I'm playing Perpetuum again at the moment with a view to possibly writing some stuff about it on the main site http://www.perpetuum-online.com/ It's essentially Eve-with-robots, nothing like as polished or dynamic as the big space MMO, but nonetheless interesting if you happen to like glacially slow sandbox MMOs.

There's a two week trial on there so if anyone fancies trying it out for a while you can ping me in there. My character name is zwiss.

I'm downloading the client to give it a try, though it'll take a lot to convince me I have the time and money for two MMOs (especially since the other one is Anarchy Online, which I think has the most expensive sub out there).

But I like the screenshots and the trailer, and I did like Eve, and the world looks like my kind of thing, so who knows? I'm prepared to give it a chance.

I played the beta, actually bought in on the early start, and then never logged in after the beta. I still get the email announcements, but I never found anything in the game that I saw worth a monthly sub, considering the competition. :/

Is there anything there worth investigating for someone who loves, but is bored of, Eve?

That is what I want to find out. They have killboards, anyway.

I think that most MMOs have little to offer past the first month unless you're in a good group. I'd have probably stuck with PO if I'd had more than one friend playing with me. We both kind of felt like there wasn't anything much different ahead of us in the game since we weren't part of a big corp, so weren't going to be doing any organized PVP, and the PVE was pretty shallow.

EDIT: If I can remember what I changed my password to after they had that security breach, I'll see if I have any time banked.

It's a fairly easy 573MB download to grab. The mining tutorial gave a vague whiff of the grinding i expect is involved and going through the interface in the tutorial I found it a bit clunky. I'd quite like to just dive into some of that interesting-looking PvP, wonder how soon it is before one can get involved with great rockets of justice.

Make sure you do all ten of the tutorial missions - yes, even the mining one, Jim - because you receive a tier 1 light bot as your ultimate reward, which will save you having to grind 400K+ to buy one.

EDIT: Also, join RPS channel in game if you're already there.

Anyone got a link to minimum specs? Traveling at the moment with a netbook that isn't particularly powerful, but otherwise like the idea of getting in on something EVE-esque with some RPSers.

Specs are on the download page http://www.perpetuum-online.com/Client_download

thegooseking
30-12-2011, 03:37 PM
One thing they don't mention in the specs is screen resolution. Given the UI I have a feeling it helps to have a high resolution (unless it scales and for some reason just looks like that on all resolutions). UI windows can be minimised, though, which helps, and it's pretty much almost ok on my pitiful 1600*900 monitor. A netbook screen is, what, 1024*600, though? Not sure how well that would work.

Rossignol
30-12-2011, 03:53 PM
Yes, a big screen is definitely best for all the UI elements.

Corporation is up with half a dozen of us now. Anyone else joining go to channel rps for an invite.

Yeah, the specs leave me out of it. Good luck though, lads. If I decide to get my good laptop shipped over to the UK to meet me there next month, 'cause we're settling in Horsham for 6 months, then I'll see if you're still perpetually playing. I'm sorely tempted to get it shipped over, but it'll be a pain in the arse when we're on the final leg of our trip, and access to fewer games should mean I spend more time being productive and writerly.

Actually find the whole idea terribly interesting, so even if there aren't enough freebies to go around I think I might get involved. As penniless as I may be.

I've found a couple of sites that look helpful, a Wiki (http://foom.electric-mayhem.org/wiki/) and a blog (http://gremrod.wordpress.com/) with some guides and info.

Here's a quick overview of the manufacturing process from what I've worked out (correct me if anyone knows better):

Facilities are found under the leftmost button on the right hand side of the menu when you're inside a terminal. Reverse Engineering, Factory and Prototype Facility.

Calibration Templates, or CTs, are the blueprint for manufacturing items in Perpetuum. Manufacturing is done, surprisingly enough, in the Factory. This appears to be the most skill-intensive stage, as some items and robots require many materials to create and there are a number of skill to decrease material use and time taken. Each production run from a CT will degrade it, so you only have a limited number of uses before having to create a new one. This can be mitigated with skills.

Decoders are used in combination with an item to reverse engineer it and create a CT. Some items need higher level decoders (from 1-10), using a higher level than necessary results in a more efficient CT. Skills only increase the number of parallel jobs and the time it takes, so are not essential for this stage. Creating CTs for higher tech level items requires a prototype (see below).

Kernels are used to research prototype designs for items. What exactly you learn is random from a subset of items based on the type of kernel, so stockpiling them for later use seems sensible. Once you get 100% knowledge of an item you can create prototypes of it by accessing the Prototype Facility. Prototypes are much more expensive to build than the standard item, so are best used for reverse engineering to create more advanced CTs, rather than fitting directly to your robot.

My old Corp seem to have all but dried up in my time out of game (either that or they're just ignoring me), so you lucky sods get put up with my chat instead. Yaaay!

Are people mixing factions in the corps? IIRC, there was the "bullet" faction, the "laser" faction and the "missile" faction. What faction are most of the RPS folk taking?

Kelron

Whichever you want. It's like Eve in that you can cross train to any faction's equipment afterwards, and the starting locations of each faction are very close to each other.

Kelron

I don't think many of us have really picked an area of specialisation yet, or indeed have much of an idea about what skills we'd need. Given the similarities to Eve, "too much" probably isn't an issue when it comes to EW, except for the other side.

Question: Turns out I have an account that I registered way back when they were running the beta. I never got into the beta.

Am I likely screwed as far as a free trial goes? It sounds like it's a code that they're supposed to email you, but I don't seem to have one. Possibly because I didn't make a new account.

So, I was thinking of starting the free trial on Friday so that I have two (almost 3) weekends to play the game. However, I don't have a lot of time nowadays, so I probably wouldn't be able to play over the week. Does this game require enough time that I couldn't just play it effectively if I only played over weekends, and would 2-3 weekends not give me enough experience with the game to make an informed decision on whether or not to get a subscription afterwards?

OK, so I played a little yesterday (pilot name = Chrom) and got an Inv to the corp (thanks guys!).

Initial thoughts as someone who has never played Eve, but dabbled with other MMOs -

Some of the UI seems counter-intuitive or just plain confusing. e.g. if I can click on a drone/target on the screen, why must I then use the "Landmarks" window to select it as a target using an RMB menu, rather than having the same menu pop-up on the drone in the playing field?
It's not exactly helpful. Several of the tutorial/training missions were unclear (maybe down to poor translation?) and it was too easy to do things wrong. e.g. one mission I had to take some data to a terminal, except the game didn't automatically load the data into my cargo. Another mission I had to recover some data from a terminal, but the game allowed me to start the mission without having enough cargo space to complete it.
Minor quibbles probably, but they were still jarring and not at all a smooth experience. And, oh my god, you have to open so many windows to be able to do anything. Is there a way to bind both my guns (mk2 newbie bot) to a single key/button?

Overall, I think I like it. There's obviously a lot of depth to it and I'd like to get to the stage where I can participate in a proper battle, but we'll see how the trial period goes...

DarkNoghri
21-02-2012, 01:59 PM
I'm also a newbie here, but:

1. There's a window in which when you click on someone, it selects them and has lock-primary, lock-secondary, and unlock buttons on it. I've never locked someone through the landmark window.

2. If you check the keybindings, you'll find some interesting stuff. I wondered for a while why I had to click all my guns to keep firing at different targets. Turns out space-bar is alpha strike by default. It fires everything.

Joined up yesterday, ran the tutorial and a mission. Dual machineguns :D Game looks interesting to me. Quite like EVE, which is not bad, with a far less abstract world. I always found the universe of EVE to be too abstract for my liking. I'll be running about a little and getting a feel for how things work, but would appreciate if anyone playing would show me around a bit :) It's not as if the game seems to start you out in a busy hub location, or points you to one :p I guess maybe I will do some exploring and save up for a bigger robot or something and see what happens when I get home today.

Do all the tutorial missions, you end up with a few bots, one for combat, one for industry. I saw you'd reached ICS Alpha last night, do missions there to earn rep and cash, once your rep gets above 0.2 with a "sub faction" (combat or industry) then the next tier of missions will open up to you.

I joined (late) a squad looking for some PvP action last night, got to take a sightseeing tour, play chase with some bots and fire 6 shots at a potential target - it wasn't quite an unqualified success :)

Hi there,

I subscribed for the free trial yesterday.
I've got a question concerning character creation.

There are some tools/websites to help to choose the best options during your character creation.
http://gremrod.wordpress.com/category/character-creation/

http://foom.electric-mayhem.org/wiki/character_creation

http://www.perpetuum-planner.com/

If i want to start with PvE and Mining, it's better to create 2 characters, since going hybrid is not encouraged. (pure builds are considered best in the guides i found online)
But with the EP system (like Eve) you can only spent it once on 1 character.
So to be the best in, and create the optimal character for PvE and Mining you have to have 2 accounts.
One for each career path.

Am i correct in this assumption and can you tell me what part (PvE or Mining) is best to start with?
Which part is more 'fun' in the game current state? (i know finding something fun is a personal opinion)

cheers

Finally thinking of giving this game a try this weekend. I have ample free time over the weekend finally, and few distractions. Will download the client before creating an account, thanks to this forum. Will also make sure to complete all 10 tutorial missions. Sounds like a fair deal - 1 or 2 mechs for the missions. Pretty good stuff.

Just think its finally time to try playing a game with real risk/reward systems where planning and taking changes really matters.

Your stuff is safe when you're gone. The Corporation may own a persistent outpost that can be taken while you are logged off, but it takes days for the rival corporations to do that - so there's plenty of time to log and and defend it!

ooooh... STC needs your skills! Some old corp players from The Olden Beta Days have returned in force, polarising the server to the point where its probably going to be an all out server war against them. Fun is to be had!

So how's things going for RPS perpetuum? Or does it have another name? And what's the policy on newbs? Are you guys holding sov, involved in politics, or just chilling around shooting stuff?

How many dudes in the corp? Do you guys have a "no Eve bitters allowed" policy? :-)

Nope, otherwise the corp wouldnt have been founded at all.

We were one of the largest corps in the game, until the russians came back that is. Dont know our exact number, but atleast 20+

Ok.. i'll check the trial out and there's a good probability you guys will have to teach me how to pew pew with robots!

Oh btw stupid question.. I'll do a lot of reading on the game, but is there anything like a plex? As in can i pay sub with in-game monnies? I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that's not the case, but just wanted to double check.

Well, some STC members prefer paying for that themselves, but its purely on a private basis.

Anyhow, weve got a few new things for you guys!

- STC was the second corp, after the zergy CIR mass production guys, to establish a gamma island base!
It was a Hit & Run affair, but we got what we wanted, and the mission was a total success!
- STC infiltrated a well defended player built structure and razed what we could before their response fleet arrived. All in all, a succesful operation and Perpetuum history.
- STC is always looking for more gentlemanly players, because thats just the way we fly.

Basically, if you want to join a classy corporation, this is your ticket in. And if not, see you on the other side! :D

Sorry for the NECRO but I know STC is still around in perpetuum and doing well I might say. Any chance we will see another story. They are coming up on a one year mark.

there is something worth investing, but keep in mind that its the same old "Waiting to get better so you can fit more/better stuff" and "social politics".

aka. REDS vs STC.

that being said, Tux, the current CEO, is an allround fucking nice guy. And the US team is such a joy to play with. If you are interested in starting perp online, STC is the best group to do exactly that with.

(also, theyre super powerful and helpful to new players ;D)

Yes we are still playing!! If anyone is interested please contact Martha Stuart, Burial, or Shadowphile in game. If you are looking for a corp to play with, PM me or shoot me an email in game and we will get you all set up. We are a friendly bunch, and most helpful to new players. We have players playing in all Time zones. So if anyone is interested drop me a line. its a great game, a little ruff around the edges and a STEEP learning curve, but if you are looking for a complex game in the vein of EVE, then I would recommend giving this one a go.
