I just stumbled upon Afterfall Insanity, an indie game that looks prety AAA to me (Rage-like).

Unfortunately the website doesn't work
http://www.afterfall-universe.com/

The reviews are not very favourable, but some users compare it to a mix of Fallout, Dead Space and Condemned - and that combination sounds VERY compelling to me. Some also mention Metro2033 and Stalker.

So has anyone played it yet?

I played it, you can actually read my (somewhat half-assed) review on gamersgate. Overall I enjoyed it. If you like that kind of setting you'll probably enjoy it too. The game drags a bit in some parts (while still underground) but when you emerge it'll renew your interest in it. Just make sure to play on hard if you want the combat to feel involved in the least (otherwise it's just button-mashing)

This was the game that had a pretty peculiar pre-order/charity thing going on.

Forum post about it: Here (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/forums/showthread.php?1669-Afterfall-Insanity-buy-a-game-for-1-dollar-but-only-if-10-millions-of-you-do).

RPS may have even had an article about it sometime. I seem to recall that... not sure if it was on the game, or on the pre-order/charity thing.

I heard the game is pretty bad. It got low scores on metacritic.

Their website is back online and has some good news. There will be a revamp / version 2.0 available in Q3/2012.
http://afterfall-universe.com/en/blog/news/2012/03/05/afterfall-insanity-extended-edition-list-of-changes

Obviously they want to rework a lot of things concerning storytelling and gameplay.
Let's hope the patch will be accompanied with a sale. :)

And on a tangent: I see a trend there: (Polish?) devs reworking their games substantially based on user feedback after release.
Witcher 1 + 2
Hard Reset
Afterfall: Insanity

Great to see such care.

On sale on Gamersgate right now
http://www.gamersgate.com/DD-AFIS/afterfall-insanity

Bought it yesterday, played it for a few hours. It's dragged down by bad acting (animation + dubbing) and the linear level design, but I'm getting a nice feeling of a crossover between Rage and Condemned: Criminal Origins.

Recommended if you're adventurous and want to see what's brewing in the Eastern European gaming labs. :)

Also there's the promised extended edition later in 2012 free for all owners.

I played the demo yesterday and bought the game today. Starting the demo i was expecting a crappy game (according to most reviews), but it's not a crappy game. I do not know what peoples expect from an indie game like this. The graphics are good and the sound also. Sure the combat is simple and the animations are a bit stiff, but overall it's a solid straight forward experience.

Game devs sure do have a hard on for Russia these days.

Game devs? Russia? What are you talking about?

The devs are Polish, the game takes place in postapocalyptic Poland.

Afterfall: Insanity - thoughts!

Ok, I finished it and it's bad, really bad. I'm not talking about the production values - this is clearly a work of a studio with little money and I'm OK with such games. Actually I love watching how creativity is fostered by limits.

But the authors made many wrong decisions in the story, writing, level design and gameplay department that are unforgivable regardless of the budget.

The level design is absolutely linear, there is no feeling of progress and achievement, the story is incoherent, characters are very shallow and I didn't care one bit for anything that happened. The game gets not more challenging as you progress but more frustrating.

A lot of effort was spent on useless things that have no impact whatsoever. You can collect optional logs/notes that should add more flavour and depth to the world. But they are absolutely generic and don't deepen the backstory in any way. There are many melee weapons with stats, but the weapons handle the same, be it a plank, a pipe, or a fire axe. Moreover the whole melee system becomes useless as soon as you get the first gun.

And so on.

All in all, this game is not worth playing, let alone purchasing.

Afterfail as it is charmingly known it's an indie project something like seven years in the making. It had three different titles and spun across several different genres during the development. In other words, it was doomed for failure pretty much from the start.

Personally I'm surprised it got released at all.
