Is anyone else seeing the original list price for Shogun 2 as $90, marked down to $15? That seems a little, insane, for the starting point.

I've seen that too. There must be something wrong with the discount as in the frontpage it says that the discounts are up to 75% off.

I'm not sure $15 is large for, what is it, 5 games? Granted, 5 older games, but he put Avadon up for $10. I don't know, this "cheap, disposable game" thing makes me uncomfortable on a fundamental level. Some games being that way is one thing, but it seems like the expectation, and increasingly the reality, is that they're all becoming that way.

He didn't charge that much more for Avadon on his own site, but as I seem to recall him saying at the time it's intentionally the shortest game he's ever done and intended to be his effort at a budget release. Could actually work out quite well for him, I could see people picking it up who wouldn't have before and it becoming a gateway to the rest of his catalogue.

As for Geneforge, given 5 is three years old at this point (and has already been in at least one Gamersgate sale) I don't really see a problem with it. Again, the game has probably sold as much as it's going to for his dedicated fans, dumping it in a budget collection on Steam is likely to get it out to people who would never have bought it otherwise. And again, that could be a really good thing for him since it will likely drive purchases of his other titles.

I don't think it's an expectation so much as a risk thing. There's only a limited number of people who would be willing to pay up the £30 for the full game without knowing they'd enjoy it, especially considering they rarely see mainstream coverage. In fact I think the demo kind of shoots itself in the foot on that score; because it's so generous you've changed the question of whether someone would enjoy it into whether what's left after the demo is worth the asking price.

Is it a playable game yet?

I personally think so, its been improved a lot by patches and the developers have promised continued support.
I have 30 hours played so far, mainly in the quick missions, but some elements are still not working. I'd recommend it, but only if you are aware that it is not 100% finished, that the developers are still working on a number of issues.

Yes, in the "you have no choice but to register it on Steam, as it's locked to that service" sense.

IT's kind of a ludicrous deal, though. They seem to have marked Shogun 2 up to 89 dollars so that they can advertise it as 83% off.

It's basically Shogun 2 for 15 dollars. Which is an OK deal (probably the cheapest it's ever been), but it's still not technically 83% off the 50 dollars the game usually sells for (like you would assume).

It's kind of a shameless and obvious marketing ploy. Did they really think people would be so excited by seeing the 83% off that they wouldn't notice?

Nice marketing idea. Thanks for the information. But I tell as you mention the basic idea behind this but many people will go for a discounted prices. Because they may not have an idea of the real prices and what they look is they are getting a 83% off.

They? GamersGate don't decide the pricing. If Sega put it up for $89, then that's their choice.

For me, though, GamersGate UK is showing Shogun 2 as having a list price of £29.95, which is about right.

Sales flow dictates you won't see a BF3 sale above 10% until March, pre order people would get reduced satisfaction if they got undercut.

Retail is a different story, especially in the UK.

The Settlers 6 (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-SETTLERS6/the-settlers-rise-of-an-empire) - £3 (No expansion available on GamersGate)
The Settlers 7 Gold Edition (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-S7DGE/settlers-7-deluxe-gold-edition) - £9 (UbiDRM)
The Settlers Complete Bundle (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DDB-SETTLERSCC/the-settlers-complete-collection-bundle) - £12 (Settlers 7 Gold, Settlers 5, Settlers 6. No expansions for the previous two on GG)

The Settlers 7 DLC is also on sale, but as I write this, DLC Pack 3 Complete currently isn't on offer, much to my annoyance (As it stands, it's more expensive than The Settlers 7 Gold).

Lego Batman and Batman: Arkham Asylum GotY are also still on sale there for just over £5 a piece, and getting one will net you 10% off a pre-order of Arkham City, whilst both will get you 20% off.

Steam has 75% off AI War (http://store.steampowered.com/app/40400). $5 for the core game or $7.49 for the game and expansions. I tried the demo and couldn't get past the clunky UI, I'm not a 4X gamer at all though - haven't even delved into SotS yet which I got when it was cheap - so maybe it isn't clunky at all if you're experienced with the genre.

I know there are some fans around here, hence the mention. A couple of weeks ago I probably would have bought it, but all the talk lately about not buying games just because they're cheap has convinced me to hold off on more buyings.

From an interface standpoint, AI War is very much an RTS. It plays a lot like a 4X game on a macro level, but was designed to control in a way familiar to any RTS player (with some nice modifications to eliminate as much need for micro as possible).

I'd say no. The SP isn't bad but it isn't really good either. Multiplayer is where the game shines and you don't need to invest hours and hours of training either. We have a very active RPS ARMA 2 community that's very open to newcomers and doesn't expect any competence at all. See the ARMA 2 Thread in the Gaming Groups Subforum or check herosquad.org

I have a friend with a very similar rig to yours (He has some quad core instead... I'm unsure of the clock speed). If I use the performance he got as a judgement, it would be a definite pass. The game looked awful even after you let the textures pop in. He also told me he had to tweak it heavily to even get it to run the way it did. Really unfortunate... That rig should have no problem running that game...

Right, because too much of that definitely wouldn't be an indication of an incipient industry crash. No sir.

Edit: To be clear, a game that came out and was received poorly doing this is obviously not a problem, I just take issue with the notion that this is something we want to see with regularity.

A brand-new-ish game that was received somewhat poorly, mind. I'm sure they didn't sell as many copies as they'd hoped. That's been the pattern a few times lately - hyped game disappoints, goes on sale early. The highly-rated ones stay at 90-100% of the base price.

Stop making disappointing games, say I.

the game itself is all right, it just fails to be compelling in any way

id has a track record of making games that look great but are total clunkers

i was angry about it because they had killed an entire game they had almost finished because it 'looked a lot like doom 3' and i thought "oh, maybe they've changed their ways."

and then it turns out that they can't quite break out of their habit of boring gameplay

it looks nice though! except for the parts that don't work.

EYE is still a bit of a way from being fun. It's seriously ambitious with such a variety of skills to choose from that it is overwhelming. Unfortunately, most choices are so badly compromised by bugs that the game is unplayable. Stealth is rubbish - a single shot draws all enemies within a kilometer and enemies can spot you from miles regardless of the direction they're facing or your vertical advantage. Weapons are moderately bland and enemy AI is worse.

EYE is one of those games that could be great, if in a years time they patch it so mightily that the mechanics play out as intended.

As someone mentioned, sometimes Steam mentions the wrong daily deal. Once, not long ago, it said Hydrophobia in the news page but it was something else.

Also, sometimes I think they're region-restricted, so whilst one region may get it another might not. That's very rare, though.

Armageddon is a good 3rd person shooter, that I think a lot of people really missed out on because it wasn't an open world. I've played it a lot and would definitely recommend it at that price.

It's bloated and any nVidia driver above 270.66 - at the moment, I believe - is likely to cause issues. The next set of drivers is said to fix a number of issues with The Settlers 7, but the game itself is still a bit bloated.

It's certainly not bad for £9, though. The servers very rarely, if ever, go down these days. I've put a number of hours into the game and I've only ever had two instances of connection problems. It doesn't boot you out, though, but simply pauses the game until the connection comes back. It allows you to save, too.

Via SavvyGamer (http://savygamer.co.uk/) (which you should all have as a bookmark): Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box (http://savygamer.co.uk/2011/11/13/burnout-paradise-the-ultimate-box-pc-free/) is free if you get it through the Origin client. Seems to be UK only, but if you enter the code "PARADISE" along with your address (or a VPN as someone has commented) when you get to the checkout, it goes from the low £5 to free. Which is lower.

Burnout Paradise is a fantastic open world racing game that controls superbly and is incredibly fun to play. Lots of things to do. Indirect predecessor to Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit being made by Criterion, who obviously used Paradise as a foundation for HP. Highly recommended. And hey, it's free.

It's cheaper on GamersGate, £3.75 vs Steam's £5.10 - And I believe the deal will last longer.

GamersGate have just put on a fairly big indie sale. Frozen Synapse is down to £5 (£7.40ish for the soundtrack bundle), Fate of the World DLC is at varying prices, the A. Typical RPG is just about 60p and everyone's favourite, Bastion, is £5.75.

Here is their offers page (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/offers) - Some very cheap games there.

Worth a mention that Din's Curse is 50% off and isn't on discount very often. Great game, I've enjoyed this more than any Diablo-esque RPG since, well Diablo. Demon War expansion is not essential but if you find you like the base game you'll want to buy it anyway, however it's only $9.99 full price from Soldak's site, Gamersgate's £ pricing is off on that one.

I don't like Oblivion. Maybe if we didn't have Morrowind and now Skyrim to compare it to, it would be more interesting. But it really is the weak link in the series, mods help but I don't think it's worth the effort when you can play one of the others instead.

Speaking as someone who adored Mercenaries, I found Just Cause 2 very pretty, but unbelievably dull and repetitive. I think it must depend on your temperament, as quite a few people seem to love it. Try the demo, the entire game is pretty much just that in different environments, don't buy it expecting anything more.

Juan Carlo
17-11-2011, 01:04 PM
Same here. JC2 is a game that's incredibly fun for the first 4 or 5 hours. But then less and less fun the more you play and discover how very "same-ish" the world and missions all are.

Lots of people seem to love it, though, so maybe I'm in the minority.

The JG Man
17-11-2011, 01:22 PM
If anyone does get JC2, and I recommend that they do, don't ignore the main missions. They range from above-average to utterly bat-shit insane and are all the better for it. The last set of missions in particular are lovingly absurd. The rest of the game is very fun for mucking about, so if you're the kind of person who can do that, definitely go for it.

With regards to the Anniversary bundle and games I have played...

-Aquaria seems to be well loved, but I found it utterly boring and gave up after a clueless hour and a bit. It looks pretty, I guess.
-BIT.TRIP RUNNER is a weird platformer game in that it's not. It's actually a rhythm game, one that looks good and is pretty darn hard, but satisfying in completion. I'd find it hard to recommend, but if you like rhythm games, do look into it.
-Gish's controls I found unwieldy and promptly abandoned it after fluking my way past the first level.
-Half-Life 2 is Half-Life 2, to the degree that it is really two halves put together, making the name incorrect as it should simply be Whole or Full Life.
-Super Meat Boy was my GOTY last year. Absolutely fantastic platforming, where the challenges may be hard, but as hard as they get they are as satisfying to complete. A whole crap load of content that should keep an eager platformer enthusiast going for well over 10 hours. Complete with incredibly well fitting and entirely great soundtrack, I cannot recommend this enough for those brave enough to sustain long lengths of obscenity hurling.
-VVVVVV is a fun short, but highly replayable, platformer. Not as hard as SMB, but definitely challenging at times. It has a lot of character and love along with a great soundtrack too. My only fault would be with slightly loose controls, which another person may write as a bonus, although I prefer the consistency offered in SMB.
-World of Goo is a really cool puzzle game that has a fun aura to it. Decent length, good difficulty curve. Recommendable to all.

So, recommended in order: SMB, VVVVVV, World of Goo > BIT.TRIP Runner, Aquaria, Gish. You already own HL2.

No awesome bargains to report here, more like the opposite: An enquiry about a deal.

The weekend is looming on the horizon and I am about to cave in and buy Skyrim, preferably as a download (no waiting for delivery of the game, possibly from another country). Now I had a look around for the best price and came to the - preliminary - result that greenmangaming currently is the place with the cheapest price. They ask 31GBP for orders from the UK and 39,97EUR (34,24GBP) from Germany (where I live). In theory, I could get someone to data-smuggle me the code for the UK-price but calculating in the paypal fees I end up nearly at the same price that I would pay if I'd ordered from Germany.

I don't want anybody to do my work and go out and search for better deals but in case anybody stumbled across a better price (from a trustworthy source) I would really appreciate it if he or she would post a hint or link in here.

The expansion is just a love letter to the original game anyway, you will get plenty of random awesome from just the base game.

It's easily worth £1.50 - Some fairly good graphics and average-to-moderate gameplay. It's not perfect, far from it, and it's got a scarily high footprint for what it is (5.5GB almost, I believe), but for £1.50 I say go for it.

Not sure if this is a bargain as such but PC Gamer UK are giving away King Arthur: the Role-playing wargame for free with their Christmas issue. I've heard O.K. things about it and will probably download it to give the game a go at some point.

King Arthur: The Role-Playing Wargame is very fun, a more RPG-ish take on the Total War formula. It isn't perfectly optimized, and the campaign isn't always fair, though. I recommend it to anyone considering it - I had great fun with it.

I really liked King Arthur. It's like Total War with magic, although the mechanics aren't quite as refined as Total War. Plus it's very off balance at times. I played on "very hard," for example, and it was absurdly easy once I realized that there were times in between missions when the enemy would stop attacking you until you triggered the next mission. Since there are experience rewarding locations on the map, I just stuck all my heroes in there and skipped ahead 30 turns untill they were all uber-powerful. It kind of broke the game for me as I was able to build up 3 massively powerful armies in no time and crush all opposition for the rest of the game.

Plus, some people complain about the over-powered archers, although I actually liked them.

I just played the Anomaly demo on steam last night, oh my god why don't I own this game! Buying it in a minute, but before let me tell you why, If I ignore Tower Defences existence the description gets harder but more meaningful.

Anomaly is a Strategy game where your units don't stop, you can only direct them by way of junctions, you can pause the game at any time, but real time positioning is still fundamental, its very much a real time game with pausing, the pausing is easily accessed and attached to nearly every action you do (bar moving), this lends it as much sense of rush as you want it.

edit: oh, 'nd its on sale for £3 and pennies

Semi-bargain on GamersGate now. A new D&D collection, Neverwinter Nights Complete (http://www.gamersgate.co.uk/DD-DDNWNC/dungeons-and-dragons-neverwinter-nights-complete), just went up. It's £15 on sale (57% off), and is probably only just a bargain at that price.

NWN + 2 Exps + Kingmaker
NWN2 + 2 Exps + Mysteries of Westgate

Kingmaker contains three extra premium modules, but many are still unavailable.
Mysteries of Westgate is a slightly bigger premium module, developed by... uh... some studio I've never heard of.

I don't think it's that good a deal, though. NWN Complete (minus Kingmaker) is easily available for a pittance on Amazon.

Seems the Indieroyale people have ditched the count down which lead to their site crashing and are now offering "pre-orders" for 3.99 of the upcoming bundles.

http://www.indieroyale.com/

Of course you are pre-ordering without knowing what is going to be in the bundle, so asking people to pay 4 dollars without knowing what they are buying seems like kind of a strange marketing concept to me. Who would do that?

They are also upping the minimum payment from 2 dollars to 3 and announced that they aren't going to have one every two weeks like they originally planned.

I wonder if they have been less successful than they had hoped? They certainly never seem to do humblebundle numbers, anyway.

Well it's not like they're going to stick you with 4 copies of Daikatana (I'm using Daikatana as an example of a game widely considered to be shit, I don't need to hear why one you thinks it's a masterpiece and how wrong I am about it). It's probably a pretty safe bet, unless you already own a whole lot of indie games, because you might end up with $4 worth of doubles.

Given there is no charity element, minimum price and the regularity I doubt they were expecting to shift those kind of numbers. This seems more like tweaking of the formula than anything more grand. The ditching of a countdown means they can't really have a regular schedule and fortnightly was ambitious from the start. Once they've chipped away at older stuff it assumed 2 games a week being released that were good enough and wanted to be included. The whole pre order thing is a bit odd but I suspect many people will see it as a lucky dip at that price.

It will most likely include Really Big Sky, according to their open letter, in my opinion: http://www.indieroyale.com/newsletter/80. And games around the "space" theme, I believe.

Besides, like they describe, the point for them is that a lot of people are rushing to buy it, as soon as it's available. They suffered heavy server overloads during the last one. So the idea is to start already the treatment for people who would buy it anyway (like me), not particularly to make a marketing operation around it, I think.

Distant Worlds is something of a Europa Universalis game in space. It's slow, real time, and incredibly huge. It also has a ton of automated systems to simulate private industry and other aspects of your empire that you do not directly control. In general it's a hell of a game, and the expansion adds a ton of good stuff. It's getting another expansion this fall, btw, which is going to significantly enhance and expand the game and add a substantial character system as well.

I've not played a lot of Armada 2526, but it looks and sound intriguing. It's designed by the lead designer of some of the older TW games and seems to share a lot of their design philosophy. Turn based empire building, real time combat resolution, with a lot of novel ideas (psionic weapons, for one) thrown in that frequently don't crop up in 4X games. The expansion adds multiplayer (something Distant Worlds still lacks) and a pile of interesting additional features and systems.

If you haven't played STALKER yet, I would really recommend it over Metro 2033. Metro really made me mad when they introduced the most badass throwing knives ever right before they revealed that once you get caught, the enemies are always alert to your presence. I was really hoping to stealth my way through the game but it just got too frustrating.

Metro really made me mad when they introduced the most badass throwing knives ever right before they revealed that once you get caught, the enemies are always alert to your presence. I was really hoping to stealth my way through the game but it just got too frustrating.

Metro just feels like a very pretty corridor shooter, whereas STALKER makes me feel like a lone survivor in a terrifying wasteland.

I beat STALKER several times.

Looks like putting Savygamer in my RSS feed is about to pay off. They claim that Direct2drive will give you 20% off your entire order on friday. I thought this might be a good time to order the new Serious Sam game, Skyrim is still a bit on the expensive side. For Serious Sam they've really buckled down on the regional pricing; on the US site it says "Available in {nearly every country in NA, SA and SEA}" and on the UK site "Available worldwide except for {nearly every country in NA, SA and SEA}" Unfortunate, but a 20% discount on the UK price is still a very good deal for me indeed.

If you then let the subscription lapse you will be a 'premium' player which means you can join supergroups, send messages but will only have two character slots as opposed to... about 120 when VIP

Thanks for the info. Distant Worlds sounds like my kind of game, as I am more a fan of the empire management aspect of 4x games than the combat (Love GalCiv 2, but not so much SotS), and this game sounds like it just loads that stuff on. I think I'll buy the base game, then see if I like it enough to go for the expansions.

Distant Worlds sounds great, but the pricing is hard to swallow. I know they're selling niche strategy games and I don't expect Steam sale prices, but they want £53 for the full package (I don't like missing out on expansions). I'm not sure I'd be prepared to pay that even if there was a demo.

A gold edition would definitely be a good idea, now that there are two sequentially dependent expansions in the mix. A demo would be helpful too, but I'm not sure how one makes a demo for a game like that. I guess you could time-limit it, but then you'd never see the more interesting parts of the tech trees and such. Maybe something limited to a single faction/map size/etc.

Code Force is a tiny development house, I'm sure part of it is a simple lack of resources too.

That's what I did. It's definitely more of an empire management game than anything else, pretty much the polar opposite of SotS (which I also happen to love).

The spiderweb games are 50% off on steam, which means you can get Geneforge 1-5 for 10 dollars right now. I'm currently playing through Geneforge 1 and it's the most RPG fun I've had in ages, so I thought I'd give them a plug.

Otherwise the only games I want from this sale are "Saints Row 2" and "Kings Bounty" and both are only 50% off right now. Hopefully they will be on a daily deal as I won't buy them unless they hit 75% off (steam sales have made me so cheap).

About SR2, I would recommend considering SR3 on ShopTo.net for 23gbp: http://www.shopto.net/DOWNLOAD/VIDEO%20GAMES/DWNLD28020-Saints%20Row%20the%20Third.html
Will probably run better than SR2 on PC, even. And it's really fun.

Under consideration from various current sales:

Close Combat: Cross of Iron from the Matrix sale, which would finish off my collection.
Two Worlds 2 GotY from Gamersgate, because I've been wanting it for some time.
Panzer Corps from the Matrix sale, because it's something I'd planned on getting myself for Christmas, but it's half off at the moment.

Already bought Distant Worlds: Legends, but then I'd have bought that with or without the sale.

On a separate note, Starflight 1 & 2 just went up on GOG. Starflight is a lesser-known classic, and the space game of my childhood. Great plot, great mechanics, this is one of the titles that really got me into serious gaming.

Anyone tried some of those space 4x games in the Matrix sale? Looking at Armada 2526 and Distant Worlds, but with the $30 price tag and no demo, I'm a bit hesitant to jump for it. Opinions from some veteran space 4x-ers who have played them would be helpful.

Edit: This ShowMeTheSales (http://www.showmethegames.com/sales.php) event has a couple of the Matrixgames titles for lower prices. Solium Infernum is also on there.

Distant worlds still way too high for me. But if you're interested in Armada 2526 it is £9.99 here: http://www.iceberg-shop.com/armada-2526.html?currency=GBP

Also Bulletstorm for £7.50 which I guess is as cheap as it's likely to go on Steam in this sale as well (£7.50 would be 75% off if it hits Steam Daily). I paid £10 in the last Gamersgate sale. PPPPPP is horrible! Because once you listen to it you get hooked and there is nothing else like it (ie. actually it is a great album, just to clarify). I adore it, the dlc is a nice slab of extra content too. Don't buy the deluxe though it's pointless you get all of the extras by playing the base game.

It's "not your fathers splinter cell" and the main campaign is kinda rubbish at times, but the Deniable ops (skirmish mode thing) and coop are worth the price admission a few times over.

I think they overdo it a little bit with the indie bundles. Apart from that the content isn't really great.

Well I think they also can highlight the fact that there really are tons of painfully mediocre indie games that have come from this recent boom in indie gaming. Yes, the are lots of good ones, but I also think there's a basic formula for an indie game now--to the point that it's becoming a bit stale.

The formula:

1. Identify some retro gameplay style (platformer is the most common, but others work too--8 bit RPGs, Zelda randomization, shmup, etc, etc)

2. Come up with a gimmick--or a "hook" which will give your game just enough of a twist to stand out (so, for example, Limbo's gimmick is its black and white aesthetics. Braid has a different gimmick each level. VVVVVVV's gimmick is its commadore 64 graphics and astounding difficulty, Cthulu's gimmick is that it's specifically designed to ape NES RPGs, "And yet it moves" had the rotating map, etc, etc)

3. If at all possible, add physics (not sure why, but almost every single indie game ever MUST have some sort of physics system to it--also usually physics based puzzles--if it is at all possible to implement physics in the game)

4. ......

5. Profit!

Of course I don't mean to shit on this formula as it has led to some great games (and alot of great games that break the formula). But it's also led to a shit ton of mediocrity as well (especially when it comes to indie shmups and indie physics, puzzle, platformers--which seem to be the most common and over done genres in the field. Although, Tower Defence is now on its way to becoming seriously over exposed as a genre as well).
