View Full Version : The Rock Paper Synapse Show Thread

OK, so I plan to offer coverage of the next season of the Rock Paper Synapse League. There's a preview of the sort of thing to expect here (although future episodes will have less tactical waffling and get through the matches quicker):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu_dQQ8d6so

The coverage of next season will improve on this in several ways, among them: quicker, snappier match coverage, improved graphics, continuous updates throughout the series, group tables, etc. (See what I've done previously in this vein here (http://games.linxsoft.co.uk/index.php/neocron-videos/39-masters-of-the-universe-season-2) - the finals are by far the most polished)

Several people expressed an interest in helping out with the next series. Here's what you could do if you want to help:

Graphics work - a Rock Paper Synapse logo would be great. Some pretty layout for the tables would be nice as well, as would an image (or looping animation) to be used as a background for introduction/outro elements. (1280x720)
Music - I'm happy enough to carry on using whatever I can find from the internet - however if anyone wants to create some original, suitable music and give the rights to use it, that would be amazing.
Commentary - Other people have expressed an interest in doing the commentary work as well, that's great. I have an envisaged format to be used for that, and I'd like to do something where more people commentate.

So, if people would like to commentate, here's what I suggest:

When a match is posted on the main league thread as being resolved, it's open for claiming.
If you want to commentate it, announce your intention to commentate it then immediately begin recording your commentary.
Send the commentary privately to me (probably using some kind of one-click hosting service

What requirements do I have for the commentary:

If video, it should be 30 FPS and recorded at 1280x1024, with the action positioned so that when cropped to 720 high, all the battlefield can be seen, but none of the peripheral GUI stuff.
Clear spoken english. Having an accent is fine, but non-native speakers should be able to follow you. Having lots of static or other elements detracting from audio quality isn't OK however.
Try and keep it shorter than 2 minutes. For two-turn matches, shorter still, eight turn epics can overrun a little.
Record the game sound, but no game music.
Commentary can either be part of the video, or a separate audio file.
If you think the match is exceptional in some way, flag it up - we might want to make it the "featured" match.

The format for the show I'd like to do is this - a new show every 5 completed matches (total show 12-13 minutes long). 4 standard matches, one commentator, <2 minutes long. One featured match, with myself and at least one other discussing the tactics involved. For those who would like to do the joint commentary for the featured match - you need Teamspeak 3 (free download) and to be available sometime between 09:00-00:00 GMT.

Questions? Thoughts? Offers of participation?

This sounds excellent. My current intention for season 6 (barring a last-minute surge) is to have five divisions of six players each, which makes 75 games in total. 75 games = 15 shows = 3 hours of commentary. I've no idea about such things but that sounds like a lot of talking for one person - who'd like to lend a hand?

What do you guys use to record the show?
I wouldn't mind giving some commentary a shot, but I'm not sure how to go about recording in the first place (I tried using Jing, but it has a terrible framerate).

I also might throw my hat in the ring for a bit of commentary - will have a mess about this weekend and see how successfully I can get the tools to behave...

About recording:
I use FRAPS, which I've had a version of for a while. I dug through my sound settings in windows to enable Stereo mix, which is the audio source I record (this way I can get microphone input, through "listen to this source" and the game sound together). There are other tools out there too like gamecam and the like (and did I see someone saying that Evolve doohicky . Alternatively, you could just record the audio using your sound recording tool of choice, and sent that over to me and I can make the video, although I'll need some kind of cue (either timings or an audio cue) for when to play each turn. The video recordings are performed at 1280x1024 - they're then cropped to 1280x720 when I do the editing to just feature the game play and not all the GUI elements.

Oh, and as of the time of this post, I'm up to date with the latest (6th in total) match having been recorded.

I've added a 'Commentators' column to the spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvmG4SoJhEYbdFgtbjN3VFE4OUxQTEtSLWVoVmJGX 3c&hl=en_GB#gid=26) which CMaster will update, so you can all use that to keep track of who's commenting which games.

I'm recording 444083 now (me vs ColOfNature).
Just trying a few things out (and trying not to say "ah/um" constantly)

OK, you should be able to get it here: http://www.screencast.com/t/GW4odg7kxLl
The quality is lower than it should be, I didn't realise the setting was so low when I recorded it. It's not super-bad, but I can re-record if you'd like.

I'm using CamStudio (fraps free has a 30s limit, and I don't really want to pay for it now), however I didn't capture any game audio, sorry.

Nice. When your shotty went down I was (briefly) well chuffed. Then it all started going wrong. But under tournament conditions holing up in a corner is a perfectly reasonable tactic. Good game, mate.

By the way: "Viewing this content requires Windows Media Player." That'll be right. I haven't had WMP on any of my computers for years. Direct link here (http://content.screencast.com/users/RodeoClown/folders/FS%20Commentary/media/653af45b-7df6-43c0-87ea-1db0559edb10/fs-444083.avi).

Oh, for crying out loud. I just clicked that link, and Firefox logged me in automatically and Facebook reactivated my account. Seven months I hadn't logged in for and it's still there.

Hey folks,

are there already plans for season 7? For whatever reason I seemd to have ignored the last 5 ;-) and I don't want to miss the next one.

I've already emailed RPS about it, but there might be more chance of a frontpage show if other people send one in as well.

I've emailed them about it before, but I don't think they heard my cries from atop their colossal 100-mile-high tower made of solid money.

Yes, and the sign-ups will probably open somewhere around 5th Feb.

I'm curious if you guys are recording sound directly from the game or via the microphone during commentary.

I'm trying to setup MSI Afterburner but I can either capture game sound directly with no mic input or via the speakers with the mic on but at a lower sound quality (background noise of mouse and case fans).

Does anyone else have trouble with the WMP Plugin just "Opening Media" forever?

Edit: Got it working now. I find it interesting that in my match against bonuswavepilot, my rocket guy dies. However in my own replay, he's still alive at the end of turn 8. What's up with that? o.0

ColOfNature
21-01-2012, 12:33 PM
The match ends just before the final shotgun blast that takes out the rocket but on a replay that's not obvious, although you can tell from the score at the end (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1WSZoBCwTA&t=51). We had a case in an earlier season where WombatDeath decided that, for the purposes of calculating kill ratios, the result at the end of the timer was what counted, which means this will go down as 3-1 rather than 3-2.

Have done a commentary for my loss to Pirate_PL, but as it turns out my rig isn't really up to it - framerate is ludicrously low (one every few seconds).

The plan, therefore, is to rip the audio off and convert it into an mp3 then send it your way with a list of times for starting turns...

If doing things this way isn't more trouble than it's worth, then I'll put together a few more as we go along, CMaster...

Ugh, that screencast site is a horrible way of doing this. I need easy access to downloadables for the sake of making the complete video. Streaming stuff, especially streaming stuff that doesn't work is not helpful. Have to go digging in the source to find the actual video page.

@bonuswave - that will be fine.

Edit: Unfortunately, two of the matches rodeoclown did commentary for had already been covered in episode 4. The other two have been used in ep5, encoding as we speak.

As I'm already uploading all the matches to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/RockPaperSynapse) if anyone wants me to download the video and either email them or make it available on some hosting service (while such things still exist...) just let me know.

Sorry, I'll dig out the source file next time (I had that account for work-stuff, which is why I was using it).

I didn't know those matches were already in ep4 - I just went off the spreadsheet and picked matches with no commentator attached (rewatching ep4 I see them now, but I hadn't registered they were already done, whoops).

The audience misses out on me saying "Baboonanza" repeatedly.

CMaster - can you please post each of the episodes in this forum as they go up?
Or we can make another forum thread to manage the commentaries etc, so we have a way of knowing each time a new ep is posted?

Cheers.

EDIT - or I can subscribe to the channel on YouTube...
EDIT 2 - or I can read the other thread... :S

CMaster, in case you need to download more from screencast.com, here's a bookmarklet script for downloading the avi directly. I just wrote it so no guarantees, but it worked on the two pages where I tested it at least. Just copy and paste it to the address bar and the avi will start downloading.

javascript:(function(){document.location = /<param name="url" value="(.*?)">/.exec($("#embed").val())[1]}())

Thanks for the effort on this.

I found a new program for recording: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=24601
The free version (that's it) has a limit of 10 minutes per screen capture, but it records mic and game sounds with no issues.

I'll hopefully record another couple of commentaries today or tomorrow.

Unfortunately, quality is pretty awful on these (as is no surprise given the tiny file size). Framerate is in the single figures, units are blurry and voice is full of hiss (I've tried to clean this up, but it's resulted in some pretty bad robot voice). I've still used them, but something needs to be done before the next attempt - I'm pretty happy to do more stuff off just the audio, like I did with bonuswavepilot's bit.
