Heard about this on my drive to work (I was surprised to hear someone say "Final Fantasy 8" on the radio):

I think we can all agree the cover art is at least as good as any of the songs. =P

393

Obviously wars could be fought about what really belongs on that CD =P but of the songs I recognize, they made some choices I enjoy. =)

For example, Battlefield theme! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azq1Eia91gc

Most of the stuff looks pretty boring.

Also, why Oblivion and not Morrowind? Eh!?

Because, I think this is partially a "The Greatest Videogame Music of Relatively Recent Bestsellers Plus Some Obvious Throwbacks" CD ;)

Though not aggregiously so

How awful. I've got a large directory full of game music sitting on my computer and none of those games/songs are in it. It's full of modern day popular stuff and a few console "classics".

The hell?
It's london philharmonic orchestra. its the opposite of boring. like the end of the scale.

Yeah, but it *looks* boring because...well, because it's just music, there's not much to see.

No Theme of Laura (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LB7LZZGpkw)? For shame.

This made me notice one thing primarily; While I know it is Russian, the Tetris theme played by an orchestra makes it sound VERY Russian.

That is one disappointing track list. Angry Birds seriously? Where is Deus Ex Main Theme? There are a few decent ones, but on the whole, awful.

There are many dull and underwhelming choices in there. I'm surprised they didn't take the opportunity to slip a few obscurities in between the inevitable big names. One of the better Hitman 2 tunes would've been nice.

The Oblivion theme is, and note that I think Morrowind is a pretty crappy game, by far the worse one of the two games' themes.

Mario is pretty awesome, and no complaints about the Tetris. However, the BF2 theme sounds like... the BF theme (well, I'mnot sure how it was done for BF2, but you could tell me it was ripped right out of BF1942's menu and I'd believe you), the Oblivion theme like the Oblivion theme, the Fallout theme like the Fallout theme...

The rest? Not played 'em (or not enough to recognise the music).

Where is Deus Ex Main Theme? This.

Looks more like a collection from games with notable commercial success than a collection of the best game music ever to me. I don't think many of those would feature on what most would call the greatest game music ever.

But I think you're all missing the main thing here, which is of course the *cover art*. (click the image up there to expand it and enjoy your life changing as it beams into your eyes)

They've taken the same boring cover art traditionally splashed across the front of just about every single one of the identical modern FPS games (seriously, I'm almost starting to think there's a law about what an FPS's cover art has to be nowadays) and adapted it slightly for this. Sorry but it does precisely nothing for me. Less than nothing in fact, colour me unimpressed.

The music certainly isn't what I'd call bad, they're good; it's just they're generally not even tunes I'd give an afterthought when thinking of the best ever game music.

Agreed and agreed. =) The cover art is only so enjoyable to me because I feel certain it *must* be intended as parody. I like the fact that a marine has stopped on the middle of Generic Battleground #9, with aircraft roaring overhead, to squat down and play a flaming/exploding (of course I know what that instrument is).

Thought it sounded very much like one of the old red army tunes. Also sounds far more in character as well.
Thanks for that, kinda clears things up a bit.

Worth being on a 'good game music' album: BF2 - Theme (though 1942 and 2142 had better themes), Oblivion - Theme (Morrowind's was better), Mass Effect 2 - Suicide Mission, Bioshock - The Ocean on His Shoulders, Fallout 3 - Theme.
Worth being on a 'best ever game music' album: Possibly the BF2 theme, the Mass Effect 2 - Suicide Mission track, and the Bioshock one.
What is this doing on that list oh my goodness do these guys even play games: Everything else.

Not a single track from the Crusader series? They could fill up an entire Best Video Game Music cd with just tracks from those games.

*Grab them all in FLAC format from here (http://www.mediafire.com/echosector). (someone on the Crusader fan site put them up, it's totally legal. I think.)

Edit: Really, the Fallout fucking 3 theme over this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpNIaZhSug8)?

I bought this album and listened to it yesterday. It's a great thing, but I wholeheartedly agree that the selection is pretty poor. The Fallout 3 theme sounds better than the original version, but the ME2 suicide mission track somehow doesn't seem as moving as the original one.

All in all, a bit hit and miss, but I really hope they do a volume 2 with some more _obscure_ (but much better) tracks.

A non-digital approach to many video game musics is always interesting, even when the songs themselves arent that great. The Mass effect song is interesting because the original song has strong techno influences and as such interpreting it with classical instruments can be a bit of a challenge.

Other classical takes are interesting because they reveal the songs origin, for example most people don't know that the original mario tunes were ragtime songs, the composer, koji Kondo having been strongly influenced by these sorts of songs. However If you give these songs to actual ragtime players you get this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9IkpUYlOx8) and great joy occurs.

That would make for an extremely boring orchestral arrangement.

The Mass Effect adaptation is bloody awesome.

EDIT: awesome enough for me to reinstall it. Got some savegames to trim for the third game, hehe

Mashed-up on par of greatness as the 5-0 versus Dragon Age. :D

Thanks to TotalBiscuit, the tunes from Ace Air Combat grace my mp3 player even though I've never actually played the game. Great stuff.
