Picking up from interview with Chris Avellone someone should seriously set up a kickstarter for Firefly. I know there was the whole debacle a while back ( http://screenrant.com/nathan-fillion-firefly-reboot-joss-whedon-mcrid-105215/ ) but honestly I reckon there's some mileage in this, particularly since Whedon has just about finished Avengers.
IMDB reckons Serenity had a budget of $40m so with an incredibly rough adjustment for inflation lets say a cool $50m funding goal. If nothing else I'd be intrigued to see how close people could get to the target.
Based on the previous attempt it sounds like they wouldn't sell the rights but with that much money pledged they'd surely considering recommissioning it themselves.
I'd set it up myself but sadly you need to be a US resident. So any RPS forumites fancy it!? I'll happily pledge £1000 to get the ball rolling. Hell, as one of the rewards I'll personally fly out and meet anyone that pledges $10m and give them a hug/shake their hand - whichever they'd prefer ;P

The problem with that is that it really isnt in our hands to get Firefly on the telly again thats fox's and whedon and whoever else so i would really have trouble taking peoples money when fox or even wheadon could say no and all that money would be wasted and youd get vwry angry customers. I think Serenity is what all were going to get because that didnt earn enough and wheadon wants to go onto oter more profitable things.

Cherish what you had and move on.
$50m means 3-4 million investors in what is essentially a blue sky project by someone with no experience in the field and no current access to the properties required, your main hurdle would be advertising the project and convincing everyone you weren't wasting their time and money, on that basis, I don't think it will work.
After Serenity I think Whedon has given up on it. At this point the best you can hope for is a reboot in, I dunno, 10-15 years?

Fair enough, you're probably right.
On a more general point I'm interested to see if the kickstarter model could be applied successfully to fund TV shows. Though due to the high costs I guess it would only ever work with big established TV industry types.

The show didn't have enough viewers, even if it got got revived it would get canceled again.

The show was broadcasted in the wrong order, changed timeslots over and over again and was put in the "don't put new shows here" timeslot to boot.

The success of reruns, the DVD release and Serenity would probably negate that assumption.

I think Firefly is best left RIP, it was a good show and movie and it could so easily be ruined by a dodgy return.
Speaking of which, is that Buffy remake still going ahead?

There was a crowdfunded TV show some time ago... Pioneer One was the title. I dunno whether they're still making it, after the first 2 or 3 eps I dropped it.
Looks like I'm one of those poor sods who never even heard of the show until it's too late.... What was it about anyway?

A western in space, however unlike Gene Roddenbury's take on it, this one was more driven about the society rather than the technology that will be in the future. It, too, has an ensemble cast, but the plots are more because of them as opposed to including them.
I'll have to agree with the 'Let it die' crowd on this one. It's had its spot in the sun, but it's time to let it rest.

Don't let that stop you from checking it out. As a bonus you get to see the episodes in the intended order. Great characters and an interesting universe.
Is there a DVD release of it out there? I might as well check it out
Of course, both the TV series and the film should be on amazon.

In future, there is this fantastic thing on the Internet, called Google*. It really is quite remarkable... you can (almost) ask it questions and it will provide you with answers.
http://www.google.com
You should bookmark that.
*If you don't like the sound of that, there are several alternatives. Google them if you want.

FTR I've been using DuckDuckGo for the last 6 weeks. Silly name and not as fast, but for most practical purposes it doesn't make me miss google.
