Morrowind has been sitting on my hard drive for months now, and I finally summoned the courage to mod it and play, as many of you have suggested in various threads here.

Unfortunately, an hour of scouring the Internets gave me at least five different compendiums that purport to fix and beautify Morrowind, and I haven't a clue what to do about it:

I'm fairly sure I'll find more if I keep this up. Do you guys have any suggestions or preferences? Any one-stop shops with everything conveniently packaged into an exe that you use? This is my third attempt in months to get Morrowind running without suffering from mod overload.

I reinstalled the game and #3 in your list, and it is nothing short of stunning to look at. Installation was a breeze too, and it has a very user-friendly interface where you can customize many aspects of the game, from the shape of the trees to the bubbles in the water.

Thanks for that. On that note, is Morrowind the kind of game that benefits from non-visual changes to gameplay, like Oblivion did with leveling mods and such? The only piece of advice I've gotten in this regard is about getting rid of cliff racers.

A peaceful wildlife mod like http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=175 is generally to be recommended. It doesn't get rid of the cliff racers but it does stop their endless attacks.

Unfortunately there aren't as many mods that change levelling and combat, simply because Morrowind's combat system is so primitive to begin with.

I would definitely recommend the Less Generic NPC Project: http://lgnpc.org/
It's an ongoing project to add new dialogue and personality to every npc in the game. The scale is massive and the quality of the writing is actually pretty consistent. It also adds a number of new quests. I think it really plays to Morrowind's strengths as a lore and dialogue heavy game, although it may not be everybody's cup of tea.

The very first mod anyone should do is remove cliff racers.

If you have Oblivion, maybe look at http://morroblivion.com/

Morrowind has tons of atmosphere but the combat is terrible, and I'm speaking as someone who played it to death with multiple characters, though I never did finish the main quest.

I'd look at mods that gave the combat and magic bigger balls before I looked at making it pretty. No recommendations though. Last time I looked at Morrowind mods I nearly gave myself a nervous breakdown.

The combat in morrowind is 1000x times better than Oblov. Oblivion is so boring, you walk around your opponent holding block, waiting for him to attack you. Which he will do even though it guarantees free hits. Then he recovers and you play the waiting game again.
Morrowind was much more fun, there was no arsing about, stab stab stab, get it get out. With an enchanted weapon, you get a explosions of colour and magic, and someone drops dead. If hes too strong run and maybe chuck a few 50 foot fireballs behind you. When you start getting better gear, youll need a mod that keeps enemies strong, though.
