View Full Version : 2012 game predictions

The 'SWtOR is medicore' thread got me realising. I mean, like, yeah - obv...

So, what are your predictions for 2012... Largely so you can reference back and say "I told you so"

Syndicate: A fun, if by-the-books FPS. Think Quake 4: Only really worth it if the rather generic setting is to your liking / tastes enough to carry the game. A massive, massive dissappointment because it will be too shooty and gunny to anyone who remembers Syndicate for the 'strategy' and 'tactical' game it never was. And a massive, massive disappointment because it is not shooty and gunny enough to anyone who remembers syndicate as the run-and-gun-and-shield-yourself-with-dozens-of-ersuaded-civilians-as-you-wield-super-massive-machine-guns game that it was.

Mass Effect 3: Any experience or opinion of it will, on the PC, be over-ridden by a massive hoo-ha about DRM, Origin or EA being evil.

Bioshock Infinite: One of the best games of the year, by far. But Elizabeth will, despite the amount of effort put in, be an annoying NPC. Not because of her character, but because of AI quirks and bugs.

Diablo III: See Mass Effect 3, replace EA reference with Actiblizzard.

GTA V: V will be to IV what Vice city was to 3. I'll be waiting for the GTA that is to IV what San Andreas was the 3.

XCOM: Fuck off.

There won't be any cRPGs released in 2012 and I'll be forced to go back and play something from the 80s again.

X-COM - Will laugh in the face of the naysayers and be one of the best shooters of 2012
BioShock Infinite - Will be largely average with some piss-poor port issues.
GTA V - Won't surface; delayed until 2013
Mass Effect 3 - Commercial success, but a schizophrenic game with no sense of what it wants to be.
Diablo III - Commercial success but players quickly go back to D2.
Kingdoms of Amular: Reckoning - RPG of the Year.
Max Payne 3 - Looks pretty, plays moderately well, quickly forgotten about.
Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 - Commercial failure.
The Darkness 2 - Commercial failure.
Far Cry 3 - Does well, but not a resounding success.

Many AAA titles delayed in hopes that they can be big launch titles on 2013's crop of consoles.
Scrolls delayed until 2013.
WoW expansion makes up western subscriber losses with new Asian subscribers.
Aliens: Colonial Marines is a disaster.
Hitman: Absolution is a critical success but a commercial failure.
Metal Gear Solid: Rising PC version cancelled.
Diablo III beloved by all, trashed widely on forums (that one's easy).
Starcraft II 2 delayed.
Bioshock Infinite better than Bioshock
HL3 announced.
That all came out much more pessimistic than I thought it would.

Eschalon Book 3? Granted, I haven't played the first two yes so I don't know how they measure up, but on the surface they appear to be quite traditional.

Is that even coming out next year? The first two games fell rather flat.

When is KotC 2 due?
Something to do with the developer deciding to create an RTS instead.

Of course they are.

Stalker 2: launches in September, sells 5 million copies across all formats by the end of the year

BioShock Infinite: will be mechanically worse than BioShock 2 and will get more critical praise than the first two combined. Many snobbish articles will be written about it and RPS will post a big one about Elizabeth. That Kieron bloke will post about it too!

Kingdoms of Amalur will bomb but it will be awesome

Far Cry 3 will be shooter of the year

Doom 4 will be shown earlier than QuakeCon

Brothers in Arms goes back to the drawing board

Prey 2 will bomb and will be very repetitive, Human Revolution style

Colonial Marines will ride on the success of Prometheus, although it won't be anything like it except for a cameo from the Engineer

Warner still won't be able to make a Tolkien game as good as any of EA's

--------------------

Doom 4:
While id Software is trying to make the game a bit more old-school, my guess is that they don't fully get what made their early games fun. As a result, Doom 4 will still feature heavy scripting, cutscenes and a throwaway storyline (as opposed to a backstory). Limiting single player FPS to 30 will reduce enjoyment. Overall, the game won't be more fun to play than Serious Sam 3.

Boss fights will be boring. About the only time id has made a fun boss fight was the first Cyberdemon in DooM 1.

id software, as usual, will outsource expansion packs to other company(ies). As usual, their additions won't mesh well with the rest of the game.

In 2012, Dishonoured is going to come out of left field and blow everyone away. Arkane Studios will finally realize their potential after the flawed gems of Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah, and graduate to AAA status. Glad I'm not the only one who felt that way when playing it. Unfortunately it now seems to be Bioware's thing. And who could blame them when there are people out there who discuss the taste of Quarian sweat on the games forums? If Bioware released a blow-up Tali sex-doll with a price tag of >$1000, they'd cover the cost of making TOR several times over.

1) The indie Bundle war will escalate with Wolfire eventually singing "Our bundles bigger than your bundle, we;ve got more games than a game convention" and releasing every indie game ever for £0.99.

2) CDProjekt will release a game they designate as "B- if the right questions come up in the exam" only to complain when it still revieves a Metacritic rating of 82%.

3) Nolan North will overstretch his voice acting credentials by trying to play a Cockney.

4) Attempts to introduce "Good New Games" as an alternative distribution platform will fail due to it having a nigh on unpronouncable acronym.

5) Half Life 3 will be released to wide acclaim. AHHAHAHAHAHAHAA.

January: Assassin's Creed 3 is announced and teased, with the story returning to the original game's setting of the Holy Land, focussing on the events of the 1967 Six-Day War along with it's prelude and aftermath.

February: Mass Effect 3's launch week sees EA's authentication servers DDOS'd into the ground both by legitimate activation requests, cracked keygen programs and hacktivists making a point about DRM. The resultant ruination of the launch of what many people expect to otherwise be the game of the year sees the start of the mainstream backlash against online DRM. BioWare splits acrimoniously from EA, citing the game's launch problems (not helped by "EA's poor commitment to customer satisfaction" - Doctor Ray) and lack of support for last year's SW:TOR as the primary reason for the split.

Feb 14th: The bell curve of Tali/Liara/FemShep threesome porn reaches it's peak on Saint Valentine's day.

March: Bioware announces KOTOR 3 to be run on the Mass Effect 3 engine. "It'll be published by Bethesda, so we're getting Chris Avellone to help with the story bible." - Bioware press release

April: Microsoft announce that they are revamping Games for Windows Live, and doubling down on their commitment to the PC as a platform.

May: Microsoft close down Age of Empires Online citing large operating costs.

June: Microsoft announce their flagship PC game, Age of Empires: Facebook. Several Microsoft executives are found lynched with gamepad cables.

July: Chris Metzen departs from Blizzard after a drunken tirade on Twitter against the World of Warcraft game design team, alleging that they told him 'Thrall is going to be the 5.1 loot pinata so [Chris] needs to stop being a bitch already and give us some bullshit lore reason to keep the RP nerds happy'.

August: Eidos Montreal tease an as-yet-untitled Deus Ex game starring Alex Denton, all but admitting that Invisible War was shit and they're trying to make it properly this time.

September: School starts up again. It's a quiet month for PC games.

October: Ubisoft executive admits during a press conference that the PC version of Assassin's Creed 3 will be the only version of the game, because the next generation of consoles still isn't here, before breaking down in bitter sobbing.

November: Microsoft announce that they are revamping Games for Windows Live, and doubling down on their commitment to the PC as a platform.

December: Star Wars: the Old Republic becomes a cautionary tale in the MMO industry. The login and world servers buckled under the strain in launch month, with EA spending millions on purchasing and maintaining additional data centres- which were quickly rendered unnecessary when the game began haemorraging players three months after launch. Barely a year after it's launch, Star Wars: the Old Republic is announced as going free-to-play. Any Lightsaber-using class must be unlocked with an in-game token that requires many hours of grinding to earn, or is available for £3 of real-world money (Origin-store exclusive). Players wishing to travel between star systems must either complete a mandatory five-minute on-rails space shooter sequence in the vein of Rebel Assault, or purchase a stack of tokens that allow instantaneous hyperspace travel (Origin-store exclusive).

Dec 22nd: Warren Ellis leaks the announcement of Hostile Waters 2 over Twitter, along with a FreakAngels RPG. (because hey, I can dream)

Jan 2nd 2013: Gabe Newell issues a personal apology via international newswires as the Steam Christmas 2012 sale brings the entire internet grinding to a painful halt.

Ubisoft announces that the current generation consoles are too weak to power Beyond Good and Evil 2, and decides to launch it exclusively for PC, DRM-Free or at most Activate and Play Offline. The Assassin's Creed series will now use the kinda photorealistic but optimized DX10 engine that AC1 had. Sequels or spiritual sucessors will be made for King Kong and Rayman. Michel Ancel designs District 10:The VideoGame that singlehandedly destroys the stereotype that movie games are crap.

Yeah, as ridiculous as I ended up getting (Although I think some of that is actually plausible), I genuinely think 2012 is going to see some major backlash against online DRM in general. Maybe in the form on a sustained DDOS on Origin's login, a leak of an authentication algorithm a la Crysis 2, or simply a hard server crash rendering either ME3 or another big release totally unplayable.

I didn't find her annoying, but compared to most of the series' other female characters, she's probably preferable to most. Miranda and Ashley both felt utterly dull and boring, whilst Liara is probably far more sexy-alien fan-service than Tali could ever be.

Is Mass Effect even that huge a release? I was under the impression that neither ME1 or 2 sold staggeringly huge quantities.

Yes, the specialist press really love Mass Effect, and it has a massive awareness amongst the enthusiast crowd; but I don't think it has the mass market appeal and awareness that even a franchise like Assassin's Creed has.

Anyway, personally I don't think there will be a huge backlash: but then my opinion that DRM has on the whole become less intrusive in the past few years seems a minority opinion anyway...

My predictions:
Borderlands 2 is either incredible or really not incredible, I'm going to go with the former. I'm hoping it'll be what Assassin's Creed 2 was to AC1; i.e. expanding on the tech demo of the original with more variation of stuff to do. There's so much potential in Borderlands, and as much as I love the first one, it wasn't great and I still can't handle more than 2 hours at a time in co-op and about 10 minutes playing by myself.

BF3 sees BC2, 1943 and 2142 DLC, they are all glorious and we get to use M1 Garands in the core game. I missed that little guy.

That's about all I'm really looking forward to next year, life is far cheaper that way.

Fewer people will have money to spend upgrading their gaming rigs or buying AAA games. However, the first part of that will probably not be a big deal because lots of people will have gone and upgraded for Skyrim.

Diablo III''s always-online feature will cause internet problems in the UK for a day or two at release (cue much moaning on the web), but few people will stick with the game.

Areas that can't get any form of decent Internet coverage now will continue to be cut off due to a lack of investment.

The folks who developed Bastion will talk about their next game.

We'll all continue to wonder what anyone sees in the newest glossy shooter / declare that the newest glossy shooter is excellent and complain about all the arty types.

Nintendo's 3DS will continue to make slow sales, but will probably do just enough to avoid being sent to the scrap heap by its parent company. Most of us will continue to wonder who cares about 3D.

From the talk on the Iron Tower Studio forum I think we'll see AoD before the end of next year. Dead State is doubtful - the team has more experience, but it hasn't been in development half as long as AoD.

My prediction: AAA games will continue to be less interesting to old-school PC gamers and we will continue to look to the smaller studios and indie devs for games that will at least attempt to push boundaries in any area beyond graphics.

My predictions:

1) Origin rage continues despite no real cause. Meanwhile, at Valve, Gabe laughs all the way to the bank, while rolling slowly towards it in on a stretcher after suffering an MI. Fanboys hold vigil outside Valve offices.

2) Speaking of Valve, Episode 3 is either cancelled or scaled back, since Valve are terrible at episodic content and decide to either release DLC or bite the bullet and move on to Half Life 3. Either way I think we'll hear something about Ep3. It's been 4 years since Episode 2, and it was a 6 year gap between Half Life 1 and Half Life 2, but 2 years between HL2 and Episode 1. These numbers therefore mean absolutely nothing but it sounds like I've got something to back this one up.

3) Tale of Tales releases another art-"game" where the player walks in a straight line representing a human lifespan. The entire world is black to represent hopelessness. Subsequently it's revealed the game has no point and it was just a dream. RRP of $29.95, released to widespread critical acclaim on RPS.

4) Online piracy war heats up, even more publishers rant and rave about PC piracy and more titles leave the platform. PC gaming still remains strong. PC gamers everywhere claim they don't want those "dumbed-down titles" while condemning the backlash. Lawsuits increase with each passing month. Copyright infringement overtakes murder as the crime with the most severe penalty. Four nations implement the death penalty for copyright infringement (one of which most likely being China).

5) X: Rebirth is awesome and shows what can be done if you stop clinging to your useless UI. Dwarf Fortress receives a major update that includes a working and logical UI. Scores of players leave because it's been "dumbed down" or is "too intuitive and therefore hard to use."

6) SWTOR dies, and deserves it for being WoW with lightsabres.

7) ARMA3 is released, runs at 15 FPS average on high end systems and crashes after 15 minutes of play. Bohemia Interactive Studios is widely praised for having their most stable day-one release yet. Emergency patch fixes issue with memory leak, causes campaign to bug and sound to stop playing on all systems. AI now set to deliberately aim to hit trees while driving.

8) Duke Nukem Forever 2: The Day After Tomorrow is released. Rockets to 100 on Metacritic, PC exclusive release.

9) Mannconomy crashes, flareguns and Hatless Engie become hot commodities, refined metal now worthless. Hundreds of idlers banned in the process.

10) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 released. Consists of 20 minutes of non-interactive gameplay. Multiplayer mode is an additional $59.95 a month and lets you choose your name in-game and play with a knife and a pistol on one map. Extra weapons are $4.95 each, maps are $20. Alternatively, pay $145.90 a month and get everything while you rank up.

I recently made a pact, with myself, to start paying full price for worthwhile games, especially if they are independently published. I predict ....

ME3 will be a big success but will continue the trend of being simpler and more "Awesome" and Bioware will have continued its trend of making poor quality games in 2012.

X Rebirth will be quite good but many people will be angry at the changes and it will not sell that well.

TOR will be a run of the mill, boring MMO, but will sell quite ell due to Biowares overfunded marketing department.

Bethesda will continue to reap the rewards of Skyrim proving that dumbing down is the way to go.

There will (hopefully) be a slew of indie games, taking risks, some of which will be quite good. (one can hope)

AAA games will continue their downward spiral. A new keboard with one button will come out being sold so PC players can comfortably play the new cinematic experiences. Bioware will have designed the new keyboard.

Diablo 3 will see some success but the game itself will be terrible.

2012 isnt really looking very good so far.

You guys may not think this to be important, but there are rumors new generation of MS and Sony game consoles will be announced or even launched next year. Epic has publicly spoken for those speculations. I have high hope that those new gaming platforms will bring new gameplay innovations to the industry. Nintendo's new game console is quite a disappointment to me as it is not as ground breaking as Wii. I am so tired of thousands of PC games which are played only on mouse-keyboard and joypad. Of course, no one actually owns the PC gaming platform so naturally no one would invest in any innovation than higher computing power. I wish that new and exciting gameplay systems of new game consoles would force PC game developers to bring those to PC.

And I predict that Kinect PC will be proved a failure within 2012. MS will not work well with other game dev.

It will sell well. The fans will still buy it and it might even break into a new player base since they're finally ditching the ridiculous UI that's plagued the series since the first game!

Bethesda will continue to reap the rewards of Skyrim proving that dumbing down is the way to go.
How was Skyrim "dumbed down" compared with Oblivion? From what I've read on the RPS forums (who tend to be the most critical of anything not released by a single person with 8 bit graphics) it's a major leap forward.

Nintendo's new game console is quite a disappointment to me as it is not as ground breaking as Wii.
The Wii was groundbreaking? Really? I had a motion-controlled gamepad back in the 90s, it was called the Sidewinder Freestyle Pro, and it was made by Microsoft. It was nigh-useless. The Wii hasn't done anything revolutionary except show that a shovelware platform can be successful in the casual market. Out of all of the consoles I'd say that Sony's Move has the most promise... but that's not saying much!

I'll enjoy 2012 at least, I think Bioshock Infinite and Dishonored will be very good. There's a bunch of indie games that I'm looking forward to as well, including Monaco, SpyParty and The Witness; I'm sure they'll all be great. Hopefully Natural Selection 2 will get out of beta as well, it's shaping up to be a worthy successor to the original.

SimCity 5 released - bigger and more complex than 4 + Rush Hour. As an added bonus, it's stable and doesn't crash when I save my game.
GTA V radically reinvents the structure of a GTA game, solves the problem of narrative dissonance.
Doom IV is a taut, simple shooter with a perfect feel, A return to id's glory days.
Marathon (2012) is released on PC (and Mac!) by Bungie.
Bethesda announces that they're using the Skyrim engine for an entirely new universe, Todd Howard tired of generic fantasy.
Facial capture hard/software used in LA Noire falls precipitously in price, available for all (and runs at 60+ fps).
Battlefield 3 gets full mod support.

How was Skyrim "dumbed down" compared with Oblivion? From what I've read on the RPS forums (who tend to be the most critical of anything not released by a single person with 8 bit graphics) it's a major leap forward.
Maybe not Oblivion (although it's probably on its level), but it's definitely dumbed down compared to Daggerfall and Morrowind.

Indeed. Half the reason I find myself coming to these forums less and less is because every other comment is just someone down on the medium (which given this is a PC gaming enthusiasts site is kind of tragic really). Sure I think that there's plenty to legitimately criticise when it comes to modern games, but this toxic recycled culture of thrown out nebulous terms ('dumped down' 'shallow' 'consolfied') revolving around this rose tinted illusion 'games were better in the old days' gets rather dull after a while.

Our loss. Many of those people become parodies of themselves, so they don't get to me.

I only fear 2012 will be a sucky year for video games in comparision to this year which was pretty great. The Witcher 2, Deus Ex, Skyrim, The Book of Unwritten Tales (and Trine 2 on the way). Also, there are very few games confirmed for next year which have gotten me excited. I don't want the new Bioshock, Diablo, or Mass Effect. Hitman and Max Payne have piqued my interest but they could go either way. Maybe I'm just not thinking about it hard enough.

I don't think any game to be released in 2012 will be more fun than Voxatron. Especially after it gets monster editor (in 0.3) and scripting support later at some point. It's already loads of fun, only a bit raw (too few monster and item types).

End of Nations may just end up being a bland rock/paper/scissors type of RTS. They were saying there will be hard counters.

Tribes: Ascend may end up being great, but it has major gameplay issues like dominance of hitscan weapons and base generator being pointless.

Legend of Grimrock will probably be too short and will not feature a level editor.

Natural Selection 2 is progressing, but it was supposed to be out a couple months ago.

Oh why not:

Bethesta noting at how popular mods were for previous Elder Scrolls game make a special in game browser that can auto download and configure all mods released for the game with minimal fuss. Sales in Japan skyrocket, though apparently 90% of players do not pass beyond the opening areas and somehow rack up 500 hours play time each.

Epic announce and release Unreal Engine 4 along with announcing Unreal Tournament 4. Since they know that pirates exist they hold a “Make something Unreal: Tournament” contest where all the content is publically made, including in game mechanics. Before release the game is ported to consoles and then the console port is ported back to the PC version. Game flops badly as PC users wouldn’t buy into a console port and console users wouldn’t buy due to it not being Gears of War 4.

Ubisoft announce they will no longer be developing PC titles due to the platform having a 420% piracy rating. Sales of all Ubisoft games are down for the year. Management claim “It’s the PC users still. Even though we no longer support them they are retro-pirating the games we release for Xbox and Playstation via Internet torrent websites and free-to-play platforms that cause terrorism. We are still dedicated to maintaining good relations with PC users, we do not support PC users, I don’t know what I’m on about any more.”

Hideo Kojima quits videogames to become a film director. “I liked making games for years, but to be truthful I always preferred the idea of making films more.”

Activison announce that due to the popularity of the Call of Duty series there will now be 3 titles per year. All other Activision projects are cancelled. After the release of Call of Duty 16: Working title people noticed that the games were actually unfinished and quite rushed. Its at this point people noticed that both the single player and multiplayer modes required no user input what-so-ever. Complaints that the games were simply now movies, Activision retaliated by claiming they were actually “Digital Extravaganzas”.
After the release of CoD 16 board members are very unhappy with the uptake of sales. At a small 32million in the first 3 hours the series is cancelled for another project as yet un-named, apparently with the working title “Bobby said ‘I don’t fucking care what it is! Market it and make it sell!’”.

China finally annexes the United States due to its debts and implements the No Console laws there as well. As a result Japan issues a “no enter or leaving” law regarding videogames, but by this point everything is simply a “Become a little girl and pander to Otaku” simulator so no-one notices.
Gold farming is legalised and playing MMOs is now a viable job.

Steam sales become so silly that the sale period is extended indefinitely. Many publishers panicked and asked not to be placed on sale, but Valve did it anyhow because, you know, they can. Steam users games libraries now so large that Steam is no longer a games service and more a stamp collection.
Half-Life 3 is announced and released, and it is revealed at the end the whole series has been a Freudian way of attempting to make the player have sex with their mother.

And on a side note, Jesus I type garbage when bored.

Starfox from Retro Studios will be a launch title for Wii U. Accompanying it in Nintendo's launch line-up will be Pikmin 3 and a Wii Sports-esque pack in title.

The console itself will be reasonably well received and successful, but it's Microsoft who'll dominate the next generation, largely at Sony's expense.

Has Starfox from Retro been confirmed? It could be very interesting. Since they were FPS'ing old franchises before it was cool, they might be able to get away with doing that with Kid Icarus. Just be sure to use a proper cover system when shooting grim reapers.

It'd be an epic troll if she ends up having an illithid-like squidface.

That would be absolutely incredible. Are you familiar with Freefall (http://freefall.purrsia.com/), Nolano? If not, I feel that you probably should be, you'll like it.

Anyway, that said, one of the characters of Freefall is actually a squid-like critter in a human-shaped suit. The reason for this was xenophobia, Sam's appearance lead to people freaking out, which made it very hard for him to meld in (which made it hard for him to be the sqidly corsair he wished to be). But yeah, once his faceplate goes up, it's all tentacles.

It'd be funny if Tali's race was similar, and their suits were actually built upon the base of an automated sort of mech-suit that they were already using. Perhaps they remade these suits into the image of the races they wanted to fit in with, in general, so they'd be appealing to them.

So the reason Tali's suit has a bust is to be aesthetically appealing to such people, not because she actually has a breast. Inside you have an octopi-like critter which is all tentacles with no sort of recognisable human body at all. But Bioware aren't going to be brave enough to pull something like that...

...are they?

...

I can hope.

Has Starfox from Retro been confirmed?

No, that's why it's a prediction. ;)

Retro is a black hole so far as their current activities are concerned. All we know is that they contributed some emergency crunch time on Mario Kart 7, much as Blizzard pulled folks from Starcraft 2 to get World of Warcraft out the door.

The major factor informing my prediction is that Retro has to be working on something; and personally, I suspect they've been working on whatever it is for quite a while, possibly since 2008. Given that the question is merely: what? And once we consider Nintendo's predilection for revisiting its vast IP catalogue, Retro's position as arguably Nintendo's most hardcore and western-oriented studio (duh, being based in Texas), coupled with what we can reasonably say they're *not* working on for one reason or another, the remaining possibilities all but suggest themselves:

Pilotwings, F-Zero, Metroid and ... Starfox.

We also need to consider Nintendo's embracing of the casual market. They've realised they can't rely on that market alone, but I can't see them launching a major title in the console's infancy that is totally inaccessible to that market: that rules F-Zero and Metroid out. Metroid has the additional point of franchise fatigue against it. I'm sure the franchise will be revisited on Wii U, and probably by Retro, but not until their second (~2014) or possibly even third (~2016) outing on the console.

Between Starfox and Pilotwings the latter more obviously lends itself to casual funtimes, but we've already had quite recently had a Pilotwings title for 3DS. And whilst not ignoring the casual market, Nintendo also wants to re-engage more hardcore gamers. Starfox can do that, and has the benefit of retaining significant cachet in the broader market: everyone still knows about doing a barrel roll some 14 years after Starfox 64. The title is a natural fit for Retro and their talent set, the second-most natural fit of the candidates (behind Metroid) for Wii U's unique capabilities, and the perfect candidate to fulfil the 'hardcore' slot in a launch line-up in which Nintendo will be seeking to demonstrate their cred across the entire spectrum right from the word 'go'. The Wii Sports-alike will be the casual launch entry and Pikmin 3 the 'bridging' entry (and, incidentally, one that is a perfect fit for Wii U) occupying a similar - albeit smaller - place in Nintendo's market landscape to Mario Kart.

The general shape of the face is still pretty similar to humans, you can see it in the shading from outside the helmet. It's much closer to human than, say, the turians. Assuming that the model inside the helmet is based on the intended facial structure (I know it's just used for shading but still it probably has some basis in lore) then quarians are intended to look close to humans.

Brothers in Arms: Furious 4: Devs so embarrassed that they cancel it, seeing that Borderlands 2 is coming out anyway, and that is what they were trying to copy.
Hitman: Absolution: A critical failure, for its small, linear levels and minimal social stealth. IO Interactive start selling costume DLC. A "Basque, Stockings & Suspenders" costume that makes you bullet-proof and allows you into any area without arousing suspicion is their top-seller.
Thief 4: Critical acclaim, not much in the way of sales.
XCOM: A huge commercial hit, once they put in a character creator, allow for the PC being of either gender, and stick in a (potentially lesbian) love-interest in the game. And call the PC "Commander Shepherd".

Bioshock Infinite - Will probably be delayed to 2013, if not then it comes out late next year to wide critical acclaim. Undeserved backlash follows.

CS:GO - released with moderate success, further divides the CS community, fails to become a e-sport game (not if Valve does a big tourney).

Dota 2 - Will be huge, converting a bunch of HoN/LoL players. But remains newb unfriendly.

Valve will announce a new IP, or maybe even HL3 (albeit doubtful).

x rebirth will be very successful and everyone jumps on-board the spacey bandwagon, Relic announce they are working on Homeworld 3 and will be released next year. Activison realise they no longer have the homeworld IP and sue THQ so they can also release a Homeworld game.
Valve announce they have no news on Half life 3 and have no plans for it. Valve announces a spacey game to be released sometime this millennium.
