Wow, what a game!!!

I completely missed it's release the first time around, picked it up in the GOG Christmas sale, best $4 I've spent in a long time!!!

Any suggestions what I should try next?

That's funny, I just started JA2 game myself! Haven't played for ages but I think this is a game I will always come back to.

I'm running 1.13 + ham5 + Urban chaos hybrid, only captured 4 sectors so far.

You really got the whole way through? That's quite a long slog my goodness!!!!!

I don't know what to suggest for you next.

I'd try silent storm: sentinels if any work had been done on it by a community somewhere, but I don't think anything has been happening. The start of the game is fantastic, but it falls apart when they introduce sci fi powered suits for me.

Fallout Tactics, maybe?

Did you play Unfinished Business yet?

I'm yet to finish it. It absorbed a good week or two of my time a few months ago and I recall saying to my wife "wow, this is the best game I've played in years" and that was definately true at that moment in time.

BUT;

At a certain point in the storyline I couldn't be bothered any more. The challenge evaporated almost immediately and with nothing more than a whimper. I had 3 mercs which had gone well and truly into super soldier territory - a sniper with a .50cal/Silenced P90 combo who'd basically solo any mission with ease, dual pistol medic (fivesevens if I recall - purple ammo for that and the P90 is beastly) for flanking and LMG guy for a bit of the ol' spray and pray.

I continued on a bit after that but victory was always inevitable and the most difficult part of any mission was just finding the last guys to kill. The most exciting thing that happened was that I forgot to renew the contract for LMG dude and he buggered off to see his mommy. Rehired him after a week although he took the opportunity to boost his prices!

I went back to it a couple of months ago with the intention of bulldozing my way to Deidranna and just completing it but I'd forgotten how the interface worked and a lot of the niggling annoyances saw me bounce right back off it. I did get some OP rocket launcher thingies though because, hey, it just wasn't easy enough at that point.

I should go back and finish it off before the new version is released I suppose. I'm looking forward to that even if I just end up stopping at the same point - the start of the game is truly excellent.

1.13 had a major version update Dec 28th. The last major update was May.

It sounds like you might need a higher difficulty level :)

Will do, wasn't aware that this was actually in active development so cheers for that.

I've been playing this and active in the community since 99.

I still have yet to finish the game.

Fucking tanks :(

Ivan + LAW = Dead tank. Especially if you get some recon specialist like Shadow to act as spotter and a sniper to take care of infantry.
I had a blast (pun intended) by infiltrating a 3-men strike team at night, in full camo, especially for killing off tanks and coming back the next day with two full squads.

(Game of the freaking century, I swear)

I just finished a week or so myself... I went with Vanilla first, because I wanted to play the game as the original developers (RIP Sir-Tech) intended it.

Eventually, I'll replay it with 1.13.

The tanks were actually pretty easy, truth be told. If you've done everything up to the point of going for Meduna, Bobby Ray's sells LAWs three at a time usually, not to mention the mortars and LAWs you get off defeated enemies. I always had more than I needed. The fact that the tanks don't move either makes them extremely simple, and you can easily tell where they are on the map.

I didn't bother with Unfinished Business... I'm not really a fan of how they changed styles.

I had LAWs, I had awesome mercs, I just didn't have the motivation to fight tanks! Never missed not 'finishing' it to be honest, I always conquered everywhere else, did the Crepitus and Bloodcat Arena etc!

@BenWah
I didn't realize you could merge the mods, any links to explain how & the benefits of it?

@Corpekata
I haven't played Unfinished Business but the community seemed quiet negative about it. I'll look at it again now.

@FuriKuri!
As you get further into the game you come up against more enemies than your three man team could handle and they're running around with AWM's, SCAR H's, LMG's and grenade launchers of their own, not to mention the tanks :)

My final team consisted of twenty mercenaries; two assault squads with USAS 12 and SCAR H's; a scout sniper squad with silenced SMG's, AWM's and Barrett's; and a heavy weapons team with mortars, automatic grenade launchers, anti-tank weapons and machine guns.

Even with that I had to resort to a mustard gas bombardment of the Meduna SAM site to save one of my assault squads from a crossfire.

@Caleb367
What I love about the game is the shear variety of it, it's almost Roguelike in its depth, I've seen so many different methods of clearing sectors or doing side quests that I'll have to go back and try some again!

Highlights for me were using Reaper and Shadow to stealthy clear a SAM site with silenced weapons and machetes, the alarm never even went off :D

I cleared the Kingpins house by blowing the shit out of once side of it with C4 and sending in a four man full-auto USAS12 [AA-12] wielding team from hell in to mop up :D

Attacking a compound an enemy merc comes into view and I try talk him onto our side, he says something to the affect of 'Prepare to die', a single shot from my sniper over the other side of the map exploded his head, 'Bad call brother' :D

I love that it models suppression. I was concerned at first that it might be a bad thing, but it's a pretty decent model. There's a real satisfaction in using plausible covering fire tactics to pin down a group of enemies.

I remember the battle that concvinced me. A handful of mercs were surprised by about two dozen enemies in the woods. In the vanilla game, it'd be a case of taking a few highly aimed shots, and probably losing everyone, as my squad weren't very accurate or well equipped. In 1.13 though, I could have two poor shots spray auto fire everywhere. Not a single shot landed, but it scared the crap out of the enemy squad and forced them all to the floor, where my sharpshooter took 3-round bursts at anyone who broke cover, and my 2-merc spotter team circled round. The sheer volume of fire I was able to unload kept them almost completely pinned while I patched up my wounded and opened up a flank.

They've also done well to keep pistols and other secondary weapons somewhat useful. In so many games (even FPS games like Rainbow Six Vegas) it's faster and easier to reload than it is to equip a pistol, defeating the point, but in JA2 1.13, every now and then that pistol will let you get an extra shot off just as that enemy soldier readies his knife.

Pity the shotguns are so damned slow, though. They have some terrific sound effects.

The USAS 12 with buckshot rounds is great, however you need a merc with the shotgun perk, great marksmanship and lots of strength to get the benefit, there's also a distinct lack of LBE gear for the USAS 12 magazines which doesn't help. My four guys were beasts though.

how good is the game for teaching the game mechanics for a person who never ever played any JA game? with mods or no mods at all.

Dude, don't get me started or I won't be able to shut my trap about JA2. XD
Just this: I have played it a lot - a HUGE lot - and you know my favorite playthrough? The Fail squad. Or, not a single merc from the AIM roster, just the locals and the MERC losers. It was HARD. Really hard. But when I saw Ira becoming my top sharpshooter AND top medic, I felt proud.

The interface isn't great and some tasks become a bit of a chore - switching to/from nightvision modes and combining semi-spent magazines into full ones. I think the mods reduce a bit of the tedium because they let you press some keybindings to, for example, have your mercs switch to nightvision instead of having to do it via the inventory screen. Also be prepared to restart the game a couple of times, once you take the airfield the game becomes a baptism of fire.

But it's not awful - I think I fumbled my way around without using the manual, just be prepared to give it time. The mechanics aren't hugely complicated and your enemies generally boil down to shoot-'em-inna-face for best effect. Great game once you get into the swing.

I remember being confused by the guns when I was playing through with 1.13 - did I somehow miss the way that you're supposed to check weapon stats? Made the game a bad kind of hard when I couldn't figure out how to best equip my mercs when I had the money to do it.

Never finished it, and I don't think I have my save games backed up, so I might have to start again, but I do want to play/finish it this year at some point.

ETA: The NVG key didn't work for me for some reason, and I'm not convinced that the NVGs themselves were working - once I'd go to the trouble of swapping everyone's head gear the game would still tell me that something was wrong. Which again, made the game that bit less fun to play seeing as I'd tried to set up a team that was stealthy, but couldn't really fight at night as well as I should have been able to.

You press shift + N and it does it for the whole squad instantly. That's a good interface!

Just go to Cambria instead. Drassen isn't worth capturing now.

You can disable the counter-attack on Drassen via and .ini command it's one of the few things I modified but I'm glad I did as it's ridiculously hard, I had 50 enemies attempt to retake the mine :/

Also, triggering the biggest gunfight in the game = fuck yeah. What are you even playing for otherwise?

Yes and No, you autoswap to nightvisiongoggles at night,and vice versa.

This is counterproductive in areas like the Basement Level of the Tixa Prison at Night,which is Indoors,here you have to remove all NVGs manually or loose a lot of Sight range due to artificial Light.

Decided to play again on a harder difficulty setting, the counter-attack on Drassen is insane, I managed to train a load of militia but it's a bloodbath. Might have to go back to an earlier save and try work something out!
