The Jane Jensen Kickstarter

I'd expected Jane Jensen's kickstarter to go through the roof, but it seems to be steady on a relatively modest target.

After all, the adventure game genre seems to be going through a renaissance thanks to Adventure Game Studio. I for one fancy a bit more Gabriel Knight, Gray Matter, and improbably named characters. Don't you?

Bugger all this real life and realism in gaming. You cannot make a cat fur moustache in real life (God knows I've tried).

Hmm. I remember reading about Gray Matter a while back. Is it any good? Where do I get it?

I enjoyed Grey Matter a lot. The narrative structure isn't as solid as, say, GK1 and 2, but it's a very compelling game to play. It kept me hooked from start to finish. Added to that, it had some really nice music, and it's a really good purchase if you can get it at $20 or less.

I bought it for $10 or so on Gamersgate during a sale some months ago. I don't know if it'll ever reach that price again, but you can wait it out. I still think it's worth the non-sale price though. ATM I'm trying to scrimp enough to pick up the Collector's Ed (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B003ZHIDL8/sr=8-3/qid=1325099644/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1325099644&sr=8-3&seller=), but the flood of so many good Kickstarter projects is really not helping my wallet.

Jez me, but a story-based adventure game like Jane Jensen is known for is something I've zero interest in.

IMO:

I don't think the elements that make for a good page-turner translate well to being stumped and frustrated. Two kinds of impatience mixing there.

If it's an adventure game, the story works best if it's either in no way in the foreground, or else completely cliched/absurd, because really all it wants is an excuse to get you into the puzzles/make jokes about itself.

If there must be an emphasis on story, then the puzzles need to be a) really simple, and/or b) genuinely relevant to the plot of that story.


What little I've played/heard of GK makes me think it's not got that figured out, so to be honest I don't think it'll make for a good game and I don't care for it.

The GK games are great. I think this Kickstarter suffered from the whole 'year of adventure' thing instead of just being a straight-up game.
