made on discounts when it first went up.

I'm wondering if this sale is simply rotating price cock ups. I just got Railroads! for 64p which I don't think was there when I looked earlier. I too missed Syberia by taking the time out to post it here. That'll teach me to be helpful. Both it and Lume are now more sensible prices. The first Jagged Alliance was still sub 50p a few minutes ago.
Tropico 3 and Tropico reloaded as a pack is currently £3.99.

I reckon they'd make the developers and publishers more money by staying at the original low prices for a few days instead of correcting them.
The likes of Precursors or Xenus II would sell a craptonne more copies at sub $5 than they would at $15. And their JA2 Gold sale price is now not much less than it is on GOG at full price, daft.
Glad a grabbed Xenus II when I did anyway.

Only available in US&Canada, like most games in Impulse. It's getting worse and worse as big US based companies (Gamestop, Gamefly) keep buying digital distributors.

And, to make it even worse, Drakensang is a German-developed game owned by a German publisher. There's no distribution deal for the UK, so the only way we can get it is to import. My copy cost about £18 from Amazon UK, and it's an imported copy from the BeNeLux region. Sadly, we can't get the expansion for it, but the US can. It's a shambles, but for once it's not GameStop/Impulse's fault. ValuSoft have the rights to distribute it in the US and Canada, not in the UK.
But I do wish Impulse would hide games we can't get. It's irritating to see a game you want, but then find out it's not available in the UK.

Yeah, I bought The Dark Eye off Impulse a few weeks ago and most of the items in their version of a "You might aslo be interested in..." section were things they weren't actually willing to sell me. They can tell where I am when I try to view the game page itself, they really need to use that information in the advertisement selection and deal announcements they send out.

The Dark Eye is the name of the ruleset ;) Drakensang is the first game's name.
But I agree. I think GamersGate needs to do something similar with their site, as some sale games aren't actually on sale for me. I was perplexed by them the other day because they said Dragon Age 2 was their deal of the day or something similar, but upon checking for myself, the game was at £30. How odd.

Everyone: get Darkest Hour so you can play Kaiserreich, and also get Arsenal of Democracy for just regular HoI2. Also, get EU3: Complete and both expansions for £6ish (since Chronicles isn't up for sale).
The sprite packs can be safely ignored. Victoria 1 is better than Victoria 2, but a lot less recent an engine so expect it to run in a tiny window. Victoria 2 is still partially broken but at least it's playable, unlike launch, and the Divergences mod makes it arguably worth £6.

This is an odd question, but since I "own" Brink for the free weekend, do I get access to the free DLC, or do I have to actually buy the game to get Agents of Change? It's not a huge deal, as I'm already getting the chance to play the game for free, but I hear the two new maps are actually some of the best the game has seen so far.
Try going to the DLC page in the store and installing it. If it works, the license might be bound to your account permanently in the event that you buy the game. If not, uh...well, it didn't hurt to try.

I started installing Brink earlier for the free weekend and, when I exited another game this evening, the steam update news window opened saying "new content for your game" and advertising the Brink dlc. So it is very possible that it ties it to your account during the free weekend.

It's greatly improved. On release 7 hours in I hit a bug that corrupted my save. Went back to the game last week and after putting 42ish hours into it I've only had it crash on me maybe... 3 times, and no other bugs.
It saves pretty often, every time you hit a load screen, so the few crashes aren't that bad. Just be handy with the f5 key :P

Personally, I think it's not too bad. I'd say New Vegas' bugs tend to manifest themselves as visual ones (Such as enemies falling through the floor, getting stuck in the floor, flying away when you shoot them, etc) rather than gameplay bugs. Obviously some quests do bug, but the patches over the past half a year+ have really helped in that regard. It does still crash every so often for me, but thankfully it isn't into Fallout 3's habit of blue screening rather than crashing.

Fair enough. I never had any technical difficulties with the GOG version, so if it was a technical issue, it may be fixed. Here's a Heroes III HD mod (https://sites.google.com/site/heroes3hd/). I've never used it.
ALSO:
Spotted on Green Man Gaming: Dracula 3: Path of the Dragon (http://www.greenmangaming.com/games/adventure/dracula-3-path-of-the-dragon/) for ~$8. I have some huge post about it somewhere on the old forums, but here's the short version:
It's a first-person panning point-and-click adventure game.
It's 1920. You're a priest appointed by the Vatican to investigate if a recently deceased nurse in a small Transylvanian town is appropriate for canonization (the church is trying to build support in the area, and thinks a local saint could go far.)
You arrive in a small community still in the ruins of the Great War and begin your investigation.
That's all I'll say about the story, which is excellent. It's the rare first-person adventure with a clearly defined protagonist and characters you can speak with (the voice acting is excellent). It's also one of the very few adventures I've played which has a plot that doesn't cover itself with campy humor or pulp adventure. It's a slow, deliberate, very academic game (it contains the full text of both Dracula and the Latin Bible), that traces the history of vampirism in Europe and touches on the historical situation that lit off two world wars.
It is also a ball-breakingly hard game. It's hard for the right reasons, though -- logical challenges. You only very rarely wonder where to go or what you should be doing, you're always staring at a puzzle (usually armed with a pile of books to consult) and trying to figure out how to solve it. You never have to "click everything on everything."
If you like adventure games, European history, traditional vampire tales, academic research, or puzzles, you'll find something to like in the game. It's my favorite adventure game of the last five years at least.
EDIT: Oh yeah, the #3! It's totally unlike the other 2, just a lame attempt to brand it as a franchise. The story is unconnected and the gameplay is different. So don't worry about not playing the previous games -- in fact, you shouldn't.

I did a bit of googling of Hardwar after the last time it was on sale and got the impression that the code was available free from a modder's site with the dev's blessing, but not 100% sure on that? Absolutely fantastic game. Worth whatever money they're asking. Don't look at those screenshots they're showing, as those are from the horrible real-time-strategy bits in the game. The space bits and choose-your-own-adventure bits are a lot better, even though the English in the game is mediocre.

The Oil Blue - an indie action puzzler in which you fiddle with the knobs and woozits of oil drilling machines in an effort to get the most oil to sell under a timelimit - is $8 on Beamdog (http://www.beamdog.com/products/the-oil-blue). There's a demo on the developer's site. (http://www.vertigogaming.net/game/oilblue)
I played the demo and liked it, so I bought the game and I like it. Good atmosphere (sounds, displays for the machines) and simple but fun mechanics (mostly based around managing a whole pile of oil machines efficiently, and deciding when to sell the oil (the price fluctuates, so you can make a nice profit if you sell at the right time)).
Check it out.

Considering I'm playing through STALKER Shadows of Chernobyl AND have Call of Pripyat to go through, is there any point to me getting FO3/NV? If so, which one is more recommended?
Giaddon
07-08-2011, 05:37 PM
1) Probably, depending on your tolerance for shooting things in a desolate environment
2) I actually prefer FO3. It's more open, and I liked the story more. NV has a railroaded first bit, way too many weapons/ammo/fiddly bits, and a dull story. On the other hand It does have much more interesting companions and story elements (i.e., backstory and places), and hardcore mode is cool.

Aside from containing guns and happening to take place in (very different) post apocalyptic environments, the two series you've mentioned have nothing in common.

I much prefer NV, and I think it went a long way to correct what I didn't like about FO3.
The biggest difference for me is the coherence and presentation of the world. FO3 is your cliche nuclear wasteland - nothing growing, junk scattered everywhere and everyone still living as scavengers 200 years after the bombs fell. There's no history to it and it doesn't really make much sense if you think about it. There are interesting locations in both games and you could argue that some of FO3's are more memorable by way of being weird and incongruous, but in FO3 they are specks of light in a dull wasteland while NV gives a better impression of a living world (and fits in with established Fallout backstory, if you're interested). Different factions make their presence felt, there's always signs of people trying to build rather than simply survive, and of course Vegas itself is far bigger and busier than any of the huddled settlements in FO3.
NV is also more fun to play mechanically. FO3 has wonky shooting, and while it's still not great in NV they've tweaked it to make it more satisfying.

Fair enough. From what I knew, I thought they'd be more similarities. That is good to know.

NV has a lot of quests and a very populated and developed "wasteland," it's more true to the spirit (though of course not the form) of the original Fallout games.
FO3 is more of a genuine wasteland, with very little civilization and very few people. It's more sparse on quests, but heavier on places to explore and things to discover. In vanilla, I'd agree that it's the weaker of the two, but with the Wanderer's Edition mod I think it becomes the stronger. This makes ammo harder to find, requires you to sleep, eat, and drink, and turns it into a true survival game. This makes exploration more worthwhile, and drives you to discover all the fascinating stuff littered around the gameworld. It's still very desolate and very lonely, but then that's exactly what I want out of a post-apocalyptic game.
For me, personally, FO3 with Wanderer's Edition is the superior experience, but that's more about what I want from a game like this than inherent quality. NV is a very solid open world game with lots of interesting locations, factions, and a ton of quests. If a somewhat more guided experience appeals to you, you'll want to go with NV.
Edit: I keep seeing complaints about "mechanical issues" in FO3. I don't recall any, myself, but I suspect that's because Wanderer's reworks quite a few things and corrects any significant problems with the game.

Fallout 3 is a Bethesda game through and through. It's superficially Fallout-ish but other than that, it's closer to Oblivion etc than Fallout. Big game but paper thin in depth, with little to care about or be interested in. It's also mechanically fairly broken, most notably in the way that your decisions regarding how your character levels has zero impact after the very beginning because it's insanely easy to just max out most things anyway. Dull, hollow game that fails in most of the things the original games excelled in.
New Vegas on the other hand is what Fallout 3 should have been. It still has some of the clunkiness of the engine but it actually feels like a Fallout game - the characters, locations and quests are interesting and memorable, some of the decisions you make really feel important and the game ties itself with the first two pretty well. Plus what Kelron said - where FO3 was a big blotch of static emptiness where people were more than happy to sit on their asses in ruined shacks for a few hundred years, New Vegas feels like a genuine world where civilisation has actually tried to move past the nuclear bombs, making the atmosphere and world feel so much stronger and alive. It's just a great, rich experience. It also fixes quite a lot of the mechanical issues F3 had, eg your levelling choices actually have importance again.
So get New Vegas if you're only going to get one.

shopto have just launched their new download service, with a bunch of stuff @1.99 (although well hidden for some reason) - including the 'being advertised on RPS right now' pirates of black cove...
Just a warning regarding shopto. I ordered Longest Journey and Dreamfall as digital downloads on Saturday having seen them in Lewie's Bargain Bucket but got no links to download them - just a confirmation I had been charged. After chasing several times in the last 48hrs, I've now been told they are 'no longer available' and have been refunded.
How a digital download can no longer be available is beyond me. It would appear that they either had such demand that they decided not to fulfill all of the orders (because they were only 98p each) or just used these kind of deals to drive traffic to the site and for publicity.
Either way, I won't be using them again and I would advise others to steer clear too.

I’m going to assume the broken ending (“I cannot enter that gas-filled room because… err, this is your destiny!”) was fixed in a patch for the normal game and having the expansions isn’t necessary, but perhaps someone could back me up on that, and then maybe highfive me just because I crave any form of physical contact.
If not, then the GOTY edition is definitely the way to go. I’d get it regardless; it’s even cheaper on Amazon than the regular version.

Yeah, I was tired when I wrote that. Dunno why I thought something like that would get cheaper. Shame Bulletstorm isn't on sale greater. I've seen it at £15 at retail for quite some time. Regardless, on sleeping on it, backlog too big. I shall wait for it to be as cheap down the line...

I forgot to pre-order it, bought it on release day for a staggering £35 (Limited Edition, of course), and then a few weeks later I saw it for £20. Arrrrrrrgh.

Just been having a quick browse through GamersGate's deals, and these caught my eye. Apologies if they've already been mentioned:
Trine £1.69 (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-TRINE/trine)
The Undergarden £1.75 (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-TUG/the-undergarden)
Saint's Row 2 £1.74 (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-SAINTS2/saints-row-2)

Trine £1.69 (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-TRINE/trine)
Excellent game, easily worth that and more.
Saint's Row 2 £1.74 (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-SAINTS2/saints-row-2)
Excellent game, but one hell of a shitty port. £1.74 is a steal, however.
Couple of questions:
Is Section 8 worth buying in the daily deal? Not so much is the game good, but are there servers full enough to be worthwhile to buy it?
If so, are the map packs worth it? (If there are few full servers, there will be more players without the DLC than with....)
Gratuitous Space Battles and DLC is 75% off. Assuming the base game and Galactic Conquest are the things to buy, are the other 4 DLC packs necessary? Which of them is the best?

Section 8: Prejudice has about 1,500 active players right now, because of the sale. Before the sale that number was probably a couple dozen. If you pick it up today you'll probably have a week or so of high-quality online man shooting before the playerbase tanks again (my guess).

I'm on the fence for Section 8:Prejudice. As I'd want it for the SP campaign (5 hrs long) I think I'll wait till the Xmas/BF/TG sale where it will likely be cheaper. To much other fps to play right now.
must resist... just because it's cheap doesn't mean I need it...! :) :)

witcher 2 for cheaps.€22/$30, I can't see my UK price due to I think IP detection errors. But figuring $30 usd in gbp is £18. 11 according to Google that's a hood ball park.

If you don't have most of them, that's a great deal!

GOG has The Witcher 2 for $29.99, along with JA 1&2, Realms of Arkania1+2&3, Battle Island Platinum and Masters of Orion all at 40% off until Monday, August 22 GMT 3:59am. This may not be the best price for The Witcher 2, but CD Projekt gets all the money, and it has a load of bonus content.

Just a heads-up: I recently ordered Brink (Special Edition) via the GAME online shop (I live in Germany). Since it was really cheap (8GBP) and comes with two extra skin packs this seemed like a really good deal. Today the game came with the mail. But there were no activation codes in the box, apart from one of the two skin packs. Not even for the main game.
So I just sent them a notification. Maybe this is all a misunderstanding. Maybe the box just looks as if it has been opened before. But if I don't get a pretty good reason for this, I'll be royally pissed. Anybody else ever got problems with GAME?

Yep, I had the exact same problem about 6 weeks ago. Good luck getting a key! After pestering Game they claimed they never encountered the problem before and said to contact the publishers. I sent emails to splash damage and Bethesda support every week for a month and didn't get a single acknowledgement they even recognized my problem.

What? This is just great. The "problem" is probably a guy over at GAME that nicks the cards from the boxes. Since I can't return the game now that it has been opened it seems like I am screwed. But thanks for the info, I'll get into contact with Splash Damage / Bethesda as soon as I get a reply from GAME. Even if I don't expect to get anything out of this.

Spiderweb's Avadon is out on Steam with surprisingly low price: 6,29 €. Compared to the original price it's definietly a bargain.

If you make any progress be sure to let me know! Also just out of curiosity, when you got your game was it shrink wrapped or just one of Game's crappy stickers? For me it was just the sticker :/

I messaged Lewie about this and he told me that he had heard similar things in the past about GAME. His advice was to pester GAME for a replacement, since the game came in an unsealed box. For further discussion, I opened a seperate thread on the forums.

this isn't a pc deal so apologies in advance. people who follow the console toy news will know that due to a consumer related ass kicking nintendo had to drop the price of the 3ds by about a third, however that price has been dropped even more by amazon so its £115 at the moment. again I will make my apologies, but thats a price drop of about a hundred pounds within less than a year of release so I figured it was worth pointing out in case anyone is interested.
Dawn of War II Complete Pack (and individual titles) are 50% off on Steam now.

It's cheap because its a dumb idea. A DS with more horse power would be fine, but they wasted 50% of the graphics power rendering 2 points of view. To be honest the DS lite was such a perfect design, changing anything was going to be questionable, the smartest upgrade was the XL, with the DSi coming a close second if just for the photograph and drawing app which was great for kids.

Since I had been gifted DoW2: Retribution Last Stand, it stacks up the 50% discount with the upgrade discount so I got 77% in total off upgrading to the full version and so only cost £8.50!

Noooooo not multiwinia! go play a good forgotten strategy game in multiplayer instead, sacrifice, one of the soldiers/faces/men of war play homeworld 1/2, company of heroes in a 4 vs 4 against AI, warcraft 3(try a tower defence map), starcraft(tower defence was pretty much born here), a small 1 vs 1 world in alpha centuri, reigicide in age of empires 2 (strong), Rome total war 2500 point battle (yes you can't field 20 elite units, that's the point) or red alert 2.
Just don't play multiwinia, buy it if you want to support the development of subversion, but don't play it.
Yes, go play a good forgotten strategy game. Like Multiwinia.

Absolutely horrific port but well worth the money.
If you're like me, you'll have to put up with over-sensitive controls, poor audio mixing and stuttering visuals, but it was still a good game.

I've played it for 28 hours and barely even touched the story
Imagine GTA without so much seriousness, but instead with character customisation and full co-op. You even see your character in all the cut-scenes, wearing whatever obscene clothing you wish
Definitely worth that money, worth quite a lot more, but if you are offended by slightly wonky controls and a mouseless menu system then stay away (though the menu is mouseless it is actually easier to use than many games which use the mouse, I find)

Yes and no. The game does reward you at certain points of the game for causing utter mayhem, and there are a variety of interesting side missions and minigames, but the game itself is shorter. It makes up for that in a number of ways, such as greater customisation (Of yourself and your vehicles), a deeper aspect to the gang warfare system and so forth.
In a way it's closer to GTA: SA than it is GTA IV. You've got to remember IV went for the realist direction, but SR2 goes for the Crazy As Shit direction.

Football Manager 2011 is going for $7.97 over at gametap. I can't vouch for the quality of the retailer, but it looks like it might just be a steam code. This might just be the right price for a FM virgin like myself to give it a try.
