As implied by the title, I have just finished my first play through and am looking for advice on good mods for VM:B as there are a number out there - any type will do!

The unofficial patch (http://dlh.net/cgi-bin/dlp.cgi?lang=eng&sys=pc&file=VTMBup75.exe&ref=ps) is all you need.

oh yes I grabbed the unofficial patch before the first play, just thought I would see if there is any interesting mods to try on the second run

In my view the most interesting thing to do on a second playthrough is to play as a Malkavian. You get cool powers, which lead to some hilarious solutions to quests, a ton of unique dialogue (with lots of clever foreshadowing) and being crazy is fun! I had a blast on my secoing nd playthrough thanks to this, I'd imagine playing either Gangrel or Tremere might lead to pretty unique experiences as well but I doubt they'd be quite as fun.

Is there a mod that simply removes the whole sewer section near the end? Please please please?

I remember looking for something like that a while ago, but I never could find one. Seems like it could be relatively simple, scripting wise: change the sewer entrance to act like the exit.

There's absolutely no reason to play through that section of the game. It's pure filler.

I unfortunately started playing as a Malkavian back when it came out and don't find the other bloodlines to be as fun =(

Anyhow, off to reinstall it.

Wow playing as a Malkavian was amazing, I steered away from it at first because I thought it'd be weak, I mean ALL the dialogue is essentially different, didn't think the quality could take that hit intact. But bloody hell did they pull it off, fantastic writing.

THAT'S IT, i am reinstalling it. I liked the game a lot but the bugs and incredibly long loading times put me off. Will the unofficial patch solve that?

Playing as Malkavian on my first playthrough at the moment and it is hilarious at times.

“in your dreams you can be normal but in mine I am a dinosaur, RaaAwwW”

I did have a good look around for any mods before I started and all I really found was the clan quest mod. The mod installs several other mods changing character models, sounds and adds quests (with voice acting), but it also makes the game harder which is why I didn't install it.

I recommend the Companion Mod. It allows you to dominate other vampires with an ancient artifact and make them do your evil, filthy bidding (bow chicka bow wow). You can also sire other humans in the game (like the Japanese demon hunter), there’s a bunch of new dialogue made from existing audio files, and an object which opens a portal to Faerūn so you can abduct Minsc’s hamster.

You probably think I made that last one up, BUT CAN YOU REALLY TAKE THAT CHANCE?!

I think so. You can collect women like Pokemon, dress them up and make them pose around your apartment in a variety of compromising positions, you sick bastard.

Yeah I played as a Malkavian first as I thought their powers sounded interesting, it was extremely entertaining but I didn’t appreciate the female models clothing choices – if she wasn’t a vampire I would have could have caught an awful cold wandering round downtown in my revealing cowboy outfit…<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

There is a mod called "Camarilla Edition" that had some nice features. I haven't played it yet 'cause I am trying to finish with my backlog first.

The Malkavian was of course the coolest character ever with the best dialog ever. You could just get some skins and everything is perfect.

I wish there was a bloodlines nexus site.

So i am playing with unofficial patch.
I wanted to ask what a good starting class would be.
The malkavien and nosferatu change the gameplay too much and are recommended for after finishing the game yeah? What about the others? I went with the class(forgot the name) that can't raise strength above 4 but they should have some sort of magic. Is that ok?

Mohorovicic
14-06-2011, 11:27 AM
Tremere? My favourite class to play. Malkavians tend to be... overpowered, and I have serious issue with immersion of playing one.

Alez
14-06-2011, 11:49 AM
I just checked and yeah, it's Tremere. Is that good? I won't be having a hard time?

14-06-2011, 12:11 PM
I am not playing as that clan but I don't think you need strength anyway, I haven't spent anything on it since most missions can be done through either sneaking or talking. just throw points into melee and firearms/perception when you have some spare and you should be fine.

Often touted as the closest any developer has to come to producing a real successor to Deus Ex.

I've only played the first hour or so of the game, I really need to get back to it at some point, and I will as soon as I have more than 1 hour free in my evenings.

If you're worried about Strength, unless you go melee you will probably never increase Strength anyway. So don't worry about it.

Gangrel and brujah are good for the first ever playthrough. can tank damage have nice skills and powers

JG Man. Very good replayability. vampires, conspiracies, vampire politics. great characters, great voice actors, interesting storyline, crazy powers and many fun fun things to do.

you gotta try the game out.

Hmm...I think it's okay. The setting, the characters - the lore - is v. well realized and you really do get a very distinctive flavor from the game. The thing I really didn't like though is the way that a lot of side quests are solved quite simply with dialog options and some of the vampire powers are actually fairly boring to use resulting in fairly stale combat. I think the game would've been much better if they game world was made a little bit larger and more work was put into the side quests i.e. give 'em some hand crafted set pieces.

It is undeniable though that the writing and characters r superb. You ought to give it a go.

Mohorovicic
14-06-2011, 04:34 PM
Bloodlines has one of the best sidequests I've seen in an (a)RPG. They don't hold your hand and majority of them doesn't require you to kill anything.

8-bit
14-06-2011, 05:24 PM
it is kind of strange how the game clearly takes place over several days, if not weeks or months, yet there is no indication that any time passes while you play. it has that hour where the game goes a bit mad and forgets its an rpg, the combat is also bad, cartoonish even, which doesn't fit with the rest of the game. and those are the only negative things I can think to say about it, the writing is top notch, the characters are interesting and side quests are varied, it really nails the whole roleplaying thing too.

Because it has best voice-acting in any videogame ever?

Because it has best voice-acting in any videogame ever?
Three words: John Di Maggio. Want good voice acting, hire good voice actors. Bam! Just go to IMDB and compare their cast to that of, say, a BioWare game. See how many have non-videogame voice experience. Troika brought in a fair few industry veterans of TV voiceovers, and surprise surprise, it paid off.

It's slightly let down by the fact that the actual audio quality of the sound clips is fairly low, but you shouldn't notice in-game.

I played the game with 3 different clans, and while the Malks had the coolest dialog, playing a female Tremere who wears a dress with a flowers pattern and sunglasses while boiling the blood of the enemies AND shooting at them with a desert eagle is my favorite memory of that game.

Alez
15-06-2011, 01:49 AM
Well then i guess i won't be experiencing that for a while since i changed my class to Ventrue . And after that, definitely Malkavian. I dunno if the game has enough replayability for a third one but then i would choose Tremere.
I went with Ventrue because it seemed like the least prone to fighting. The one that can solve things with words. I love the dialogue and choices in the game while i HATE the combat so...

Man, we should get a good old game each month and discuss it on the forum like we are doing now with Vampire (recommending mods and whatnot for new players). There are plenty of guys that missed out on awesome games. I am even playing witcher 1 now.

HAH

Don't get your hopes up, I've been waiting for it to go on sale for about 2 years now. Some weeks ago I just gave up and bought it, well worth the $19.99, even for an old game like this.

I'm now on my 2nd playthrough as a Malkavian, didn't expected to be this hilarious heh

Though the characters and quests are for the most part superb, the mechanics severely drag it down. The RPG aspects of the are very unbalanced such that it's only readily possible to build a hyper-specialised character. If you like that, great. What I found is that trying to build a character balanced between conversation, hacking and combat meant that all three were impossible by the late game. Each individual element seems balanced around the notion that you will have X in a skill for it to be useful, where X is roughly the act number that you've reached.

My strong recommendation is this:

Ignore the RPG elements. Treat it as a quest-based FPS (with third person melee).

At the start of each "act", set each of your stats and skills to the current act. 1 in Santa Monica, 2 in Downtown, etc.

I found that this produced a far more pleasing game experience.

Wizlah
15-06-2011, 10:16 AM
I didn't mind the specialisation, although it does make life harder for the sewers. By the time you get to the end, if I recall right, it's not so much of an issue as even a hyper specialised hacker conversationalist will have stuff to spare in combat or a couple of the more aggressive disciplines.

Doesn't the wesp mod do some rebalancing in places?

And yeah, malkavian is nice to play second time through, which I did recently after not playing it in about 5 years. I remembered just enough of the plot that the foreshadowings were obscure but I got them. and by the end, I was arbitrarily sending people mad and then completely fucking them up. It felt appropriate. Plus, the female malkavian's cowboy outfit is laughably ludicrous and OTT.

8-bit
15-06-2011, 10:35 AM
I don't really agree that some things are impossible by late game if you specialize, my conversation stats might not be on a level as my others but the game still throws me a few options every now and again. you cant become a superman who can do everything and anything like in oblivion/fallout 3, but wouldn't that be the exact opposite of good roleplaying mechanics anyway?

tsk. and you a busy games journo. Shame on you, sir.

Controversial, but when I played it last, I liked the chinatown bits. everything seemed deserted and creepy, like everyone knew there was trouble out on the streets. Also, I'd never done the hitman side quest before.

Has anyone mentioned the Clan Quest Mod?
http://www.moddb.com/mods/vtmb-clan-quest-mod
It has the unofficial patch integrated with it, along with several other popular mods. Its claim to fame is a ton of new content, new missions based on clan choice, even new cut-scenes somehow. It definitely changes the game, but is apparently lore friendly.
