Sign-ups for season 6 are now open! If you would like to take part please do three things:

1) Add yourself to this list (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvmG4SoJhEYbdFgtbjN3VFE4OUxQTEtSLWVoVmJGX 3c&hl=en_GB#gid=22).

2) PM your email address to me (optional, but it will be very useful if I need to give you a nudge). I will not disclose it to anyone else. If you have previously PMd your address to me in an earlier season you don't need to send it again, but if you're not sure then please re-send it.

3) Click here (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions) to go to the RPS forum settings and edit the 'Private Messaging' section so that you get an email and/or a popup when someone (e.g. me) sends you a PM.

Season 6 will begin on Monday 16 January and will last two weeks, so please don't sign up if you expect to be unavailable during that period. You will probably be required to play between 4 and 6 games (division sizes are subject to the number of players). Rules are mostly as in previous seasons, and will be posted later this week.

New and old players are all welcome! No experience required, and weaponry will be provided. Sign up! (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvmG4SoJhEYbdFgtbjN3VFE4OUxQTEtSLWVoVmJGX 3c&hl=en_GB#gid=22)

How about something other than Dark Extermination this time?

WombatDeath
09-01-2012, 01:17 AM
I'm happy to try something else if people are getting bored with Extermination, or to stick with DE, my only caveat being that I want to keep things simple and avoid putting off newer players. What's everyone's preference?

bonuswavepilot

Sorry to be predictable and sameish - but my vote would have to be for dark extermination...

Maybe a combination of level types?

Heliocentric
09-01-2012, 11:21 AM
I am beginning to despise dark extermination when no explosives are involved.

If it must be extermination mandate 1 explosive or I'm not joining (not a tantrum but I just started not having fun, and hell its a game). The land grab mission bidding thing would be really interesting.

CMaster
09-01-2012, 11:55 AM
Keep it as Dark/Symmetrical/Extermination for now. It's the game at its purest and fairest. If we were going for any other game mode, it would have to involve double challenges on the same map or something to that effect.

I like variety and the idea of playing other modes but I have no idea how to make it work here. If someone comes up with something reasonable I'll definitely support it.

Sign me up.

I am actually slowly improving at this game! Last season I thought I was winning my matches for far longer than the previous seasons!

I like the idea of other modes, they can be pretty fun, but can see the difficulty balancing it.

I'll gladly play again.

I'm in, but please don't put Unaco in my league - I was destroyed last time with barely a chance to whimper: 4-nil in 2 turns!

Think dark extermination is the way to go

I could get behind this. The games without explosives can be a bit stale.

The land grab mission bidding thing would be really interesting.

I find charge doesn't work that well with a lot of maps and often leads to even worse camping problems without explosives.

Fumarole
09-01-2012, 11:35 PM
The solution is obvious: symmetrical DE with 4 grenadiers per player.

lagnut
10-01-2012, 02:06 AM
Extermination is the most tedious to me personally - but at the same time it is extremely difficult to propose another mode, as none of them have the Symmetrical feature to ensure fairness.

I'm signed up as well! I'm extremely new, but from what little I've seen I'd say that having an explosive is probably a very good idea. But I haven't played enough to really know, so I'm happy with whatever you experienced chaps think.

Season 6 has now begun! Players from previous seasons: please note the addition to rule 1 ('Team Strength' section). This time we have five divisions of six players each, and the new players have been added to the league in the order in which they registered their participation. You can now start issuing challenges and playing your matches - click here to see the league tables (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvmG4SoJhEYbdFgtbjN3VFE4OUxQTEtSLWVoVmJGX 3c&hl=en_GB#gid=25).

Important: each player has the responsibility of challenging every player above him/her in the appropriate division. That means that, for instance, tpiece in division 3 has to issue three challenges: to Ayam, Heliocentric and Sarigs.

If you are unsure who you should be challenging, look at the second tab on the spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvmG4SoJhEYbdFgtbjN3VFE4OUxQTEtSLWVoVmJGX 3c&hl=en_GB#gid=26). You need to issue a challenge for each game in which you are Player 1. If you're still unsure, post in this thread or send me a PM.

Game rules and league procedures

1) Each game must conform to the following settings:

Mode: Dark Elimination
Map type: symmetrical
Turn limit: eight turns
Turn duration: five seconds per turn (i.e. 5000 milliseconds - this is the default setting)
Visibility: vis at time zero
Team strength: four men per player, including at least one rocket launcher or grenadier
Server: UK1

Any game that does not conform to these rules will be void and must be replayed. Please see the next post if you're not sure how to create a game with the correct settings, and post in this thread if you are in any doubt.

2) After creating each game on server UK1, the challenger must state the challenge in this thread. Format: "[Player1] has challenged [Player2] in game [game ID]".

Example: "ColOfNature has challenged WombatDeath in game 123456".

3) After each game has been completed, the player accepting the challenge must report the result in this thread. Standard format: "[Victorious player] has defeated [defeated player] in game [game ID] by [number of men killed by victorious player] men killed to [number of men killed by defeated player]".

Example: "ColOfNature has defeated WombatDeath in game 123456 by 4 men killed to 2".

In the event of a draw, the format is "[Challenging player] and [challenged player] have drawn in game [game ID], killing [number of men killed per player] men each."

Example: "ColOfNature and WombatDeath have drawn in game 123456, killing 3 men each".

I will update the spreadsheet with the result of each game.

4) Challengers may start issuing their challenges from today (Sunday 15 January). All games must be completed by the end of Sunday 29 January (GMT).

5) We're all reasonable people, probably, so some flexibility will be applied. If you're going to be on holiday, or dead, or otherwise restricted in your availability, please post in this thread and we will try to accommodate you as far as is reasonably practical.

6) Try to start your games in the first week and finish them early. Players leaving it to the last minute to issue a challenge or submit orders risk forfeiting the game. If any game is unfinished by the deadline I will use my discretion and award points to one, both or neither player, depending on the circumstances.

7) At the end of the season the final results will be used to determine the divisions for season 7, according to a fiendishly cunning set of rules which I will arbitrarily put together at some point.

8) Any circumstances not catered for in these rules will be handled according to some combination of common sense, consensus, whimsy and iron-fisted authoritarianism.

Finally, a polite reminder that although PMing your email address to me is optional, it will make organisation easier so please consider doing so if you haven't already.

Good luck!

How to create a game with the correct settings

This may be useful to those newer to Frozen Synapse:

1) Log in to server UK1.
2) Click the 'Multiplayer' button at the top of the screen
3) Click 'Create a game'
4) Set the game mode to Dark Extermination
5) Click the 'Advanced setup' button
6) Ignore the scary warning and click 'OK'
7) Click the 'Generate symmetrical' button
8) If you get a silly map, or if you don't have four men per side (including at least one rocket launcher or grenadier), go back to (7) and repeat until you're happy.
9) Click the 'Submit' button
10) Ensure that the 'Game mode' is set to 'Extermination'
11) Ensure that the 'Vis mode' is set to 'Vis at time zero'
12) Ensure that the 'Turn limit' is set to 8 (and the 'Turn length' to 5000, which is the default)
13) Enter your opponent's username
14) Enter 'RPS Dark Extermination League' or something suitable so that your opponent knows it's for this league
15) Click the 'Submit' button
16) Take your first turn and note the challenge in this thread, using the format in point 2 of the post directly above this one.

I don't think I've ever knowingly turned down a scummy win since my very first multiplayer game, in which I threw away a certain victory. (Except when playing against my wife, who isn't interested in tactics so much as hurling rocket barrages at me as a form of stress relief).

I couldn't offer any sage advice, afterall, you beat me. My play style has evolved over the five league games and some single player sessions by getting a better idea of the speed at which different units move and the timings of their weapon fire. Cover is quickly rendered moot by explosives unless they get taken out early.

All my losses have been down to poor anticipation of what my opponent could do or poor situational awareness on my part (covering a wall of a room that I was due to blow up while leaving the doorway out of the room unwatched, for example).

lagnut has defeated Desvergeh in game 443838, 3 kills to 2.
This one was a really intense battle, with some fancy mind games.

For my part, I can say:

Turn 1
Tried to think outside the box – by blowing one side of it open with a rocket!
The safe bet would've been to assume a double knock-out on both sides with all rocketeers firing at each other, but my little gamble worked out pretty nicely for me because Des focussed both rockets against one guy, effectively wasting the second one on an already-obliterated target.
This opened up an unexpected surprise: I glimpsed for the briefest of moments his MachineGunner making a beeline for the lower room – and I was certain that he had no line-of-sight on my units.

Turn 2
This allowed me to employ what might seem (even in the see-all replay) like ESP when I whipped around and sent a rocket straight into his MG's face, though admittedly in my Sims I was expecting him to delay a lot more due to lining up his shots.

Turn 3
With my units' combined LoS coverage, I was sure that his remaining MG was somewhere in the right half of the facing building. Took a punt here and of course was quite surprised to see him dash out at me.

Turn 4
Amazed to find my Rocketeer still alive, I was certain that he would be gunned down in short order, but if that was the case I would at least know where he was for a little while longer.
I decided there was nothing else to do but extend that moment as long as possible – but where would be shoot from? I had only an instantaneous view of his last location as we crossed like ships in the night, and that was over half a turn ago!
Was he directly to the left, or had he gone at an upward diagonal?
This would be a key factor in where I decided to play out my jack-in-the-box manoeuvre.
As it turns out, I guess his location correctly, but not his intent as he ignored all my silly dodging in a swift execution.
However, my MGs did catch up to him!

Turn 5
I knew that I was hidden from him, but at that range I would need him to stay exactly where he was for 3.4 seconds. This seemed unlikely, but I gave it a go anyway, just in case he got suddenly more secure in the knowledge that he didn't have to stay away from rocket impacts. I wasn't a complete idiot, though, as I set out a path for them to continue on in case he did scoot away.
I was taking an incredible risk stacking my only remaining units together like that, but I'd gotten away with it so far...
A little distance from that wall should do the trick.

Blast! He ran. And I got off exactly one shot each, giving away my position with certainty. Great.

Turn 6
Move move move! You might be able to catch him. Even if he uses the window as a superior cover location to fight back from, my twin units will get the better of him.

Turn 7
Okay, he's somewhere behind this wall. And I know his Rocketeer is as well, based on the last launch. I finally decide to split up and close the net, since time is really running out now.
Due to the fact that he joined the firefight late, and that he's retaliating against the closer of my two Gunners, he is Simmed to lose this shootout despite his superior cover...

Turn 8
I do not at all expect him to simply stand there and allow this to happen, though, so I set some focus commands and set off my closer MG to hunt down this pesky Rocketeer, while my left Gunner keeps him covered. I'm assuming in my Sims that he will duck behind to reset the firefight but then pop up again straight away to regain his rightful cover advantage.
There is enough time for him to kill me if this happens, so I make sure that he gets distracted by my other Gunner running across toward the Rocketeer.
Interestingly, this doesn't really work unless I set my left Gunner to Aim mode. If I stay in the same location but without Aiming, I come off worse...
In the end, of course, it doesn't matter as he never comes back up.
Some vaguely safe-ish blast-radius-avoiding paths for my right Gunner and it's all over for his Rocketeer.

An excellent game that I enjoyed each turn of. Cheers Des!

I didn't actually realise you had two units moving together at one point there. Only noticed it due to my prediction moving one of them!

In the last turn, I did duck, re-emerge, then duck again with my MG. But it obviously didn't work as planned due to your movements.

My last turn shot with the rocket was in desperation, didn't think there was much chance of you staying near that low-wall.

Good game.

Echodb has been in touch to say that he's not going to have time to play his games, so is dropping out of season 6. I haven't heard from Imirk yet, so while I hope that he will turn up, we may not see much division 2 action this season. Apologies to the D2 players.

As for the remaining divisions, please let me know if you haven't heard from your opponents in a few days please let me know so that I can nudge any other absent players.

Here are some thoughts about my recent match against Jolima (446839).

Context
My record versus Jolima: one victory, one draw and four defeats. He is my Frozen Synapse nemesis, and if we play each other in future seasons I would like to request the Imperial March from Star Wars as backing music to the commentary. For some reason FS thinks that I'm favourite to win, the only appropriate response to which is grim, hollow laughter.

Turn 1
I bounce a grenade into my own half in case Jolima's SG rushes me. He does, but is far enough away to survive. My RL shoots the upper-right of Jolima's starting position, since it seems likely that at least one unit will head in that direction. His GL does, but manages to avoid the blast. Shit.

Meanwhile, my SG is cleverly tucked away where he is both relatively safe and well-positioned for turn 2. I am a patient Wombat; I play the long game! Unfortunately, psychic Jolima has decided that my SG is well-positioned to be murdered, and tosses in a beautifully-aimed grenade. My MG takes up position on the left side of the map, well away from explosive dangers and with a good line to cover the entire middle section of the map. But Jolima blows a hole in the wall and suddenly his MG has the drop on mine.

End of turn 1: one man down, RL facing a shotgun to the face, MG exposed with no cover, and GL doing nothing of any use or interest.

Turn 2
First order of business: get the MG out of the way. I move him slightly down to take him out of Jolima's line of sight, and into a position where he can in theory kill any enemy that makes an appearance . My GL tosses a grenade into the centre in the hope that something helpful may result (it doesn't). The RL is doomed but fires a final rocketto take Jolima's SG with him. To my utter horror, it strides from the wreckage like the fucking Terminator and beelines for my remaining units.

End of turn 2: two men down, increasingly little cover, and generally doomed. At this point I generously offered Jolima a draw, but he politely declined.

Turn 3
Objectives: Jolima has no reason to take unnecessary risks so perhaps I can finally take out that damn SG. One final grenade...boom! Little bits of shotgunner rain down on my minions, and I like to think that they took a moment to piss on his remains. Meanwhile, the MG goes on a mad dash in the hope that I might scrape a highly improbable draw, and although he takes out his counterpart he gets blown up in the process.

End of turn 3: I have been thoroughly out-manoeuvred, all of my men are dead and I have once again fallen victim to my nemesis.

To Wombat: After you got my last MG so beautifully I spent a lot of time trying to route him all over the place so he'd be both hidden or make you think he was going the other way. I wasn't exactly sure where you were though so a lot of it was luck.

To Fumarole: Given how well you'd hidden him before that I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. You played the start really well and I couldn't recover.

Well played (and a bit of a disaster on my behalf)!

Thanks. My tactic of running away on the first turn did work out well for me. You also had some terrible bits of luck like walking past my grenadier in turn 2 and not quite having enough time to run from that speculative grenade on the final turn.

Also I think the new rule ensuring we have explosive units has worked well. None of my matches have got bogged down as even if they die early, units usually have to move out of their way so there are some lines of sight.

It looks like it's the ducking that's caused you to lose.
Ducking has a 0.5 second time penalty applied to aiming, so I think that's what's given Coccyx the advantage.
