I got it as well in one of the Humble Indie Bundles. Played it for maybe half an hour, then uninstalled it. Talk about a huge piece of garbage. It was boring as hell and I was not impressed by anything in it. Therefor, I removed it from my backlog, since I knew I never wanted to play it through to the end.

Kudos for sticking with it though.

----------------------------------
I've continued with playing all kinds of games lately, and completed a few. This weekend, I completed VVVVVV (just the main story, not the optional challenges) and played through the second Saints Row The Third dlc, Gangstas in Space. That one was short but truly hilarious!

Last night, I picked up Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity on steam, since I've been having my eye on it for quite some time now. Seems really interesting.

My efforts continue...

I've finished Bionic Commando Rearmed. Freakishly hard at certain places, but such a great game! That last level was a real doozy though.
I also finished the last Saints Row The Third dlc, The Trouble With Clones. It was.... alright. Not as funny as Gangstas in Space but better than Genkibowl VII. The ending sequence was hilarious though.

My journey continues through a lot of different games, but I started playing Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive last night, and I think I'll stick with it for awhile at least.

I am also in that quest to clear my Backlog, at least a bit.

I recently finished Skyrim, Bastion, Mass effect 3, and Human revolution DLC.

Attacking Magicka, Hard Reset and Batman Arkham City.

I promised myself not to buy any new games for a while but I failed and bought Diablo 3 and Warhammer 40k spacemarine.

I hope not to buy anything else for a while now.

That promise I make every day, but then there's a steam sale or one game I really want and I break it, I'm an awful person. ;p

But hey at least you're completing them, I get sidetracked by other games a lot.

I promised myself the same thing and bought Lone Survivor, Botanicula, Toy Soldiers, EA Indie Bundle, Arkham City and Alan Wake. I realized I can't keep this promise, instead I promised myself to not buy any games I don't intend to play right away. This, in turn, is working. I already finished Gatling Gears, Botanicula and Lone Survivor and I'm playing Arkham City, Toy Soldiers and Shank 2 at the moment.

That's a smart move ! I am restraining myself to buy: Max Payne 3, The Darkness 2, Trine 2, L.A Noire, AC Revelation, The last Story and several others, until I have the time to play them. I think I won't be able to keep that promise for Dishonored.

I still fear Steam sales...

But hey at least you're completing them, I get sidetracked by other games a lot.

What I don't tell you is my backlog on other platform... I still have Xenoblade, Vanquish, The Darkness, Dark souls (Ok for this one I just won't finish it...) , FF XIII (awful gameplay...), Darksiders, Kingdom of Amalur and Castelvania, Borderlands DLC...

My guess is that when i am done with those the 4-5 kickstarter games i supported will come to life. I could probably play till mid 2013 without buying a single game.

I still fear Steam sales...

I don't fear them as much as I did in the past. My backlog consists mainly of Indie games I got in bundles or bought for $3 or less, many of them I'm not sure I'll like. I'm pretty good at deciding if an AAA game is worth my time or not, there is no AAA game I regret purchasing since I have a steam account. Indie games on the other hand... But I'm confident that now I have a better idea of which kind of Indie games I like and which I don't, so I won't buy indie games just because they're acclaimed (Sanctum, Dungeon Defenders) or I like the genre (Sideway New York), no matter how cheap they are.

Weaklings, all of you! This is turning into an AA meeting with everyone going to the bar afterwards to hang; I'll sit here quite content with my virgin pina colada.

Anyway, I've wrapped up Bastion (which was fun while it lasted, but I don't know if I'll be going back for seconds), and now my Fallout playthrough continues. Post-apocalyptic America is turning into quite the exciting place. And as I progress through Fallout 1, I'm looking forward to my journeys in New Vegas. I should probably make that my next port of call.

That does bother me, just not as much. I like to have a good selection to choose from, not only with games but books too, as long as it's not too large (around 20 items). Problem is, I can easily resist the need to buy new books as long as I have around 20 unread books, but with games it's not that easy...

I think it's time for me to join you guys as well. I think I have about 150 games not play on steam, a bunch of games on GOG that I'd like to replay, a bunch of infinity engine games i never play and about 20 ps2 rpgs that I collected when I rebought my PS2. I spend a lot of time playing games, maybe 10hrs a week but I have such a short attention span that I can't make any progress in games and tend to play 1 game of LoL or a match of SC instead of a single player game.

After a sizable break, I finally cleared DX:HR today..

Wow. Just wow. A truly magnificent addition to the series if ever there was one. Honestly, I think I may have enjoyed it more than the original..

Already over half way through (at a guess) the Missing Link DLC/Expansion thingy as well.

Also, at one point I had Skyrim on my list as I've yet to clear the main storyline.

However, after spending around 4 hours selecting a rather excellent selection of mods, only for them to be broken by the patch that added Mounted Combat and I'm sure the soon-to-release DLC "Dawnguard" will have the same effect, i've decided to wait until the GOTY edition or whatever is released.

Knowing Bethesda, we'll get 4 DLCs and a few patches along the way, then done.

So, pondering what to clear next.. I think I'm gonna go with Dead Island, see if it's good enough to warrant picking up the DLC for it. :)

I don't really know. I was looking at the release date for persona 4 since I was a big fan of that game and realized I missed out on a ton of psp rpg then I looked at the vita memory price and it was too expensive so I wander off to the ds section and notice I missed a ton of rpgs there too, one thing lead to another and I ended up on ebay. At least it wasn't too expensive, got a basically new 3ds and psp go for 200.

I thought you meant the review was not very good at first. It wasn't and not just because I disagree about the quality of the game (I liked B2, though not as much as B1... Liked each for different reasons). You complained about Bioshock 1 in the beginning and then never addressed how Bioshock 2 handled those same issues. For example the morality system is far more intricate and the choices are a little more involved. Perhaps they put those people in booths so you would actually listen to their stories when deciding what action to take.

Altogether this review was very shallow and focused on your ideas of what fun shooty bang is and yet it missed that compared to Bioshock 1, Bioshock 2 had refined combat allowing both plasmid and gun usage. My guess is you just never took the time to figure it out since, from the sound of your review, you went in with lots of preconcieved notions.

So your lack of comparison to Bioshock 1 despite opening with reference to it, a lack of review of plot, environment, graphics, climatic set moments, Big Sister encounters, the Father/daughter dynamic, the ending, or NPC character voicing shows that you were not really reviewing the game, but having fun in a b**** session with another like minded player.

Jiiiiim
06-07-2012, 05:43 PM
Yeah that's fair enough, I never did warm to the game and I do need to learn how to become more objective in that situation. I did listen to the guys, I listened to everything I picked up, but it juxtaposed poorly with the actual world that you were wandering around in. It'd been, what, eight years since the fall of Rapture? How do these people survive? How does this place keep going? Why am I wandering around desperately eating cream cakes off the floor? Why am I this weak? It kept pushing this feeling that I was in this theme park rather than this world, that I was being massively constrained.

And sure, theme parks are more exciting than the real world, but it's not for me.

Thanks for the critique, I shall try to be more consistent. The secondary aim of this has been to improve my writing and obviously I'm a long way off that at the moment

Misnomer
06-07-2012, 05:53 PM
I really liked some of your other reviews, but they tended to be for the smaller games. I think it is a struggle for anyone reviewing to deal with massively complex games. Especially when you have to compare them to other complex games. You want to keep it short and say your impressions generally, but if you do that you may want to admit that you bounced off the game and try to think of things in it that other people might appreciate as you conclude.

On the other hand, I've so far resisted buying any games this year... except I broke down and bought the last humble Bundle... but that was mainly for the Bastion Sountrack and I actually alreadly have most fo the games, so i don't think that counts.

Just Cause 2 is indeed amazing, I love it. You have inspired me to actually try and play each game I own enough to at least form an opinion on it if not actually finish it, it's quite fun trying to work out what to play next. So far this has resulted in finally finishing Limbo (in 3 hours) and being done with Alpha Protocol for a long, long time (after 4 hours). I've only been going for about five days, though. It's been a long time since I posted in this thread, so an update is in order:

Finished games

June:

Limbo - Interesting, but a lot of trial and error in this one.Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP - Lovely music, interesting art style. Weird story and game. Overall a positive experience, although very weird. Never would have bought it if it didn't come in the Humble Indie Bundle.

July:
Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun Firestorm - Had a little C&C binge earlier this month. Played through the Nod campaign of this old expansion. It was good, but Tiberian Sun and it's expansion is excruciatingly slow compared to newer RTS games. Gathering of resources is real slow, units and buildings are real expensive and take forever to build. Fun to see the old cheesy FMVs but I can't help to think that a lot of the C&C campiness and charm is always looked at with rose-tinted glasses. When you actually see them again, they are never as good as you thought they were.

Alan Wake's American Nightmare - A lovely little continuation of the Alan Wake franchise. You may be irritated by the repetitive nature of this one, but it's short and the combat feels quite good. In my opinion, the story worked well, even though the TV-sequences were you watched Mr Scratch kill people and act all crazy could drag out a little. It was nice to see his character, but you kind of knew what he would be up to every time you clicked on that TV.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell - Never played these games before. Sure, this one is old and it shows, but it was quite a good stealth game. They story was kinda meh, and the graphics were quite dated, but it was still very playable.

Vessel - Oh my god I love this game! So freakishly addicting! I finished it in two days, immediately restarted it and played it through another time within the same day, this time getting all the bonuses. I would love to see a continuation of this game, being either DLC, expansion or an outright sequel. Just give me more rooms and puzzles to solve damnit! :D

I'm currently playing a little bit of Fable - The Lost Chapters and Fallout: New Vegas. I think I might give New Vegas a real playthrough this time.

It's good to see that other people are still doing this... not only did I break down during the Summer Sale and add to my backlog, I've not been gaming for the past couple of weeks due to family stuff + Olympics + a sudden desire to watch all six seasons of Numb3rs.

I gave up on dead space early on, found the slow turn speed combined with the 'look behind you!' jump-scares a bit exhausting after a while. I probably ought to revisit it on easy, as I didn't care much for the combat, but the world design and environment was pretty good. I like your comparison to bioshock, too, I think its apt, and not one I'd thought of before.

The sound is what makes me want to go back. With a good 5.1 surround system, it's probably the best sounding game I've ever played, all metallic clinks, drips and hisses around you as you navigate the ship. Damn, I'm going to have to play this, aren't I?

Necroooooooo!

It's half-term so I boxed another couple off. I am so close to finishing the Telltale Everything Pack. I can taste sweet victory.

Bone, Jolly Rover and Puzzle Agent 2 (http://2012thechallenge.wordpress.com/2012/10/25/54-55-56-all-the-adventures/)
Torchlight 2 (http://2012thechallenge.wordpress.com/2012/10/22/53-torchlight-2/)

I'm not going to finish them this year but I'm going to get close!

I've been mostly doing backlogged games this year because of economics, and I've determined that I will never finish the paradox pack from gamers gate. Also, due to my desire to never lose a unit, kings bounty games are taking me about 110 hours each to complete. Man I was pissed when I lost all those guys to the turtle boss.

7 years of World of Warcraft is to blame for most of my backlog but now I've finally jumped off the MMO train so I have time for those games again. A week ago I finished Deus Ex: HR which I found absolutely compelling and couldn't stop playing once I got started. Before that I finished the Witcher 1 which I bought almost 2 years ago and before that Alan Wake. Recently started playing Max Payne 1 and 2 again for the XXth time and just got myself XCOM which could also be a time killer. The games that sit horribly un-played (which I feel guilty for) are Crusader Kings 2 and Hearts of Iron 3. They take so much effort to get going that I usually stare at their icon, mouse cursor hovering above the Play-button, until I decide to play something else instead.

Guild Wars 2 is destroying my gaming time... not to mention all the time I've been spending playing Dominion (the card game) online with my brother in law. ;P

If half-term has shown me anything it's that if I didn't have to do any work I could finish this list, easy. As it is, I'm up to 57 of 76.

Tried something different with 57: Dota 2 (http://2012thechallenge.wordpress.com/2012/10/28/57-dota-2/)

This is a great idea. I also have quite a few games bought on XMas sales that I never really played...

Hurricane Sandy is nearly upon us folk in the NE part of the States, and I've got a fully charged laptop with UPS standing by to play through the MDKs and several other Gog.com titles on my backlog. Bring on the rain.

Just wanted to say I really enjoyed the T2 and DOTA2 posts.
