EARTH DEFENCE FORCE: INSECT ARMAGEDDON!
And why are there no topics about this excellent budget title on the first page?
Was 25% off in the Steam sale not enough for you cheap bastards?
After a recent viewing of Starship Troopers on Bluray (A great film that I wish had gotten a sequel) and too much time spent at work over December, it proved to be the perfect game to relax with in which I could blow some filthy rotten bugs to smithereens with rocket launchers, laser beams, plasma cannons, miniguns, sentry turrets and all sorts of other fun weapons, a lot of which I've yet to even see.
I knew what the game was about but I never suspected it would be quite so fun, and outside of the Binding of Isaac has proved to be one of the most entertaining games I've picked up this winter.
So, who else is playing this awesome game? I've only tried single player so far but I'm ready for some multi-player I think.
Also, If any of you out in RPS land want in on some down and dirty bug hunting action I've posted a topic in the social section of the forum.
Oh word? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367093/ Cough. And let's not forget http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0844760/
But seriously, EDF was pretty fun.

Just because SMiD didn't make it clear, for Christ's sake don't watch that film.

I was honestly going to buy it (2 copies for coop goodness no less) but I read somewhere on here that it was yet another piss-poor port. So no sale.
Which is a pity but there's plenty of other games for me to play, been a good few months for coop (Serious Sam, Dungeon Defenders, Saints Row 3).

How is this game for people terrified of insects? I've been tempted to snap it up, but if spiders are popping up and getting all in my face constantly , I may have to pass. XD

Just came back to this thread after reading it first time round a few hours ago to say the same. I'm also tired, didn't sleep last night >_>

Is it bad that I came into this thread intending to spoil the discussion of buggy games by thinking of a game about insects, only to be IMMEDIATELY disappointed by BOLD text?
(Also is it bad that I will write a long parenthetical description about why I didn't put the word BOLD in bold; rather than my move hands off this comfy keyboard all the way over to the mouse or indeed even to the square brackets that would be necessary to bold the text?)

Spiders aren't insects. Same Phylum, different Class.
The EDF game could have been way better with 60 FPS and high res textures. Just that could have ben a neat begin. Then make the difference from players to bot more apparent, and the different unlockables, possibly a slighty better font at the menus.
But not, we got a game that looks like a poor "PS2" title in 2011.
Is not even buggier, is just ugly and not very fun.

No.
Starship Troopers is a bad bad bad bad bad film. Inconsistent combat where the rule of ninja conservation rules, awful attempts at melodrama, a plot with rediculous leaps and twists, shallow stabs at satire which were basically just the same as in Robocop but not as well done, a completely screwed up timeline in which Denise muthafucking Richards becomes a capital ship commander in the time it takes Rico to finish basic grunt training.
Liking it makes you a bad person.
On topic, I've never seen the appeal of the EDF. They just feel incredibly cheap and a little half assed. When it comes to mindless fun shooters I'll stick to Sam, Vanquish and Otogi (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzEW2CY99mo&feature=related) or any of the dozens of similar games from last gen. Personally I think the only reason for its fanbase is a desperate lack of similar games this generation now that chest high walls rule all. But really it lacks polish, it lacks content and it lacks variety. It could be effortlessly beaten if any other developer was trying. Basically its Bioware syndrome, objectively naff but its all we've got so we have to like it.

Well I guess I rape women and kill people because I love the film. It is meant to be a silly action movie because it is a satire on silly action movies and the jingoist feeling that usual action movies take. While also being a good action movie itself. its really really clever!

No it isn't. Its a bad action film that fails to inspire any real tension, that fails to make the enemy seem dangerous, that can't maintain an atmosphere, that can't keep any consistency on how dangerous the bugs are (one bug takes six marines to kill then during the Zulu sequence each marine kills hundreds of them). It's characters have no drive and no kind of emphatic connection to the audience with Rico bouncing cock first from one girlfriend to the next and yet we're still expected to care about him and Admiral Denise Richards (DENISE RICHARDS for fucks sake). It's fake news bits and adverts are ripped straight from the Robocop "ad breaks".
Imitation /= satire
Copying generic action films does not make you a satire of generic action films.

Er. Starship Troopers was done by the same director as Robocop. I doubt that it was 'copying' the latter in the usual sense, more likely stylistic tendencies of the filmmaker. Also, it seemed to me that a lot of what was ridiculous about ST was intentionally so, and it was the parallels to real-world jingoism that was the satire, not its relationship to other action movies.
That said it's been long enough since I've seen it that I'm not going to argue whether it was ultimately successful or not.

Of course, a film about giant bugs attacking Earth must have a realistic military career progression to be worth watching, or to make you not a bad person if you like it.

Again like a lot of the action films its taking a pot shot at, how many action films have we had where one guy is able to take down loads of badguys and then one badguy is able to stop him for 10 minutes? Or characters that are real men because they don't care about relationships and love and just want to shoot things.
You say these are bad points, I say they are clever commentaries on other action movies.

@ mickygor
No. But it oughta have good action to be called a good action movie. Aliens for example managed a constant atmosphere, perfectly paced horror beats, managed to make the Xeno's genuinely scary, managed to make emphatic characters you can actually care about and more importantly imaginative, well filmed, and breathlessly exciting action sequences. In comparison the fights in ST are just dully written and blandly filmed. Hell the original Evil Dead (surely the definition of B movie action shlock) had more interesting camera work.

There is no doubt in my mind that this film takes itself entirely seriously.

Really? A film that's called a satire by its director, and is based off a satirical novel, is taking itself seriously?
