Destination (EU): We will be on Gunnar's Hold (EU) on release
Destination (US): At present we haven't had enough interest in organizing a mass grouping for US, but do feel free to pipe up on the thread if you want to do this. Either way you're all welcome to join the EU based guild. Equally I'm getting some fairly positive reports that lag cross region isn't that bad so feel free to join us
Focus: Casual / Social PvX guild.
Recruitment: We're open to all followers of RPS
If you're looking for a super organized, high activity guild you're in the wrong place. If you want to play at your own pace and just have a good time with a decent community then welcome aboard
For reference the age of members generally skews to 25+. Young folk: we're happy for you to join if you feel you can behave in a respectful and mature manner, but otherwise you may be best served looking elsewhere.
Rules: We are governed by the one principal rule of RPS -
"Be excellent to each other."
This means both fellow guild members and the wider community. Insulting people and general douche-baggery will not be tolerated.
Seen an RPS member behaving poorly in GW2? Feel free to PM me here or add me on Steam to discuss ( http://steamcommunity.com/id/timofee ). Remember though that screenshots/proof will be needed.
Voice comms: Mumble (RPS members / friends of only please)
IP: 85.236.101.45
Port: 13237
Password: the name of RPS's ursine lord (all lower case). Hint it begins with an h

I'm all sorts of pumped for Guild Wars 2 - just look for that guy that forgoes sleep for the entire weekend the first time I can get my hands on the game! Should be pretty sweet to play around with some other RPSers. Count me in!
GW2 is looking sexy as fuck, an RPS guild would just be the icing on the cake.

I'll be there
I'm probably in for Guild Wars 2 - I'm assuming this is on the European branching of servers, if such a thing exists.

Thanks all. When the weekend starts I'll confirm my character name here and you can just whisper me for an invite.
@ Ayam: yes. That being said I'm not 100% sure whether in the beta the servers were hosted in europe or whether they were all US.

I'll be in for the actual game! Planning to dual class this and Diablo 3. Although, I won't play if Ayam is there, because he's smelly.

Re: Servers:
You can swap around and play on any server you like, EU or US. The only restriction imparted by your "home server" is that is the side you must play on in the WvW mode.
EDIT: But the most important question remains!
"Rock Paper S________"?
Rock Paper Sylvari
Also I got the gw2 art book yesterday and it's sexy.

A few skill-inspired suggestions, for old times' sake:
Rock, Paper, ...
...Shadowform,
...Shatterstone,
...Spiteful Spirit,
...Skull Crack,
...Searing Flames,
...Savage Shot.
Most likely I will run some of my future characters with my old GW1 guild, but since you will supposedly be able to have different characters in different guilds, I'll definitely will join in.

Rock, Paper, ...
...Shadowform
I quite like "Rock Paper Shadowstep" actually. Although any argument you could cite against a race-specific name, you could certainly put against a profession-specific one. (EDIT: Not intended as a knock against RPSylvari, which I'm happy with personally.)
Rock Paper Signet?
wahwah
13-04-2012, 04:58 PM
I'd be up for that
Rock Paper Shiverpeaks
Rock Paper Salvage Kit
Rock Paper Skillpoint
Rock Paper Snow Leopard
Rock Paper Skritt
hmm =\
(edit: Not intended as a knock against rpsylvari, which i'm happy with personally.)

Rock Paper Shiverpeaks
Rock Paper Salvage KitI also thought about the first one, maybe the guild hall would have to be located in Norn territory then. ;) The second one sounds good as well, if maybe a bit... special.
What about just Rock Paper Shotgun? There are guns in the game if you're desperate for a link to tie the guild name between RPS and GW2.

A couple more suggestions:
Rock Paper Charrzooka (no S though)
Rock Paper Salvage (drop kit from the earlier suggestion, although maybe sounds a bit farmy)
So far Shiverpeaks is the best suggestion of the GW2 themed names imo, although agreed that it could just be called Rock Paper Shotgun (for a change :D).

I think it sounds like you're trying too much if you call it Rock Paper SomethingFunnyHaha, but what's in a name, Rock Paper aSura it is.
Onto another question, if any are getting the prepurchase, which are you going for? The pure vanilla flavor looks good enough to me, the bonuses for an extra £15 don't seem worth it to me at all (warning, hasty cut and paste job incoming):
Summon Mistfire Wolf Elite Skill*
Miniature Rytlock*
Golem Banker*
Chalice of Glory*
Tome of Influence*
My reasoning was as follows:
- Pretty much everything in the deluxe edition is a one time use only, apart from the Summon Mistfire Wolf skill, so basically your paying £15 for that.
- There are several summoning elite skills for both races and proffessions, so it's not as if that skill is gonna give you something distinctly unique gameplay wise.
- £15 would probably get you plenty of nice stuff on the gem store, so if you really wanted some cosmetic treats you would get more value and more choice just spending that extra money on the store instead of the deluxe edition.
- The GW2 artbook is £17 so I got that and pre-ordered the normal edition. I figured I'd get more enjoyment out of the art than a single elite skill.

Yeah I'm kind of in the same boat as Duff really. Originally I was looking at the Digital Deluxe as an in-game bonus like an exclusive skill is exactly the kind of thing to tempt me, but the price isn't worth it.
Cheers to Duff for reminding me I could just spend that extra money in the cash shop anyway.

Cheers to Duff for reminding me I could just spend that extra money in the cash shop anyway.I am in the same boat, I had planned to go with the Digital Deluxe Edition, mostly for the exclusive mini Charr following you around and maybe a bit for the skill as well. But since I'll already have some Miniatures from the get-go through the HoM achievements I think I'll pass on that. Maybe the Charr can be bought lateron with gold / gems (thanks for the idea Duff!).
We aren't exactly certain what will be on the gem store yet, so I wouldn't count on being able to get some elite skill like the Wolves, but I bet they are the kinda thing you will use a few times and then switch to a profession elite skill anyway. I mean humans get the Hounds of Balthazar (sp?) elite skill which looks like exactly the same thing, just fiery hounds instead of misty wolves! Still I reckon you could get something more valuable to you with that money on the ingame store.

As I understand it they will be previewing the cash shop in the next beta?
Right now I have my GW hall of monuments up to 21, so hopefully a nice set of items, minipets and title to kick things off in GW2.
In the last beta the cash shop was under NDA, even for the press who were allowed to talk about pretty much everything else. If it was in the last beta I expect it to be in the next one.

I'm so in on the guild idea.
Regarding pre-purchase: I was on the fence for the DD edition and my friend bought it, but I have a feeling that he's regretting it now; it's extra money that he could have used on the cash shop upon release.

For you pre-purchasers out there I'll defo. look to set something up on Vabbi (the server) at the end of the month when the first beta weekend happens. Obviously it won't persist between beta weekends and the main release but would be good to get questing with some RPS chums. Since they'll also be dropping the NDA we'll be able to chat about our thoughts without fear of scary Arenanet reprisals too!
Plus if we scrape together enough we could give WvW a bash

Plus if we scrape together enough we could give WvW a bashIf WvW is anywhere near as dependent on harmonical coordination as GvG in GW1, I expect that format to be dominated by larger guilds and alliances composed of members with enough time for near 24/7 play. Which of course is no reason to stay out of these fights. ;)

Much as I'd like to join RPSers in GW2, I likely won't join any RPG guild. It's partly because I'm already spoken for, but it's mostly because y'all are a laid back bunch of guys with likely scattered play styles and schedules, and I'm not.
MOKKA
14-04-2012, 09:29 PM
I'm also interested in joining a RPS-Guild, at least during the Beta. .
As for the name; maybe it's better to just use the acronym 'RPS' and go with something different for the complete name?
This way, we could use something a long the line of "Rurik's Pampering Squad"*.
For those who haven't played the first Guild Wars: Rurik was the name of a rather important NPC who you have to protect during several missions of the first Guild Wars and who had the habit of blindingly running into each and every enemy on the map.
By the way, it might be a good Idea to found a RPS-Guild in the first Guild Wars, as I think you're able to 'reserve' the name for GW2 that way.
*I'm not sure if this name is in proper english though...

Personally, I am past my time of excessive online RPG gaming and looking forward to some casual sessions of exploration and messing around.
However, since you can sign up individual characters to different guilds, one can still join in for a round or two without giving up more "serious" plans. In addition, ANet announced that there will be several dungeons that can be played with small groups of ~5 people.
re: the name I confess I was planning to go with Rock, Paper, Shotgun but if people would rather it be something else do shout out. Hell if someone has the facility to set up a mini poll we could totally be democratic n stuff.
My vote is for Rock Paper Shiverpeaks of the names suggested so far.
Regarding the beta, I'm kind of torn on what to do. I really really want to play, but over the course of the beta weekends your likely to do each starting area a few times (characters don't persist through the weekends), and I don't wanna burn myself out on the early content before the game arrives.

Then potentially I have good news on two fronts:
1) You can be in more than one guild with the same character - which is quite frankly excellent and I cant believe other MMOs haven't done it (as far as I know)
2) Myself and a friend play faaar too much, so we'll be around a lot
The multiple guild thing seems great as you'll be able to have a small guild to link up with longtime friends but you could set RPS as your primary guild and through sheer weight of numbers we will should end up getting a lot more Guild xp than we would otherwise manage in smaller guilds, hence we get better bonuses.
Not sure how many their planning to have per server but in theory with a hundred or so people we could become one of the major guilds on our server
Edit: PS I agree with MOKKA actually, if we could just have RPS that seems the most sensible, although if it ends up auto correcting the format to Rps then probably not

It looks like the guild name formatting is the same as it was in GW1, in which case you pick both a full name and an acronym for the guild. RPS would obviously be the latter, the former I would be happy with Shiverpeaks personally.
As for beta burnout, I plan on avoiding it by limiting myself in the number of characters I play (most likely just the one) and I won't be playing a norn or a guardian, since that's going to be my main at launch and I don't want to spoil the profession or norn personal story for myself.

The idea of a guild from here sounds good, it will be important to have a decent leader tho and some kind of ranking structure which doesn't alienate lesser skilled/not as hardcore players.
It should be a very good game is guildwars 1 is anything to go by, playing in a guild is what this game is all about. I loved the PVP aspect of the original game and played it to death.
Rock Paper Stormbringer
personally I'd stick with just calling it rock paper shotgun, whats the point in changing the s? Can't wait now!

15-04-2012, 12:55 AM
A guild of friendly, laid back forumers sounds ace to me.
The guild name is of lesser importance, but if we are to change the S, it surely has to follow the weapon/weapon/weapon convention. As mighty as the Shiverpeaks are, using them in a hand-based-argument-deciding-luck/skill-face-off would be somewhat unwieldy (plus, they are rock-based...) Of the skill or weapon names released so far, Scepter, Shockwave and Skull-Crack seem the least lame that begin with S.
Screwie
15-04-2012, 09:45 AM
Indeed. The game's lack of subscription tells you right away you don't need to be a super-focussed committed group to enjoy it. A relaxed friendly bunch is what appeals to me in a guild in any game.
And yeah, I like the idea of the continuation of the weapon theme. Or at least skill types.
Scepter
Shortbow
Shout ("Rock Paper Shouting" sounds ace, actually)
greatSword/Greatsword (keeping the short name as "RPS" of course)
gunShot/Gunshot (ditto)
I really don't mind how the name ends up, I will trust and go along with whatever. My only real preference is that I would rather take a punny guild name over of the name of our mothership website verbatim.
Besides, talking about the name is a welcome distraction from the fact that I still can't play this game yet! :(

I think when it comes to choosing a server may be worth looking at where PC Gamer's guild ends up, usually there is an overlap with RPS.
Personally unless there's a truly excellent pun, would be better to just go with Rock Paper Shotgun. Lots of time to keep thinking of one though and playing the game in Beta will throw up more ideas :p

I'm certainly up for joining an RPS guild.
Not sure how likely it is I'll get into the next beta weekend as my pre-purchase is from play and they have stock problems. But they are still £10 cheaper so I'm loathe to change to an expensive one to get in for the weekend (cheapest in stock I can see is shopto at £48.85).

a RPS guild sounds great and definately up for joining in beta and on release :D
I would suggest making it on the emptiest server possible. It was mentioned in the press that the starting areas of the last beta were pretty busy and the public quests turned into a bit of a hectic free for all.

@duff. I take your point and broadly agree, that being said I've made the mistake in WoW before of ending up on a server with too few people, and despite the queues SWTOR was badly underpopulated all over although that seemed more by design.
Plainly when a game is available for a restricted timeframe the opening areas are going to be incredibly crowded. For the sake of the beta weekends I still suggest we congregate on 'Vabbi' (predominantly because its a server name I can give you now). While progress will not be saved between beta weekends its a fair bet people will gradually congregate to the same server as previous weekends and then nearer the release we can judge whether we want to go with a different server.
Re: peoples suggestions for the guild name, for the sake of the weekends I'll go with Rock, Paper, Shotgun but nearer the release we can have a phased vote i.e. phase one Shotgun / something else? phase2 and beyond, what the something else is (if that wins)
Now I just wish they'd clarify when it starts on Friday so I can figure out if its worth booking the day off work.

(In my opinion being 'good' at an mmo at least until raid/hardmore content basically requires being relatively affable and being able to spell to a level that doesn't incur brain-melting aneurysms on those upon whom you inflict said affability, I'm sure everyone on RPS can manage that!).

Well sir I suggest you prepare to have your opinions challenged then!
W+1 isnt going to be enough in my experience so far. Some of the elite/veteran etc mobs that wander the world are decidedly tough and those that are used to playing dps in group play are suddenly going to find out how easy they had it when mobs come tearing after them. Its also not afraid to throw a lot (and I really mean A LOT) of monsters your way even when solo'ing.
That being said there's definitely an upper limit on the scaling so if you find yourself in a mass zerg you're gonna wanna go somewhere else unless you like steamrollering everything.
PS there is no end game/raid content planned, at least in the conventional sense. The explorable mode dungeons are doubling for end game as best I can gather and if you watch some of Total Biscuit's coverage they are supposedly very challenging

Yeah, i saw TB's 'Explorable' vid, that's kind of what i meant by hardmode. I haven't played GW2 (other than 45 mins at the EG Expo, where I didn't encounter anything remotely challenging, but was also in the noob area) so obviously I have no idea how difficult it is. But honestly being killed in the first 10-15 levels in an mmo by anything other than accidentally trying to solo a mob clearly meant for a group would be a pleasant surprise.

I shall certainly be partaking of some WvW, we must form a merry band and go raid some of the smaller keeps, rather than tediously sitting outside the main one breaking doors down without siege weapons.
Also a tip for anyone that hasn't played it yet, and I cannot stress this enough, 'supply' is critical to success

I saw yesterday that GW2 are almost at half a million 'likes' on Facebook. They will be releasing a piece of art at every 10,000 'likes' before they reach that figure, then release a final piece which we'll apparently really, really like when the 500,000 is hit.
Here's hoping for some fancy WordArt showing the release date.

Personally, I back their "it'll be finished when it's finished" refusal to cite a date. From what my friend who's NDA'd says about the previous betas, the stuff out is pretty polished - if imbalanced - so I suspect they know what they're doing, and I for one want a perfect game rather than a great-but-flawed game two months earlier.

Agreed, if anything I'm slightly concerned its going to take them longer than the late summer that seems to be the general consensus of when it'll be released.
I'll be miffed if it comes out in late September / October when I'm in Canada for 3 weeks.

Well, we have to actually dodge and be more situationally aware than 'don't stand in fire' for this game. No tank to do all the hard work for you, and that's why it's looking potentially brilliant.
Personally I'm more of a pvp player and from what I've seen I will be well catered for aswell. My biggest problem with traditional MMO's pvp was that some classes (especially healers) were just impossible to kill for others (usually classes with few interrupts and low burst damage), you can stand raining down hell for 30 minutes on that resto druid but he ain't going nowhere (try having fun in arena games that last over an hour, but you can tell in the first few minutes that, barring a massive fuck up, your teams healer will be OOM first). With tanks and healers gone things are much more fluid. From a pvp perspective this game looks like the MMO I've been waiting for.

Pfft. You give raiders too much credit. Spelling remains unrepentantly horrible and most of them couldn't keep from standing in fire even if the leader was screaming at them over Vent to do so. I'm of the (assertively grim) opinion that the only skill involved in raiding in specific and MMOs in general is in not reaching my hand into the internet to sucker punch every mouthbreathing Darwin award winner personally.
So the fact that this game dispenses with the holy trinity and actually has dodging and directional attacks is, to me, a step in the right direction. Soon we'll get to walking and chewing gum!

If the game could come out in october it would be better for me :) I should have finish the renovation of our appartment, leaving me with at least a bit of time to play.
My problem with MMO nowadays is that it's hard for me to commit a long period of time to it without pause. Damn kids.

Although I won't be around for the beta, I'll most likely end up buying this close to launch, simply because I love the community feeling of other MMO's i've played, but couldn't stomach the subscription costs. Never played Guild Wars before, but this sound like it'll be right up my alley, and having a group as laid back as this forum seems to be would be fantastic. So, basically, tentatively count me in for when the game properly launches.
That being said, i'm in Canada, so i'm not sure if that'll affect whether or not I can do this. I read something about being able to switch locations in servers, but I don't really know how that works/applies to this.

Considering I have no MMO friends (and in the game...et cetera, et cetera) a RPS group sounds amazing. I hope there will be enough North/South Americans joining in so the guild isn't empty during prime PDT hours. Friday at noon will be sweet!

Anyone can jump on different servers for PVE content. The problem with the EU/Us split is if people want to do WvW as that's limited to your base server.
I for one am very interested in the WvW so we are likely to need some co-ordination when picking servers.
Bork Titflopsen
23-04-2012, 10:47 AM
On the topic of creating a guildname, since you'll be able to pick a name and add a tag to it as well as being able to join multiple guilds maybe it's an idea to create multiple guilds under the same [RPS] tag focusing on different aspects of the game.
For example:
PVP focused group
PVE focused group
General chat/overarching guild
Just speculating though, I can see the guild getting diluted too much this way if we can't gather the numbers in order for this to work.
Screwie
23-04-2012, 10:57 AM
At the same time everyone could just join every guild and we display whichever one is appropriate at the time :) Diluting the pool means that the resources and rewards we earn in-game are also getting spread thinner, though.
I don't think there is a clean solution for the home server split when it comes to WvW, which is a pity. The neatest I can think of is a single guild for each of the EU/NA server clusters with a lot of membership crossover between them (for PvE)... but there might be a better way of doing it.
Right now (iirc) we don't know if WvW will take place across all servers or only in their own clusters, anyway.

I'm sure we'll have something figured out once the game launches, but it's always good to be organized and ready for action. :D

Personally i'm more interested in PvE stuff, so the WvW split doesn't hugely concern me. I suppose that we could, like Screwie said, just have branches of the guild in each region that fight together during WvW, with one main "hub" guild used for PvE? I'm not really clear on the mechanics at work in the game, so i'm not quite sure.
Also, ConcreteOtter, i'm on PST, so I'll hopefully be able to join you, though i'm not sure if it'll be on Friday's at noon.

Yeah we'll have to see in this beta how a guild will work across regions - I'm optimistic on the PVE side for mega PVE guild containing both US and EU players to be viable. Anet said they have guild event calendars for differing timezones and some of the biggest pve guilds in GW1 were multinational, so it would be a surprise to me if this is not possible.
WvW will likely need subset guilds given the region locking. That's ok as long as we get the flag design right for when we claim towers :p
I guess for officers and stuff, how did they do it in the RPS EVE and Perpetuum guilds?

Agreed re: NA and EU WvW Guild - plus I wouldn't wish 200ms PvP on anyone. I gather servers will rotate but almost certainly not cross continent. For PVE however we dont wanna dilute the guild by having sub ones at least until we get a handle on numbers.
Btw, how're we going to fight over officer positions, guild crests etc. Democratically or bare knuckled? :]

It's Ctrl+T in GW2, evidently. I was trying to find /say but looks like it's been replaced by /l or /local... fair enough.
ArenaNet have put up a blog post about "guesting" (http://www.arena.net/blog/choosing-and-transferring-worlds-in-guild-wars-2), which is the term they've coined for visiting servers other than your own.
It's a good read that clarifies a whole bunch:
It looks like the server name list won't be changing for launch.
No matter where you are, you can choose either the NA or EU cluster as your home.
Full-on home server transfers cost 1800 gems and can only be performed once a week.
In this beta weekend we'll all be given 2000 gems for free!
Most importantly, guesting is NOT available in this first weekend.
That last point means we need to plan ahead!

Good decision imo. If it's not busy enough can always try something else in the next BWE, or even use the free gems to transfer in this one. I'm sure on release all of these servers will be filled right up though, that's usually the mmo pattern.
Most important thing is to stay clear of the zerg guilds and unofficial language servers, to avoid ques and linguistic obstacles.

Well, potentially (might be a bit much hassle for a BWE) we could have separate RPS and PCG guilds , where we earn our rewards for respective guilds. Then have a third guild with members of both, for ease in finding groups and sharing a chat channel. Might take a bit of extra administration, but it would fulfill the alliance function.

Yeah you can be in as many guilds as you want but you can only "represent" one at a time. When you represent one you see their roster, show their guild tag and influence you earn is to that guild. What I meant was you can't have an actual alliance like you can on GW1.

What's everyone planning to play? I'm probably going to go for a Charr elementalist. I traditionally prefer short/range or melee classes, but the element swapping mechanic sounds interesting and I'd quite like to keep Warriors and Rogues fresh for when the game finally releases.

Me too, I am massively hyped!
I was all set to play either a necro or ranger (so I could be a good tester and give pet AI feedback) or failing that, engineer or thief - all four of those professions are the ones I'm least likely to play post-launch.
On top of that I wanted to avoid playing norn as my eventual main will be so norn, and I didn't want to spoil any of the personal story for myself.
But then I woke up this morning thinking norn elementalist... sigh. I suppose I could just not do any personal story this weekend...

If you grab a dagger for elementalist you'll still get to play short range. Probably means you'll have to get pretty good and dodging but that isn't a bad thing.
I'm going to be going Theif and probably Ranger. Thief for helping out loads when being seiged in WvW (stealth out to go grab supply if our routes have been cut off) and Ranger to see what the pets are like.

Yup, I think the only downside is that if (on release) you choose a European server as your home server your account will be flagged as European and as such you'd go through Euro customer support. Which isn't really a bad thing at all as if your on a EU server you'll likely be playing during EU times.

I became fairly skilled at skirmishing in RvR as a Ranger last time around, but I'll probably be Guardian-ing it up this time. Anyone out there with Guardian tips/preferences?
For anyone interested in Ranger, I'd recommend going with the Greatsword and the Longbow. I had never expected to, but I ended up spending the grand majority of my time tearing peoples' faces off in melee combat, rather than shooting them with my bow. Brilliantly good fun.

Somewhat. The warhorn was brilliant for buffing an entire party, and the single-handed sword was fairly decent too. It allowed you to leap away and back towards your opponent at will with the "2" ability (depending on cooldown, of course), as well as having the slithering poison ability on "3" and finally getting the ranged hawk attack with the warhorn, which was also quite useful. Definitely one of the stronger set-ups, but it just didn't have the massive damage of the greatsword.

I'm thinking an organised group of ranged attackers with either a elementalist laying down walls, a ranger with a torch or a warrior loaded with banners and the "On My Mark" skill can really tear an enemy apart. Will probably live in WvW as soon as I've got all of my favoured weapon set unlocked.

From this excellent primer (http://www.guildwarsinsider.com/beta-weekend-event-primer/):
Guilds can be created the second you are out of the opening cinematic. Hit “G” to create a guild or to represent/stand down from a guild.
As for inviting people to a guild, I don't know if you have to be standing near each other or if it can be done remotely. I believe I read somewhere that the invitee has to be online at the time, at least. It may just be a case of Timofee sorting the guild out then sending whispers all over :P
