Have they always worded it "Holiday sale 20** Gift"? It seems like they might only be cheap if you buy them as a gift to other people. Seems like something Valve might do. Christmas presents all round!

Using that same train of logic, I wonder if they are going to sell games in bundles of 4 or something in addition to singular sales -- say Skyrim is on sale for $40, but you can buy a bundle of 4 for $140, making it $35 a copy and allowing you to gift it to other people for christmas.

Often, its cheaper to buy the bundle when its available and split it then the full game.

These are the titles that are going to be featured in some sort of gifting scheme similar to the 2010 Thanskgiving sale (10 copies of Half Life 2 for 20 bucks types of things).

Still going to be plenty of sales in general (only about 200 games in that registry update when a typical big Steam sale has close to 2000 games on sale), these are just the ones that have had changes in some way.

Frozenbyte has explicitly said that Trine 2 was not going to be on the steam christmas sale. So it would be a bit weird if it actually does.

Holy crap. Dream come true or curse?

Vague-rant
16-12-2011, 10:32 PM
Curse, definitely curse. I'd rather buy about 5 games that were brilliant and entertained me than have all the games on steam. A long time ago, when I pirated games, I never really enjoyed them, simply because there were so many I couldn't appreciate it. I miss when gaming was waiting for your birthday/christmas and you got a new game and played the hell out of it regardless of whether it was good or not.

sabrage
16-12-2011, 10:35 PM
Yeah, considering the sheer amount of shit that's on Steam (have you SEEN how many Nancy Drew games there are???) I'm leaning towards "curse."

Now, it would be interesting if Valve gave you a giftable copy of every game on Steam.

Shall we make this topic the general Steam sales discussion topic then? Because they're heeeee-eeeere.

Today's daily deals:
Just Cause / JC 2 -66%
Rift -75%
Singularity -75%
Pendulo Adventure Pack -75%
Metro 2033 -75%
Bunch of Heroes -75%
Amnesia -75%
Portal 2 -75%
All Sam and Max seasons -75%
Max Payne / Max Payne 2 -75%
Orcs Must Die -75%
Fable 3 -75%

New raffle thing gist: get specific game/community achievements (much like in the summer), get either gifts or coal as rewards. Gifts can be games or vouchers, 7 coals can be turned into a gift. However, each lump of goal is also an entry for the grand giveaway.

You think after doing lots of these sales and the servers crashing every time they would start to be better prepared.

My recommendations: Orcs must Die and Metro 2033 :)

Flint
19-12-2011, 06:43 PM
My personal recommendation would be the third Sam & Max season, The Devil's Playhouse. The first two seasons were fun, but also flawed. The third one however seriously ups the ante. It's got great puzzles, great storylines, hilarious humour, amazing character development between the two heroes and some honest-to-god genuinely touching moments (I felt like shedding a manly tear at the very end). Very, very great.

Flint
19-12-2011, 06:52 PM
No, there's individual game deals daily as well. And if there's a franchise/series sale, it means all the games in that series are lowered in price.

19-12-2011, 06:54 PM
Some good deals today. Amnesia is nice if you like horror themed games and haven't picked it up in an earlier sale yet for whatever reason. Just Cause 2 is a great sandbox game. A bit on the repetitive side, but it's got enough eye candy and over-the-top action moments to keep you occupied for quite some time. And Portal 2 is an absolute steal at that price.

In a way I almost dread the upcoming days. I just know I won't be able to resist the cheap prices, even though I already own too many games as it is. Hell, I still have games from the last Christmas sale I've never actually finished.

Not quite the same situation though; They might've gotten a lot of online players during those days, but right now, it's not just millions of players at the same time; It's millions of people online at the same time specifically hammering the store web with the force of a thousand suns... and then some more.

They're the most atmospheric parts of the game. Each one is scarier than the last. They're like a horrible nightmare that just keeps getting worse. So yeah, it's good.
Metro is scary, though never as extreme as Stalker. Excellent atmosphere anyway. Play it on Ranger mode.

No. You have a TF2 inventory, a Portal 2 inventory and a Steam inventory. It's just the servers are being hammered so hard that it's not showing all of them right now.

Apparently I have 9 items in my TF2 inventory, 2 in my Portal 2 inventory and 8 in my Steam inventory, though I can't see what any of them are (though I know that some of the ones in my Steam inventory are 'spare' copies of games I already owned).

If you're going for the Super Meat Boy achievements, here's my advice:

Complete one level of The Kid's Xmas
Do level 2 if you're a pixel-perfect platformer, or level 4 if you're good with jumping rhythm. They took me about the same time to complete, with 2 having some (very) minor shortcuts if you're skilled enough and 4 not being too difficult if you can get the pattern down.

Complete The Kid's Xmas in one sitting
Give up. I've been on the last level for AN HOUR AND A HALF and quite frankly, it can go fuck itself. It's The Kid's warp zone's first level...in reverse. I say this as someone who was 100% with all content on the 360 up till about March, who then went on to Golden God it on the PC during the summer in under 4400 kills and would say they're pretty damn good at it. So when I say this final level is utterly will-destroying, I want you to understand that I really, really am struggling. The best part? I can only get about 1/5 of the way through the level as an early jump is what's killing me. I just cannot do it, at all. The only time I got past was by accident. So yeah. Super Meat Boy!

Edit 1: 1815 deaths later over 5 levels, the last of which took 3 (!!) hours to do (albeit 2.5 of that doing an early jump completely wrong) I have got The Golden Gift. My recommendation is to avoid it still, like crazy.

You'll be kicking yourself all the way to the nearest bottle of gin. This is bad.

I'd say this is only partly correct.

If a game is part of the daily six Steam achievements, like Edge or Cargo, its not going to be part of a daily deal (If its not already one, like Orcs or Bunch of Heroes) or any cheaper. This is how it worked in the Summer Sale achievement ticket deal as well.

Does anyone know if the Valve coupons add up with the -75% of Portal2? I'd like to get it today at this low price, but I'd like it even better if I could use my (hopefully, possibly) soon-to-appear coupon for this. There are simply no other Valve games I am interested in that I don't already own.

The Valve coupons aren't usable until 2nd January.

From what I managed to read about my voucher before my inventory signed itself off (and it still hasn't fixed itself), the reductions do work with sale reductions. However, at least my Valve voucher said that you can only use it after January 2nd.

3 50% coupons, 1 coal. For three objectives. Hmm.

One coupon is for Valve games, which I'll probably use in February.
One coupon is for Super Meat Boy, a game which I own way too often and which I really dislike.
One coupon is for something called Puzzle Chronicles, that Steam itself doesn't know anything about. There is a link called "click here to see eligible games" which leads to an empty page - a new upcoming release? Slightly odd.

Cargo

Anomaly

Think of Anomaly like a reverse tower defense. You control a troupe of vehicles rolling through a city infested by stationary aliens. The strategy comes from the placement of your vehicles in a line (do I put the heavy damage in the front, or the armored APC?) and what route you take through the city. The visuals are rather very good for a game of its type, but they get repetitive quickly (as did the game, for me) There's a fully voiced story but none of the talent is particularly good.

I play about one or two missions a week and then get terribly bored by it all. There's a lot of spots where the game will stop to progress the story, and while you can fast-forward/skip through it it's still annoying.

Dungeons of Dredmor.
Have you played a roguelike before? That's ok, I haven't either. I'd actually put Dungeons of Dredmor more in line with Diablo or Torchlight, just turn-based; it's got that obsessive loot-collecting vibe going on. I picked it up when it first came out and lost a couple nights of sleep to it, then just never went back. The humor is hit-and-miss, the audio is a definite miss (though easily remedied by substituting your own soundtrack) and the interface is still pretty archaic compared to Diablo 2. Ultimately, it's a game about clicking around in a dungeon and dying for a lot of very stupid reasons. I think my main gripe with it is that it expects you to experiment a lot with different builds to find out what works well together, and I just don't have the patience to fuck around that much.

I think the Steam version uses Steamworks DRM while the GamersGate version uses SecuROM, although I've kind of lost track of how we feel about SecuROM these days. Also won't get the winter achievement from GG, but I think we've established that's no big loss.

That's... putting me off, I must admit. I wasn't particularly impressed with the artwork for the female character either. I reckon it's going to be a daily due to a winter achievement or something, not that it could get much cheaper than £2.74 w/ DLC. I'll wait to see, but I probably won't get it now. I love Dredmor. It's definitely a casual roguelike, but an immensely fun one with solid gameplay. The humour seems to be a bit of a divisive thing, for me it's a definite plus - I adore the skill trees, the enemy comments, the item descriptions, everything. And it's still not got old, especially ever since they add more enemy quips and items with every patch.

I'd disagree on saying that it expects you to experiment with builds in a meticulous manner - each tree is very viable and it's really easy to imagine which work together well with basic common sense. Not that you have to - seeing as you get seven of them, even by using the "random skills" function you can still get something quite fun that works well due to the sheer amount of selection (not every time mind you; a character with several weapon proficiency trees and lots of magic support without actual spellslinging is a bit... doomed).

One of my favourite game purchases this year.

Word. DoD actually made me laugh loud at times, and to this day, only the original Sam & Max Hit The Road and Saints Row 3 managed to do that. Love the ridiculous insults monsters fling at you ("thine father was a hunkering piece of man meat").

'sides, speaking of the Steam sale, I found in my inventory a 50% coupon for Valve games, a lump of coal, and a giftable copy of Terraria and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Which is odd, since I gifted those exact two titles just before checking the inventory - leading me to think that Steam's giving extra copies of stuff recently gifted.

Like I said, I only played DoD in the first week or so. I have little doubt that it is significantly different by now. I probably died a dozen times on the first level, and the one time I made it to the second I got a monster zoo right away and obviously got mauled. At that point, I had the choice between looking up a guide to find a better build than the one I was using and somewhat liked or finding a different game worthy of my freetime.

I find that The Binding of Isaac is much more my pace, for the record.

Not being on the front page seems to be a weird error, seeing as not only does it have a special christmas achievement but Raz also features in the daily drawing.

I found it atmospheric but too linear and punishing if you try a different way.
I was very frustrated in the second half, in the library with invincible apes where you have to follow a certain path or you die. I didn't find any other way than to do it by a frustrating trial and error.
Also the shooting and stealth mechanics weren't that great.

That said for 2,50 Eur or whatever it costs in Boston go for it just for the atmosphere.
Also the story and obviously the atmosphere is much better in the book.

Steam, if you don't mind it being tied on Steam and want the patch (graphics rejigging, bug fixes, general tweaks, less terrible Meat Circus) officially + it's got achievements, if those are some sort big thing for you.

GOG, if you want the game 100% DRM-free and are happy playing either without the patch (which isn't really necessary, even if nice) or are willing to give the unofficial 'port' of it (described in the post before yours) a try.

Really entirely up to your whim and preferences, there's no clear objective victor here.

For me being a Steamplay game is actually a negative. I like my games DRM free, dreading the time when my internet suddenly goes offline and all my Steam games are useless - or when Steam decides I'm no longer worthy of getting their service, cuts me off and lefts me empty handed.

Or rather - I'm actually pretty well prepared, buying games on various websites, distributing the sources.

I recommend getting Psychonauts on GOG for these admittedly a bit paranoid reasons.

What say you ladies and gents about Metro 2033? Yea or nay?

The fact that the games setting is mostly in Metro tunnels defines its linearity. To me this is completely different and less claustrophobic then games that try and give the illusion of having space when they clearly don't. The few outdoor bits are done well enough with the mask mechanic that you *want* it to be linear (get from A to B as quickly as possible or risk exposure). Again it's a matter of perception. This, and the superb story / graphics is what makes it a great bargain game IMHO.

outoffeelinsobad
21-12-2011, 03:16 AM
Agreed with above. Metro 2033 is probably the best way to do a linear shooter if that's what you want to do. It is incredibly immersive and fun. Think of it as a sort of Russian Half-Life.

I haven't seen a single person post that they've gotten a free game from the holiday achievement thingy, where it has not been their old not-accepted-gift to another person..

Hm, i got Half-Life 2 which i just bought on the special offer. Hm, and i still seem to have only one copy.

Me, I had quite a stroke of luck - as in by joining the holiday group, I got rewarded with the entire Valve pack for free. Too bad I already had half of those, but hey, Portal 2 for zero money sounds pretty awesome.

Agreed with above. Metro 2033 is probably the best way to do a linear shooter if that's what you want to do. It is incredibly immersive and fun. Think of it as a sort of Russian Half-Life.

I bought Metro 2033 and am loving it. Very atmospheric and very tough. I particularly like the way I am shitscared of firing my gun and wasting precious precious bullets. Sure its linear but like outoffeelinsobad said its like Half Life linear. Just dont go in expecting something else and enjoy it for what it is.

Picked up all the Stalker games this morning - cannot wait to get stuck into those once I've finished Metro (and Deus Ex 3 aaaah) .. just not enough time in the day

Worth pointing out that one of the dailies is also Rage, on sale for 50% to £15. In addition, I got another coupon...33% off a Valve game. To go with my 25% off a Valve game...I can't say I'm overly thrilled.

Prizes so far: Golden Axe, 25% off Valve games, 50% of Osmos, 50% off Mount and Blade: With Fire and Sword

5 pieces of coal.

Claimed Golden Axe, but own all the voucher games, well, not quite all Valve games, but near enough. If anyone is interested in the vouchers try and catch me on steam and I'll trade them to you. Link in my signature.

I bought both of them yesterday and had a quick play last night.

The answer depends on whether or not you enjoy the challenge mode (Riddler's Revenge). If you do, then it's worth it. Both Robin and Nightwing have their own unique gadgets that can be used in predator mode, as well as sharing some of Batman's. There are a few interesting new maps that come with them too.

If you haven't bothered with much of the challenge mode with either Batman or Catwoman then don't get them.

I preferred the summer sale and it's prizes.

So did I.

I don't mind achievements -- I'm even a fan of them, as when done right, they can provide an added level of fun to the game. The summer achievements were, for the most part, a lot of fun, a lot of the games were pretty awesome and the prizes were the icing on the cake.

Here, I'm noticing that some of the games in the winter achievement deal are... questionable, at best (Dino D-Day? Game of Thrones? Jurassic Park? Yuck.), and the prizes are horrible. For example, here's what I've got after 8 achievements:

50% off all Valve Games -- I'm not going to knock this one, as it was Valve's freebie.

50% off Runespell Overture -- its currently 75% off, so this is stupid. Why would I wait until Jan 2nd to redeem the coupon when I can get the game now?

50% off Hydrophobia -- Again, its currently 75% off.

Six pieces of coal -- Utterly worthless since I don't have a chance in hell of winning the contest. I much preferred when one achievement got you one entry, the end.

It would have been nice if it was like... for every 20 achievements, win a free game. At least then you could trade the free game with your friends and you'd get something tangible. Theoretically, you could go for every single achievement and end up with nothing but coal (worthless if you don't win) and worthless coupons.

Not to mention Valve really needs to work on closing any loopholes in these events before they offer them. The Humble Indie Bundle fiasco is one thing, and people using save files to unlock the achievement automatically is ridiculous too -- kind of defeats the purpose.

I am quite disappointed they removed the warner bros pack. I was intending to grab it if none of those titles i wanted went on individual sale for a better price. As it stands, I don't want those games enough to pay current prices but the deal was pretty ideal for me. With the exception of Bastion I would rate my interest level in the rest of those games as "slightly curious"

I am slightly annoyed as it was pretty much advertised that that deal would be available until Jan. But I suppose in the back of my mind I knew it might go down at any moment. Missed the boat I guess

I wanted to add that if you are in the US, Amazon is beating Steam's sale by quite the margin for today only on SEGA's games.

Some highlights include (I'll just list Steamworks stuff):

Aliens vs Predator - $2.99
Shogun 2 - $7.50 (all DLC is also 70 to 75% off)
Napoleon and Empire - $3.99
Sonic Generations - $14.99

They did have Renegade Ops, plus all DLC, for $2.99, but its currently sold out... guess they ran out of keys.

You got that wrong. Most people like Call of Pripyat the best. It's the most atmospheric of all the Stalker games, and it's not as populated as Clear Sky or Shadow of Chernobyl. It was the first Stalker game I played, and I still probably like it the most.

Clear Sky must be played with a mod because it's still pretty buggy, and it's very focused on combat, but it's still a good game as well. I'd recommend any of the Stalker games.

Not in the UK sadly, but it's worth pointing out that even the regular price of Shogun 2 on Amazon UK beats Steam's recent 60% off sale. Unless Steam manages 75% or greater off in these sales, it's not worth it.

(And Shogun 2 is Steamworks, so it'll register on Steam if you buy it from Amazon anyway.)

I recommend people get Space Marine, 50% off to £15, because it is a fab game. Single player is marginally repetitive and incredibly linear, but remains fun and if you can find me another game that makes you feel as bad ass, please, do tell.

The multiplayer is also very enjoyable and severely underrated, but is marred by being P2P, unfortunately. That would be my pick of the day.

Worth noting that the DLC for the game is not on sale. I presumed they'd do a generic 40K day, but it would seem Dawn of War will get its own inevitable setting.

Avadon and Divinity are two highly recommended RPGs, each one with a different take on the genre.

Avadon has turn based combat with a lot of pretty well-written text to read.
Divinity has a huge world, action combat (with surprisingly good acrobatics) and you can morph into a dragon, fly around and discover hidden beaches and cliffs.

Which is true, but I also think Avadon has the best designed combat of any RPG I've played in ages. Some of the boss battles are awesome. It's worth returning to the same areas a few time just for the combat.

I really loved Avadon, although the only other Spiderweb games I've played are Geneforge 1 and 2. I would say that Geneforge 1, 2 are better RPGs (less linear, larger worlds, more customization), but in terms of well thought out and engaging battles Avadon beats both of them hands down.

There have been a lot of games that haven't had dailies that were already up for the achievement contest. Anomaly, EDGE, Toki Tori and Post Apocalyptic Mayhem are either currently awarding a present or already have and none of these had dailies.

Yeah, but they might do later as you can go back and do achievements.

I have kind of noticed a pattern, in which games that haven't been in the Daily Deal (but still has achievable achievements - like Audiosurf for example), where I've gotten that achievement but not the coal/gift.
However, as soon as I complete a daily objective that is listed for the day, I immediately get the coal/gift.

Don't know why it is like that, but I still haven't got my coal for Audiosurf, And yet it moves and Atom Zombie Smasher..

Doubtful, as from what I recall, they didn't do this during the summer sale. If your achievement was up and you didn't get a daily deal, you weren't getting one during the rest of the sale. I've noticed that indie games that are already at 75% off generally don't go any lower either.

You can get the achievements early but you don't get the presents until it's that game's day in the gift pile.

For everyone else, I don't remember where I read it at, but Ubisoft sent out an email stating they had big deals coming on the 24th, 28th and 31st. I'm hoping for HOMM 6 or Anno 2070 myself.

Does ME2 deal include DLC?

Just the free Cerberus Network stuff, not any of the other DLC like the Shadow Broker stuff.

I don't even know where you buy that stuff at, as I don't even see it on Origin. I think its still the Bioware website and you need to buy Bioware points first? I wish they'd just move it to Origin.

No. It includes the Cerberus Network, which is a small selection of free DLC packs including a companion and some missions, but no. The rest of the DLC needs to be bought from the BioWare Social Network using their points system.

Here is the link.

What a bunch of nonsense. Why can't I just buy it outright? Or through Origin? What is the purpose of Bioware points?

To ensure fair pricing across all platforms, I assume, except for the fact that BioWare have forgotten the concept of "sales". It's also probably a hamfisted attempt to simplify the content management system.

There has never been any other possibility to buy Mass Effect DLCs (which form a part of the whole story) outside of the Bioware store.

That's why I've refused to buy ME at all since it came out. Unless they put out a GOTY version or release the DLCs elsewhere, I'm not buying it. Not for 2 dollars.

It may be a gripping story, but so (and much better) are many books out there, eg. by Iain Banks, Vernor Vinge, Dan Simmons etc.

Technically you semi-half-can. If you buy the BioWare points through Origin... ;)

It's not actually all that irritating, I've jumped through bigger hoops for content before, and once you get using it it's not too bad. Still don't agree with it, though, they've really got a monopoly of sorts on it.

I honestly don't get why they have never done a Mass Effect 2 GOTY or complete edition.

In other news, I just finished the Psychonauts achievement and got a wonderful coupon for 50% off Chantelise... a game I just bought for 75% off.

I hate this promotion so much.

I've not bought any ME2 DLC - it's all way overpriced, and there never seems to be a sale, unlike Steam where I bought all the New Vegas DLC cheap. You'd think they'd have done a GOTY version by now. I'd probably buy that just to get all the DLC in one place and not have to download and install it seperately.

I'm surprised that Steam still sells the game given that you can't get the DLC through Steam.

Valve didn't retroactively apply the changes to the service, so a lot of games are available on Steam without their DLC.

So has anyone here managed to bag any nice gifts yet? A couple of people from work got games, the best of which was arkham asylum. I managed to bag 9 coal and 2 coupons, crafted 7 of my coal into a 10% off 2k games coupon. Tis hard to not get annoyed at just how random the gift giving is.

So far I'm up to 10 coal and 4 coupons which have better discounts right now. Crafted 7 of those coal into an even more worthless coupon.

I got a few coupons and got a copy of Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition, which made me very happy as I thoroughly enjoyed it when I played it on the PS2.

I've heard that's one of the worst PC ports in existence, so I'd be careful if I were you.
